- Buses (including some on services which replace closed railways), National Express Coaches, some trains and other transport-related scenes in suburban north London in the early 1990's.
Much footage comes comes from the Golders Green area, including Golders Green Road and Finchley Road, plus the A406 North Circular Road, Muswell Hill, the remains of Cranley Gardens station which is on the Northern Heights route that was meant to have become part of the Northern Line the railway line which instead of becoming part of the Northern Line but was closed instead, and more.
Because of the quantity of footage filmed to the North of London there are four (4) North London films, including one that is dedicated to showing the special 'RedExpress' peak-hour express buses on route X43 which used the first north London restricted parking Red Route.
I love these videos, they capture a lot more than just buses, they capture little tiny moments in people's lives, who are oblivious to being recorded.....
I mean, what are the chances of someone seeing this on RUclips and actually seeing themselves or their loved ones..
+John McMahon well its possible, but very unlikely!
I still have some more footage to come - bus snapshots in Central London. Hopefully this will be done in early 2016
Sometimes I feel guilt for nostalgia but this proves how much things have changed, mostly for the worse. The main differences for me are that back then there were mostly cars, buses, and some vans. Alot less people and things were quite clean. It also felt like a lived in place with people who had roots in the area. The shops were individual back then and Lindy's a patisserie in GGreen was a decedent legendNow there are a lot more vans of every type, more people who seem to seem to be passing through, lots of aimlessness and rubbish everywhere. And the chain non descript shops with surly service... the end of charm. The only improvement is buses and transport infrastructure. With apps telling you when the next bus is and the digi displays. It is sad that when things were otherwise nice the transport was really difficult, the rickety Northern Line trains a prime example with its endless delays waiting up to 15 mins. Now the trains are frequent but everywhere is full of unsavoury types.
It's the lack of HGV doing oval deliveries that made the streets seem quiet back then. "Just-in-time" ordering system has a lot to answer for?

Good upload.. I came here, not just for the Buses but for the Cars aswell and just the 90's in general......
I love films like this from different decades, just for the nostalgia.
Me too
proper cars 😍
The European and Japanese ones, yes. The British cars were awful
@@_B.M_ Range Rovers and Vauxhalls and Fords weren't awful at all
5:43 there used to be a good quality bakery near that bus stop in the early '90s. They did amazing bagels and possibly the best jam doughnuts I've ever tasted. Long disappeared of what I recall. I literally lived a stone throw's away heading north towards the bottom of the hill from this point.
Closer to the North Circular Road junction there was a Deli Diner which was closed down for a period of time because of hygiene issues, rats, mice, infested with insects etc sometime in the mid to late '90s. I remember watching a documentary about it on TV and reading it in the local paper. In the early to mid '90s I occasionally used to buy food from there when I was a little bit desperate, and to be perfectly honest by what I'd witnessed with my own eyes, I was taking a risk. But I was young and reckless. So wasn't that surprised when I read about it/was featured on TV. I've had worse tasting food though!
I'm glad to hear that you survived! When a schoolboy one of my friends was ill for a few days - which he blamed on some food that he had bought from a Chinese takeaway. He thought that it had been partially pre-cooked and then the oil was not hot enough in the second cooking to kill any bugs.
I can't believe I have forgotten how irksome the 260 was back in the day with its single set of doors, even by London standards. So great to see how they looked once again back in early 90s along with Golders Green, to when I was a kid.
It's so weird seeing buses I take now from before I was even born lol. The 144 was my school bus in Edmonton
My old neighbourhood I remember those days
nice red 205 gti and the buses too jaja
The Wiz! 😍
National Express Neoplan Skyliners, splendid. The part from 7:30 must be a little earlier, as there's red RMs on route 13, before it was operated by BTS
I used to go to some of those restaurants
This was when cars looked so much better
I was probably on that 260, I remember them so well, I forgot that the 240 was a single decker.
Like many desperately trying to see the shops/background
9:50 Bonus footage of a Class 91 InterCity liveried service speeding past Hornsey/New Southgate to King's Cross
My god looks like a different world
Gosh as a 9 year old kid back then I would have loved to have ridden upstairs front seats of that 'Rapide' coach, my bus was and still is the dreary 210 bus passing through here to Hornsey Rise🙁, I need a driving license
I never noticed how the bus engine sounded so different back then.
Before 1994 because the yellow Zastava at 10:08 was untaxed as of December 1993.
Lovely Porsche 928 at 3:35... Better than a darn Prius
And a lovely mk1 golf gti at 6:25 😍
nice Rolls 1:27 and 8:20
Waiting for a bus is preferable to a Prius
Sad seeing what the city is today.
Damn! I think I recognise pretty much every place in this vid. The first 3rd is around Golders Green and then Temple Fortune. I lived briefly/around a year near the North Circular Road / A1 / Finchley Road / Henleys Corner junction circa 1994. It was so noisy, I could hardly sleep. I hardly go down that way anymore. It's even more congested now of course.
(Btw that 260 bus route was atrocious! From start to end, so was the 82 and the 102).
I also lived between East Finchley and Muswell Hill when i was a young kid. Still pass by there on occasion. Prefer these areas compared to Golders Green/Temple Fortune/Hendon etc
Love watching these videos. Looking at the fashion, the type of cars driven back then etc Pure gold. A still living snapshot in history. When was this actually taken? Which year?
The section of the North Circular Road at Henleys Corner OR the part between Colney Hatch Lane/Friern Barnet - Bounds Green hasn't changed very much as far as congestion's concerned, unfortunately. I can't remember traffic being that bad though in the early '90s between Friern Barnet and Bounds Green (Pinkham Way). I thought it was more of a milllenium phenomenon.
Just before the very last part, the unmistakable Crouch End with its clock tower.
Anyway, thanks for posting! Better than watching these crappy "back to the '90s" vids on TV about celebrities. This and other vids like it are about the punters' streets, our areas we lived and grew up in :)
P.S. Omg, the very last part of the vid with that old section of the North Circular Road. Now that really takes me back! Do I see the Manor Cottage pub and roundabout before my eyes per chance?
Hello, Thanks for your kind comments.
The North Circular is as busy as ever, happily though I rarely need to travel that way nowadays. Apart from the tunnels which replace the old road layout that included a single lane section, another new feature since this was filmed is the introduction of average speed cameras. These extend from somewhere like East Finchley round to the A40. I've read about them but not yet used the road since they were introduced.
The Bounds Green area has also been changed, although I do not recall actually filming this back in the 1990s.
This film is also a real slice of life, as it was in the mid 1990's. Sorry but I cannot quite an exact year but an approximate would be 1992-1993.
I do not watch the TV programs. I think if I did I'd end up glued to the box and not even starting anything that I wanted to do.
Does anyone remember 'The Wiz' in golders green?? Video games shop?
sorry, not me, as I rarely went to Golders Green
The good old days, no fast food delivery mopeds and none of these electric scooters. Bliss
also no snail slow 20 mph speed restrictions
Not so bothered about most of these buses (though find slightly older ones interesting) however looking at the cars is fascinating.
Bah!.... morei em Londres entre 1990 e 1994. Muito andei de ônibus por lá, em especial o 133 e 157, que me levavam para casa em Tooting.
at 3:20 , a beautiful red Peugeot 205 GTI casually goes past
Y a 1.9l with those wheels too!
No SUV's to be seen!! ....how refreshing. When did people feel the need to drive around in an oversized box on wheels.....with a high seat position???
07:20 Who's the person on the bike?
At the beginning of the video had me like 😮. The bus 28 going from Golders Green all the way to Wandsworth. That was a journey and a half. No way would it be able to do that journey on today's standards it would collapse.
Buses are much better now than then. Plenty of great, long bus routes in London still.
4:41 I see a Civic Shuttle and I believe a Metro
Is that the Central Line or Northern Line running above that road? I can tell it's a 1956/1959/1962 stock. And whilst filming, I don't suppose you were lucky enough to see any amazing 80s Sports Cars? Like Ferraris etc.
The trains which cross the North Circular Road near-ish to the Brent Cross shopping centre are on the Northern Line, Edgware branch.
There is a really bizarre vintage sports car in my Crich Tramway Village film. Its only a minute or so from the start of the film. Apart from that its possible but I last saw these road films some years ago and I'm sorry but I donlt remember the cars etc which appear in them.
Ah, thats a Morgan 3 Wheeler, such wonderful cars. My best memory of one of them was seeing one tip over, thanks for the Northern Line info, I was wondering which line it was.
This is very early 90's, I'd say no later than 92..
Any ideas exactly what year this is?
+John McMahon hmm, exact years were not recorded but I was filming in the early 1990s and especially in footage from this area I recall it being when the Metropolitan Police Traffic Wardens were still patrolling our streets (by which I mean before this task was deregulated and given to local governments to manage).
Why are the busses at the start so small?
DekkasTrains There are many reasons why some bus routes use smaller buses.
These include that some bus routes are less busy so do not need large high capacity buses; on such routes passengers prefer smaller buses which are more frequent than larger buses which are less frequent; some routes serve residential areas where large buses will have difficulty negotiating the road configurations, especially when turning left / right.
Also, brand new bus routes will use smaller buses at first and then if passenger numbers increase enough the small buses will be replaced by larger buses.
ah ok, thanks!
1991-92
When London was still mostly white, British, and local. R.I.P.
I remember having 1 of them mark 1 fiestas 3.30,complete shite
chaos. and still no improvement today. even worse
Only 1 cyclist in sight must have been heaven for drivers then not being cut up by them
even better for cyclists - there was not the same animosity / ill-will which exists today
