Left the buses in '92 to do more coach work Just as the company got taken over for the second time in as many years. Rarely had an Atlantean where the brakes didn't screech. SNBs were an absolute pleasure to drive. At that time semi autos (doubles) were slowly being replaced by fully auto. London Country became Luton and District (uniform change) and then Arriva. Happy days and some amazing, hilarious memories, stories.
I drove these buses in the eighties from Tottenham bus garage 73 to Hammersmith 76 to Victoria 171 to Forest Hill 243 to Holborn 41 to the Archway great to see all these places again
Wonderful to see Titans invading Metrobus territory. Until the late 80's the T's were allocated on the east side of the Lea Valley, M's on the West with only a handful of routes taking those allocations over the border. I lived deep in Titanland in Barking and rarely saw the exotic, very different-sounding Metrobuses.
you should see it now! or perhaps, better not. Packed solid with people using the whole world's languages - and feeling like strangers in your own place of birth. Sad.

........The Conservatives were "in power" in Enfield at the time so could have been Major Government who started the horrible ball rolling with "Privatising" our whole Transport System.
@@elizabethsheffield6609 Bus deregulation started in the UK under the Thatcher government in 1986 although I don't think it applied to London until a few years later. At the time many towns and cities had their own "corporation" bus services run by their respective local council and were therefore accountable to the local electorate. Once deregulation occured this was no longer possible. Many councils set up arms length companies to comply with the law, but over the years big groups of private companies bought out these concerns and the ethos of running a transport service as a public service using profitable routes to subsidise the less profitable ones and also using the revenue from the busy times to subsidise early and late lightly used services was replaced by one of mainly greed and profit for shareholders at the expense of the travelling public. There are only a handful of towns and cities left now that still have a vestige of their old "corporation" bus services still running.
The new routemasters initially had conductors walking around with mobile card readers but deFeffel didnt factor in the extra wages correctly so they didnt last long. The heritage routes that still run old routemasters have conductors with card readers. I haven't been on one in years but they may have card readers dotted around on the bus too.
Ugh, I remember this period so well. London so famous for it's red buses, was seeing buses from the provinces pushing the red buses out. The first part of this video had me wodering if it was actually London. What a shambles with private operator colours and liveries. The buses seem to be a rag-bag assortment of vehicles bought together in a last minute rush. Different models on same route, some with London spec two sets of doors, others from who knows where with front doors only. Great confusion for passengers wanting to get off the bus in busy rush hour. Absolutely dreadful. If that wasn't enough, Routemasters were being sent off for scrap to make way for these substandard vehicles. Best front loading bus for me was the London Metrobuses. Loved seeing them again.
