GOD bless you all, PETRA.some of my favorite songs ever, way back to college days in the Early 80's.Npw I am turning 60 in July of 2023.GOD BLESS PETRA!!!!
Time to Rise up! No time for Lukewarm Christians! The lost will be swept into the undertow! Take up your cross and Daily walk with the lord! We don't have another 10 years to get right!
very nostalgic.great memories of being 21 years old and in college at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and belonging to a great Pentecostal Church group!!! Now I am turning 60 this coming Summer and I'm still all about "beating the System" as a follower of Jesus Christ with a heart for Ministry
A few years ago it was a work day at the church spring cleaning stuff. The youth pastors kids were looking for christian music to play. I told them about Petra. They started playing this song. All the pastors came running. Petra helped me survive high school.
As a Bible Camp Director back in the 80s, I played a few Petra songs with lyrics posted but for some reason I was NOT asked back the following year. It took another year for them to "allow" me back again. Funny now, but not then.
A good old video from 1984. Greg X Volz was (and still is) a very powerful singer. I remember being surprised by his vocal ability and overall stage presence. I had never seen this line up live, but I had a vhs concert and several cassettes (that I still have) and did enjoy playing them. My Aunt Bonita and Uncle Wayne gave me a cassette tape of Petra's "More Power To Ya". I'm sure to help counter balance the education I was currently receiving from Motley Crue and OzzY Osbourne. I have to admit some of it did take seed, even if I was unaware of its planings at the time. I came to really enjoy the band's music and messages. Their songs some how lead me to research reference and lyrics. "What is a Judas Kiss?" and who is "The Graverobber"? My always inquisitive mind needed to know the reason behind, and the source of, the lyrics therein. Now I have to point out, this did not stop me from listening to Motley or Ozzy. But it did instill some alternate viewpoints and information that I would later understand more deeply. I was happy to have recently stumbled across some reunion videos on youtube. Was fun to watch the band play those songs again after all these years. And pleased that I still knew every word and melody. This was one of their videos, that I think was aired on MTv a time or two. Face the heat and dare to beat the system.
DRIvIN RAIN Petra is my favorite band!! And although I listen to 80s regular rock, the Christian stuff is still my favorite and I have much more of it than the regulars. I'd never take their lyrics to heart though. Only the Christian bands do I do that with 😏
Thirty three years ago an excerpt from this video was used in an advertisement produced by the Christian Television Association. I was twelve. I was starting to listen to rock and pop music. From the advertisement I learned that there was a genre of music called Christian rock. Two years later I heard the full Beat The System album, and I loved it.
the concert footage was filmed in San Antonio... about a billion years ago.. i was front row that night.. wearing my Petra shirt.. i had no idea that i'd for ever be in a Petra video.
The Beat The System tour was the first rock concert of any kind that I ever attended. I was 15. Beat The System album was the second rock music album that I ever owned, following Petra’s Not Of This World album. My mom bought it for me on cassette, as a surprise 🙂
Petra was the very first band I listened to when I became a fully committed Christian in 1985, saw them live several times. The message of Beat The System was so important to me, since I'd just come out of a long period where it felt like the system had beaten me. Looking back, the music is still awesome, but I'm so glad they ditched the parachute pants and Ziggy Stardust shirts!
"In the world you will have Trib, but be of good cheer, "I have overcome the world."" In the last book of the Word of God, Rev. There is promises to those who overcome. They overcame by the Blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony, having not loved their lives to the death. Rom. 6:11-13
Greg X Volz, came to my Christian school, in the 7th or 8th grade. It was awesome. I used to listen to this song as loud as my Walkman volume would allow, with bass boost of course. Lol. I have this CD still today
Its hard to believe this was 25+ years ago now. It still seems like just yesterday. Not Of This World and Beat The System were the first 2 albums that I owned (on tape) and the Beat The System tour was the first rock concert that I went to.
I made copies of it for the same reason! This was the last Petra cassette I bought as my teen years ended. Petra was a big part of my teens and still have their music today.
ABSOLUTELY, RUBEN PAGE, Petra was the greatest band in Christian Rock.I'm less than4 months from turning 60 YeaRS OLD& they are still my favorite Band, on par with the Newsboys, also my favorite Christian Band!!! I survived college in large part thanks to Petra& a great Pentecostal Youth Group I was an active member of!!!!
On my computer I have Petra cd albums from 1974 to 2005 and Petra The Ultimate Collection :) And I have few cd ablums with Greg X Volz one of the former vocalist in Petra :) And yeah I do spend some of my free time listening to Petra, but other music too I like to listen to :)
The title song of what in my opinion is Petra's best album. The album featured songs that actively called out issues within the Christian community. Whilst I am not a Christian, it takes courage to call out popular trends, especially if they are destruction or based on false premises. Not long after Volz left, the music took on more of a corporate feel. Whilst the songs still featured good instrumentation, there was something flatter about the tracks. BTW, Volz had a few solo albums after this that were absolutely brilliant. Well worth the listen if you get the chance.
Now THIS is classic Christian rock. The video was kinda unusual (but then again, a lot of videos were like thatback in the day), but the song is freaking awesome!
Greg X. Volz: IMHO, their best lead singer. LOVED it when Classic Petra put out an album in 2010 (I attended the concert taping in Nashville too!). Sure hope they put out another album; getting nervous now, it's been 4 years....
Another Classic Petra album is not going to happen. The two albums we got (one studio, one live) were pretty much one-offs brought into existence almost entirely through the efforts of Greg Volz, and he wasn't able to sustain the momentum to keep the project going. Classic Petra is officially dead.
There is some debate about whether or not Volz was actually offered a position with REO Speedwagon. You ask members of the band and they're like "Greg who? Sorry, name doesn't ring a bell." I think he might have been asked to audition, perhaps through an agent or other third-party, but I don't get the impression that he was ever formally offered the lead singer job, and certainly not by the band itself.
We brought them here too. Other than that like I said earlier is that the "system" is very complex .I can go on and on. But it's purpose It's too keep people like you and me dumb down and not see, or recognize, or accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Our way out. Jesus doesn't oppress, seduce, or confuse. He is humble, He gives and He reveals. Those who are and accepted Him the devil will do many things to keep them from drawing close by giving the pleasures of the world. We Christians-
Love, love, love this song and this group!! Each singer was so awesone for Petra!! Especially john Sclitt! He rules the universe!! Through his music and through his messages of god!! So does this one!! Always loved the group Petra!! I listen to their music a lot, religiously I do!!!

My first time ever seeing Petra was on this tour! It still holds a great place in my heart. My first ever purchase was Petra's "Not of this World". My favorite band of all time!
I remember when I used to wear this cassette OUT! hehe... great music, great message... I remember when we heard this song on the houston rock radio KLOL back in '86 it was such big news in our church we had a party at the house =) I was 11
I will comment here and state that I became a new fan of Petra a couple of months ago after listening to the Beyond Belief song for the first time. I went on a binge and listened to all of their studio albums back-to-back in chronological order and finished the same day that I'm posting this. My analysis is this--the "Beat the System" album is peak Greg X. Volz while "Beyond Belief" is peak John Schlitt, and I think it's unfair to say one singer is better than the other because each one brings a unique style, flavor, and passion to the group. That being said, I think if I had to choose my favorite album of all, it would probably be "Beat the System", primarily because it caters to my instrumental and vocal preferences. I am a fan of synthesizers and other sounds the 80's are known for. That, and the fact that the album just sounds unique compared to all the others in general. It seems less "normal" than their other albums, though that isn't the word I'm looking for. It seems like they were genuinely having fun with these songs and were worshiping the Lord while doing it. For me, it's hard to imagine what was going on in Greg's life why he wanted to pursue a solo career at that time when Petra was becoming massive. It all worked out in the end, though, and I'm so glad I came across this group. To God be the glory.
I know this song was from 1984 (maybe the Orwell novel inspired the idea for the song). But now it is 2013 and the song is more relevant now than it was back then. Keep our eyes in the Word, stay in prayer and be aware of what the world, the flesh and the devil are trying to do to turn our little heads around the wrong way!
In the late 80's I went to a Petra concert in Davenport Iowa with my wife, and at the end while the arean was emptying, I decided to make a trip to the "facilities" and wait for the crowd to clear. In the darkened hallway leading back into the arena, a voice called out to me, "You're a little out of your territory, aren't you?". I was puzzled, didn't know what the person were talking about.
The last album of the Greg X. Volz techno-rock era. Now they are called Classic Petra. I attended the same church as Mark Kelly when he left to get an MBA.
This dude has a Hip-hop channel but was surprised to see a Petra compilation Live video on his channel. It seems to feature Greg X. Volz and old petra live songs from 1985 and 2012: Search for: "Petra - Great Moments Live - Greg X. Volz era "
Petra was singing songs ahead of their time and many still don't fully grasp how this pertained to the Bible and the age of time that is drawing near. As is written in Revelation which Petra is exposing that is drawing nigh. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six." Revelation 13:18 states that if one is wise and has an understanding to count the number of the beast, which is also the number of a man, the number comes to 666. Count means to compute or Calculate.
In fact, both Greg X Volz and John Schlitt are from hometowns very close to where I live (John--Mt Pulaski IL, and Greg--Peoria IL) I also later found out that John attended the University of Illinois, which may account for his spotting my shirt so quickly. Anyway, John and I had about a 5-10 mintue conversation by ourselves in the hallway, and I walked away thinking, "what a great, humble guy."
The live stuff was filmed by (for) MTV at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium. Our seats were right above the spotlight to the left of the screen. If you look really really hard you still cant see us raising our hands and shouting No! They had us do that over and over several times for a 2 second clip.
The beginnings of Bob trying to hide his baldness at any cost. Although the beret was cheesy, it was certainly better than the toupees he went on to wear.
This is a great song. Love the video, but you can tell. It's definitely 80s by looking at how they were dressed. That said, great 80s Christian rock band.
When my eyes finally adjusted to the low light, I realized that the person I was talking to was John Schlitt. He asked where I was from and I said, "A town you've probably never heard of--Decatur, Illinois." I was floored when he said "I'm from Mt Pulaski." It is a tiny town just about twenty minutes down the highway. I'd grown up listening to him sing in the band Head East and never had a clue they were from around my home town.
He he he, I love Petra like my own mother, but this song is soo trippy, sometimes it scares me. Interpretive dance. It was amazing in the 80's hahaha. That is to say, long live Petra.
@LambadLambadLambda Sorry to hear of your path in life, i've had trouble in my christian walk as well, but didn't completely give up, lot's of prayers for you in the future, God Bless!! Steven
@tenor529 I'm not christian anymore either, but I grew up listening to this stuff, and their music is still really good. I'd feel silly listening to it though because of what it promotes.
GOD bless you all, PETRA.some of my favorite songs ever, way back to college days in the Early 80's.Npw I am turning 60 in July of 2023.GOD BLESS PETRA!!!!
This is very nostalgic for some of us. Beat The System was the first Christian rock song I ever heard. I loved it right away.
So did I
Yeah.

Petra is one of the best Christian rock bands ever! I love this song and was happy when my sis sent me this video. Thanks for posting this!

Me too, And I believe that the song was way ahead of its time
You Beat the world's system..by living a prosperous heavenly system and life..down here on Earth.. nothing can stop you..
I wish that there were some new bands that had this style of singing.
Petra was the greatest christian rock band ever, and they were professionally given this name as well at the dove awards. They were the best!
Petra was the very first band I listened to when I became a fully committed Christian in 1985, saw them live several times. The message of Beat The System was so important to me, since I'd just come out of a long period where it felt like the system had beaten me.

This is a classic from the best gospel/rock singer to date!!!!!!!!

Greg X. Volz... nossa! Que voz! Ele cantando "Adonai" é de arrepiar! Glória a Deus!
Beat the System and Rick Cua’s Can’t Stand too Tall we’re the first two cassettes I grew up with. They don’t make CCM like this anymore
The live crowd shots near the end of this video were filmed in San Antonio on March 21, 1985. It was my 17th birthday and I was in the second row.
Greg X Volz, came to my Christian school, in the 7th or 8th grade. It was awesome. I used to listen to this song as loud as my Walkman volume would allow, with bass boost of course. Lol. I have this CD still today
I lovehow the drummer is so into that beat!!! I love it!!!

Best band in the 80:)many good memories!
I love Petra!! God Bless them! They are for God and were and is still one of the best christian rock bands ever!
My favorite ♥️

I made copies of it for the same reason! This was the last Petra cassette I bought as my teen years ended. Petra was a big part of my teens and still have their music today.
@Wyocaveman
I am glad you found a good christian path, this group was a strong influence for me, in the 80's as well!
God Bless! Steven
Very underappreciated band.
My first-ever concert was the 1985 Beat the System tour, it was amazing. Michael W. Smith opened, hahaha. What an unforgettable experience that was.
Wow what a combo back when Smitty made great music that just wasn’t praise music. Still listen to the Big Picture and I2Eye to this day
@@deadmansgulf911 Totally agree, those are both still great albums! Very different styles as well, I always liked his instrumental tracks too.
Simplesmente, a banda mais marcante, inesquecível e bíblica de todos os tempos!!!
Com toda certeza, a melhor e inesquecível! Minha banda de rock cristão preferida.
Wow...I haven't seen this in over 20 years! Thank you for posting!
The Live Shot is from the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - MTV was there - it was the 1st Christian Rock Video filmed for MTV 😎
So much relevance to today 2018.. Beat the beast system
Very good words & music in this song (& others of Petra's, like "Graverobber" & "In The Likeness of You"). A real blessing!
I love the song and the message
one of my favorite petra songs!
I love the message of the song. but remember god is still throne and he is coming again
Soo accurate in our generation, we are the last Generation 🙏👑✝️❤️🔥🌍🎉
wow, i used to watch this video when i was a kid over and over again
Maravilhoso, lembrei da minha adolescência, eu era considerado rebelde por ouvir Petra 😂😂😂♥️♥️
When these guys would come to milwaukee wisconsin I was there. Our church youth group made it a point to see them. Loved them.
Petra. Arguably the best Christian Band of all time. And they are in my opinion.
My double cassette player used to chew these tapes up, lol, I listened to them all of the time, great stuff
Ahhhh good times. Petra in the 80s!!!! The 80s rocked and this Christain Rock band was a favourite along with U2 at the time.
Yes they are back!!!!!!! Classic Petra!!!!! Awesome.
PRAISE GOD!!!!
amazing. whats so striking is that thier live production was just as good.
The title song of what in my opinion is Petra's best album. The album featured songs that actively called out issues within the Christian community. Darren Z It seems you have some _actual intel_ on the matter. If so, sad day. Thanks for sharing, though :(

So 80s, but still awesome.
Loved hearing Petra LIVE at Easterfest 2011!!! They can show some younger bands a thing or two about rocking out!!!!

Petra was singing songs ahead of their time and many still don't fully grasp how this pertained to the Bible and the age of time that is drawing near. As is written in Revelation which Petra is exposing that is drawing nigh.

Agreed. Style-wise, this is video has the same feel as most of the videos of the same year.
In fact, both Greg X Volz and John Schlitt are from hometowns very close to where I live (John--Mt Pulaski IL, and Greg--Peoria IL)

The live stuff was filmed by (for) MTV at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium. Our seats were right above the spotlight to the left of the screen. If you look really really hard you still cant see us raising our hands and shouting No! They had us do that over and over several times for a 2 second clip.
Gracias por subir el video..ojala tuvieran tiempo y subieran subtitulada..gracias
The beginnings of Bob trying to hide his baldness at any cost. Although the beret was cheesy, it was certainly better than the toupees he went on to wear.
Loved this then, still do.
Petra and KISS are the best ever!
A great song to listen to today
Praise God!!!!!!!!
He he he, I love Petra like my own mother, but this song is soo trippy, sometimes it scares me. Interpretive dance. It was amazing in the 80's hahaha. That is to say, long live Petra.

I'm not christian anymore either, but I grew up listening to this stuff, and their music is still really good. I'd feel silly listening to it though because of what it promotes.
