The crazy thing to me is how his voice barely aged at all even into the 2000s. He still sounded almost exactly like himself in the '60s
Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Don Messick. In the years leading up to his death in 1997, he found he could no longer effectively do any of his famous dog voices, like Scooby-Doo for example, as he claimed when he stopped smoking, it took away his ability to enunciate "dog talk."
I'd read that as well...but in reality he was still voicing Scooby prior to his September 1996 stroke. His last vocal performance as Scooby happened in 1996 in a brief commercial for Burger King. Scott Innes took over the role of Shaggy starting with that commercial. The commercial is on RUclips and Don sounds the same as usual. Scott took over as Scooby in 1998 and was the official voice until Frank Welker took over the role in 2002. Don had his first stroke in September 1996 inside Hanna-Barbera's studio while recording voices. He officially retired the following month as he could no longer perform the characters. Mark Evanier attended the retirement party in October 1996 and on his webpage remarked that Don was in great spirits but in weak voice due to the stroke. Don had a second stroke more than a year later in October 1997 and passed away soon after. I know that there's reference on-line to a charity function he appeared at in London and it's reported that he did a lot of his characters at this event except for Scooby. However, I came across that information on Wikipedia and there's no source cited for verification. I question the legitimacy because of Don voicing Scooby for a video game in 1995 and the Burger King commercial in 1996.
@@ACcountryFan The reason Scott Innes did Shaggy's voice in that Burger King commercial is because Casey Kasem was a vegetarian. That's why Casey Kasem also didn't do Shaggy's voice in the early direct-to-video Scooby Doo movies like Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, which shows Shaggy (and Scooby) eating crawdads, and Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase, which shows Shaggy (and Scooby) eating hamburgers and hot dogs. Whereas in Aloha Scooby Doo!, which was made after Casey Kasem was back on board as Shaggy, Shaggy (and Scooby) eat fruit, ice cream and cake. Now that Casey Kasem is dead, Shaggy is back to eating meat, like in Frankencreepy, in which Shaggy and Scooby enter (and win) a bratwurst-eating contest.
Of all the old voice acting talents to be involved in projects, John lasted the longest and had quite a resume. It's remarkable how long he stayed active.
I know. Just think; starting off with The Flintstones in 1960, and managing to stay alive and well into the 21st century to voice characters in the latter era. Quite a remarkably healthy specimen, wasn't he?
June foray lasted longer
My favorite is Thundercracker from the Transformers. I'm a huge transformers fan :)
Loved him as Defcon! Interesting how in the same episode he plays Bosch.
He sounds like a combination of Hans Conried with Frank Welker
With a little bit of John Dehner, too.
And Joe Flynn.
@@TwoWeekCowboy a splash of Billy Bletcher in there too.
And a bit like Corey Burton too.
@@Rlotpir1972 That's why John Stephenson did the voice of Mr. Peevely (sp?) in Help! It's the Hair Bunch. Hanna-Barbera originally wanted Joe Flynn to voice the character but ended up not using him.
Strangely despite being one of the most famous actors in animation golden age and still voiced another character even to this day John Stephenson never gave any interviews and was rarely seen in public, although he did make an appearance at BotCon 2001.
Yes that is right, he was a guest there along with Gregg Berger, Garry Chalk, Scott McNeil, and Michael Bell.
@@stainshield that would be Alongside his Transformers co-Star
John Stephenson was underrated. The monster voices sounded like the most fun?
Man, overlooked as a voice actor.
Hanna Barbera picked one of the greatest voice actors and actresses. Brilliant
Yes they did
The portrayal of John Arable in Charlottes Web was probably accurately based on his physical appearance.
John Stephenson was SO underrated
He was in Darkwing Duck no way
😰😨😱😭😭😭
Had no idea he voiced that many characters! The man was Mr. Hanna Barbera.
Everyone other cast member of the flintstones where heavy smokers except him he outlived all of them
By a long shot too, he made it to this decade. The others were gone before this millennium (especially Alan Reed)
@@lotusbandicoot Bea Benaderet died nearly 10 years before Alan Reed, in 1968.
He also voiced the Dread Baron, the Great Fondue and Mildew Wolf in Laff A Lympics.
Mildew Wolf was originally voiced by Paul Lynde in 1969 in the "Its The Wolf" shorts on the Cattanooga Cats Cartoon
Weird..he did so many different roles and had such a talent, but he doesn't seen to be much of a household name
Many of his roles sound like an old gruff politician(in fact, he even played one of the presidents of the USA)
Charlotte's Web as Fern's Father and Mr. Slate in the Flinstones! And the Sargent of Top Cat!
Mr Arables physical appearance was obviously based on Mr John Stephensons appearance.
He's on just about every episode of the original "Flintstones" - Alan Reed, Jean Van Der Pyle, Mel Blanc, Bea Benaderet & John Stephenson, from Kenosha, WI.
I was surprised when he played Dr Strange, Shocker Loki in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends!
He was the 1st voice of I.G before Don Adams.
Chief Quimby to be accurate. I.G. was voiced by Gary Owens.
I loved the voice of Fred's boss, Mr.Slate!!
Wow. What a resume!
As you can hear here, he had a great voice, adaptable to so many things. He really projected so many personalities through that voice. I remember hearing it on tons of cartoons as a kid. John did on-screen acting, too. He guested on shows like Rawhide and Perry Mason. It's fun to watch the voice of "Mr. Slate" sitting on a horse....or testify in court. The other night he was on Mason and Perry was grilling him and I half-expected him to shout "Metamorpho!" and get huge like on Speed Buggy! RIP, Mr. Stephenson.
John also had a recurring role in a sitcom called "People's Choice" that Jackie Cooper starred in. John played the role of Roger Crutcher. John also did a lot of television commercials in the '50s...particularly those that aired during "I Love Lucy".
Yeah and 2015 wow. That was almost as long as the woman that played on Looney Tunes, she died a few years ago. She was about 100. I forgot her name though.
@@cockerspanielfan56 June Foray
I always knew this guy as the voice of Doggie Daddy. And man, was this guy a great voice actor
Doug Young was the the original voice of Doggie Daddy. I don't know why he didn't do Doggie Daddy's voice in later years because he lived to be nearly 100.
Thundercracker and Mr. Slate but also enjoyed him as Dr. Strange, Magneto, Dr. Quest and the various monsters on Scooby Doo.
You forgot about Windcharger!
Yes, JS did the voice of Dr. Quest but only on five episodes; the role of Dr. Quest was recast with Don Messick when Joe Barbera thought Stephenson's portrayal of Dr. Quest sounded too similar to Mike Road doing Race Bannon.
What a tour de force voice to be reckoned with. I worked for Della femina advertisers in A/V
and had the honor of having him use his voice in our “Account-temps” radio ad. Thanks for
taking time to post.
I didn’t know he was Hairy Scary in Casper, the Black Knight Ghost, the Creeper, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Caveman in Scooby-Doo, Shocker on “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends,” or that he was in “The Real Ghostbusters,” “What’s New, Scooby-Doo?,” and “Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland.”
In Jeepers,it's the Creeper,it was Casey Kasem, not John Stephenson,in the Birdman epidsode with Cumulous,it was Henry Corden & the other hooded villain was Doug Young.
He was the original voice of Dr.Benton Quest, replaced after only six episodes because the producers felt he sounded as cool as Mike Road, who voiced Roger'Race' Bannon,Don Messick was more dramatic in his delivery & would voice Dr Quest until 1994's Jonny Quest vs The Cyber Insects.
I meant Don Messick.
And it was on the first four episodes where John Stephenson did Dr. Quest's voice. He did continue to voice other minor roles on the remainder of the series after Don Messick took over for Dr. Quest.
There were a lot of characters voiced by John Stephenson that were favorites. He voiced a number of villains in the "Dynomutt" cartoons: The Red Vulture, The Blimp, The Glob, Otto von Flick...he also provided the voice of Chief Wiggins. John was also the voice of Mr. Peevely on "Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch". In the Scooby Doo series, "Laff-a-Lympics", John voiced Mildew Wolf (his impression of Paul Lynde) and he provided the voices for Dread Baron and The Great Fondoo. He had a remarkable career as a voice artist.
They left out his Laff A Lympics characters 😐
Spider-Man and his amazing friends.
Bumblebee (Dan Gilvezan)
as Spider-Man.
Thundercracker (John Stephenson) as doctor strange.
Nice to see you again after a month long break.
From a tough as nails head, to an adorable and the nicest good guy/creatures you’ll ever meet, even a cunning criminal mastermind. This man done it all.
And just my observations: in cartoons, he could’ve played a great sportscaster/play by play, maybe baseball, would’ve loved to hear him call a huge out of the park home run with a crowd. Or, had more holiday specials came, JMO, and IDK if he’s done it, he could’ve been a great santa.
Mr John Arable looks just like John Stephenson himself :
He did some iconic voices
In honour of Tim Conway’s memory, please be sure to do a showcase of the many characters he voiced sometime in the near future.
Working on it as we speak - it'll be out next week.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind Could you do the many voices of Jason Griffith.
This guy looks a lot like John Goodman.
Nope he doesn't look nothing like him
2:39 "BACK OFF!"
You forgot Fariik, and Bakaar from Arabian Knights and Eustace Peevly from Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch.
Eustace P. Peevly was one of his best in my opinion!
Great voice actor and great cartoons
If I remember correctly, His final time voicing Mr Slate was on The Flintstones On the Rocks.
I'm pretty sure it was the Johnny Bravo episode A Page Right Out Of History, On The Rocks came out in 2001 while the Johnny Bravo episode came out in 2004.
The claymation Fruity Pebbles commercials.
@@MaestroDrake I'm not counting commercials.
@@SegaNintendoGuy64 That's ok. I do.
Thundercracker, Windcharger, Huffer, Kup, and Alpha Trion from Transformers and Granok from Inhumanoids. Also Beef Bonk from Galaxy High.
He’s voicing characters in Scooby Doo and Transformers too.
The clip that's shown for Fancy-Fancy when it said "Top Cat (1961)" is from the 1988 movie Top Cat and the Beverly Hills Cats and John Stephenson also voiced Officer Dibble in that movie.
I love Fancy-Fancy
Might I suggest:
Debi Derryberry
Hal Smith
Janice Kawaye
Jodi Benson
Mark Hamill
Jess Harnell
Bill Faggerbakke
Great list! I started working on one for Jess not too long ago. I think I'll work on one for Hal soon too.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind you know, that's what I was going to ask you to do. Can you do Lennie Weinrib and Howard Morris?

Ken Sansom
Stan Freberg
Verna Felton
Julie Bennet
Joan Gardener
Tony Jay
Katie Leigh
Walker Edmiston
Allen Swift
Bill Thompson
Whos Julie Bennett?
A popular actress from back in the day. She did Gay Purree, the Looney Tunes, etc. Look her up on RUclips
@@fozzieatdetourbillnye5514Julie Bennett is best-known for doing the voice of Yogi Bear's girlfriend Cindy Bear.
The Fancy-Fancy clip isn't from the '61 series. Also worthy of note in my book are Chief Winchley and Mr. Peevly.
2:27 Is that you, Shovel Knight?
Where’s Doc from the animated Fraggle Rock?
RIP John Stepenson
(1923-2015).
It really hurt when he passed away. :(
Please Do James Earl Jones Next
If only you knew the power of the dark side.
I hope we see the list with shows that star Pat Fraley.
You're back!!!!
So Sad To See John Stephenson Passed Away In 2015 He Done Good Job Voice Mr Slate From The Flintstones Fern Father From Charlotte Web And Crepper From Scooby Doo Where Are You
I’m so glad you’re back I missed you
Thanks Sarah!!

FLINTSTONES!!
Please do the many voices of Rodger L Jackson.
Finally, back to these videos. Though when are you going to do Jeff Bennett and the other voice actors featured on the Simpsons.
Hopefully very soon.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind Thank you.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind Could you do the many voices of Jason Griffith. (The voice of Sonic The Hedgehog and Cilan from pokemon.)
Classic
Don’t forget Scatman Crothers.
Hong Kong Phooey, Scat Cat, and I think he sang the theme song for The Heathcliff and Marmaduke Show. (Though I know him best as Louie the garbageman on Chico and the Man.)
2:54 Peter MacNicol actually channeled this voice rather well in Harvey Birdman
2:37 is the voice of Henry Corden. Not saying John Stepheson didn't do the character in other eps. Sorry I'm a nerd when it comes to voice actors
Thanks for coming back. I missed you. BTW I think he was born in 1928 not 1923
Thanks! It's been a busy busy month, haha.
Hmm... all sources online point to 1923. So I don't know.
@@SaturdayMorningRewind Thank you.

I've never heard of Galaxy High School before, but based on that short clip, the concept looks amazing. This is the kind of thing that should definitely get a reboot.
And thank you for introducing me to Stephenson too! He seemed like a great guy.
You're welcome!
And I used to love Galaxy High School. Definitely an underrated cartoon you should check out. The DVD's are available on Amazon.

Finally a video after you didn’t post for a month for now on do a tribute to Tim Conway who died this year
Yeah, it was a busy month. Didn't have much time for editing.
Yep, already planned on doing one for Tim. Should be out soon.
well one of the Scooby voices was from the Tim Conway episode
John Stephenson Will Always Be Barney The Dinosaur To Me.
Fantastic voice talent! I first saw him on Gomer Pyle USMC.

@@SaturdayMorningRewind Oh good!
He also voiced an animated character on Sesame Street who talks about loving his bones. Here is the segment: ruclips.net/video/hHFvvpOyHnM/видео.html&ab_channel=TinyDancer
Welcome Back S.M.R .
I’m still waiting for the first anime voice actor to appear in your channel
How about you do Digimon star Joshua Seth
Can you make in memorian 2010?
He also provided the voice of the (live-action) minister at Fred and Wilma's wedding in _The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas._
Can you do a voiceover tribute of Peter Hawkins?
(Dr Who/ Wallace And Gromit)
One of the more unusual things he did voicework for was the Saturday Superstar Movie "Tabitha and Adam and the Clown Family". In this bizarre"movie" (which is actually less than an hour long) the children from Bewitched are the cousins of a bubblegum rock band. John Stephenson voiced at least two characters: the father of the Clown Family and the lion tamer. (Lots of other familiar voices in it, including Paul Winchell, who voiced at least three characters, Janet Waldo, and Frank Welker, who voiced one of the members of the Clown Family, using his "Fred Jones" voice.)
Mr. Slate: FLINTSTONE??????
The Black Knight is my favorite Scooby-Doo Villain from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! 1969 TV Series I like. 🖤❤️😈
Didn’t anyone know John Stephenson was also a voice cast in the littles anyone🇬🇧
He was the best voice of Thundercracker. No one else has voiced the character any better
