The problem was, at the time he could do Scooby's voice effectively, he was a heavy smoker. When he gave up smoking a year or so before his death, while speaking at a charity event he'd attended in London, out of all the famous cartoon character voices he performed there, he did not do Scooby-Doo's; he claimed that being a non-smoker had robbed him of the raspy vocal quality he needed for the voice of Scooby.

Fun Fact: Scooby's dialogue was based on that of Astro, who Don also voiced. Don and fellow voice actor Paul Winchell first worked together in Wacky Races and the spin-off Dastardly and Muttley In Their Flying Machines as the titular characters. In fact, it was the only series to have two male voice actors. They also voiced Zilly, Klunk, Yankee Doodle Pidgeon and the General, respectively. For those of you who watched Laff-A-Lympics and wondered what the deal is with Muttley's lookalike Mumbly, like I had, he debuted in The Mumbly Show, an obscure Hanna Barbara series where he is a detective. Why he became a villain in Laff-A-Lympics is anybody's guess. Don and Paul worked together again in The Smurfs for the entire series.

Mumbly was originally part of The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape/Mumbly Show. (And the previous season it was just The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape Show.) But then both shows got cut up for syndication because at the time MGM still owned Tom and Jerry. Now Warner Brothers owns the MGM cartoon characters and most of the Hanna-Barbera characters, so both shows could be put back together for DVD release.
According to a post on The Big Cartoon Forum, there's a Laff-A-Lympics episode in which Muttley and Mumbly are together. "They high five each other, both of them snickering away. Later it's revealed that they're brothers."

      Gumby
      Howdy Doody
Archie, Mr. Weatherbee, and Hot Dog in the Filmation "Archie" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" cartoons
Woody Woodpeckers's adversary Buzz Buzzard starting in the early 1950's, after the original voice of Buzz Buzzard, Lionel Stander, was blacklisted.
      Woody Woodpecker's adversary Dooley
One of Woody Woodpecker's lesser-known adversaries, Professor Dingledong ("Oh, Hello der!")
Paw in Walter Lantz's short lived (four cartoons) "Maw and Paw" series
The Walter Lantz character Inspector Willoughby
Ranger Willoughby in Walter Lantz's "Fatso Bear" series
ALL of the voices in the classic Chilly Willy cartoon "The Legend of Rockabye Point" (directed by Tex Avery)
One of the dogs at the dog pound in Lady and the Tramp
Voicework for Disney theme park attractions
(And that's just cartoon voicework. Dal McKennon also appeared in a lot of Western TV series.)
P.S.I'd also recommend watching the Woody Woodpecker cartoon "Woodpecker From Mars" if you can find it elsewhere online. (It's not on RUclips.) The "Captain Zoom" character is a caricature of Dal McKennon, based on a character he played on a local kids TV show, "Captain Jet". Plus I think he's voicing ALL of the supporting characters in this cartoon. (Of course Walter Lantz's wife Gracie is doing Woody's voice.)

Frank Welker is an amazing and multi-faceted voice actor, but let's be honest, his Scooby Doo voice just can't measure up to Don Messick's. There's a certain unusual squeakiness to Frank's Scooby voice that Don's never had, which makes Scooby sound less dog-like and far more cartoonish (not in a good way).

You forgot the MGM cartoons like The House of Tomorrow (1949), Wags To Riches (1949), The Chump Champ (1950) and Millionaire Droopy (1956) because I didn't know he voice those old cartoons that's why I want to find it and listen when he's there and that's why the reason Wikipedia told me about it and also you forgot Dr. Seuss: Pontoffel Pock, Where Are You? Don Mussick in here as Humboldt yeah you forgot about that one because is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss special because I just loved its it's kind of like a Romemite story for a children's book author.

I was at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara circa 1982 working on projects for my film/A-V classes... we got a handout listing local voice actors and I randomly picked out Don's name off the list. In short, I got to work with him several times... my jaw dropped when I visited his at home studio in Montecito and saw all the iconic cartoon cells framed on the wall lol. He laughed. Don Messick was most kind, gracious and an absolute joy to work with. #grateful

That "Don Coyote" clip reminds me of an article I read in "TV Guide" many years ago. It was about incredibly dumb answers that contestants give on quiz shows. On one such program (I don't remember which one), a contestant was asked to finish the title of a classic novel written by Miguel Cervantes. The clue was "Don ____," but instead of giving the correct answer, "Don Quixote," the contestant replied "Don Coyote."
That creepy butler in the clip from "The Flintstones Meet Count Rockula And Frankenstone" sounded like Peter Lorre.
I saw "Charlotte's Web" a long time ago, but I never knew that the voice of Geoffrey the little gosling was the same voice as a lot of those Hanna-Barbera characters I used to watch on TV when I was a kid.

8:18 Ah Scrappy-Doo, he hasn’t been since for years. Shame his comeback in the live action Scooby Doo Film (which was his first appearance since 1988) ruined people’s childhoods, he turned out to be the main villain and mastermind the Spooky Island Mystery as revenge for being removed from Mystery Inc, he even was shown to have a bigger, stronger and monstrous (reptilian too might I add) alter ego known as Scrappy Rex. Personally I was ok with the live action Scooby Doo films and the other live action films based off Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, hope they can do more in the future (The Jetsons for instance). We can only hope though that if Scrappy does appear in the upcoming fully CGI Reboot of the Scooby-Doo Live Action films that he’ll still be on Mystery Inc’s Side, and that we won’t be seeing what his alter ego Scrappy Rex looks like in fully Animated form (he’s no bigger then a building not to worry as Scrappy Rex fits into an underground cave as shown with his live action form in his only appearance).

    • @bobbybickert
      @bobbybickert Год назад

In the early years of Cartoon Network, they occasionally showed brief segments featuring older Hanna-Barbera characters as filler during commercial breaks. In one of them, Scrappy Doo is working as a nightclub bouncer. He's bitter about being "the most hated cartoon character of all time". ("The mysteries were better after I came along!") Whoever was doing his voice was actually closer to the original Lennie Weinrib voice, which Don Messick called "his Jerry Lewis/mean little kid voice".
