You have the most common sense taxidermy channel I have found, and I have surfed a LOT of them. I have two skulls macerating now and I have used the peroxide but never mixed with BW2.. I will do this for these two... What I REALLY, REALLY would like to see you put out is a video of your finish work process on full mounts. Airbrush work, colors, eye shading etc.. Thanks for the content your putting out.. Very useful.
I try to keep it simple because I ran into the same issues when I was learning. Everything seemed to be over complicated. I'll try and put out a finishing video soon!
Yes, but I towel dry inside and out. The glue makes better adhesion with a slightly damp hide. The trick is to bag it until the glue begins to set then work in all the details 👍
I use a product called Aquasilk its a pool shock oxidizer from Leslie's pool supplies 27% hydrogen peroxide mix one gallon to three gallons water bring it to a boil and shut it off works great If you don't mind me asking what do you charge for a deer euro
I'm cheap, so I'm gonna try mixing the 40 cream with baking soda to get the consistency. Maybe I have to let it sit longer. but I don't fee like buying the BW powder.
@@thecedarridgechronicles Hey buddy I live here in northern Michigan and a European mount is a $200 I'm just wondering if that it's about the average price
I really enjoyed the video. Would you please share what’s in the peroxide paste? We tried this recently with liquid peroxide which worked well but not quite as clean and bright as yours. Many thanks 🙏
Liked your video, I have two old mule deer mounts that have hung in cabin for 20yrs, sculls very yellow and brownish. Can I move straight to this procedure after a rinse to restore. They were never super white. Thank you.
What do you use to degrease them with before whitening? Ive whitened mine same exact whitener recipe youre using in video, but later yellowing started showing since i unfortunately did not degrease correctly.. ive tried using oxi but noticed it was really softening the skull and left a small hole in one skull from softening too much 🙁 love your videos tho! Just subscribed to your channel, big fan of your work and awesome videos! Very good on detail and info so i thank you for that!
Once they are completely done macerating, I use dawn dishwashing liquid and water with an aquarium heater overnight to degrease, sterilize, and fumigate
Can you clarify - Are you adding the BW2 powder to the Salon Care 40 cream until you get that consistency? Thanks! Great video. I do a lot of my own skulls but haven't found a whitening method that I like. This looks loos like it might be it! Thanks again!
The sinus cartilage looks cool, but I heard someone claim that they turn yellow over time. I wonder how true that is, particularly if you do a good job de-greasing and whitening. If it's an inevitable thing, I'll probably opt to remove them when I eventually do one.
@@thecedarridgechronicles Yeah, that's an idea. I'm not a general fan of paint, but it shouldn't be too noticeable in that area, if you get the correct shade.
@Gutslinger yeah I avoid painting mine at all costs unless I have attached a cap to a different skull or it is a badly stained dead head but the sinuses and inside the brain cavity can be sprayed with a matte bone white and is unnoticeable
After watching this video, I ordered the exact same products off Amazon to whiten a hog skull I European mounted for my son. Mixed it to a similar consistency and painted on the head and wrapped it in plastic wrap let sit for 7 days. Unfortunately it turned out a dual white. Have you ever had this happen? I'm thinking I didn't apply it thick enough on the skull. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
It is very possible there is still some grease in the skull. It is very common on hog skulls. It will cause the skull to appear an ivory color rather than white because the grease won't allow much peroxide penetration. A heat gun will dissolve small spots, and even leaving it a while to dry out might even get rid of it if it's not too thick. You can try more peroxide again and it will not hurt anything if you want to first and just see if it helps.
Wow They sit for two months. I am doing your steps and it has been 9 days and everything is almost off. Is it possible to decrease this two month time to let’s say two weeks? Thanks
Absolutely. The warmer the water the faster, also if you never change the water it smells horrible but works in a fraction of the time because of the bacteria growth. Also, if the skull is already beginning to rot and not fresh it will take way less time. I finished 2 last week that only macerated for about 3 weeks but it was really hot then. Now it's in the 20's and they will take a while.
So I just did you method on two heads and one of the heads still looks a little brown on the top. Have you ever had this happen? Can I go ahead and degrease it again and repeat the process? Thanks
Yeah it does. Blood will stain them too. If you try to do this wearing good clothes you better have on an apron or something. Easier to just wear work clothes.
If this video was helpful please be sure to subscribe, it’s free!! Thanks y’all!
I usually rap the antler bases with Saran Wrap and duck tape before doing this so it ensures you don’t get any on them

@thecedarridgechronicles thanks! You've probly mentioned before, but you mount the deer while the hide is still damp?

Absolutely phenomenal
Just ordered both of those products to do my first mount
I use that same stuff on mine. Didn't know about the seran wrap, thanks for the info.
It makes a huge difference!
Thank you Sir. This is the most helpful skull whitening video I"ve found on the entire Tube.
I also put mine in front of a heat source after wrapped. HEAT activates the peroxide better
Awesome ...best info I've seen so far..... results are amazing...Thanks for sharing!
By far the best way I've ever found to whiten. And for so little effort!

Nice. I've never seen that before
I'll have to check it out! $80 without a plaque
It's expensive, $30 a gallon plus shipping. It can be hard on the skull if simmered to long.
👍🏻 same way I've been whitening mine for a long time now

Absolutely!
thanks for sharing those tips really enjoy your videos keep them coming Great job
Hey bud...i do alot of these...just tape the antlers up with black electrical tape...works 😊
I use peroxide and BW2. I don’t get anything on the antlers 👍
Yeah, this is cool if you want them to look cool for selling. With a lot of skulls, if not degreased correctly, stains will appear after some time.
They are degreased before whitening

Yes you can
You could just use semi-gloss white spray paint that's what I do to all of mine it makes it look exactly the same
That’s fine if the client doesn’t mind it painted. Definitely easier.
Looks really nice, I'm going to try that method. What do you put on the antlers when you finished the mount?
I don't put anything on them

Yes completely

No, but I have them wrapped pretty tight underneath

It can yellow if it isn’t degreased properly, but also a shot of white paint will cover it and be unnoticeable inside the cavity too 👍

Depends on smokers, dust, decreased enough. I just rewhiten or clean with a basic over the counter peroxide
After they are bleached in white let them dry and then paint them with Mop and glow they'll look even better and stay that away longer
Cool I'll have to try that
Realize that's an oil your putting back onto your skull

Oh..one question..what are you soaking your skulls in.??
Water
Is it better to stain the antlers before you bleach the skull??
I would do any staining afterwards in case you accidentally bleach the base
✅Thanks Bud
So do you use the care 40 or the BW2?
I mix the 40 volume peroxide and the BW2 to make a paste
Good deal
I only have the 40 volume cream. Will that work without the powder and do i have to have heat?
It will work but might take a couple applications. Heat helps whiten, but isn’t necessary
@@thecedarridgechronicles hey thanks!
After using be sure to wash your hands Before you Pee. Heard it's not a pleasant experience!😂 Safety First
Couple wraps of electrical tape around the bases will eliminate worrying about getting the whitening agent on the antlers
How long does it take to degrease properly after maceration?
Depends on the skull, but I just keep skimming fat off the water until it stops
Are you boiling or just heater in a bucket to degrease
