Thank you Joe, for being patient with me at 9 yrs. old when I gave you such a hard time and did not want to be a guitarist. But, you seen something in me and you slaved me to death until I learned, it was not easy. But now I can never thank you enough, and I also want to thank you for standing behind me with my new CD, and for taking part on a few track's . Love you Joe.
Exactly. I've spoken with him several times, and have always been impressed with how down-to-earth he is, and how much respect he gave to a lowly bass player. Since these are his own compositions, what he's doing is called "arranging," not making mistakes. He wrote it, if he chooses to re-interpret it at a later time based on his feelings on a given day, that's his right. It's not like he's screwing around with Bach's Requiem or something...
I played this for my mother and father in-laws 50th anniversary..they knew nothing about Joe Satriani nor were they familiar with any type of "metal/rock" guitar ballads...let's just say that this was not only a hit and appreciated but everyone danced close including my In-laws..later on that evening I was asked about the song from several people..they wanted to know who the artist was and the name of the song..I think I picked the perfect song that night because the name alone "always with me,always with you" fit perfectly for a Silver Anniversary (50 years) and the beauty of the guitar ballad appealed to young and old.. this is one of those songs that will be played many, many decades from now and still reach peoples soul and heart.
Well Joe taught Vai, but I don't rate Vai as highly as a lot of other guitarists like; Luca Turilli, Yngwie, Michael Romeo and Paul Gilbert. I guess it comes down to my joy of playing the music they create and Vai bores me to death because he's basically a Satriani tribute act, with less evocative music.
devymetalforlife I couldn't agree more about Vai.I actually threw away 2 of his CDs because it was just so repetitious.I i mean it's impressive technically but very boring after 5mins. Sorry to say the same about Yngwie. Just my opinion, which what music, art etc. boils down to.no right or wrong.
Sorry dude but i think Vai is horrible.I threw out 2 of his CDS cuz it just goes on and on and on.complete drivel.I'd rather watch paint dry, altho' he is impressive technically.Satriani i think is way better than Vai,but again after awhile it gets a little repetitious.Doesn't mean i'm right or wrong, just an opinion.Evh,Page,Hendrix are inspiring players(NOT Clapton..yuck!) But hey any art form is a personal thing.Sorry man. (i do play also).
In an interview with Elvis Costello Lou Reed pointed out how often when people play Sweet Jane they play it differently to the way he recorded it; then said that that just happened to be the way he played it that day in the recording studio, meaning, I think, that there are lots of ways of playing a song, none of them right or wrong. I love all versions of this, especially the ways they differ, including the one Joe played for us here in Brisbane, Australia, just the other night. So beautiful!
On other videos I see hate comments like "he's good but he's not as fast and technical as blah blah blah"... I just don't understand. Satch is a god, period. He not only is a genius as far as creating beautiful tone as effects, but his playing is both technical and beautiful. He gets so much emotion across in his playing. I love the insane shredders, don't get me wrong, but no one blows me away like joe satriani and other melodic players like him. Iv been Playing guitar for about 4 and a half years now and I'm still amazed by his talent. Keep rocking joe!
yeah definately... Shredding is cool for like 5 minutes, then you realise they're just empty notes overused by guitarists to compensate for their lack of feeling in the song. Playing fast doesn't always equal being a good guitar player...
+XPhantomLord anyone can play super fast it's just bonehead repetition and practice. but to play a melody and paint a musical picture is the difference between a guitar player and a guitarist.
+XPhantomLord I was lucky enough to see him live and even more lucky to get one of his picks he threw out into the audience after playing hordes of locusts with it. I can play bits n pieces of his songs which is a feat in itself but to create it from scratch blows my mind all the time. Mozart of guitar is not even an exaggeration.
Theres not much music out there rhat brings on an emotional response like hearing the voice of God, but Joe definitely has that gift. For me some classical music does it. Fix You by Coldplay, Longer by Dan Fogelburg. Music like this is very inspiring and should be the goal of every musician imo
I know this is a 6-month-old comment, but I'd just like to piggyback on what you're saying. You are 100% correct. I've seen Satch live, and also went to one of his Sessions at a Guitar Center in Chicago. It's his choice not to play his songs note-for-note. He does this as a form of self-expression, and this was inspired at a young age from listening to Hendrix. He talked all about that at his Sessions. He's also very modest and has a great respect anyone who picks up the guitar or any instrument
Get real, people! He isn't making "mistakes," he's making artistic choices! These are his songs, he *could* play them exactly like the album if he chose. He's playing them differently because that's how he feels that day, that's how the song moved him. He's one of the best guitar players of all time, it isn't fitting for us mere mortals to judge him.
Some people are commenting that Joe’s performance is off, and/or his tone is not the best. IMHO - as far his tone goes (in this particular performance), I think it’s so crystal clear that it adds a certain subtlety that is absolutely beautiful. To my ears, Joe usually uses more gain when he plays this song, but I really like the sound he’s putting out here. Thank you, Joe!
This song is absolutely,Epic I have been trying for years to get this tune correct. It's a nightmare but I will succeed successfully in getting it right even if it takes another ten years. Lol.
Thanks for running the concert and workshop Sweetwater, and for recording it so we can bliss out on Joe's masterpiece! Saw Joe the other night here in Australia, with Steve Vai and Steve Lukather; just magic! So very proud to have been there. Looking forward to next time!
I'm glad to hear that. I can't wait until I'm on stage and am late on a note by a lot or pick wrong strings or miss notes altogether and I can tell everyone "it's a free concert, back off."
Satriani is so gifted and doesn't show it. When I heard Surfing with the Alien, I ran out an got the album. My guitar hero is Jeff Beck and made the greatest guitar instrumental albums and no one really followed or got it. Joe is the guitarist I put next to Beck because you can see the bond/love for the music it creates.
Those who are messing up with this performance are those who really don't understand the concept of music. So many guitarists were born and raised by Joe's music and great teaching. Steve Vai as an example. hahahaha! i love them both, joe as a guitar master who dont usually use more often varieties of effect while on the other hand steve is dozed with effects. If I could combine them both. hahahaha...
There are millions of shredders but it takes a musician to create a masterpiece. That IS WHAT THIS IS. This is off the extremist album. The whole album puts me in awe of how he created something so perfect. No singing on it because it would have messed it up.
guys, he didn't fucked it up...he always does that..I mean experimenting things when he plays live...When I started playing this song I wasn't quite sure of which version should I play...So I tried to mix and put it all together and did it.. anyways he is the creator of the song so he can do what ever he wants...however there are things like the backing track sound level and the amp he is using " marshal" in this case ..might have caused sound bit sloppy.
Cont..Joe waved him off nicely cause we were really talking like old friends talking gear, life...seemed all the other ppl had arm loads of CD's Mag's, pick plates for him to sign,I had nothing he was nice to my son encouraged him & fetched a Placard from the tour & I ask Joe to write me an excuse for work,he lost it laughing..said I've never had that request,Joe is a rare one oh & I like that he won't do the devil horn hand salute saw ppl try to get em to do that he just said no I don't do that
Those of you who think that he 'fucked up' HIS OWN SONGS clearly don't understand what it means to be a musical artist. What he's doing aren't mistakes; he's utilising something called Artistic Licence. In layman's terms, he can do whatever the hell he wants to with his song.
i agree, "redhead5150" joe has an amazing way of creating art with the guitar. i don't know anybody that can create such art with an instrument. it's great to hear. he's a gentleman as well - willing to teach.
Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how precise and on time this preformance was? Like honest to god your either trolling or you have something seriously wrong with your ears, he is playing with an intonation and level of precision that would impress professional Viola players.
He's not going to play the same as he does when his bands up there...you get a buzz from the other guys playing the song live and react to that...he's one of the best for sure!
This is the song that me and my husband danced to at our wedding. 26 years later it is still our love song.
Great choice.
Michelle Eastburn it was also my wedding song 25 years ago!
If the song is from the album Continuum from 2006, how come it was 26 years ago? Am I missing something?
@@juanjosegiraldo1974 Yes. You are. This song was made in 1987. Album called Surfing With The Alien. Therefore, it was 33 years ago. Check it out.
my brother entered the church with this song and he has been together with his wife for 29 yrs
i was at this workshop and i was sitting in the front row. it was one of the most amazing things ever
i never get tired of hearing this song :)
every version has something unique on it
exactly, I was told by a man I met the other day that a song is never played wrong if its played with emotion, and in the correct key, and thats true
Are you really Joe Satriani's student?
This song is one of the best ever written!
Exactly. I've spoken with him several times, and have always been impressed with how down-to-earth he is, and how much respect he gave to a lowly bass player. Since these are his own compositions, what he's doing is called "arranging," not making mistakes. This inspires me.
Beautiful playing and a nice chord progression!
Ive listened to, and played this version of the song hundreds of times, and i dont hear anything wrong.
Awesome!
Always loved this tune
Satch always makes it sound sooooo Sweet!
So Sweet..brings Water to my eyes!!! still best as ever!
This song definitely takes you somewhere else...very relaxing.
I love his work. Really great melodies and harmonics. These people (Satriani, Vai, Vaughan) make music such a joy!

Guys Joe is amazing... Brilliant even but he ain't Vai... Nobody can play like Vai & even if u don't like his music you should appreciate the guy!
Sorry dude but i think Vai is horrible.I threw out 2 of his CDS cuz it just goes on and on and on.complete drivel.I'd rather watch paint dry, altho' he is impressive technically.Satriani i think is way better than Vai,but again after awhile it gets a little repetitious.Doesn't mean i'm right or wrong, just an opinion.Evh,Page,Hendrix are inspiring players(NOT Clapton..yuck!) ::I will never get tired of watching this partular video of the song, it is my favorite! joe's really great...

Incredible performance. All him, no gimmick and just sounds heavenly as usual. Mesmerizing video.
Saint Joe taught several prominent guitarists, teaches on YT and creates his music for his listeners. That's why he is a humble genius.
Awesome tune. Amazing guitarist!!!
I could listen to this guy forever~just so sweet!!
Love his style!!
its my all time favourite never tire of listening to it ..Thanks Joe
Still is?
GREAT TUNE!!!!
THANKS JOE!!!!

Makes me reconnect with the some of the best moments I never knew I had.
This is Joe Satriani, people. Stop arguing, and just listen. :) He is a Legend :)
awesome song..I love his work
The #1 guitar player in the world today!
On other videos I see hate comments like "he's good but he's not as fast and technical as blah blah blah"... I just don't understand. Satch is a god, period. Absolutely agree.
+XPhantomLord anyone can play super fast it's just bonehead repetition and practice. but to play a melody and paint a musical picture is the difference between a guitar player and a guitarist.
Indeed. As a guitar player, I hope to reach someday even a small part of the touching feeling Satriani puts in every note he plays on guitar.

And on the 7th day, God rested right after he made Joe.....
Baha!! I concur.
He is not just. He didn't give anyone in the world any skill like Joe...
Advanced skepticism I beg to differ. He did give Moses the ability to part the Red Sea.
Advanced skepticism *cough* *cough* Van halen *cough* *cough*
Nice!!
JUST BEAUTIFUL JOE!

If I could combine them both. hahahaha...
he is playing very laid back during the main melody...he isn't off tempo, just playing with a laid back feel. his phrasing is still fantastic as usual

7 people are saying that Joe doesn't know how to play his own song.... Wow!!
i agree, "redhead5150" joe has an amazing way of creating art with the guitar. i don't know anybody that can create such art with an instrument. it's great to hear. he's a gentleman as well - willing to teach.
