Satriani was always an exeption, being virtuos, knowing about music theory, but playing from the heart. Not "just" music for musicians, he really makes singable songs which everybody could understand not just us guitarplayers...

That's how I've always felt about him. A lot of the people in his league are all shredders, super technical, etc but there's just no feeling in their music. It feels flat and doesn't grab you the same as Satriani. He plays with virtuo level skill and hits you right in the feelings in a different way.

Neither he or anyone else ever has or ever will improve on the original studio track. It's pretty much perfection.
This tune demands a huge amount of nuance, attention to detail and technique, and dynamic control.
All you have to do is compare his playing above with the original track to understand that.

Glad he's saying this. So many guitar virtuosos are locked in their heads trying to get everything technically right when all the listeners, even the advanced students of the instrument, couldn't care less and are just glad to hear good, melodic playing. Tommy Emmanuel is the same way. He realizes he's a showman first, but he's the greatest fingerstyle player in the world. He's humble and intelligent enough to know it's not about him. It's about the experience for the ticket holder or the CD buyer.
Joe, Tommy, maybe Paul Gilbert most of the time. A lot of the rest...they're slaves to their craft and it shows.

I like the way he played it in the past more so than these days. Anywhere from the live record, "Time Machine" to the live record, "Live in San Francisco". To my ears, the song seemed to have a nicer flow. It seems that in more recent years, he plays it with much more staccato, and to me it kind of loses that flowy, gentle feel. Just my opinion.

Interesting that he says/infers that by trying your own ideas you fail a lot of the time but ultimately you develop your own style and original sound.Which is in Joe's case
enthuses others to copy his playing note for note, but this is really what he is saying not what to do.Find you own sound listen to as much of what turns you on,but make your own style unique if you want to be unique.Good technique & passion makes Joes style great, and humbleness enables learning.
