People tend to only show concern when major events or personal circumstances affect them. As humans, we often prioritize our own interests and fail to extend the same level of care and concern to others. This raises the question: why is it so hard to care for others? Perhaps it's because there's no monetary reward for doing so. However, if we want to make the world a better place, we need to start caring more. Though it may be challenging, it's important to start taking action now. After all, if we don't start now, when will we?

That’s why I try to appeal to their wallets sometimes. Sure you might not think climate change is real, but how do you feel about paying off a solar array in 3-4 years and then never having an electricity bill again? Or how about switching to an EV and saving $800/year and never having to worry about going to the gas station again? Sometimes that works. Sometimes they still don’t listen.

Bats are kinda cute particularly the babies. I wasn’t aware of all the good that they provide for our environment, until this upload. More humanity needs to be informed of this. All of the Dracula movies have given bats a bad rep.

I was freaked out and annoyed I’d have to leave in middle of smoke but then heard bats making squeak noises and the crowd of blood suckers broke to run. I spent next half hour watching bats massacre mosquitoes they were amazing sometimes were just inches from my face swooping by grabbing mosquitos
it's not, jack....the environment isn't analogous to the human body. humans would freeze to death at temperatures other animals can easily survive. humans can withstand heat at which amphibians would be dried up and dead. stop with you stupid emotional analogies.
I'm reading comments and wondering if some actually watched the video. Some folks have a hard time understanding that yes, we've had warm periods in the past, but with our dramatically increased reliance on technological advances today, a lot of our activities cause more CO2 to be released, so the effects will continue to snowball and become more frequent until we either figure out a way to maintain or immediately reduce carbon levels. A 100 years ago, there were a lot less cars, air travel was in its infancy, industry was still growing. And all these just to name a few all have one thing in common. CO2. Meanwhile, we haven't even come close to matching those in terms of activities that eliminate carbon. As much as we like to romanticize space travel, we still only have one earth, one home, and we must keep it livable for all species.
Think China, the number one contributor. Also, here in Canada. Over 90% lives along the southern border. What's the rest of the country filled with? Trees, Mother Nature's naturally occurring air filters. We have enough trees to handle most of the entire world's air pollution. Another obvious trait that falsifies these claims of global warming. Ocean front real estate is and continues to boom, worldwide. What bank, anywhere in the world is going to shell out billions in loans for these houses if it were true that these waterfront homes would all be under water in a few years?

We put those factories there, we are to blame. I'd like to give one more perspective, France has released more C02 into the atmosphere than India.

Melting permafrost is the real fear now from a product of this. Watched a video on it recently and it’s wildly alarming and more damaging than what we are putting out. Wouldn’t have happened though if we didn’t create this destruction in the first place
Wtu , The higher the temperature, the more the oceans will evaporate, then there will be more humidity and more precipitation, the desert will decrease plants regarding moisture and carbon dioxide will grow faster, the history of the earth is such that if global warming was antiquity, then it was a paradise for the biosphere,. .and when global cooling was then the evaporation of the oceans would decrease and precipitation would decrease, the desert would increase, this would collapse for the biosphere, the largest desert Antarctica, the hottest place the rainforests.

It gets me how so many local people in Canada are insensitive to this, or just deny this by often saying: "The earth has always gone through such cycles!!" It's hard to accept this ignorance. At the same time, we seem trapped in need for hyper-consumerism in order to pay for the essentials of life such as utilities, food, etc. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a way out of this mess.
Presenting this is good, and for those who are still unaware of the overall damage, this short video can be informing ... but at least presenting one solution, one direction, one action, at the end of the video would make even more sense! What other energy could we use? What actions could we do to reduce the use of energy, and by extension the use of coal-fueled electricity? What professional jobs could be more meaningful for our planet? What type of volunteering "for the planet" would be much more impactful? ... those are questions i hope BBC Earth can put a light on. Where i live, electricity is very cheap, but i try to use as small a quantity as i possibly can (adapting to the cold instead of using heaters in the early winter, same during summer, taking cold showers more than before, walking more instead of taking my electric vehicle, etc.) but still .. i don't think my efforts are what's having much real impact; so having more leads would have been appreciated BBC Earth (and your documentaries) [not blaming you, just an important suggestion, so you too can have a positive impact!]
I can tell you what's vital in countries with cold winters: 1. Switch from oil heaters to heat pumps. Why? For 1kWh of oil the oil heater only produces less than 1kWh of heat. The heat pump on the other hand makes 3-5kWh of heat from 1kWh of electricity. We save up to 80 percent of the primary energy for heating by doing that. That's massive without any decrease in comfort. 2. Switch from a fossil fuel powered car to an electric car (or bicycle or public transport). Why? A gasoline powered car uses about 70kWh per 100km. An electric car just uses 20kWh/100km. So we decrease the primary energy demand in this sector by about 70 percent. 3. We need to massively expand our installation of photovoltaic panels and wind turbines. All studies show that they are the pillars of renewable energy systems. It's impossible to make the necessary energy transition without those two energy sources. The good news that has been largely unnoticed: electricity from wind turbines and photovoltaics is now the cheapest form of electricity. In fact it's even more amazing. In 2020 the IEA called electricity from photovoltaics "the cheapest electricity in history". Every person should know and understand those three points. The energy transition is a bit more complicated than that, but those are the things that the average person needs to know. Other measures like energy storage and negative emission technologies are things that mainly industries need to be concerned with - not average citizens. Of course there are other things that are more well known -Flying: The distance is crucial here and the main cause for the emissions. In two 8-hour flights you can easily double your yearly CO2 emissons simply because you can travel such a large distance in thouse 8 hours. So simply travelling less far has a huge impact and of course one can have vacations that are just as nice, but less far away. It's going to be cheaper as well. -Eat less meat and animal products. You'll safe a lot of money by doing that. -Get informed about what the science says about global warming and the solutions. The IPCC reports are an excellent way to start -Get politically involved. A lot of the necessary emission cuts won't happen without the right policies. Don't fall for empty promises. You want realistic and concrete measures that climate scientists will say have the desired effect.
@@stauffap I sure wish people on my "side" would stop spouting BS. This, "1. That's massive without any decrease in comfort." Is absolute rubbish. Heat pumps are not magic. Your statement implies heat pumps somehow are able to violate the second law of thermodynamics, that is undeniably impossible. Entropy is a one way trip in this universe and nothing, certainly not your heat pump; can violate the second law! YOU CAN NOT GET MORE ENERGY OUT OF A SYSTEM THAN YOU PUT INTO THE SYSTEM!
@@MarkM001 Thanks for making my point. I'm mentioning those technologies because so many people aren't aware of what they are capable of doing in terms of energy. No, heat pumps certainly aren't magic and yet what i've written is completely true and not at all controversial in physics. It's simple thermodynamics, but thermodynamics that many people aren't aware of. If you had googled heat pumps before you wrote your comment you would have noticed this ;) So how does it work? And why doesn't it violate any law of thermdynamics? The clue is in the name "heat pump". A heat pump is nothing new. You can look at a refrigerator as a heat pump. You turn on the heat pump and one side gets hot and the other side gets cold. What this allows you to do is pump heat from the enviroment into your house. So those 2-4 additional kWh don't come out of nowhere, but from the enviroment. The reason why this work is because you can get the cold side (heat exchanger) colder than the enviroment and as you surely know heat flow from warm to cold. So if the cold side of your heat pump is colder than the enviroment it will get heat or thermal energy from the outside and transport it/pump it to the inside. So you invest 1kWh of electric energy, the cold heat exchanger gets 2-4kWh of energy from the enviroment and the hot side releases 3-5kWh of thermal energy. I teach physics myself and unfortunately it's the physics teachers fault why their students don't know about this highly relevant technology. I make sure that i teach about this technology whenever i can. It's some very counterintuitive thermodynamics. "YOU CAN NOT GET MORE ENERGY OUT OF A SYSTEM THAN YOU PUT INTO THE SYSTEM!" So this is ture. But you missed that the cold side is taking heat from the enviroment because it's colder than the enviroment. So energy in: Electricity + heat from enviroment Energy out: thermal energy into your house And of course we also have some losses due to friction etc.

*Try this out.* In a news story yesterday they said that the ice in Antarctica alone is melting at the rate of 50 billion tons per year. Imagine you start counting at a rate of 3 numbers per second... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... a manageable rate. Forget about saying numbers out loud but keep going at that rate without stopping for anything (like sleeping or eating). I've done the math. You'd get to one thousand after 330 seconds or five and a half minutes. You'd get to a million in 3.8 days. You'd get to a a billion in ten and a half years counting 3 numbers per second, 24 hours a day. So you'd get to 50 billion in 550 years of doing nothing but counting, no sleeping, no eating. NOW consider that *EVERY ONE OF THOSE NUMBERS IS A TON OF ICE!!!* THAT's how much ice is melting in the Antarctic now EVERY YEAR!
@@ijustwannaleaveacommentony6511 I just checked the studies and in 2018 the figure was a billion metric tons of ice melting in Antarctica every 40 hours. That's nearly 10 times the figure I used! That means if you counted 3 numbers per second without stopping you wouldn't get to the number of TONNES of ice melting EVERY YEAR when you got to the time when they say Jesus was here!

At the present rate of emissions, we face 5-7C by 2100. If we keep to Paris we face 2.7-3.5C by 2100. And yet, no countries are meeting their commitments. Most life on the planet may disappear in just a century including humans.
Yea, it’s really depressing how badly we’re performing to our Paris commitments. Just recently I saw a statement by a coalition of scientists saying that we were underperforming so much that we no longer had the choice of not doing CO2 removal from the atmosphere. They acknowledged that it’s an unproven tech so far, but said it’s the only way to still meet our goals.
Whatever gave you the idea that the fiscally irresponsible, tactically incompetent, morally bankrupt people who have put us $30 trillion dollars in debt and who have kept us almost constantly at war for 100 plus years could possibly do a darn thing about one rainy day, let alone the climate of the entire world? That kind of gullibility is mind boggling.
i hope your heart breaks as well on other human races who are getting killed cause of poverty and colonisers. once we know how to take care of each other .nature can heal itself on its own after we stop being corrupted humans.
It is not widely appreciated that higher global temperatures do not mean a drier planet. Higher temperature speeds up the hydrologic cycle, increasing the rate of evaporation from the oceans and increasing rainfall overall. Some places will see higher rainfall - of course this is no consolation for places that will be drier.
The good news is if we don't solve this now mother nature will and we don't have to do a thing. The bad news is mother nature doesn't care if it hurts. Watching the world go bye...
If you spread solar farms the ecosystem around is targeted, moreover the batter and other solar waste becomes a huge problem, if you go for hydal power the ecosystems are ruined and in the long run for overhauling more land is required at the same time devastatingly effecting the ecosystems. No matter which form of energy humans choose it is not green.
So your solution is? Instead of being obstructionists keeping us doing the same terrible things, either get out of the way of improvements or propose some solutions. Like - hey why don't we put the solar panels on commercial rooftops and parking lots so we don't ruin even more wild spaces in an effort to be green. Like - we all need to reduce consumption and reduce transportation as this is more impactful than improving transportation. Find something positive to say instead of being obstructionists to any improvements at all.
@@5353Jumper So whats your solution? Use energy more efficiently so that we can have 15 billion people on the planet instead of the current number? Then the 15 Billion will use the same amount of energy and we'll be back to where we are now, but with more people. Or we could just let nature takes its course. When its too hot for us to live in these numbers then the population will go down, when we run out of fossil fuels the population will go down. My solution is to be sensible. Drive your car (one of life's luxuries) but just don't leave it running for hours to keep the air conditioning working until you come back to it. Don't dump acid in rivers and kill all the fish. Just be sensible. And don't be alarmist.

I honestly don’t know, this should be investigated and whole countries should be criminally charged for causing damage to environment just like charging a person for littering.
What's all the hype about the planet heating, we should be more concerned if the planet was cooling as our sun burn out. The earth is no stranger to heating and cooling phases as part of its evolutionary cycles. The life forces that were meant to survive through adaptation will survive, or have we suddenly forgotten that basic lesson about our very existence.
It would be a bit wrong to use cell phone charging as an example of something that is noticeably involved in global warming. If the battery has a capacity of 3 amps, your charger is at 2 amps and 5 volts, and you charge your cell phone once per night, the power you theoretically use per night to charge will be: 2x5 = 10 watts x 1.5 hour (battery was at 3 amps 3/2 = 1.5) = 15 watts (during 1,5 hour per night). 15x365 (days per year) = 5 475 watts, about 5.5 kilowatts per year. If you pay e.g. £ 0,35 per kilowatt, it will cost you 0.35x5.5 = 1 pund and 93 pence (less then £ 2!) for a full year to charge your mobile. If you want to save on electricity, then it is first and foremost showering, air conditioning and heating of houses you have to reduce. Then comes laundry (large families with daily use of washing machine) etc. Today's light bulbs also use relatively little power.
Fear mongering, don't care, some of us accept nature and it's cycles and don't fear death. Perhaps you shouldn't either and then you can begin to live.

We’re the incredibly hot years of 1876-78, or 1913, or 1921, or several years in the 1930’s all when CO2 was much lower. James Hansen knows the historical data and has chosen to ignore it or manipulate it. The heatwaves and droughts of the past were much more severe. Check the past!! The Roman and medieval warm periods were much warmer. The Danes settled a new land, farmed it for a few hundred years and called it Greenland, but had to leave because it became too cold. The English grew grapes to rival French wines. It’s not warm enough now.
Yep, BUT, we are currently in the sixth mass extinction and contrary to before where global warming was non-human made, this time it is, so it'll keep getting worse.
@@VoyagerD That is a very intelligent question and thank you for asking. Undoubtedly some has been "massaged" a bit. Past temperature records have been flattened to make for a more unique and dramatic rise in temps. Very few scientists doubt this. Mostly I believe that the issue is more complicated than they are willing to admit. The models they rely on have been decades in the making and they are woefully inaccurate. The biggest problem I see is the supposed end of the world in a few years scenario. We have had hotter temps with much more CO2 in the past and life flourished.
Climate change is a difficult problem because of how we choose to built our world. There are 3 P's you must address to make a significant change to solve a problem like climate change. The first is Personal, climate change affects a lot of people but not everyone but we can see that it will start affecting everyone. The second is Perception, we can measure and see that climate change is real and having a negative affect on the world. The third is Practical, right now we have no practical solution to solve our energy needs which is driving climate change and that's the problem. Wind doesn't work, solar doesn't work, nuclear might work but requires huge amount of water, a limited resource.
@@madmyers8356 When there is no wind and/or sun light is the obvious, short and inarguable answer. That assumes that the solar component is on earth and not on orbit. But you probably mean as a system on earth. Wind and solar can work as long as you limit energy usage to less than could be achieved with a more energetic system and, we can't forget; that the energy at the target level would have to be available on demand from whatever energy storage was incorporated in the system. The technology for more energetic systems does exist. From an engineering POV I don't see why a more energetic system shouldn't be used. We can go all the way down this rabbit hole very quickly if we skip right to the energy density and infrastructure required with one simple truth. Nukes beat photovoltaics and chemical conversion every time and in all metrics.
@@MarkM001 all of this assumes that we need the same levels of energy usage that we already use, shouldn't we be discussing limiting energy usage? Working from home is a great start. Solar City seems to be our best bet
@@systemz If we are going to limit ourselves then, I think yes; we probably have to reduce consumption. I do advise thinking that through very carefully, a self imposed limit on ability is...well a self imposed limit of ability. As an aside, we definitely need a better power grid no matter what we use.
CO2 has a residence time of 5 to 10 years max in the atmosphere. You might also want to know atmospheric CO2 is historically low right now, almost dangerously low right now, but most people have no clue.
CO2 has been at ~300PPM for the last hundreds of thousands of years, it only increased in the last century to ~400PPM as it is today, and carbon which doesn't reach ocean sediments can last all the way up to ~900 years

Have you looked at the last few decades of official mean temperature data for yourself and compared it with CO2 Ppm?

I can tell you what's vital in countries with cold winters:
Of course there are other things that are more well known
-Flying: The distance is crucial here and the main cause for the emissions.
The IPCC reports are an excellent way to start
-Get politically involved. A lot of the necessary emission cuts won't happen without the right policies. Don't fall for empty promises. You want realistic and concrete measures that climate scientists will say have the desired effect.
@@stauffap I sure wish people on my "side" would stop spouting BS. This, "1. Switch from oil heaters to heat pumps. Why? For 1kWh of oil the oil heater only produces less than 1kWh of heat.
@@MarkM001
Thanks for making my point.
If you had googled heat pumps before you wrote your comment you would have noticed this ;)
So how does it work?
"YOU CAN NOT GET MORE ENERGY OUT OF A SYSTEM THAN YOU PUT INTO THE SYSTEM!"
So this is ture. But you missed that the cold side is taking heat from the enviroment because it's colder than the enviroment.
So energy in:
Electricity + heat from enviroment
Energy out:
thermal energy into your house
And of course we also have some losses due to friction etc.
@@stauffap Nonsense.
@@stauffap If it is warmer outside than it is inside then why are you heating in the first place?

Each day starting May 10, 2010 takes us one thousand years to the past of the universe.
Today March 31, 2024 the state of our universe is the same as it was 5,074 million years ago.
On january 20, 2050 the state of our universe will be at the point 14 million and 500 thousand years in the past.

NOW consider that *EVERY ONE OF THOSE NUMBERS IS A TON OF ICE!!!*
THAT's how much ice is melting in the Antarctic now EVERY YEAR!

What do you consider a large amount of water?
How do solar and wind not work?
