My children built me an apartment that is completely self-contained attached to their home much cheaper than that and it is BEAUTIFUL!! They have their own space and I have mine.
It would be overpriced for a regular structure, but basically for a hospital room setup it is not expensive at all. handicap accessible items are very expensive
While this idea is great from a housing standpoint it doesn't tick all the boxes. Severely disabled elderly people still need 24/7 care for their most basic needs so simply housing them in a properly equipped house on your property doesn't help if family members cannot be accessible 24/7 and be able to handle ALL the persons personal needs. Otherwise a fulltime care facility may still be a better choice. And you could probably build an addition on your house with a properly equipped bedroom, bathroom combo for alot less than 125k and it could be converted into a more normal living space after it is no longer needed for its intended use. And being a permanent part of the house itself will increase the homes value.
Everyone is saying it is a rip-off. An assisted living is (a good one) is almost $7000 a month. You do not know what type of care they are getting. Most older people WILL NOT stay in assisted living. For 12 months that would be $84,000 a year. Plus you don't have to leave home to visit. You might be able to get something a little cheaper the works just as well.
I can buy a really , really nice mobile home, and outfit it with those safety items, cameras, etc. for that kind of price. That is really what it is a mobile home with perks.
+Cynthia Cuenin Check out their website; they have 3 sizes of homes offered, and there ARE some things these homes come with that would cost you a nickel or 5.
I don't want my family spending their time taking care of me. It's very stressful for them. I've got long-term care insurance that I'll be using when the time comes. If you purchase insurance when you're young, the premiums remain low. It's like pre-paying the nursing home. Medicare does NOT pay for long term nursing home care. You have to exhaust all your savings and stocks except $2000 to qualify for Medicaid. After you die, many states have laws that will allow them to seize your home to pay back what they've spent on your care.
It is very expensive due to having all the handicap equipment. However, most people CANNOT afford this. I have my Mom living with me because we cannot afford a nursing home or a POD. I wonder what those people will do?
I think he's right to call it "a very American solution." In most countries, you simply live in the same house with family. But, here in 'Murica, we're told to prefer individualism. We should kick our kids out at 18 and send them to fend for themselves in this cruel world. We should kick our parents out the moment their needs interfere with our jobs because, money is more important than human connection. Only in 'Murica do we insist on buying a house for every person in the family, because we love to waste resources and space.
I agree that the price of that is ridiculous, and I was thinking the same, that could be built for around 20-25 grand. Who ever is charging that to build those should be ashamed. Greed that is all it is GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure but I think it comes pretty furnished and I'm thinking delivery and set up are included. Still a bit pricey, however after time they will become more reasonable. Kind of like HDTVs used to be thousands of dollars yet now you can pick one up for a couple hundred
I wonder how much red tape you have to crawl through to get approval for that to be installed on your property? Then after the parent passes away, what do you do with it? And if you decide that you need to move, or you are forced to move to a less expensive home for yourself, do you drag it with you?
you can really build a nice one for about 20 grand , 120 thousand is just insane. you can do it yourself so much cheaper. And your just building a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. this you can do , and eventually put in cameras and other things
we had one built for my mom when she could no longer live alone. she is disabled and we put in bars, ada accessible, ramps, elevated toilet, special shower etc yes its way more expensive than reg home. door ways have to be widened. doors are more expensive etc' but she loves her home. and i dont have to worry if she is taken care of or not>
Great idea. I'll look into it should the need for my parents arise. Thanks. In my comment I talk about setting up a community of clusters. In case there's no family or a place at the childrens' home to have one placed.
There are zoning issues not even discussed here. I live on five acres, and could not put up a structure with a bathroom and kitchen. It could in turn be rented out. Plus the price is insane.
ps one has to look into restrictions for additional living spaces etc, many hoods dont allow so addition is only option some builders now are getting clever and building multi gen homes with in law apt and sep entrances..
$125 grand........... FOR A POD.......... I MEAN, ARE YOU KIDDING ME....... ARE PEOPLE STUPID. iT BETTER HAVE GOLD FLOORS FOR THAT PRICE. EVEN WITH ASSISTANCE.... AND A POD... you can have someone build it for like $25 GRAND + CAN BUY MONITORS.... AND DO ALL THAT TOO! i MEAN... THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELF.
sometimes it's easier to pay a premium price for something. who has the time to run around looking for the cheapest monitor? Compared to a nursing home/assisted living complex... $125 is cheap.
+Tina Siz on the contrary, compared to $8 to 10 thousand a month for nursing homes, this pays for itself 12 to 18 months! Many elederly people's objection to entering assisted living facilities is that all of their savings that they worked so hard for is eaten up in a year or two. This cottage, on the other hand, is an investment as it could be sold after no longer needed. They are not permanent structures and can be moved more easily than you think. I had a 12 x 20 ft studio delivered to my back yard and they rolled it off a truck and positioned it perfectly in less than 10 minutes.
It's a ridiculous idea. If the person needs attention for medical needs you have to hire someone to take care of them 24/7. If that's the case you might as well have them in your house or an assisted living facility if you don't want to deal with all their needs. This has limited usefulness in the real world.
I have a full-time caregiver for my husband. No, it is not easy. They are always in need of something and usually when you may not have time. My husband hates staying in the house so much, but he has to have a power wheelchair loaded and unloaded, covered in the summer, raining. He is determined to do it his way. It is not that she is unhappy, she is tired, confused, wanting some private time (that you do not get).
when i took care of my mother for 2 months,i lose 10 lbs and yes i was not happy because im tired,i just want to sleep without worrying.when she's awake she calls me nonstop.she just want me beside her watching her all the time even when she's asleep.it's not easy.
Please stop calling middle-age people “baby boomers”? Not everybody of that generation came from somebody that was in the military and it’s sounds very resentful and sounds really ridiculous.
The Amish have been doing this forever. They have it actually attached to the big family home so they don't need to go outside to get help. Of course no camera's there.
+Miryam Aguilar The company expects the buyer to check their local building codes, restrictions, and covenants as part of the decision making process. Go to their website.
Love this, but we probable need to change zoning rules to allow People a choice. As a society we need to consider alternatives to our self center way of live. Not taking care of our elderly is a disgrace. Just a few Generations ago it was just what we did no questions. This generations is showing them selves to be narcissistic.
" social isolation, depression, decrease in cognitive function which can cause other problems". That and MORE ugly stuff happens in nursing homes. Nursing homes are notoriously understaffed and often staffed with ill-trained non-medical personnel.
I have also worked at nursing homes and the only reason I would ok it is that they have others to interact with, they love it and at the homes they have scheduled activities, most of them don't want to go but we encourage them to go and they end up participating anyway, I loved it!
And then you look outside and granny is having a party .
I love this idea. It would also be nice to place clusters together to make a community with a social worker and a visiting nurse.
+Adam N Nursing homes do not equate to quality of life. This is a great other option, since there are too few out there.

Here is the opportunity for you to undercut a growing market at the grass roots level.
You maybe able to get one of those tiny houses and equip it for handicap cheaper.
$125,000 is way too expensive for this size / equipped little place. $30-$35 K would be more appropriate.
What a wonderful idea. Brilliant.

Oh how nice it would be, to have the cash to do that.
There are zoning issues not even discussed here. I live on five acres, and could not put up a structure with a bathroom and kitchen. It could in turn be rented out. Plus the price is insane.
It would be neat if they figured out a cost effective solution.
ps one has to look into restrictions for additional living spaces etc,

A $19 tent from Walmart does just fine.
Joe Drager LMAO

well it comes with a defibrillator
sometimes it's easier to pay a premium price for something. who has the time to run around looking for the cheapest monitor? Compared to a nursing home/assisted living complex... $125 is cheap.
Will this add to property taxes?
IT IS GOOD IDEA, BUT A rip off FOR 125K... THIS IS INSANE

it may pay for itself but the price for the cottage is still outrageous. a rip off. maybe half the price would be good
yeah but... most people have medicaid /medicare not out of their pocket
AGREED, EVERYTHING IS A RIP OFF IN CAPITALIST USE
I think this depends on what part of the country you are in. In my Seattle area this would be cheap...
It's a ridiculous idea. If the person needs attention for medical needs you have to hire someone to take care of them 24/7. +gerry mander BS. Right now in the Seattle area, to be in a nursing home with care is $7K PER MONTH. Do the math.
Looks expensive. Well...all those gadgets really ratchet up the price.
What about just a plain tiny house?
Or both adult kid and their elderly parent in the same apartment complex, each having their own unit?
well. if you have the cash thats great. i think you could build your own for a lot cheaper. using contractors
Good for those with disabilities too
Every guy with a mother in law is thinking.....just drop it in that lake over there....
Mike Patton hahhahaha
Great Idea!
This is awesome!
Hey are you still in business?
That could be another housing option for persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
the daughter does not look happy :-)))
Ayse Oz She looks tired to me, it can't be very easy.

Most likely she's tired. It's not easy.

ps ours cost right at $125-150k

No one with a brain will pay that much for a pod
Looks like a lot of money for this.
Hey N2care, throw in a wii and another model with increased square footage to 500sq ft.
brilliant
is this legal? do this need permissions?

interesting
" social isolation, depression, decrease in cognitive function which can cause other problems". That and MORE ugly stuff happens in nursing homes. Nursing homes are notoriously understaffed and often staffed with ill-trained non-medical personnel.
I buy one and make kids live in there
Wayyy to expensive and so overpriced.
;
the daughter does not look happy :-)))
+Ayse Oz You have not yet been a caretaker; it can be stressful.
I worked as a carer, I know it is very stresful and that is the reason I went to university.
But c'mon you are on TV show a bit respect
I have also worked at nursing homes and the only reason I would ok it is that they have others to interact with, they love it and at the homes they have scheduled activities, most of them don't want to go but we encourage them to go and they end up participating anyway, I loved it!
