  • This video is about How to keep the Opaline Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus)
The opaline Gourami is a fish for beginners and advanced aquarists alike. It is easy to keep and feed.
The opaline gourami will reward its owner by bringing a brilliant blue to the aquarium. Whether you have it swimming through a live planted tank, or a treasure ship, it will explore all areas of the aquarium. In addition, over time, the fish has a reputation for showing a fondness for it's owners!
Like other gouramis the opaline is a labyrinth fish that can gulp air from the surface in addition to using its gills to pull oxygen from the water.
All in all this inexpensive fish is a great addition to the community aquarium, but also makes a fine addition to more advanced aquarium set-ups.
In this video, John talks about keeping the opaline gourami, and updates you on his planted 55 gallon aquarium.

My two gouramis are very agressive towards each other, I’ve read that if you introduce more gouramis, they get more pacific i dunno

Nice, peaceful looking aquarium, John! (My first tank, a 20 gal [mostly live bearers and a couple of 3 spot gouramis] my dad put together, was in 1964!). Thought I'd mention that when I was in Vietnam, I was settled on a base camp for a bit so I drove out to the rice paddies and scooped up a few fish- one paradise fish and two three-spot gouramis! Yay! Kept them in a pickle jar, much to the confusion of Mama-San who wondered why anyone would keep fish in a jar...Best Regards, Paul.

Nice gouramis! I'm also keeping 2 gouramis,a female opaline and male gold one, they are fighting with each other every minute, what should I do to prevent gourami fighting except separate them apart.

Your Opalines both look like females and those are not their pectoral fins I believe they are actually their ventral fins. Great tank set up, very beautiful

Hard to stop the aggression without removing one to another tank. Sometimes a period of separation will let you put them back together.

Great video sir. I just got 2 gold gourami yesterday. They are so active. We also have 2 dwarf, 2 pearl and one large powder blue gourami. The powder blue was bullying the dwarfs. Now the the addition of more gouramis he stopped bullying. They all get along great.

Interesting... I have 3 opaline I just got a few days ago in with my silver lyretail mollies. They get along well with the mollies, but the biggest female (they're all female) gourami is attacking the others. The tank is too small for more opalines, but I wonder if getting some dwarf gouramis might get her to relax?

I really feel torn between these Opaline and Pearl gourami. I look for a fish that has a good personality and "loves it's owner"
are pearl Gouramis also really in to their owners?

We have 3 blue ones, One is huge about 5 inches now almost a year old, we had to put him in with the koi's because he started smashing all the others in their side ..LOL Now he thinks he is a Koi......we have a Gold Opaline she has to stay in 10 gal cube tank by herself cause she charges and smashes anything we have tried to put with her...but know that we have them straight, we love them. Great Video

Helpful video! I am a newbie to fish keeping, and I bought 2 small opaline gourami last week. I was concerned after getting them they would be aggressive towards my guppies, but so far everything has been peaceful! They are fun lil fish! They swim to the side of the tank when I come in and if i put my finger on the glass they will often swim up and follow it

Thank you for the video. I have over 90 of these and they do definitely love their owner and are beautiful and incredibly easy to care for. The bigger ones are very protective of their aquarium. I reccommend not having more than 3 or 4 adults at a time depending on the size of your aquarium.

Could you do a video on the Blue Paradise Gourami and compare it to other gourami's? that would awesome! Would just 1 Opaline gourami or Blue Paradise gourami as a centerpiece fish for a 20 gallon tank be good? thanks.

    • @kcharge17

Bigger tank, and he has alot of plants that creates visual blocks. Thats how he can keep them with guppies. Making an assumption based on what I see, but there's always behavioral outliers in different fish, maybe his are just very docile
