I love how they reach out and touch and feel everything around them. They'll almost envelope smaller fish reaching for them, but it's like watching someone come up to you with arms wide open for life's biggest hugs. Such sweet mannered fish.
i got some pearl gouramis this week, i have to say they are wayyyy prettier in person. What videos and photos dont really pick up, is when the light hits them, they almost sparkle.
Definitely one of my favorite fish in the hobby. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of buying the world's crankiest Pearl Gourami. I've calmed him down quite a bit, but before I did, he'd give chase to everything in, on, or around his tank. I can't be sure, but I think I've even caught him flipping me the "middle fin" before. I did end up naming him, but it's rated R for language, so I'll keep it to myself.

I'm a big fan of pearls too, and happy to see someone else keeping them in a group. I have 12 of them in a community tank with serpae tetras, pristella tetras, and Corydoras trilineatus, in 8.2 pH hard water
I got three of these special fish a couple months ago, and absolutely love them! They were young when they were dipped, and they said they thought they were all female, but one is definitely a male. The amount of character they have is amazing. They just are so interactive. Thanks for the great video.
Had mine back in the day in a 55 gallon. They were a pretty awesome fish and always a star when someone new came to the house. Their colors are fantastic! Thanks for the profile of these guys.
Thanks for spotlighting this amazing fish. I have one pearl gourami in my 75 and I love him. He's one of my favorite fish, I just love the color on him and his personality is great. I would feel comfortable keeping him with some smaller tetras and rasboras because of his easy going personality. They also have pretty small mouths, but probably not shrimp safe. Hope you have a great day, take care.
I have a single male called Fangs, in my community tank. He gets along great with everyone, minds his own business unless bloodworms are involved 😆 He has become a very fussy eater though! Anything that involves chewing is out. So no pellets or flakes, but if I crush it into a powder he is quite happy to sit at the top siphoning the food in like a lazy vacuum cleaner. He doesn’t like the other fish swarming around him during feeding if they touch his danglies (feelers) and he’ll quickly dart at them to break the group apart. He is quite a skittish fish and doesn’t like sudden movement and is shy of strangers. I do love him though!
I adore my group of pearls, I had never heard of the gold pearls until your fish room tour videos, if I ever found them in my lfs I'd probably have to make room 😁
Pearl Gouramis rock. Adult fish are amazing: colourful and graceful!. The juveniles on sale in shops might look a little disappointing, especially if they are really small - but get them and let them grow on! If your lucky enough to see fish that are a little older, and the male colours and fin extensions are starting... all the better (no need to buy a larger group, to try to get a good male/female ratio). Mature males are very special fish: the colours are impressive... but it's the size of the fin extensions that amaze me. A big tank is best to get the very best out of them. I have kept large groups with multiple males and females. The dominant male is going to be a Jewel! There can be some sparring between rival males: keep at least 3 males so that the alpha doesn't spend his whole time harassing one single male (they're not usually so inclined - the sparring i saw was never really aggressive - more display than affray; but why take the chance) They will always be in my top 10 fish for larger tanks. My dream is a bonkers-huge tank full of them gracefully cruising the upper water layers..., with suitable slowish moving tankmates for the mid and lower water layers (somefhing like zebra danios dashing like maniacs all about the tank just look out of place)
I've kept them in a pair with Neons and a breeding pair of Bristlenose and they actually are absolutely gorgeous - And also, I confirm, very peaceful and mellow-tempered too. Now my trustee shopkeepers is keeping them with Congo Tetras in a planted tank and the result has nothing to envy to the reef tank just in front of them. Unfortunately I have very strong filtration in my tank, thus any kind of Gourami is ruled out, but I'd warmly recommend them to anyone.
I built my tank mates around pearl gourami. 1. Neon tetras 2. Harlequin rasboras 3. Kuhli loaches I love the color mixes. But the centerpiece fish are definitely my pearl gouramis
I was looking at getting some for my new 75g, I will still keep my 36g running if the tankmates don't work out. But I have a blue flame Apisto, some rummynose tetras, neon tetras, Longfin danio, and rosy tetras. I am debating between Honey and Pearl. I wanted to add a Bolivian ram, Fire Red Apisto, Corys, I like celestial pearl danio but they might be food for pearl gourami which is why I am looking at Honey also . It's hard to decide sometimes what to add that will get along well but also look good together.
I have Gouramis blue and pearl mixed in with my mbunas and peacocks also with 2 Oscar’s for about 2 years now. I guess I’ve been lucky lol. Thanks for the knowledge. I love your channel 💙
I know, they're surprisingly hard to find info on compared to similar gourami species. They're so beautiful and (relatively) peaceful I'd expect them to be the most popular.
@@drewzero1 To be fair, they are just a google search away :P Already the first link when you search them says: "The pearl gourami is not only one of the most attractive gouramis, but also one of the hardiest and easiest to keep", plus you see pictures :D No, I think the issue with them is the fact that when they are being sold as juveniles, when they have no colour and they are dismiss by the buyers. Only when you encounter an experience fish keeper, that tell you...no, no, just wait till they grow...they are given a chance. There are also those that go...I've tried to keep them, they died after two weeks...and they show their thanks, with lots of fish that bully them and strong curent. And after you teach them the proper conditions for Pearl Gourami, as in maybe, a fish that originate from swamps, is not a good idea to be put it on a "treadmill" (strong curent), and no bullies...they go, wow they are amazing and almost in their second year :D
I always love your tank size recommendations. Pearl gouramis are so beautiful! I have Frank the powder blue dwarf in a 20L so I'm okay for now. Gouramis are so personable and curious, and I love watching them using their feeler fins when they don't know they're being watched.
Thank you for this vid! I've been planning a 55g tank with harlequin rasboras, some kind of cory cats, and otos. I had pearl gouramis in my head as a good showpiece fish, and this video cinched it. :)
Such a nice video! Bought one recently as a centrepiece, great fish & very peaceful, doesnt bother my harlequins, platies, ottos, guppies, or rummy nose tetras. Corydoras & shrimp "beneath him" too LOL. Likes to hang out in a barrell and watch his watery world go by.
Great video, I've had 4 in my angelfish tank for several years, they are stunning in good lighting. I agree with larger tanks once they grow out. I've never kept the gold pearls, but now you have my interest when I find them. Again, great video as always, thank you for sharing with us.
Love this Gourami. I have just recently had a massive spawn of the three spot gouramis but I need to get some of these guys in the future. Thanks for sharing.
I am mostly into South American fish, particularly cichlids, but out of the Asian species I really really love are Pearl Gouramies. They are absolutely gorgeous fish with very interesting behaviors. My other asian favorite if the red tail shark. I have a group of 4 young pearl gouramies in my planted community tank and they are awesome fish!
I agree with you. They are stunning and one of my favorites. It surprises me that they aren’t more popular. Those I see in the lfs don’t sell. But maybe it’s because they don’t color up well in the crowded tanks.
I've wanted pearl gouramis for years, but before I got out of the hobby for a while my biggest tank was a 29. I don't enjoy watching big fish in a small tank. Their behavior is usually much more interesting when they have more space. Well, now I have two 55 gallon tanks! I got a trio of young females a few months ago and they're doing great. I'd love to add a similar sized male, but they seem to get bought too fast for me to find any. The girls are doing great and love picking biofilm off the frogbit roots. They get along just fine with my platys and tetras and completely ignore the corys and panda garra.
Got lucky at the LFS a found a pair of these to put in a 50 breeder, I'll be keeping an eye out for more to climb my number up to 6-8 . Very cool fish, I think they are a favorite of mine as well. One I'll definitly going to breed in the future.
I loved my Pearl Gourami that I had I in my 40G, but it was aggressive during feeding time and my Bolivian Rams who I had before I added the Gourami, ended up hiding so I decided to re-home the Gourami. Will try the Gourami in the future though. Great video, thank you Prime Time. .
Funny story. I have a tank with pearls and a bolivian. And at feeding its the opposite, my bolivian is a punk and my pearls scurry away haha. But only at feeding
I have my pearl gourami paired with a 3 spot gourami in a 55gallon. They both are 3+in long and get along just fine. They have plenty of hiding places. Was kinda worried at first about their color developing. Took awhile but think they are coming through nicely now.
Thanks for this video never realized how beautiful they are. I have a 40 gallon I'm wondering how many would be suitable for this size tank 2maybe? with a few smaller fish
So glad you did a profile on these! They are one of my dream fish. Do you think a single male in a 36 bowfront with small, peaceful schoolers is pushing it too much? I’ve seen how big they get and agree the Internet must have it wrong with recommendations of a 20.
I keep mine with Odessa barbs, Denison Barbs, and key hole cichlids. They do well with them. Like to know how they do with severums and electric blue acara and maybe even fire eels. Plan to put them into a 400 gallon plus if they can go with them.
I have 3 pearl gouramis in a planted 40g community tank, they’re about an inch and a half each. They’re constantly sparring and chasing each other, is this normal? They’re relatively new to the tank.
I didn't catch how many could go in a 40 gallon. I now have two 40 gallon community tanks so I could move one if they don't get along. Could I try 2 or 3?
i dont have a pearl gourami but i do have a decent size gold gourami in my 72 gallon with a some catfish and a few cichlids [ an electric blue acara and a jack dempsey
Opaline gourami dwarf gourami and pearl gourami. My opaline gourami was my favorite fish of all time but had to get rid of them because I only have a 20 gallon long he got too big
Loving the channel! You guys have so many aquariums, how do you keep track of them all? Pen and paper or is there an app you use that’d you’d recommend? Thanks again!
I've been in your channel for a while, all I can say is that your videos are very informative. That's why I'm going to ask a question for my 75 gallon tank. Which is do I still need a co2 supplement, even though I set up an air pump with filter? Or am I going to choose between this two?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you very much, I'm sorry if it was a obvious question, I'm kind of new to this😅. But one more question, how many liters of aqua soil for 75 gallons that will fill up 2-3 inch layer of my bottom aquarium?
Thanks for another great video! What would you recommend for a male to female ratio? I have a 75 gallon with embers, rummynoses, and Pygmy cories, and cherry shrimp. I’m hoping to add 4-6 pearls. Thanks!
Hey Jason love all your videos! I was wondering what would be the minimum size tank for a single centre piece pearl gourami? Would be really helpful to know what you think! Thank you for all the content!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for getting back to me much appreciated 😁 ahhh ok! Bigger tank then Ive got space for at the moment! What sort of centre piece fishes in very hard water dGH 15+ in a 15 to 20 gallon would you recommend? I’m struggling to find one any help would be great! Thanks again
Nice tank, Great channel. I notice that a couple of your gouramis have a bit of a white spot(not ick) in the middle of the surface of their eye. I have four 3 year old pearls and both the females have these spots. I though ick at first and treated to no effect. I then tried anti fungal treatment to no effect. No other fish in the tank affected and all fish appear healthy. Any idea what these spots could be. Cheers.
Pearl gourami are one of the few fish remaining on the bucket list. Do you think their mouths get big enough to eat CPDs? I bet large groups of pearl gouramis and CPDs in a larger tank (
Jason or Joanna, I just picked up a 40 long. And want a group of I think 5 pearl gourami, 7 smudge spot Cory's and some kind of schooling fish. Was thinking cherry barbs, neon tetras, black phantom tetra, or von rio tetra. I only want 1 species of schooling fish. Any suggestions, or any of the ones I'm thinking of that would not work?
40 for sure. They need the room to turn around. I had mine in a 40 with a built in sump, but had to remove it to my 120, because the sump took out too much of her rotational swimming ability. They love leisurely coasting for long periods of time, and yeah the sump killed that option.
Jason, this video is very relevant for me. I recently started up my 75 gallon tank. I have 2 female pearl gouramis quarantining with a random female Molly. My extended plan for this tank is one geophagus topajos, one electric blue acara, one angelfish and at some point a small group of schooling fish. Question: how many pearl gouramis can fit in this tank in your opinion? The geophagus is quarantining in a different tank currently and is about 1&1/2" long:) Thank you in advance for your thoughts:)
I want to ask, are shrimp safe if they are in the same tank as pearl gourami? and are Mutiara gourami safe if you only keep 1 or 3 in an aquarium measuring 60x30x30 cm?

I have my pearl gourami paired with a 3 spot gourami in a 55gallon. They both are 3+in long and get along just fine. They have plenty of hiding places. Was kinda worried at first about their color developing. Took awhile but think they are coming through nicely now.
My peral gourami died today. Now it's just the 3 spot gourami. It's 4+in long. I feel it's just a matter of time before it dies too 😢
Fish Look Great, Special Mention To The Gold Pearl Gouramis.
Thanks for this video never realized how beautiful they are. I have a 40 gallon I'm wondering how many would be suitable for this size tank 2maybe? with a few smaller fish
i have a dwarf and a blue with 4 of them in a 55 gallon for 8 months and they have been fine
So glad you did a profile on these! They are one of my dream fish. Do you think a single male in a 36 bowfront with small, peaceful schoolers is pushing it too much? I’ve seen how big they get and agree the Internet must have it wrong with recommendations of a 20.
That would be cool!
Great fish! I have 3 of them. They actually get along. I’ve had other blue, gold and they will kill each other
Jason , HAPPY FRIDAY !
Didn’t know you could get a gold variant of the Pearl Gourami, pretty cool but still prefer the standard one.
The golds have really grown on me!
I keep mine with Odessa barbs, Denison Barbs, and key hole cichlids. They do well with them. Like to know how they do with severums and electric blue acara and maybe even fire eels. Plan to put them into a 400 gallon plus if they can go with them.
My next tank (hoping a 125) will have Pearls as my centerpiece.
I have 3 pearl gouramis in a planted 40g community tank, they’re about an inch and a half each. They’re constantly sparring and chasing each other, is this normal? They’re relatively new to the tank.
It can happen.
New guys can do that. But the more plants the better. Also male/female ratio?
I didn't catch how many could go in a 40 gallon. I now have two 40 gallon community tanks so I could move one if they don't get along. Could I try 2 or 3?
Ya - you could probably 4 or 5
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you! ❤
i dont have a pearl gourami but i do have a decent size gold gourami in my 72 gallon with a some catfish and a few cichlids [ an electric blue acara and a jack dempsey
Happy Friday
Opaline gourami dwarf gourami and pearl gourami. My opaline gourami was my favorite fish of all time but had to get rid of them because I only have a 20 gallon long he got too big
Loving the channel! You guys have so many aquariums, how do you keep track of them all? Pen and paper or is there an app you use that’d you’d recommend? Thanks again!
It's all in my brain. Haha
I’m amazed that I’m seeing cherry barbs in that tank with those decent sized cichlids
The heckelii is still pretty small. My guess is it will be a couple years before he’s big enough to think about them as a snack.
Awesome video
Wonderful video thank you! In your opinion can pearl gourami live singly in a community tank?
Definitely!
I've been in your channel for a while, all I can say is that your videos are very informative. That's why I'm going to ask a question for my 75 gallon tank. Which is do I still need a co2 supplement, even though I set up an air pump with filter? Or am I going to choose between this two?
You don’t need a CO2 supplement. Thank you!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you very much, I'm sorry if it was a obvious question, I'm kind of new to this😅. But one more question, how many liters of aqua soil for 75 gallons that will fill up 2-3 inch layer of my bottom aquarium?
Nice I like te fish
Hi and thanks for the video, can you keep pearl gouramis with honey gouramis ?
That might work?
Thanks for another great video! What would you recommend for a male to female ratio? I have a 75 gallon with embers, rummynoses, and Pygmy cories, and cherry shrimp. I’m hoping to add 4-6 pearls. Thanks!
Thank you! I haven’t found it to matter (the ratio) with this species when kept in a large group.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for replying, appreciate the help.
Hey Jason love all your videos! I was wondering what would be the minimum size tank for a single centre piece pearl gourami? Would be really helpful to know what you think! Thank you for all the content!
I would prefer a 40 breeder or larger.
It seems to me the dwarf gourami and the programmi really enjoy sand substrate
I had one in my 40 breeder and it was perfect. I hope to have another one some day!
Ive been wanting a couple of these to put in my 75 community tank. Just lost my dwarf Gourami to disease. 😢
This is a great choice!
I love the colors of the Pearls... you think they would do well with Electric Blue Acara in a 55g?
I think so. That’s a combo I wouldn’t hesitate trying
1 pearl gorami and a tetra community in a 55gallon thoughts?
wait they have GOLD variants?? i might consider them now
Yes! They are so cool!
Do you think a Pearl Gourami would fit well with Pearl Danios?
That could work!
Cheers.
It often goes away on its own with good water quality. Sometimes it’s there for life.
Pearl gourami are one of the few fish remaining on the bucket list. Do you think their mouths get big enough to eat CPDs? I bet large groups of pearl gouramis and CPDs in a larger tank (
If the CPDs are full grown maybe not? Tough to say for sure though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Probably not right to try it even if it's close 😂 But man it would look cool!
Love it!!! Where can you find the gold pearls? I googled and there were zero results lol
I haven’t seen them around much.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok thanks mate!!!
All would work just fine! Black Phantoms are insane!
Can you keep one in a 20 gallon with Tetras and a Cory ? ?
I like to keep mine in at least a 29 gallon because of their adult size.
They are for the most part friendly but my last one was beating up my diamond tetras and Congo tetras so I had to get rid of it .
It might have done better if you got a few more. Some of them don't do well alone.
@@Papa-in-Tx I even tried that years ago and the dominate one would kill the others and this was in a 55-gallon tank .
Really neat fish! How do you think one of these would work in my grow out tank with my breeding colony of mystery snails and super red fry?
Full grown I might be concerned about the super red fry given how tiny they are at first.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I was wondering about that that’s why I asked. Thank you for a honest answer!
40 for sure. They need the room to turn around. I had mine in a 40 with a built in sump, but had to remove it to my 120, because the sump took out too much of her rotational swimming ability. They love leisurely coasting for long periods of time, and yeah the sump killed that option.
Cause the sump took 4 inches from the width of the tank, for those wondering why.
My Pearl gouramis are about two and a half inches long how long will it get for them to be full grown around 5 or 6 in ?
Maybe 1-1.5 years?
At 1:10 what's that at the bottom? Looks kinda like a geophagus
Acarichthys heckelii
Jason, this video is very relevant for me. I recently started up my 75 gallon tank. I have 2 female pearl gouramis quarantining with a random female Molly. My extended plan for this tank is one geophagus topajos, one electric blue acara, one angelfish and at some point a small group of schooling fish. Question: how many pearl gouramis can fit in this tank in your opinion? The geophagus is quarantining in a different tank currently and is about 1&1/2" long:)
Thank you in advance for your thoughts:)
3-4 seems reasonable. Have fun!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you, that's good news:)
I want to ask, are shrimp safe if they are in the same tank as pearl gourami?
and are Mutiara gourami safe if you only keep 1 or 3 in an aquarium measuring 60x30x30 cm?
Shrimp will most likely be eaten. You should be able to keep multi pearl gouramis together though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics okay, thank you very much for the advice🙌
Greetings from Indonesian aquascaper🤙
could i keep 3 honey gouramis with 1 (or more) pearl gourami?
Possibly - neither are aggressive.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Will it affect the pearl gourami's behaviour if i keep it by its own? (as in no other pearl gouramis)
Did you do it? I’d really like to know, I’m also interested in pearls but I won’t do it if it’s no good with my honeys
