This movie came out when I was 9 and I had no idea what emerald was having them deliver. Now that I'm older I kind have a clue. It's obviously an underground donut and pastry market, which would explain why El got jumped (they wanted to get sugar high) and why emerald is so fat.
My second choice was drugs, it's unlikely.
