- Welcome to Hardware That Wasn’t There! A new series inspired by “When Phones Were Fun” by tech RUclipsr Michael Fisher AKA Mr Mobile; where we explore hardware from consoles, to handhelds in the video game world that may have either flopped in the market, or was completely misunderstood.
On today’s episode, I go back to Sony’s last entry into the dedicated handheld market; the PlayStation Vita. A portable that packed a punch with features that should’ve set it up to lead the way into the future of gaming…yet ultimately failed to do so. We discuss features, games, and my personal thoughts on both the handheld as well as its untimely demise.

Proud to say I’ve had my first vita since 2012. It’s been a long rough road but I’m glad to see people have come to appreciate its greatness overtime 🙏🏼
I bought the blue psvita 1000 from Japan. I regret not getting one sooner, and I still have my original psp.
I bought a ps vita last year to catch up on the entire psp and ps vita library
It is a uk special edition with call of duty declassified logo on the back of a regular black oled vita
Ooooh very nice, I’m a sucker for special edition handhelds lol
It's quite interesting to hear your opinion about jak and daxter collection since the vita community hates the port since it's can get below 10 fps in some parts of the game
I didn’t notice the dips too much but I also haven’t gotten far into Jak 2 or 3, which is where I can imagine the fps dips to happen. For me, I’m just amazed that they even got it to run!
I wonder if a modified port of the PS2 version would run better? Midnight Club 3 for PSP has been running super smooth on it with only small features like damage removed, and I think the weather too.
Yeah the fps dips are mostly common in jak 2 and jak 3. You can also overclock your vita to make jak 2 and jak 3 more playable though
This is also the sign that sony didn't care about the vita anymore. Just look at god of war collection, ratchet and clank collection, and sly cooper collection released prior. They all run smooth. Anyway i'll sub to your channel
Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to look into that! Thanks for the sub too, more videos to come!
@@games_n_gears jak 1 is actually capped at 20fps for some reason so while it has a consistent frame rate it was always so much choppier than every other version. If you mod your vita you can change the cap to 30fps and it runs perfectly, it’s kinda crazy
Thankfully the homebrew community has made this the go to retro console. It just does everything. Even now we get unofficial ports like cuphead and the gta series. I hope the next portable is a console not just a mini pc like most of the portable handhelds out right now. We need that sony psp quality again.
I couldn’t have said it better myself! Being more than a mini PC or a streaming device also gives it personality too which is definitely something missing in the market today
Im glad the indies kept it alive for as long as it did
Pre-ordered the launch Vita that I still have and as of a week ago it's modded and I still love it.
Another reason Sony claimed contributed to the Vita's failure was the boom of smartphone gaming that happened at around the time of the Vita's launch. While I think it did factor in somewhat, I can't see it being as big of a factor as Sony estimated. Not everyone wants to game without proper controls.
I think that definitely added to the woes it faced. Today, the Switches joy cons are definitely better than the Vita’s, but they’re still not 100%. I think for most people though they can look passed them because they have a ton of options to switch joy cons, and even use a full controller.
No such thing for the Vita unfortunately! I’d love to see an upgraded joystick mod for it if possible.
I resist a Vita the past 12 years. It takes a Japan trip to finally buy one, a preowned Vita 1000 right at Akihabara Tokyo, one great piece of Japanese device to bring home. Essential for my trophy hunting in my famous PSN haha.
PS Vita should have had some big franchise games like a Devil may cry game, a tekken, a dragon quest (not builders or heroes), street fighter 4, western monster Hunter,...
You deserve more subs, your videos are so great! i absolutely love my Vita as well
While it might no have a huge library of games like the 3DS, is enough for my tastes
Thank you so much! Working hard to keep growing!
I still use my PSV1000 that i bought in 2012.
There is a pretty big modding scene for the Vita. A modded Vita can play pretty much every PS1, PSP and PSV game natively and nowadays allot of pc/android games are still getting ported to Vita. Ports like GTA 3/VC/SA, Bully, Max Payne etc all running on the Vita.
That awesome to hear! A year I made the video, I modded it and had mGBA on it but eventually reversed it. Then towards the end of making this video, I bought an SD2Vita card so I could try out MC3 and GT PSP on it so I remolded it again.
I might have to do a separate video going into it because it’s been a fun time!
0:48 Gizmondo maybe
Actually have 2. Honestly everybody sleept on the vita actually use more then my ps5
Same here! Especially now that I have it modded for PSP too!
Sony failed the ps vita. It's my favorite handheld of all time right alongside the psp. It's a jrpg machine and a modded one is the ultimate entertainment device. The fact that this came out in 2011 but has games with graphics similar to the switch that came out in 2017 is unreal. They shouldn't have given up on it.
I wholeheartedly agree! An updated Vita when the switch came out with more modern ARM silicon would’ve been absolutely amazing and would’ve been great completion for the switch!
huh, ive only herd bad thing about the jack and daxter trilogy on vita. specifically the framerate.
@@hgmd3284 the frame rate definitely suffers in later stages of the game. For me though, I went into it knowing that with the Vita being a handheld that there would be some trade-offs so I think that’s why I give it a bit more of a pass than others!
@@games_n_gears ah ok
please bro do separate video on homebrew community on vita yes sony meessed up but homebrew keeps supporting it and should be looked into great system that got fuck e d over by sony
It’s definitely on the list for the future based off of my experience of hacking it as well as all the great comments about the home brew community!
i hate the portal, because it shows that sony is too scared to make another "failiure".
I have that same mindset! It always worries me when a company doesn’t give it a full effort and then complains when it’s not a smashing success.
PS Portal is better 😂😂😂
I’ve tried my coworkers and while it’s definitely a cool piece of tech, having to rely on both your WiFi at home and the open networks available to you hurts it a lot. I would’ve been all over a Portal that had the ability to play PS4/3 games alongside the steaming to PS5, it could’ve been more of a switch competitor with that kind of software on it
@games_n_gears it takes a lot of tweaking to get better results and nat type 3 is a no go for portal. It must be nat type 2 and this is a low risk effort to test the waters to see if sony will make a portable beyond the portal.
Why do you want sony to spend dev's resources towards a different SKU when they will sabotage their consoles. That's why the vita failed. Sony is just playing it smart.
@@EnaTenkiyoGamer I’d love to see them make a full handheld because I think a lot of users would definitely buy it. It would be tough from a cost perspective to make and sell a “PS5” Portable which is why I think a device that focused on playing previous gen games would be best.
The Portal makes more business sense since it’s a more cost effective solution to manufacture than a full on portable console. But I based on all the portable PCs coming out I think there’s a market case for it!
By the way, thanks for watching and discussing!
@@games_n_gears np! :)
No way is it better a streaming device will never be better than dedicated hardware. Portal a instant skip for me while i have a PSP and PSV. A new true PS handheld would be a instant buy.
