I did an overlay and it lasted 20 years without a leak. Then I had the roof stripped and ice and water shield added and it only lasted 17 years. The key is to not shingle over garbage.
The pencil analogy is kind of a poor analogy. It really doesn't really make any sense. I would try to find a better analogy.
Seems like you're just slow 🤣
If you are to break a pencil in half... Thats now 2 small pencils...
If you get 2 pencils instead of breaking one to make two.. You get tons more use out of said pencils.
Meaning If you resheet a roof, it doesnt make it last longer... Its still an old roof.
Agreed. I felt like a dumber person for even just having heard that.
I've watched a few of your videos and have not commented before but I have to on this one. In videos past, I've picked up on things that you don't do right but this one takes the cake. When you do a re-roof or shingle over, (not recovery or whatever you called it...) you should always remove three, or four if necessary, rows of tabs so your starter shingle and first shingle lay flat. Then, as soon as you reach the fifth or sixth row of existing 3-tabs, you "bump and run" the rest of the roof so it doesn't look all wavy like most shingle overs do, including this one in the video. Also, save yourself some work and install aluminum or steel C-Channel to the rakes over the old drip edge. Makes zero sense to do all the work you did with the existing drip edge and trimming new down to re install under the old shingles. With the C-Channel, the roof has a nice clean look at the rake and not a piled up mess like this one.
It’s amazing how many people post videos of them doing it wrong.
call your channel what you like I still enjoy it . from montreal quebec
I appreciate that
Yes, totally nest your starter all the way. Even if you have to cut part of the 2nd shingle. When you end up with two layer but four shingles on the starter row the water starts to pond in that area and cause the plywood on the overhang to rot.
I always cut the third course back so you don't get the go over hump
Hey r channel is the best. Your one of the best roofing teachers.
thanks i try to break it down! i could definitely work on these videos a little more and plan them out better for you guys. learning slowly lol
Actually this is wrong @treehouseco
Thank you for the videos bro. Very very helpful. Sending love from Hawaii bro . ALOHA
aloha. thank you for watching!
Need to do this because isurance wont insure a house with a detached garage we plan of demolishing in a year. Thanks for the tip.
I like it when I learn something.. Where you been man haven't seen any new videos in awhile?
was going to take a mini retirement for a bit. let the channel grow into its full potential before i come back because its underrated. but whatever. just here to share.
ive torn off plenty of 2 or 3 layer jobs.problem i always think about is wind and weight of extra material and throw in snow in most states
right that's a lot of weight.
@@NWIVeteranConstruction iv ripped 5 layers 4 of shingles and 1 cedar shake
the cedar was the second layer lol
What is with the snow. I've been a helper for 2 years switching to roofer and your videos are very informative. Thanks
this is an old video. just never got around to posting. i'm glad these videos help!
That's a strange analogy the pencils I like to use the analogy fits your materials don't just throw them out keep them on your roof have two layers it really helped join wins go arms and when flying debris hit your roof and I haven't seen it yet prevent leaks only having one layer shingles
Can u do a video on how to weave a valley ?
How to keep it straight
Zach, I never see you change a knife blade. Do you use something special that stays sharp forever or what? Basically I’m saying you make cutting super easy even when it appears cold.
Husky hook blades from home depot. You can get a 100 pack for $20 or 75 pack for $15. Not only are they basically the longest lasting blades I've ever used... they're about the cheapest too. And Some say, rather than pulling straight back when cutting, you can angle the knife slightly left or right and it supposedly will keep the blade sharper longer. Unnecessary in my opinion.
The materials are asphalt and rocks, and fiberglass..pull hard and a dull blade works fine
when you install regular ridge cap how many nails do you use per piece?
2 usually.
Glad to see the good nail placement on the starter!!
yea yea lol thanks.
What is your thoughts on installing metal roof on old singles with out removing them? Thank you
I do about 10 metal roofs per year, usually over shingles. I've never had any problem with running metal directly on top of old shingles, as long as they are fairly flat. Even spoke to the manufacturer, it doesn't void the warranty on the metal
At least put down some felt over the old. the aggregate from the shingles will wear on the steel
truthfully that's not my area of expertise! i don't talk about things i don't know about lol but i do know they go right over the old shingles a lot.
@@wadefrederick7851 The manufacturer doesn't specifically recommend putting felt over the old shingles. We sometimes do though, especially if the roof is old or has been leaking
Acts as sound barrier your okay
Did a 5 layer tray off last summer for my mom it still had the original cedar shake shingles from over 100 years ago
those are the worst! red white and green shingles on top of shake most times. sometimes the grey
We did one last month 3 layers on top of cedar shake they always make such a mess
Jesus Christ, shake tear off is the worst ! Then you have to do plywood. Dont do many of em here in Cali and I'm not complaining. Lol
Where are you? North Pole? Snows been gone for months here in canada
I don't know if I missed it but is it a lot cheaper to Overlay
I live in southern California and am getting roofing estimates as we speak. The overlay seems to be about $3K less than a re-roof for my house. So about $13K instead of $16K.
The only bad thing about putting metal over shingles is if you ever have a leak it's a pain to find where its coming from.
If you can't talk the home owner to tear off the old, then walk away.
Only rookies would leave the old shingles.
I'm going to assume you're not a business owner...
Ahhh! 6:23 LOL, don't do that with the camera. It fucks with me. I'm following you like I'm on the roof...then you do that and it genuinely feels like I've just lost my balance at the edge of the roof there lol
Where you located?
I share your dislike of shingling over an existing roof. As you pointed out, the new shingles will probably only last 75% of the warranty period and you’re making the next tear off twice as hard. In my area, a roof that really needs to be replaced often has a whole bunch of shingles that have curled, and all those tabs have to be trimmed off, so you don’t save nearly as much on the prep work as you plan on.
The first roof over I worked on was a rental property that my boss owned. It was so bad that his brother and I were afraid to swing our hammers too hard because we might punch right through the sheathing.
The next time I worked on a roof over, it was for an engineer friend of that same boss. He had done some research and made a jig for us so we could cut the starter strips to about 5”. Then we cut two inches off the first course of shingles so the top of every row followed the butts of a row of the original roof. Came out much smoother than your typical roof-over.
Of yeah, and roof overs make no sense when you have parts of the roof that abut walls. Just too much work to keep the right spacing between the side wall cladding and the roof shingles.
sounds like ventilation issues! or organic shingles!
"Get them vents out boy"
"I'ma go back to my lil chicken bone in the corna" 🤔
RECOVER UP TO 3 times. Every one said grandpas roof was rotten.. Shingles missing in some spots. It was dry as bone, 4 layers.
Absolutely not lmao. Do you know why the shingles are missing? Because there's no nails that go in a roofing gun long enough to penetrate the shingle, and 2 layers after it and then wood. You're roof is basically unnailed.
Hey Bro.
I'm shure you have allot of different feed back in your RUclips channel.
I bin watching your channel for a long time. Since I started roofing.
I wanted to say thank you for everything you do. This is a great thing you got going on.
Our Job is Dandrouse and some times we have to face siriouse weather conditions fixing leaks in the rain on a metal roof 2 or 3 stories up
Or shingling in 110 degree weather.
Anyways. I allways tell my crew that one day will be looked at like the old iron workers who built sky scrapers in Manhattan for 5 cents an hour.
One day it will be mandatory for roofing company's to get there employees health care and hazard pay.
I'm ranting on but I admire you Bro. I started off at 10 dollars an hour years back picking up trash.
Being a foreman now and with the same company I scene manny faces come and go. I was taught how to roof by a older Mexican who preached the same thing I hear you swear by.

Is that snow in june
No lol that was months ago
I describe it to customers like this, "If you lay a rose over dogshit, guess what it still smells like, DOGSHIT!"
You guys don't run new underlayment on a recover out there? Everybody in California puts a layer of 30# down on a recover
California is much different I'm sure. I've never heard of that only seen it randomly. every roof I've ever tore off with 2 layers was shingle on shingle.
@@NWIVeteranConstruction It is always interesting to me what best practices are in different parts of the country.
Regardless of what part of the country you are in, logically, shingle on shingle makes no sense unless you are doing it for cosmetic purposes only. Another underlayment provides way more leak protection.
Are you using lomanco ridge roll or those trash 4 foot section ridge vents?
BTW you changed from WFS??? Lol
?????? Lomanco. Rolled ridge vent is garbage!!! Shingle vent II, Snow Country.... is what you should be using. Those 4ft sec are what the Pros use.
I feel like its putting new carpet over old carpet.
hahaha never thought of it that way! that's hilarious
Not trying to be the grammar police or anything like that lol but the title should be “re-covering” :) when I first read it I didn’t expect this is what you meant at all. I thought you were wording a rip or tear off differently. Just some feedback! Keep the amazing content coming.
Roofers are not the most literate people in the world.
how would laying another ice and water not make a difference its more of a barrier so the water doesn't come through so therefore it does make a difference just saying
Nobody gets a new roof until they have an issue..if you got issues you need to inspect the decking! People put metal over leaky roofs in my town everyday..makes no since to me
Insurance companies are raising rates just because of roof age, regardless if still good, so new roof is a must to save $ on insane rate hike or being dropped. Roof is in good condition, but architectural roof over is a solid choice sometime.
Wow man you did that recover almost completely wrong. Where are you guys located? I'm in Michigan, I could show how to do it the right way, and you d like it. It will make way more sense and faster too. Your not even but n running those rows. That entire deck is going to become wavy when those shingles get hot.
His layover looked pretty good. Shingles wont suddenly become "wavy" as you say, when it gets hot, if it's being roofed over architecture shingles than that's a possibility, but it's 3 tab. It's not going to raise the shingles enough to be noticeable from the ground. Get your facts straight.
The "right way" is to do a complete tear off. Can't say any other way is the "right way" when it comes to a lay over, if it's done based off this video.
First comment
first time you got the first comment too I believe
I've been roofing 15 years, sometimes you can't get the clients to come off the cash for Labor to tear off and dispose.
True
How much did you charge ?
Can't remember. Probably around 175- 200 per sq being that it's so small
I was wondering because Im just starting out. I was charging the customer $3,500 for 1700 sq ft. There was about 200 sq ft of tear off. Plus I had to replace two vent gaskets, ridge vent and I 2ft piece of siding.
Must be old video. Still got snow onthe ground
yea just finally getting around to it because somebody wants to think I don't know the basic rules.
Funny thing dimetrie had this vid up before zack "of all trades" did lmao
I see no need to cut off the edge tabs; this makes less roof. And I put down felt or felt equivalent as if I were doing a first roof; I think the roof will last longer that way. And BTW, I put a 3rd roof on my house in Minnesota, which was possible with a "hardship" permit. I think that with 3 roofs you have more insulation vs heat escape & less likelihood of leaking.
What are the nails going into? I know it ain't getting to the wood. Especially on the cap.
Three layers - What about the extra weight? Also snow load? What is the pitch of the roof and I hope it’s sixteen on center for the truss or rafters you have! That’s a big No-No here in NY…Hope it works for you! Good luck
All right bro no disrespect But this video sounded more professional and all the other ones trust me I don’t mean it in a bad way...You were on point hell yeah
Lol thanks
I've been trying to clean it up
4 layers...my roof had 4 layers, 2 cedar, 2 asphalt.
One time I took off 4 layers one half and the other 3 layers
This is going to sound thirsty af but I could listen to you talk about roofing all day haha :)
lmfao you're fine thanks! I've got hours for you to sift through
The ridge vent wouldn’t do squat either..
My biggest problem with a roof over is that it really blows for the next guy, I hate ripping off two layer roofs, we tore one off years ago, 12/12 with 3 layers of shingles, one layer of roll roof, and one layer of original cedar, thankfully it was small
yea I've done plenty of those shake jobs! they suck for sure.
Zack of All Trades did you change your channel name last night?
This is done all the time because the homeowners are cheap. We all do it and don’t say you walk away from easy money because I call bullshit. Everyone thinks there way is the best. What you did isn’t right or wrong. Is there a right way to install two layers??????????
You take comments off??? Pretty sure I was first to comment, now don't see it🤔
no i did not! i never delete comments. maybe its coming up weird. let me check spam
That pencil analogy doesn't make any sense lol
how much does ur bro make and what does he do ? couldent understand him lol
Nothing and nothing lol
@@NWIVeteranConstruction lmao
Dam dude you know Demtric is gonna rag on you for no underlayment But anyway back in the day when we used mainly 3tab we cut the bottom shingles and the third row and done a bump and run
hahah idc what that dude says! I've never torn off a 2 layer roof with any kind of felt in between layers. never
If you are going to put a 2nd layer on there is no point in putting underlayment on, I don't care what anyone says
Demitree actually had this vid before he posted dont fall for there gay love there working together
Not accurate...you can add a layer easily with it performing just as well or better than a single layer! I agree that many layers does have issues with nail retention, but otherwise just fine. New felt is not a good idea imo.
Zack should of changed his name too zack the hack
i dont understand the pencil analogy! and im a roofer! lol
lmfao i could've explained it better sorry. what i should of said is recovers is like buying another half pencil. you hardly get anymore lead. my bad hahaha
@@NWIVeteranConstruction ahhh ok. that makes sense. Thanks bro!
But how it’s the 2nd layer only a half pencil. They’re still new shingles? And if the exsisting roof wasn’t leaking that’s like and extra layer of protection in a way. I get it the right thing to do is tear off and redo but I don’t understand the hate for reroofs.
@@mjwhite7824 because it won't last as long as a new one. Therefore you're not getting a whole pencil. You're making a quick EASY buck. And the next guy is gonna have to charge extra and be miserable for the duration of that 2 layer tear off. Recovers only last about 10-15 years
Zack of All Trades all fair points I mean its that a forsure thing the that recover doesn’t last as long?
why did you change your name? 🤣
well worlds fastest shingler was just to get a point across and catch interest. I've been wanting to change it for awhile. changed it several times actually up until a year ago. but i think its funny how people assume i just know roofing. i'm a jack of all trades. i learn everything i can about any trade as it comes to me. so i thought it was a more fitting name so that people can go...woah let me see what other videos this dude has besides roofing. maybe i can learn something about framing or brake work.
Jack of all trades master of none
How hard is it to install vinyl gutters? Lol I'm currently working on a roof and the gutters had to go they was horrible. Do we went vinyl.
Man I’ve been skipping over this video all week because I didn’t recognize the user name. I finally clicked on it, and there was WFS’s mug! Glad I finally watched it.
Your analogy makes no sense! A solid 2 layer roof is that much more protection from the rain.
No, actually the layer of shingles underneath trap heat and create somewhat of whats called a "hot roof," causing the layer on top to be exposed to the heat from sun and heat from the bottom. This drastically shortens the shingle lifespan, fries the shingles on the bottom layer and gives the homeowner a big bill if they want their next roof to last. This homeowner possibly knew this but didn't care about the people who buy the home.
@@Aaron-fb1pq BS
@@liv2fish21 not BS at all, you ever wonder why most manufacturers don't offer warranties on multi-layers? It's because it shortens the shingle lifespan.
@@Aaron-fb1pq , manufacturers "always" supported two layers before stripping. Maybe some cheap products made today won't survive. Besides, the two layers aren't hotter. It's more mass so holds the heat longer and helps melt the winter snow.
@@Aaron-fb1pq , "hot roof" is a term invented to convince homeowners to pay for stripping off the old shingles. The extra mass stores heat longer, but it's not hotter.
I'm starting him a dimentri have some gay love going on, dimentri had this vid b4 it was ever posted omg you got 28k Dimitri omg zack has 26k dont believe there shit show worse than dr phil
I have a house with 5 LAYERS
Sure up ur rafters
Hopefully it's not too big, that's a big bill my friend I tore a 5 layer one time it was absolutely heinous
no real show how to install....
See my most recent 3 part series its a big hit for the installs. I didn't demonstrate the shingling part because it's the same as regular shingling after you take the important steps for the 2 layer and get the longer nails
Siding should never be tight to a roof surface like that - standard crappy N American construction details..
like the j channel? that's how its done over here lol you're right i guess
I wish the vinyl industry would come out with some type to removable water board trim to run along the roofline in order to access the step flashing easier.

Why the name change WTF?
Outgrowing the name. I'm going to incorporate more siding and windows doors metal and remodeling. Wfs did its job now its time to be an adult channel
Terrible analogy. If anything, you argued the point of 2 layers being better than one.
All it does is cover the problem...
very true!
We just did a forty square roof over
easy money but I just hate it. its such a bad move in my opinion
Just don’t be lazy and rip it
It's not him being "lazy". The homeowner wasn't paying for a complete tear off. That's literally the only reason why he wanted a lay over. If he goes out of his way to rip it off and pay for the dump fees, that's hundreds of dollars out of pocket for the dump and for labour. If the homeowner wanted to pay for it im sure as hell that he would've done it.
Stupid comment.
Cowboy roofing at its finest. Zero safety, because fuck that right? And all the prep work to go over? Takes 45 minutes for a couple decent laborers to rip and prep that.
Alright, so put on a rope on a 6/12, that's a 1 story. Now, if you happen to fall, you're going to hit the ground either way. Lanyards shock absorbers let you fall 3'+, now add in a person's height. Say 6'. Now that's 9feet between the 1 point on your roof lanyard and the ground. Not to mention all the ropes that are going to be laying there, tripping hazard. Plus it adds on time for setting it up. And having to deal with the ropes all day.
If you've been in roofing and have ever used a rope you know sure as hell that you should be keeping your anchor tight to you and not loose. That's what causes falls, people not tighting their ropes up close to them while working. I don't know 1 roofer who would rather put up with all of that for this 1 story roof, than not use a rope and make it so much easier. Safety is always a concern but no one's going to put themselves in a situation that they can't somewhat control.
45 x 3 people @ $20 an hour. Pretty much $60 spent there, then the dump fees. Add on another few hundred. That's coming out of his pocket because the homeowner wasn't paying for it in the first place.
Half the time you don’t know what you’re talking about... 20 years here. Sorry but stop posting crap.

Should NEVER do a recover!!! He is 100% correct about being against recovers. However your prepping the deck incorrectly for a recover. You want to cut back the 1st 2 1/2 courses back and on the 3rd course cut just above the tar line. Then cut the old starter back flush to the fascia and cut the rakes flush to the fascia. Then you install the drip over top the old shingles. Lay your starter and 1st course like normal, then the 2nd course butts up to the bottom of the 3rd course which begins your butt and run. This will give you a short row on the 1st row and if you cut the 1st 2 1/2 rows back properly you will have a nice smooth transition, and not those waves in the bottom few rows. Also if you do this the proper way you cannot tell that it was a recover except for the short row at the 1st course.
