Resident Evil Afterlife Movie Review - The Matrix: Decomposed

  • The 4th movie in the Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil film franchise, Resident Evil: Afterlife directly follows Resident Evil: Extinction... by cleaning up the sequel bait as fast as possible, and massively course correcting on that power creep that's been going on in the series so far.
    So it's practically a completely unrelated movie at this point, spare that it does follow the survivor's tale from Extinction. Sort of. The nature of the destination is warped to the point where details about it from the previous movie don't make sense anymore, but it's still... kinda there?

    Having Clair win the fight against the axe guy but only letting Alice finish him is the Resident Evil version of "You are on this council… but we do not grant you the rank of master."

      Fr it's so annoying. At least in the first Underworld they establish that Selene can get hurt & be vulnerable. Apocalypse: The Resident Evil 3 one
    Extinction: The Mad Max one
    Afterlife: The Prison Break one

    I could never understand the fascination with Mila Jovovich. Even when people were swooning over for the "Fifth Element" I was more like Meh. At the most I barely tolerated the first two RE movies, with each sequel I would constantly think to myself "Why is Mila still being picked to be in this movie?" Then I learned she was married to the director, and I was like "there it is", she's not being selected for the role of Alice because of her acting prowess (she lacks any) and is instead getting rolls especially in Paul W.S. snore fest because she is sleeping with him. Whenever I see a movie and the name Paul W.S. Anderson attached to it, I wonder if Mila Jovovich is attached to it and most likely the answer is yes. I'm guessing cronyism is acceptable if you are married to the people in charge...

    • @Khenfu_Cake
      @Khenfu_Cake Год назад +1

      To be fair I believe Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson met on the set of the first Resident Evil film. So she probably wasn't cast because of those two being married.
      But everything else you said about all the subsequent films and how Jovovich turns up in pretty much every movie Anderson makes now is spot on.
      Thank goodness his film adaptation of Monster Hunter was a flop otherwise we might have received another long and pointless movie franchise where the entire premise is Anderson trying to convince people his wife is sooo cooooool! 🙄

    • @Khenfu_Cake
      @Khenfu_Cake Год назад +2

      Also I do agree with the weird obsession with Jovovich. I like her well enough but she's really not that compelling a lead, especially in cheesy action flicks where charisma is an important trait for the lead actors in order to make the movie enjoyable.

Granted, hard to shoot a scene by the ocean and there NOT be water, but then you either choose a different scene or find a dried up lake bed. Ooo i waz nervous about this when i realised you would do the resident evils as its one of my favourite series of films (as messy as it gets sometimes 😂) but as always m8 another great review Decker, thank you my man.
    I don't comment often so i would like to say a massive thank you for being brave enough to actually show the exciting bits with the gore every so often and i understand how much it cost to do that , so thank you mate😊.
    Im afraid that i can't afford the £5 JOIN on here but i am happily a proud patreon member .
    One last thing your awesome buddy keep up the amazing work.😊

    The whole throwing away sequel bait thing, which is really annoying, is even weirder with this series since they were all written and most were directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

    This Resident Evil film is a doozy. Its the last one of the Paul Anderson films Ive seen. It starts out cool, with an army of psychic ninja clones fighting japanese soldiers...and then it switchs to something totally different. It becomes a combination of the Prison Break tv series, Resident Evil 5, and whatever else they could add in.
    Within the film it really makes no sense that the T-Virus Undead Zombies from the majority of the early games/films suddenly become the Las Plagas Parasite Zombies from specifically Resident 5.
    The Resident Evil Games didnt take long before they just started swapping different kinds of viruses. Resident Evil 4 dropped the zombie virus for a new parasite infection. That was great at the time, but then they also made the Ouroborous Virus in Resident Evil 5, C-Virus in Resident Evil 6, the Mold in Resident Evil 7, and with lots of other viruses in side games.

    in RE5, the "robot bug thing" is attached to the body of the person it control (Only Jill Valentine) and it's a painful long process (and fight) to remove. Here, you just wonder how that thing mind control the person he's onto.
    Also godamnnit Andreson, theses scenes in the Wesker fight at the end are straight up the RE5's cutscenes... At least that scene doesn't happen on a plane crashlanding into an active volcano.

    I never liked the "Captain Confederacy" they swithced out O'Mara with to play Wesker.
