    • @LooneyClipse

      cant deny nor agree, in many cases i find japanese va superior, but there are times when eng comes out on top. For varied reasons, but perhaps this time because i personally just find english voices be more "varied" . In game characters come from every corner of the world and different culture and have different characteristics due to their background. I just find english va more colourful in ff14. But it is true for attachment aswell. I may aswell as longtime weeb just be used to japanese vocals and not find them as interesting as hearing actual quality eng va, which at times can be rare.
      Either way what you say is very true, but can be not so much if people truly care(and most will be shallow or just care less) to explain their preferences.

      Honestly, yeah, that's how it checks out with me and my GF. We'd both switched to Japanese during ARR because of the bad voice directing for that part, but I switched over to English for HW, cuz I usually play when I'm working overnights doing work-from-home call center work and it's easier for me to listen with an earbud than try and stop to read every line of dialogue. I LOOOOVE Emet's English voice! It's SO GOOD! Honestly, I feel that way about oretty much EVERYONE from HW onward. But the GF didn't, and we were listening to the comparisons last night to see what we'd been experiencing differently, and she could not get used to the English voices AT ALL! XD Meanwhile, I don't think the Japanese is bad, but certain choices BOGGLE ME! Why does Urianger sound so HOT?!? He's supposed to ne an awkward dad! Emet's so much more SUBDUED! Why does Hythlodaeus sound like THAT?!?@?!?!? It made me laugh, how both of us were like "omg NO LOL WTF???" when listening to the other side of things. 😆

      @@hellsingmongrel I’m bilingual, I was raised in the US but my parents taught me both English and Japanese growing up. For Hythlodaeus, the Japanese voice acting made sense most to me because he was presented as a softer character who is very kind but likes to mess with Emet, who is much more hard headed and colder. In Japan, when the characters have a softer but witty personality, they usually sound more high pitched and soft, hence why he sounds like that in the Japanese VA. For me the English voice for him was too low and manly. Not saying he’s girly, but he gave me more of an elegant gentlemen vibe and his Japanese voice acting matched better for me as well as the lines he said compared to the English. But I understand to some people it sounds weird especially if you compare the obviously very different voices haha

    So, I feel like with a character like Emet... the only people who can really compare the voices, are those who are fluent in both languages and familiar with native speakers of both.
    As I am English and not fluent in Japanese, I can only talk for the English version. The charater, and his voice, is absolutely chok full of nuance and idocyncracies which I imagine are utterly lost on someone who is not a fluent English speaker, which is why I suspect when I listen to the Japanese dub, I'm probably missing alot of things they are doing with it. He sounds like a somewhat generic anime villian, where as the English voice, whilst definately a voice that sounds like its likely belonging to a villian, is very unique and different and gives you the idea that.. his not a simple as just a bad guy.

    FFXIV JP vs EN is a mixed bag. Some voices (like Emet-Selch) I like a lot more in English, but some others (like Alisaie, though I'm not the biggest fan of her Japanese voice either) dont quite fit in English
    Overall though, I'd have to say I prefer the English version overall because the VAs are for the most part relative unknowns (most of them are stage actors by trade) who do a really good job. Gives it more of a unique feel than hearing Japanese seiyuus who, although very good, Im too used to hearing every time I watch anime or play a VN with voice acting. Aside from a few Xenoblade VAs and Game of Thrones actors, it's mostly "fresh" voices in FFXIV, while every Japanese VA I've heard in a lot of other series already. I always like hearing relative unknowns, as long as they deliver (which the London cast largely does in FFXIV)

The only thing I like a bit more in JPN is Urianger's voice, tho i'm still quite satisfied with his eng voice actor. I honestly can't bear listening to JPN Alisaie no matter how much I try to warm up to a 'voice that fits a sixteen year-old' better, or so they say.
    I reaally love the direction they went with ENG Emet-Selch. The sardonic and melodramatic way he delivers his lines was a great undertone to how he truly felt about everything. Also given his lore of being a big fan of theatre, it really felt like he was giving the performance of his life.

      Most of the qualities that can be found in the english dub is in the performance of their lines. i give it to their VAs, they're talented.
      Regardless as a french player that prefers the japanese dub, i vastly prefer the JP VAs for the same reasons as you.
      I found the many liberties taken by the english localization to be extreme and even sometimes bad also by reintepreting dialogues or the characters's personalities, but the problems lies also in the randoms accents comming out of nowhere from my perspective... and that i found down right off-putting.
      The VAs also just doesn't seems to fit well with the faces of a lot of said characters, like Alisaie for exemple sounding like a middle-aged 30 years old woman, instead of a 13/16 years old teenager. It just feels inconsistent from a casting stand point.
      That being said, these are only my preferences and opinions. More power to anyone that found themselves more comfortable with the english dub, they still drives the points home of the characters, naratives and stories.

      @chrystalclear500 3 года назад +3

       @KougaMyazawa I'm obviously biased, but I think Hiroki Takahashi knocked it out of the park! In more recent years his voice profile type has switched from the softer or more stereotypical shounen characters that I originally found him for, like APH Japan and Joey/Jounouchi from Yugioh, to more mature and often self-serving/villainish characters.
      In the past couple years I know he's played (in no particular order):
      Ryu (more recent Street Fighter incarnations)
      Crimson Rubeus (Sailor Moon Crystal, secondary villain)
      Pariston Hill (the newer Hunter x Hunter, friendly on the outside and sneaky/manipulative underneath)
      Jo Sawashiro (antagonist from the Yakuza Online mobile game, & minorly in Yakuza 7)
      Date Masamune (Nioh DLC lord and boss fight)
      Katzelia (Granblue Fantasy, a fallen prince trying to start a war to regain his throne)
      Kukri (King of Fighters XIV, mysterious and callous newcomer to the series)
      Considering his range from his older roles and his lower voice type than the average in the industry, his newer voice archetype is super appropriate for a villain role like Emet-Selch that's theatrical, prideful, and deeply tragic. I don't think this clip does the range of the role's peaks and valleys enough justice to show that though, but any other clip would probably be spoilers to the highest degree. ^^;

There is a lot of nuance in the Japanese VA because all of them are quite skilled in their field, as it's a huge industry in Japan. Obviously they did a great job selecting most of the English VA for this game, which is rare for Japanese-developed titles, and Emet-Selch is by far the best, even comparable to some of the best Japanese VA out there. His performance is simply stunning in both languages and the direction must have been top notch.
