I just finished EW and I do agree it is a masterpiece! My expectations were low coming in because of how incredible shb was. But damn this xpac topped shb for me. Very emotional halfway through the story but enjoyed every moment of it. 10/10 for this xpac!
That was my experience, too! I really didn't think anything could top ShB... But now I see that ShB (as amazing as it was and still is) was just a setup for EW! :D
Shadowbringers and Endwalker are perfect companion pieces for the climax of this first arc of FF14. Very emotional, character writing is spectacular, and all the threads spun from previous expansions are woven together beautifully. I do genuinely believe that these are the best stories told in Final Fantasy in the past 15 years.
Thanks for sharing! I would go even further, as I personally think this is my favorite Final Fantasy story of all time. Never thought I'd say that about an MMO! :)
This review is spot on. I agree with it almost entirely. I just finished the MSQ Yesterday. I've been playing MMORP g's since 1995. I've never experienced anything that remotely approaches what FFXIV has done. Yeah the stories from 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 Range from Fairly average, to good, But I couldn't believe What I had seen when I came back to the game a few months ago and played through 5.0, and now 6.0. FF14 really is a different beast than other MMORPGs. It might even be It's different enough to warrant its own new genre. Other MMORPGs Are an online game 1st, and some of them with story elements. FF14 is a full flavor a full fledged final fantasy game 1st, The MMORPG was built around it. I never would have thought I would say that the story in an MMORPG ranked amongst the best I've ever seen in fiction, But here we are. And I can't believe this sprung from what was once 1.0. And not only that period look at what the game did for the Genre. The general was on life support and set to become an Odd relic that we would one day be reading about in gaming history, But FF14 hit it with verraise And then a few dual casted vercures (yeah, I'm a red mage). I've played so many M and RP g's period from the ridiculously bad, to Wednesday it's too once that I've held my attention for years. But FFXIV is something special, And I look forward to seeing where things will go now that This whole saga has been brought to an end. I look forward to exploring more of the world. Again, spot on review.
Thanks so much! Yes, FF14 is so unique because it has always had a commitment to story. They struggled for a long time to find the right balance (look at the ending to ARR for example, with its super awkward final dungeons full of long cutscenes) but once they found it, it's been a crazy ride. I know not everyone cares about the story but it's really what keeps me coming back to this game every time there's new content, even if I've been taking a break for a year or more.
I enjoyed the slow bits. It gave me room to explore, to think, and enjoy the buildup to the bigger events. I don't have a complaint to share with the expansion. I can understand some issues others may not care for but I can't say I share the sentiment. This expansion was an emotional one for me not just for the game's portrayal of events and the toll it has on characters but reflects my own struggles with grief and despair. It's a comfort that I needed ... when I can't really talk to others about my feelings. Voicing one's grief over a lost loved one can only be put up with but so much.
Thanks for sharing! This expansion was definitely therapy. From a critical perspective I see things that could have been better but as a player I honestly didn't have any complaints worth mentioning. Sorry to hear about your grief. I hope you find a way to forge ahead. ❤
I dont think I've ever touched a side quest after Heavensward for XP. Especially after they put the Blue+ symbol to denote what opened up air currents. Never needed to do them for XP because if you did your dailies + MSQ you were always ahead (as long as you had your xp item, food buff and FC buff up). Also the story didnt start slow...5.4 and 5.55 serve as Endwalker's prologue, you pretty much end 5.55 with the fact that you need to head to Sharylan. To those who were waiting for endwalker 6.0 seems slow, but those who are still heading to 6.0 it'd be on pace. Every good novel has a decent prologue that primes the reader for the story ahead, Endwalker is no different.
I never played any FF games because I was not into the JRPGs style and such, but FFXIV was nice. I can't say I've seen some incredible plots that I've never seen before or stuff, but I do indeed consider it one of those online games that are worth playing at least for the story (if you're patient).
I highly recommend FF14 both as an MMO and as a single player experience for the story! Playing it solo has its drawbacks, but if you like JRPGs, the story is well worth it! :)
I think the point most gamers misunderstand the long cutscenes where "nothing happens", is that the writters of FFXIV design them with the mind of a movie director. They doubled down on that type of presentation for you to bond with the characters. In my opinion, the idea here is the complete experience, not the ending. That said i totally understand all the people who doesnt like them, but keep in mind that in the final moments, you only have that emotional weigth because the building blocks were all put together in plain sight, during that cutscenes!
Thanks for sharing! I totally agree that the cutscenes are very important to the bonding experience - it's what makes the final conclusion (and all of the amazing steps along the way) so powerful. I should clarify that I don't think they should cut down on the cutscenes or remove them in general. Rather, my feeling is that some of them could be a bit more "economical" in the writing, and that some of them (but no means all) could be replaced with some kind of interactive content to make the pacing better and the experience even more powerful. :)
I had the "fun" of the server queues with the added stress of my ISP having daily meltdowns when Endwalker came out. Most of my DCs were because Virgin Media doesn't know how to run a service that doesn't go offline or lag every 5 seconds.
16:57 "Trying to remember how to play while the music does 100,000 damage". I say the first time you do a dungeon in Endwalker is likely the hardest difficulty you're gonna play.
Great review! I'll just say one thing in regards to the story: If you didn't cry when you walked to the end of everything, you simply do not have a soul. :3
I don't recall there being an issue with finding xp to keep up with story, iiirc most people qlways have the opposite problem where the MSQ actually gives enough to cap a job and a half-ish
It was mostly a problem in the early expansions and especially 2.0. It’s gotten a lot better lately but I still ran into it in ShB where I had to pause MSQ multiple times to run dungeons because I couldn’t meet the MSQ level requirement 😂 Thankfully they’ve fixed that stuff now!
You can Final Fantasy 14 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Most of the main story content in the game can be played solo, but some dungeons and trials must be played in a group to progress the story. However, it's easy to find a group even if you have no friends who play the game, since there's a "Duty Finder" which automatically matches you with others who need to do the same dungeon/trial. FF14 is definitely an overall better experience with friends but for the main story content, I generally prefer to do it solo. That said, if you do start playing FF14, you'll easily make friends within the game if you want to. :) Hope that helps!

unbelievable masterpiece? LOL right. all expansions are are reskins of the previous version.... same old stuff every time. MMORPG's are just stale after playing them for almost 20 years... FF XIV is basically a MMORPG that requires you to pay to talk to NPC's and watch cutscenes 90% of the time.... no thanks. And you're out of your freaking mind if you are wasting hours just to log in to the game. Square failed massively at server management. You couldn't even PAY ME enough to wait in a queue for that long. No way.
This is a take so devoid of intelligence that my head hurts reading. Expansions just follow same structure for its content, that's it. And by that logic, every RPG is a reskin because all you do is talk/kill/fetch for NPCs for hundreds of hours. And you don't "watch cutscenes 90% of the time". Apparently 200 hours of story in a game where I have 3k hours is me spending 90% of my time watching cutscenes. Even if you strictly talk about story, that's one dumbass exaggeration. Next, people can spend hours on something they spent money on and like. Don't project your problems into other people.
I completely disagree. I found this expansion to be one of the worse stories I have EVER experienced in any MMORPG plus some of the most boring and worse mechanics I have ever done. What is this? Early 2000s again? From insanely bad quest mechanics, like the escort quests/hide n stalk/follow me quests you pointed out, to the unrealistic story moments had me cringing 95% of the time I played the MSQ. I literally can't believe you find good in those quest mechanics. They were not at all engaging and felt like such a chore to do. I play games to have fun, not sit here and feel miserable that I need to do this. Man I could go on. I need to make a video on how bad I thought this game is.
Fair enough! I gotta say though, I'm surprised you made it all the way to Endwalker if you feel that way. Did you have more fun with the previous expansions?
