Making a rocket that can launch around corners... Kerbal Space Program!

  • In this KSP episode I finally have some mods installed and try my first mission to another planet, Uranus... Which leads to me building the tallest rocket in kerbal space program before ending up creating some sort of feminine protest rocket. Jeb then has the a very very long flight, knowing that he will be safe thanks to what I learned in my previous kerbal video- building the world's safest rocket!

A couple things about SAS: it’s very useful for targeting and maneuvers. The 3 middle options (that end with “grade”) are like the xyz axes for your movement, left side is positive and right side is negative. The top options are stability and maneuver. The bottom ones are target, which points you to your target, and antitarget, which points you away from it. The second option on the right side is useful for slowing down into the nearest celestial object because it just tries to stop you.

A few tips for you from a rocket science enthusiast who will hopefully have a NASA internship soon:
    1. Always launch with the rotation of the planet. Since the earth is rotating to the east, launch in that direction to be more efficient. When you try to leave Earth, launch in the same direction it is orbiting the sun as well. *Unless you want to reach inner planets such as Venus and Mercury
    2. Use mods and downloadable tools like transfer window planner. Every planet in the system travels at a different speed and distance from the sun, so it's nearly impossible to get to other planets without waiting for the correct "transfer window". In the case of Earth and Mars, this occurs once every 26 months, when Mars is 45 degrees ahead of Earth in its orbit.
    3. Add more reaction wheels. It makes steering far easier.
    4. Add more stages. Your current designs force you to carry a lot of empty tanks around, but real rockets always try to dump unnecessary weight (or just not bring any extra weight to begin with)
    Godspeed!

  • @DreadKyller
    @DreadKyller 3 года назад +1

When you make Maneuvers, you have to aim them ahead of where the planets currently are. In fact the UI for the maneuver will actually show you if you will intersect with another planet/moon and how it will affect your trajectory.

Go to the settings in the main menu and activate "advanced tweakables"
With this activated you can make autostruts which are a bit glitchy but it stabilizes your rocket.
Another tipp is that if you build rockets that look somewhat realistic, they will fly ways better.
With a somewhat realistic looking rocket, your goal is to
    point 45° @ 10 km high. (With a bigger rocket you turn slower.) That's what's called a gravity-turn.
Do your gravity-turn right towards the 90° mark on the nav-ball to launch into a orbit wich is pretty good aligned with all the planets and moons.
DON'T USE MODS THAT MAKE YOUR GAME HARDER.

    Ima insert some explanations here
The way the part attachment works is that the parts attach in 2 ways: radial (on the side of the part), or the nodes/points marked by the checkered green spheres. By aligning those spheres, you're attaching it using that way. If you hover your mouse cursor (with a part that supports radial attachment) over another part, it'll attach radially, like with the boosters, and that accidental rocket snowflake that explodes.
SAS has problems keeping the ship from wobbling because it's viewing the orientation from the cockpit. When the ship is bending, it only sees the direction at the end, not the average (middle), so it overcorrects, and makes the oscillation worse. This is why most of us put the controlling part (for BIG rockets) in the middle.
The reason the camera was trying to keep all of the parts with the rings in view was because the game still registered those rings as 'attached'.
Also, those bars are overheat. More full is hotter. Once they go past their full mark, they explode, because you've pushed them past their temperature limit.
Try using RCS blocks to control the ship's direction if you're not using engine gimbals (or they're not there, like in some boosters).

I want to tell you about an important thing in ksp. Delta-V. You probably know what it is already. Here it basically determines how far your rocket can go. Delta-V is that number of m/s below staging and below each engine stage. The one below staging is your total delta-v. The one below each stage is the delta v of each stage.
Every maneuver also has a delta-v - it's how much delta-v it costs.
Delta v depends on conditions. Hover over a special icon in the lower-left part of the VAB/SPH. There you will have 3 buttons: sea level, altitude and vacuum. You can also choose the celestlial body. It will display your delta-v in set conditions.

Those ten circles to the left of the navigation, they show up when you turn on reaction control(SAS), you choose one, and it will try its best to point the rocket in that specific direction.

Tip: you can hold alt to make things only attach on the green nodes, for example to make the nose cones attach properly, and you can hold shift to make the whole rocket move clicking on any old part.

Few tips: first off click on the orange box under your staging, your twr must be bigger then 1 on your main stage, otherwise you cannot take off, as well more parachutes = more weight, and because they are more effective at high speed there is a limit, also press alt-f12 for CHEATS

For anyone else having issues understanding the directional symbols:
Just spend some time fiddling with the maneuver nodes, once your out in space (easiest after achieving a stable orbit.
Maybe use cheats to enable unlimited fuel. Just spend some time getting to know which symbol has what effect on the orbit and how changing multiple will affect it.
Don't worry too much about what they're called. You should pretty quickly get a good grip on the mechanics.

A practice I’ve adopted recently with lengthy crafts and strut limitations is to make a pyramid out of the Cubic Octagonal Struts or Modular Girder Segments along the height of it.
Let’s say the craft is 15 Structural Fuselage’s tall, and the limit of the struts are 3 sections. So you would have 5 sets of radially attached octagonal struts, top with 1, bottom with 5, and then strut between them, retaining a rigidity along the whole height of the vessel. I hope it helps, you can never have enough struts 👍🏽
