  • As an engineer I never thought biology would be inspiring my builds, but here we are, sending DNA into space in Kerbal Space Program (KSP). Even though it could have been more successful, I was quite pleased with how this turned out- plus I beat my Simon in space record of building the longest rocket in ksp. Don't forget the strongest rocket shape ever created too, it actually got to space!

  • @arader17
    @arader17 3 года назад +29

    Matt, have you thought about using the launch supports? I forget what they're called, but they hold your rocket upright so you have time to throttle up and ignite your engines. Then you can release them for liftoff.

    You should probably learn a more efficient trajectory to get to orbit for when you build normal rockets. For example, your strongest shape probably could have made it to orbit, but you spent most of the energy going up.
    Also, try using "launch clamps" at the top of your snake or DNA. That should hold it in place before launch.

    I think what you should do for the future is make a snake that has pretty much all its lift and thrust in the front section. Let the back have smaller thrusters to lift their own weight, but mostly be for storing a substantial amount of fuel.
    Put massive thrusters in the front area, make sure to have separate thrusters for controlling roll and direction. Let the rest just move around behind it like a super long tail. Having most of the thrust in the front will pull the tail along and ensure that it doesn't twist around and knot, decreasing the chance of it breaking.
    If you set up the front as a sort-of detachable command section, and set the whole thing up so it burns fuel from the furthest tanks first, moving forward, then you could possibly even land the front section on a planet. And with all the surplus fuel you'd have from the huge tail, once you get into space, I can't imagine that there are many planets that'd be out of reach.

  • @YOLOnline
    @YOLOnline 2 года назад

    I feel like the main issue with your long rockets is the fact that they use the same engines over the entire length, that way the tail can whip around and snake as much as it does as it's not really pushing its energy straight into the rest of the rocket since it wiggles. I think if you were to have bigger rockets with more thrust at the top and gradually go down in size / thrust, the upper part will drag the lower part up resulting in it straightening out more. Would love to see you try that approach and see how it goes :)

    Something to know is that you should do science mode which is slower but you learn to play. Decouples are manually added and if you do the smallest parachute on top of the mk1 command pod and a heat shield under it you can land sadly, adding side parachute is also helpful. Under the heat shield add a decoupler then a fuel tank and one engine. Just one thing of fuel and one engine will work perfectly, slowly add more things so that you are more successful. Tutorials can be found in the menu. Also time warp on large crafts on an atmosphere makes the game mad

I bet if you had the front end rockets boosting harder than the back end rockets, they would sort of drag the back end along, creating tension and straightening it out.

    Lol I know that this is probably way to late but I love that after all the time he has playing this game RCE still hasn't realized that getting to space doesn't mean you're going to float off forever - the best way I've found to explain it is if you think of the moon (or in the case of Kerbal Space Program, the mun or minmus), it is in orbit around the Earth, in other words it is affected by the gravity of earth. So if you were to want to escape the earth's gravity you'll have to go at least past the moon. So if your trajectory is in an upward direction, you're probably just going to fall straight back down and hit the earth again. Orbit is achieved by 1) being in space and 2) going fast enough sideways that your trajectory goes past the earth. Even if you get going fast enough to leave the sphere of influence (SOI) of the earth, you're still not going to just float away into space. It might appear that way in reference to the earth, but at that point you'll just enter the SOI of the sun and be orbiting that instead

    Pushing and pulling works differently if you use vehicle that isn't infinitely stiff. Tip of your rocket should pull with much greater power than bottom push. Use 5% smaller rocket for every stage of "snake" rocket from top to bottom. If it does not help use 7 or 9% smaller thrust each segment. You know how it works

    You can manually (rightclick menu) the heatshield and kick it off. That should work as decoupler.
    Never tried though.
    Also maybe you could autostrut the snake. But i'd guess it's still too much.

    Use autostrut! It makes things less wobbly

    To think that that knob would have reached a stable orbit with a better driver at the seat.

    You might try adding some reaction wheels between snake segments to help with maneuvers

    You have to make the strongest shape rocket fly into Uranus

    If you put the engines only at the top it will straighten out when you thrust

    If you want stable rockets do not make them long. Also use deculpler after heat shield and if you want more fuel use 5 meter fuel tanks an mk-3 pod

    You can use "Launch stability enhancer" to prevent the rocket from falling down before you activate your engines

    Add boosters to the top so the whole rocket is under tension and hopefully it won’t wobble as much

    The power needs to be more as you get closer to the top so the bottom wont try overtaking the top think pull not push
