  • In this video we'll learn and how to classify alcohols as primary, secondary, or tertiary. We'll also look at examples and practice problems. For more help and practice visit www.Breslyn.org !
    Because they have different structures 1◦, 1◦, and 1◦ alcohols will have differing properties, such as boiling point.
    Primary (1◦): One Carbon directly attached to OH group.
    Secondary (2◦): Two Carbons directly attached to OH group.
    Tertiary (3◦): Three Carbons directly attached to OH group.
    Important exception: Methanol, CH3OH, only has one Carbon atom. However, it is counted as a primary alcohol even though there are no Carbon atoms attached to the the -OH Carbon atom.

    In the third example that you drew, I agree that it’s OH is on the secondary carbon, But I was looking at OH directly how its attach to carbon on the left and carbon at bottom. Why did you circle that Carbons that are adjacent to C? They were not directly connected with OH.

    Pls what is the class of CH3COOH
    is it primary, secondary or tertiary

    • @wbreslyn
      @wbreslyn  Месяц назад

      Acetic acid (CH₃COOH) is a carboxylic acid, and it doesn’t fit neatly into the categories of primary, secondary, or tertiary compounds, which are more commonly used to describe alcohols, amines, and alkyl halides based on the carbon atom's bonding.

    • @Chem112

      The ones he gave were enough. How many carbons are directly attached to the carbon which is attached to the OH group. 1 carbon is primary, 2 carbons are secondary, 3 carbons are tertiary.
