Her legs were so much longer than the other girls in the class. You can see how she is struggling at a young age to gain the control over her proportions as her muscles are still growing. It's fascinating. I simply adore Sylvie Guillem for changing ballet forever. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah I agree. My legs are very long and it can be hard to control them. It’s especially hard when you have a growth spurt and you haven’t grown into your legs. Often your knees don’t get stretched. Clearly we can see that Sylvie has overcome that problem though 🤪
Yes, She had years of gymnastics training and then there was an exchange one year between the gymnastics and ballet schools. So it’s pretty impressive that she could learn pointe that fast, but from an athletic perspective she was already very flexible and very strong before she got to the ballet school.
@@latsnojokelee6434 It is not that difficult to learn pointe so fast if you have the appropriate muscle strength that Guillem definitely had because she came from gymnastics. Gymnastics improved also her flexibility because it is not enough to be naturally flexible, you have improve it. Gymnastics and ballet are not that different in the preliminary exercises that have as an aim to improve core strength and legs flexibility.
This is Mme Jacqueline Moreau, one of the most reputated ever ballet teachers in France. I saw an interview of Marie-Agnès Gillot confirming that she was especially dedicated to support and encourage her students. You are si right. Any ballet student id awaiting corrections from the teachers, as it means first a way to progress, but also that teacher pays attention to her/him because she/he deserves it.
Traduction of the part when young Sylvie speak at 0:55 "Sylvie Guillem, I am in second division with Mrs Jacqueline Moreau, I'm 14 years old. I entered the opera thrue a "sport étude" (litteraly "sport stud"y, a program where kids can have normal school on the morning a high level sport the afternoon in order to become professional) of gymnastic. I (eventualy) prefered dance over gym, I became passionate about it right away."
1. longest legs ever 2. highest extensions ever 3. highest arches ever 4. best turns ever Who is the girl in the front of the class? She stumbles around an awful lot (she is still absolutely amazing). Love their leotards! ....and that's a hella nice studio....
🤨That IS SYLVIA Guillem in front (tallest) stumbling a bit like the rest of the YOUNG ones. SHE PRACTICED, HAS INCREDIBLE GOD GIVEN TALENT! THAT, my dear, was the point of the video... to show her dedication at such a young age.
I trained at a professional dance school in the uk - I had been dancing all my life, but there were some who were accepted at the school as they showed potential. They all are now enjoying a career in the performance world and are really good at what they do. If you have a dream you can really make it happen if you want to xxx
i started doing hardcore ballet when i was fourteen too. I had a little bit of dance before hand (4 years) but it was maybe one class a day. I'm now sixteen as well and its really interesting. I've noticed that most people who start later can still be really good if they try. All you have to do is try and don't let anyone else get to you. I am dancing now at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia (USA) and its great there. So just keep up the good work! You'll be great!
She is very interesting ballerina I love watching her performe contemporary roles she has a lot of deapth in her characters she is a great artist and beautiful women!
@Frenchbabex Well it also must be noted that she was a gymnast at a young age before she decided to switch to ballet at age 11/12. So she already had attained the muscular training and balance to help facilitate her ballet training. Much harder for a person starting after the age of 10 with no dance or gym training at all (tho still very possible for them to excell). :)
I agree...I actually didn't start training seriously until I was 12 but I was able to improve extremely quickly and was quite strong, only because I'd been a rhythmic gymnast for many years prior. I have no idea if I'd ever have been able to achieve a professional level technique had it not been for gymnastics (even though I had to 're-learn' and undo many bad habits.
For those wondering about the spoken French oh, I only understand a few words here and there. I hear her saying to elongate, hold the head up, hold the arms underneath, to watch something, all of which would make perfect sense to anyone who has had a dance class! 😂 I apologize for not being able to translate more. I just discovered Sylvie! I don't know why I never heard of her before. There is a video of her on RUclips dancing to Bolero which is out of this world. No wonder Nureyev favored her.
Not to be missed in Athens as Kelly Ap pointed out, since Sylvie's ventures in classical repertory in our days are most rare and previous. I remember with such emotion her unforgettable Manon at La Scala in 2011 with Massimo Murru. This time in Athens at Megaron Mousikis (Megaron Athens Concert Hall) Murru will be partnering her once more this time in "Marguerite et Armand" (December 25-December 30). She will also presenting prior to this in Athens "Sacred Monsters" (December 19-23).
It is really fantastic to see her back when she was so young. It really gives you a lot of perspective. She wobbled when she was in arabesque and struggled with the shape of her legs, sometimes we think we are the only ones. :)
im 16 now and i just started taking ballet classes end of last year. if ballet's what you really love, just go for it! or else you'll live to regret :D
Im 14 y-old now, and i have been attending ballet classes science i was 4 , but i have got problems, I love ballet and if i could, i would dance like them ! OMG there wearing pointes all the time ! pointes are so soft... they look like ballet shoes !
@SLYCoopaEatsChicken this studio is part of the Opera House (Palais Garnier). The School of the Paris Opera was located there before they moved to Nanterre. So the studios are like the opera - royal :)
I'm a fat musician so I can't say much technically about this (^^) but a friend of mine (who is a dancer) has really got me looking up this woman. She's really impressive a so so graceful!
In an Interview she once gave, I heard the interviewer alluding to her proverbial talent, and she answered "Yes...I WAS a kid with talent..." Meaning the rest came with incredibly hard work and discipline...

@theamazingsoter maybe metaphoric is not the right word. but regardless, i just meant that in a stylistic way not literally or about their fundamentals. I know that they do none of the same things or even close i just meant that they are both physically strenuous activities that are graceful and artistic at some level. I am a pre professional ballerina and I know that they are not in any way the same. actually I was calling out someone elses comment at the time who had said they were the same.
My pointe/ballet teacher literally comes over to you and turns your foot the way its suppose to be, or sometimes she just says it over and over until you get it right. My dance teacher is awesome, almost like an American version of this teacher [=
The "narrator person" is her own voice explaining that she's Sylvie Guillem 14 years old and that she entered the Opera Ballet school in a gymnastic sports study program but instantly preferred dancing to gymnastics.
Level...compare your dance did you say! There is a world of difference between lifting your leg as high as Sylvie's and dancing like Sylvie... sweetcheeks! Many Russian ballerinas can do the former...but not the latter!!!
The reason i left the comment was because i was happy that i can dance the way Sylvie Guillem danced when she was 14. And i'm actually not from the US i am from Denmark(europe) and I go to the Royal Danish Ballet School. so i guess you could say i am at the level of a european dance school.

I think in the begining when a woman say something in french it sas that she used gimnastics but she prefered dance (i don't know if that was what she said) but tha think is that it maybe the why... just MAYBE!
@wigglebells serious? this is the paris opera ballet school. maybe you should reevaluate what "square" is. Or do you attend a school of higher prestige?
"Sylvie Guillem, I'm in second division with miss Jaqueline Morreau. I'm 14 and I went to the Paris Opéra to learn gymnastic. But I have prefered ballet, which directly fascinated me" :-) (Sorry if I made a mistake but I'm french ^^)
@gabriellebulka u have to be talented i was in ballet school since i was three my entire life is ballet i eat drink and breath ballet maybe you just don't take classes enough how many times a week
It would be awesome if there is an english subtitle to this. Really curious to hear what corrections the teacher gave to these girls who already show so much skill
The music is louder than her voice, so I'm not certain, but it sounds like she specifically says that she's "on a sports scholarship to study gymnastics." I wonder if her height influenced her to make the transition from gymnastics to ballet.
Her legs were so much longer than the other girls in the class. You can see how she is struggling at a young age to gain the control over her proportions as her muscles are still growing. It's fascinating. I simply adore Sylvie Guillem for changing ballet forever. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, I thought that. Such long legs, but she hasn't quite yet mastered how to control them. But she became my favourite ballet dancer.
Yeah I agree. My legs are very long and it can be hard to control them. It’s especially hard when you have a growth spurt and you haven’t grown into your legs. Often your knees don’t get stretched. Clearly we can see that Sylvie has overcome that problem though 🤪
She started at 12...and this is 14...I think I just died.
I'm dead I know it.
from wikipedia: "In 1977 at age 11, she began training at the Paris Opera Ballet School"
she prob started earlier but entered the paris opera school at 11
I heard she was a gymnast before she danced.
Yes, She had years of gymnastics training and then there was an exchange one year between the gymnastics and ballet schools. So it’s pretty impressive that she could learn pointe that fast, but from an athletic perspective she was already very flexible and very strong before she got to the ballet school.

i've never seen a teacher who doesn't correct. this teacher is very encouraging in her corrections. i see no problem with that.

It's amazing how you see her in class when she was younger. I bet she never imagined that she would become such a great ballerina from that age.

Merci beaucoup pour la traduction
I started when I was 18. It is never too late to learn ballet. Just go for it, and have fun :)
I love it cause you see her trying to retain that perfect turnout. Its amazing even at fourteen she was a perfectionist!!!
True. If you're wobbling, your body is working hard trying to figure everything out. Those are the people who learn the most.
1. longest legs ever
2. highest extensions ever
3. highest arches ever
4. best turns ever
Who is the girl in the front of the class? She stumbles around an awful lot (she is still absolutely amazing).
Love their leotards!
....and that's a hella nice studio....
It’s the school supported by the French government so it’s very nice.
Funny she doesn't stand out that much and yet she went on to be the best in the world, shes my favourite
She stands out not so much for what she was doing as for what she was trying to do. Lovely lines. American ballet has wrecked all that.
Paris Opera Ballet School is so elegant !!
I trained at a professional dance school in the uk - I had been dancing all my life, but there were some who were accepted at the school as they showed potential. I heard that you had to stretch your tendons at a young age and that they set in place when you become an adolescent.
Elles sont incroyable...

im soo jealous. their studio is gorgous and their so good :)
Don't beleive it is a Studio - looks more like a Stage.
if you're wobbling you're pushing yourself all the time and making corrections and adjustments. no wonder today she is PERFECT
I love ballet so much, ha it's why I do it.
This made me realize that French is such a beautiful language. I haven't heard people speak it in forever!

Sylvie Guillem, la meilleure de toutes ...

Im 14 y-old now, and i have been attending ballet classes science i was 4 , but i have got problems, I love ballet and if i could, i would dance like them !
OMG there wearing pointes all the time ! pointes are so soft... they look like ballet shoes !

I love being able to understand their Frenchhh oh my gosh!
In an Interview she once gave, I heard the interviewer alluding to her proverbial talent, and she answered "Yes...I WAS a kid with talent..."

she is sooooo good
thats so amazing! omg
Darcey Bussell also did gymnastics before starting ballet training.
C'est MAGNIFIQUE!!!!:D
thats an amazing class of fourteen year olds.....
déprimant pour les autres élèves d'être dans la même classe que guillem....
Ha oui pensée pour eux...
😂
to train i such a beautiful place wow
well, im taking ballet at a community centre( thats what we call in Singapore) and its very reasonable( & the standard of th class is definitely not compromised!)
you can try searching for other studios/schools in search for the one which best suits your needs. there's totally no harm in calling them for a try-out ;)
You’re BEAUTIFUL!!!👏👏👏
It is, a little bit. I train both and in some ways it is, they require similar things, and there's absolutely no way you could be a gymnast if you're too tall. You can be a dancer if you're short, but it's harder.
L'opera de paris is one of the best school in the world, probably the best, no place for the weak there...
Omgh!!It's awesome!
@Evanescence9582 I mean for the first developpe exercise, the shoes look softer there than in the turning exercise.
I guess this is an excerpt of some video or maybe documentary, does anyone know where does this video come from? I would love to see the whole thing!! Shes is amazing!
Les merveilles que peut produire un apprentissage préalable à la gymastique.
@icantpirrouette13 um just to clarify cause u all hate me i didn't mean to compare them structurally i am in a pre professional ballet program and i know what it is . ALL I MEANT TO SAY IS THAT THEY ARE BOTH PHYSICALLY STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES THAT ARE FOCUSED ON BEAUTY OF MOVEMENT. THAT IS ALL. PLEASE STOP HATING ON ME. although i stand by the fact that tall people tend to be better at ballet than gymnastics simply for a structural reason of fitting the apparatus with operating room.
it was tough at first, but once you got th hang,it gets easier i still rmbred my 1st lesson,i was completely lost w what my teacher was saying. but im starting to catch up w th others now.. cos i practise at home
unfortunately not, im taking grade 5 rad class, most of the girls in my class are 10-12 so.. it kinda feels weird to be th oldest ard them :/
just go ahead & follow your dreams! i nv regretted at all..!
all the best to you! hope this helps (:
@RainingSilence You can't go en pointe in soft block shoes, there is no shank.
its cool cuz i can understand like what shes telling the students to do
since the steps are in french
like you can hear the teacher say quaze
(sp) at like 19 and i was like
oh she means arabesque to the corner
haha
but sylvie has really beautiful extentions
j'imagine la déprime pour les autres élèves... être dans la même division que Sylvie Guillem on savait qu'on pouvait raccrocher illico. En mm temps c'était un gain de temps.
You should, it's never too late!
hardworking class...no slackers in there.
beautiful !
well i'm not assuring anyone of anything, but obviously i can see what level i am at myself, and compare to what level other people are on. In this case Sylive. Wayyy muuuch better than my class! lol!XD she is AH-MAZ-ING!!! :'))
@oshitnotagain i think that the answear is in talent and my sick knees and loins
how many times ? every day for 1,5- 3
she's so flexible!!
Its so underrated, I mean how many people can lift their legs that high of their own accord without anything but their muscles?
Well I might as well quit ballet now hey..
Or stop comparing yourself?
@SteelioC sylvie of course!!! :)
@SteelioC
i think that's sylvie guillem
i know its soo beautiful
She's the one when the girl talks in french and they zoom in on her. When you hear "quatorze ans". She's saying Sylvie is 14.
Good morning from 2021. You tube))
That's how you do it !
Wow there great i can pick up exercises like that but dam they do it well I mean holy smokes look at them! :)
woah!
My pointe/ballet teacher literally comes over to you and turns your foot the way its suppose to be, or sometimes she just says it over and over until you get it right. My dance teacher is awesome, almost like an American version of this teacher [=
all are talented.. i'm curious whether all of them who want to be a professional dancer, finally become one..
Which one is she?
The "narrator person" is her own voice explaining that she's Sylvie Guillem 14 years old and that she entered the Opera Ballet school in a gymnastic sports study program but instantly preferred dancing to gymnastics.
bravissime
Why not? Why should the student wait to correct mistakes?
Level...compare your dance did you say! There is a world of difference between lifting your leg as high as Sylvie's and dancing like Sylvie... sweetcheeks! Many Russian ballerinas can do the former...but not the latter!!!
Next to Sylvie, the all Russian ballerinas look like THE UNWASHED SUMO FIGHTERS - RUSSIA IS THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i now right. actualy i think learning french would be very helpful. to bad im learning spanish this year
hhahahah tell me how good you are when you are in your 50s and still perform like she does..
Mme Jacqueline Moreau.
@SteelioC zakharova too
A prodigy then, a superstar now.
@gabriellebulka Its probably soft blocks.
The reason i left the comment was because i was happy that i can dance the way Sylvie Guillem danced when she was 14. And i'm actually not from the US i am from Denmark(europe) and I go to the Royal Danish Ballet School. so i guess you could say i am at the level of a european dance school.
