She is truly one of a kind- one in a billion. A rare thing is a dancer with such perfect technique and flow that is so on the edge of wildness and ecccentricity- but she never loses her precision. Besides that, she has superb physicality for dance- very long, lean legs, and extreme flexibiltiy. The vast majority of even company dancers pale in comparision to her.
I love how you can hear her shoes beating against the ground as she dances... it is the only clue as to how much strength and effort she is putting into it, without it it's like she is just effortlessly floating
Sylvie was promoted to the rank of etoile after her debut in Nureyev's own production of Swan Lake by Rudolf Nureyev himself at the age of 19! Principal roles followed with Nureyev showing her as his favorite partner. She danced his Juliet, Kitri, Raymonda, among others. And Rudi created the leading female role of his Cinderella (Cendrillon) for her. He had been her mentor, her coach, and who made her a star.
Queen of all dancers ! Especially as Kitry. Saw her at least 4 times dancing it in Paris. Other French "Etoiles" are over the top, but she is still over over & over the top !
@prossimamente- That was the poster's point. Some people say that dancers of today aren't as good as dancers of years ago; that they now lack a certain charm, grace, blah blah etc. etc. But 20-30 years from now, people will be just as praising of these dancers (Sylvie, Svetlana, Natalia, etc.) as much as they praise Fonteyn or Pavlova. People have an obsession with the past.
are you kidding!??! Sylvie Guillem is the best dancer in the world... shes the highest paid dancer ever in the history of the world! and its a rehearsal... all the videos you see of Margot and Maya are on the stage.. if you havent noticed!
@dulcicantor exactly! i was in an opera and the other singers were so talented but offstage they were so different. i was in the Austin Lyric Opera hansel and gretel.
SYLVIE GUILLEM espor encima de todoo una gran bailarinaa ,de pequeñaaaa hizo gimnasia y claro que la beneficio mucho en flexibilidad y esas cosas,, pero ella es bailarina y uina de las mejores
she does kitri at the end i know this is totally random but im doin the kitri variation for competition this year lol but she has the most amazing point of her foot like when she leaps =) BEAUTIFUL
No one can do Don Quichotet like Sylvie because she is a true artist. Osipova is very talented and gifted abut nowhere on the same level as Sylvie, in dancing talent is not enought you also have to use braisn and soul plus the charisma. Osipova has left the Bolchoi for the Michailovsky and one can see that in the latest Gala we have seen in the Michailovsky that she is full of mannerisms and ticks, no artistry, Sylvie is a true artist. Can anyone name anaother dancer as versatiel as Sylvie?
it's all a matter of perspective. in 30-40 years, people will be talking about todays dancers in the same glorified rosy way.. people tend to think that all things were better in the past.
I don't understand why you'd come to a video about another dancer and say that Osipova does it better. Osipova is an alright dancer to me but I digress. I really don't see the hype over her.
@sangfroidjen Could not agree more with what you said. Sylvie Guillem is without doubt a most complete artist and she has set a standard for new generations of dancers with her performances, image, intelligence, diversity in her repertoire and artistic integrity. You are right about Vishneva who admires Guillem immensely by the way and who has constructed her career on her example without imitating her, intellignetly combining classical and modern dancing and expanding new artistic horizons.
Mr or Me Nakia loannides : always always and always very young Guillem video one RUclips 18 or 25 years old but after ? ? NOTHING and nothing more . All people see her very young yes wonderfull j saw " Palais des Congrès de Paris " with Kirov in guest she was 19 years old and " Romeo-juliette " 18 y old Wonderfull , j saw " cendrillon ( 1985 ) beautifull also but after 30 years where is The great Guillem ? J saw woman Guillem not a teenager the last time in Giselle " Théâtre du Châtelet " very disappointing by all professional critics .Genious teenager but nothing more . Always one RUclips very young Guillem videos it's not difficult To understand that ! Why always very young Guillem one RUclips ? ?
Geez people... stop posting sex related comments for publicity... this is ballet, this is art, life, beauty.... show some respect. ¬¬ Guillem's awesome. =D
No. You can't compare them. Ulanova, Plisetskaya and Fonteyn are in a different class altogether. Prokofiev said about Ulanova: She is the genius of Russian ballet, its elusive soul, its inspired poetry. Ulanova imparts to her interpretation of classical roles a depth of expression unheard of in twentieth century ballet. Would he or anyone seriously say such a thing about Guillem or any other ballerina now? I doubt it.
has any one ever noticed that she's a bit turned in. it's hard to tell if u pay to much atention to her feet or how high the leg goes but look at her knees...
You can't really compare Fonteyn or the ballerinas from decades ago to the prima ballerinas now. The styles are completly different. Back then it was all about artistry, now its about leg extensions and turnout.
Pardoneme, no hablo espanol muy bien, entonces voy a responder en ingles: I do not think artistic gymnastics (with the flips and uneven bars) is beneficial to a ballerina. They use jazz technique instead of ballet technique, which can be confusing for a young dancer. Also, artistic gymnastics training is very hard on the body, so why wear yourself out any faster? Gymnastics can also produce a short, thick physique that is not appropriate for ballet.
People have a hangup about money these days. The amount you are paid doesn't say how good you are. Many are paid far too much these days. In my opinion, Galina Ulanova was a much much better dancer than Sylvie Guillem ever was.
Guillem is a force of nature! But it seems everywhere around the world, the rehearsal pianos are terribly out of tune, with the top register tinny and jarring! If you’re as sensitive to music as these top artists are, I’m at a loss to understand how they cope with it!
ballet freak. ur knee can not possibly be turned complrtly in if your hip is turned out thewrefore if i see your knee caps your turned in. it probably comes from her days as a rythmic gymnast. she didn't start ballet till about 12 or 13
I'd always love to see Sylvie Guillem in rehearsal. She's got such marvellous technique yet always works so hard on her roles.
I love her dancing...its so diferent, so strong...
She is truly one of a kind- one in a billion. A rare thing is a dancer with such perfect technique and flow that is so on the edge of wildness and ecccentricity- but she never loses her precision. she's the best ballerina ever lived
she is my all time favorite ballerina
Wow... this video still gives me happy chills.. She's awesome.
@prossimamente- That was the poster's point. she just makes it look so easy!
what a professional, she is brilliant!
shes amazing...!!!!!
she is so GOOD!!!!
Wow! I cannot believe you have said such a thing. Guillem will be soon forgotten. Ulanova will never be forgotten.
Silly comment
Wonderfull Sylvie Guillem until 25 years old but not after ! All of Guillem's vidéos on youtube are vidéos where she is very young

@dulcicantor exactly! i was in an opera and the other singers were so talented but offstage they were so different. i was in the Austin Lyric Opera hansel and gretel.

Какая прелесть!
SYLVIE GUILLEM espor encima de todoo una gran bailarinaa ,de pequeñaaaa hizo gimnasia y claro que la beneficio mucho en flexibilidad y esas cosas,, pero ella es bailarina y uina de las mejores

but she has the most amazing point of her foot

=)
BEAUTIFUL
i love Sylvie, but no one can do Don Quixote better than Osipova!!!!
WTF? Does she really need a rehearsal director? SHE'S FUCKING PERFECT!
No one can do Don Quichotet like Sylvie because she is a true artist. Osipova is very talented and gifted abut nowhere on the same level as Sylvie, in dancing talent is not enought you also have to use braisn and soul plus the charisma. aww. i did Don Quixote! I think she is pretty good!
it's all a matter of perspective.
in 30-40 years, people will be talking about todays dancers in the same glorified rosy way.. people tend to think that all things were better in the past.
so glad i speak french...
i think they're just speaking their own language, perfectly within their right.
I don't understand why you'd come to a video about another dancer and say that Osipova does it better. Osipova is an alright dancer to me but I digress. I really don't see the hype over her.
Agreed!
x
👏👏👏👏👏
she doesn't jump.... she flys
best comment ever.
It's Ghislaine Thesmar who is Teacher in the improvement of this rehearsall
3'47" ruclips.net/video/n2wz0gz9JDE/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
Love Marianela Nunez musicality and precision. She's the Best
(: amazing! loved it the whole clip through.
:( I hope she wasn't injured though...

OMG... She makes AMAZING grand jettes... unbelievable... Hers and Polina's are unbelievable... it's like she makes absolutely no effort at all.
............wow..............
omg you're right:D
i can't seem to define the word "jealousy" quite enough in this instance...
Geez people... stop posting sex related comments for publicity... this is ballet, this is art, life, beauty.... show some respect. ¬¬ Guillem's awesome. =D
It annoys me that people think ballet's just a dance where you flit around in a pretty tutu and wave your arms. They think it's EASY.

She is so funny and cute! haha, she is very expresive...after turning...;D
do you have like the version with the german? sub titles and just the french
@Lucyballet1994 well see that's what i though, but every time i try and look for it by that title a different variation comes up
Because they have every right to do so. Just like you have every right to say you don't understand why they do that. Pendulum swings both ways.
@applelemonhead3345 it is kitri :P act 3 variation I think
Of course it's French. After all, Mlle. Guillem est Francaise.
no one does don quixote better than paloma
@TheGEiSHOChan because she's a ballet dancer... duhhh!
Year?
sylvie is so much better, so shhh. no one is better then sylvie.
I think she didn't strech her legs all the time...
Just joking, she's amazing!!! Wish I could see her live!
Sylvie is 41...wow. I could never have guessed.
what variation was the first one from? i know its not kitri but what is it? the one with all the traveling pirouettes
it is kitri
Kitri act I

Actually its francoise va han kern.
has any one ever noticed that she's a bit turned in. it's hard to tell if u pay to much atention to her feet or how high the leg goes but look at her knees...
Oh, yes, wich is very sad. The Darcey Bussels and Sylvie Guillems of today can't be compared to Ulanova or Fonteyn...
the dizziness was intentional.
I just saw her kitri on video, no her tempo was not all that fine.
You can't really compare Fonteyn or the ballerinas from decades ago to the prima ballerinas now. The styles are completly different. Back then it was all about artistry, now its about leg extensions and turnout.
I mean with out
paloma's style of it is better. they both danced it well in general but paloma's style was better
Pardoneme, no hablo espanol muy bien, entonces voy a responder en ingles: I do not think artistic gymnastics (with the flips and uneven bars) is beneficial to a ballerina. Which evidently no seems to agree with further invalidating it. DUH. Must be that time of the month in addition to a bad day at high school.
Duh. Which is why I stated my opinion just like they did theirs.
Elle parle en Francais
People have a hangup about money these days. The amount you are paid doesn't say how good you are. Many are paid far too much these days. In my opinion, Galina Ulanova was a much much better dancer than Sylvie Guillem ever was.
that is a lie.
i agree with balletfreak107 10000%
sylvie is amazing and much better then galina
I think she slipped because her shoe shank broke...that's why she put on another one..
i actually think Svetlana did don quixote better
She's such a great dancer but I hate her hair :D
Sorry but I think she was having a "bad hair day". Sylvie would rather that this video quietly disappeared, I think.
bla! feet! hyperextension! amazing!
AND REALLY SKINNY.
Guillem is a force of nature! But it seems everywhere around the world, the rehearsal pianos are terribly out of tune, with the top register tinny and jarring! If you’re as sensitive to music as these top artists are, I’m at a loss to understand how they cope with it!
I donn't understand why Is that I don't like her.... I mean she is good, but she doesn't touch my soul. I wonder why
ballet freak. ur knee can not possibly be turned complrtly in if your hip is turned out thewrefore if i see your knee caps your turned in. it probably comes from her days as a rythmic gymnast. she didn't start ballet till about 12 or 13
Beautiful but she does not seem at all happy
BETER W/ AGE
She is not up there with the likes of Margot, and Maya. Then again who is?
