EC model is really a great small body guitar, short scale and neck profile make it easy to play, looks small but you can dig into it and make it loud with long sustain, response well, the tone character is just a classic. It's my first Martin guitar. really really love it! Doesn't matter it's a signature guitar or not, it's a great acoustic guitar!
The EC model seems to have a lot more punch, more projection. Have to compare them in playing both directly after one another. I had the possibility to try the OMJM model and it played very very well. But now I am interested in the different dimensions and the V-neck of the EC model. Cool demo and cool battle! Many thx!
Great review too. Bought one as well. Articulate and versatile. So dynamic in how it responds to your playing. Plays like an electric also. Best acoustic I've ever heard /played
@@Ggman770 Really loved the OMJM - the neck and action was amazing only thing I wish it had is shorter scale length like EC - has this been an issue at all for playing? I didn’t like the EC neck, but I was comparing it to the standard 000-28 since it has shorter scale length and lower profile neck.
@@Ggman770 Oh that’s a good point about it handling strumming better with the longer scale length. I played both yesterday and agree the OMJM was noticeably easier to play, at least for me. I can’t do the chunky EC neck. Jealous of your OMJM! I’ve read that Engelmann spruce is better for lighter touch playing, have you found it good for harder strumming and flat picking too?
Great comparison/differences vid between 2 fantastic guitars. Loved your duets..both instruments shined and showed their specific strengths. Thank you.
Bought an OMJM last year. Best purchase I’ve ever made. And certainly the most expensive hahaha. The thing is just phenomenal. It sounds great for bluegrass and country, which is what I play as my job. Plus, it’s just beautiful to look at.
Oh cool I’m actually getting into bluegrass / flat picking more and wanted to get the OMJM but didn’t know if it’d work as well for that genre (or as an all-rounder). It sang really well, but I can’t decide between the OMJM, a D-18, or standard 000-28. Do you have an opinion on dreads vs OMJM?
A really cool comparison. Wow the Clapton for me all day. More balanced to my ear and greater definition, particularly the highs. JM punchier and thicker tone, couldn't really pick out the mids.
The EC model wins for my ears here. This summer I did the OM/000 comparison in a well supplied store and brought home a 000-28 Standard. Low oval neck and the best acoustic guitar I’ve owned in nearly 60 years of music making.
i think the fact that the OMJM comes with preinstalled pickups is a huge plus. especially at that price point. they cost the same but one comes with a high end electronics system. if you’re just going to play it at home, then the EC is probably the way to go. but if you’re gonna gig or anything then the OMJM is probably a better bang for your buck
I would prefer the OM models primarily because it sounds bigger with the bass response similar to a dreadnought due to the longer scale length whereas the 000 EC model doesn’t produce the bass response punch that I like as much as an OM model. However don’t get me wrong it has a lovely tone. I own a Standard OM 28 and love it’s full sound and bass response. The differences doesn’t come through on RUclips like actually playing them in person but there’s not much can be done about that. However like all Anderton’s demos they are great and so much fun to watch.
I want both to be honest, haha. I have an OM-28 too, and it's my favorite guitar, but I can see myself buying a OOO-18 someday. Might as well get a different scale length AND a different tone wood for maximum variety.
At any price point the teardrop pickguard is how you can tell the Martin OMs from standard 000 from a distance. As a blues player who bends a lot my EC is the perfect axe. Not so boomy as the OM, more subtle.
I preferred the OMJM sound, however; I couldn’t play it’s narrow neck. Therefore I would order a OM with a wider 1.75 inch nut size, or even a special order 1 7/8 inch nut width. I do like the brighter sound of the longer scale length over the shorter scale length of the OOOEC.
After listening through good headphones they both sound good, but the OMJM has more spank, sparkle and clarity while the EC has more thudding bass. On paper I would probably get the EC, but after listening to the review think I prefer the tone of OMJM! Or just get both, one for lead and the other for rhythm!!
Hi thanks for video to both of you. First of all, really delighted to watch Blues runs and subsequent jamming. With regard to comaparision between the two , 00028 sounded as what I like but eventhough I was not pleased with Martin brand last year when I played on all the high end Martin's. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching how both of you played on it with proficiency.
Superb jamming, nothing like a decent acoustic solo, you both killed it! I'll add my voice for Ben to do some lesson's too. Oh, the guitars? well the Clapton sounds a touch deeper and fuller over t'internet.
That sounds great thank you. you guys have motivated me to pick up my old guitar string it up and start playing again. Take care I always enjoy watching all the videos thanks.Tone Leics
To my ears, the EC sounded more articulate and crisp, which I favor. The JM is totally awesome, and I’d love to have that as well, but the tone to me seemed a little bit more subdued for my tastes perhaps it’s the Engleman? In this video, as well as having played them both, it’s still the Clapton for me. Such a great video comparison and fun jam. Thanks guys.
Hi Ben & Pete, Great video & playing - thanks! One question, Ben: What is the name of the blues tune you play for the comparison at 8:26 & 9:09 ? Thanks again, Best, James
Great demo Ben! Both are awesome and cannot be used in the same context as the style of music would greatly steer the choice of guitar! I would pick OMJM in this video Cheers 👍
Before listening to this I thought it'd be the Mayer that would come out on top but surprisingly for me it was the Clapton that sounded best. Just sounded more punchy and bluesy and had an all round better tone. I have a 2010 Martin OM-28V which is phenomenal (as does Pete I believe) and which like the Clapton model has a chunky V neck profile which took a bit of getting used to, but as I play mostly fingerstyle, it's perfect. Think the narrower neck width on the Mayer model might prove tricky for my type of playing however guess it depends on the size of your hands ! So in summary I 'd keep my 28V but the Clapton is the one I 'd opt for out of these two fine guitars.
Two great players but if you believe tone is in the hands and I do, then the tone difference was very noticeable when Ben played the same "A" rift on each guitar. To my ears the EC had a warmer and a very clear distinction between each note and string. In this setting the OM really shined during lead rides but not so much when playing rhythm. Whereas the EC shined for lead rides and rhythm.
I can't believe how different the two of these sound. I hear lots of low mids in the OMJM. The EC sounds sweeter while the OMJM kind of wants to be heard.
I'm more of a Mayer fan, but the Eric Clapton model sounds leagues better to my ears. Either way, I can't see myself dropping that much dosh for any acoustic in the foreseeable future.
Last week I played both. I thought the 000-28 sounded better. Sweeter, more harmonic complexity and easier on my arthritic hands. Took the 000 home. Loving it!!!
I’m amazed at the inconsistency in tone with acoustics. These sound great but I’ve tried the John Mayer one in a shop recently and it was dull sounding and terribly high action. You’d be insane to spend the money on it. I do love Martin guitars when they’re good and I own an incredible 000-15m but same story with the mahogany models - I’ve tried ones that sound amazing and ones that sound dull. Needs some quality control! I guess the tree decides how the music will sound!
“Other than that” LOL. Englemann and Sitka are miles apart in almost every way. If there’s a significant difference between these two guitars(except scale length) it’s in the most important part of the instrument, the top!
I’ve owned the OMJM for 8 yrs. and it’s the best acoustic guitar I’ve ever owned. I’ve owned numerous Taylor’s from the 900 series on down, they can’t touch the OMJM. The neck is Strat like and the tone is superb.
I love the vids with Diane Ponzio of Martin as the guest. I would love to be sitting next to her while asking; "Is the scent from the sound hole a good indicator of sufficient or insufficient humidity level." :) IMHO I believe it is......haha
Is the Mayer model a lot louder to anyone else? Maybe just my ears grabbing certain frequencies better out of it, but the volume punch seemed significantly different.
Could be because John’s is an OM and Clapton’s is a 000, OM’s have a longer scale length while 000’s have a shorter one. Longer Scale length = bigger boomier sound, Smaller = a little quieter
The EC model is a little quieter, but much better balanced tone-wise and sweeter sounding. Your playing on the EC had a little more nuance, maybe due to the shorter scale?
