This video is a good guide for buying any BMW, a pre-purchase inspection guide. I’m pretty knowledgeable about BMWs, but when I bought my e89 last year, I took it to the best Indy BMW mechanic in Santa Fe NM and paid him $125USD for a PPI. He provided a written report. I used this as my guide and did all the things on the list myself.
George is spot on. Look for body problems. These are the expensive things, that may be beyond our mechanical capabilities to repair ourselves properly.
I’m going to look at a 2010 series 1 tomorrow. It’s got 54k on the clock. This video has been really helpful as it’s the first time I’ve properly looked at a bmw!
Good luck!
How was it
i am buying a 123d tomorrow! how is yours going?
@@pav1u How is it? I'm thinking of buying one.
@@awdahadwad7029 you need big maintenance if you want it to last, all the problems i finished not long ago and now its ready to go, save 2/3k at least to invest in the car prior to driving it, there are problems with these engines and car in general that need adressing BUT its a great car if you know what to fix first hand
Check the windows all work, mirrors all work, A/C works, stereo works, horn works. Wheel tilts and telescopes. Back up sensor, front sensors work ( have a mate walk in front or behind when not moving, of course!
All good things to check. 👍
I still drive and love mine every day 🤍
Thanks for sharing mate - quality video.
today i wiill test one of these.. Big thanks for your video! :)
Bought a merc a year ago so not been following u recently, but I just bought a 2014 F20, 220d xdrive, cat n.
So going to be doing a bit of work on that.
So need to check out all your 1 series vids.
After being stung buying a used Celica which was 90% rust I will be going ove the 1 series I'm going to view with a fine tooth comb, but hopefully I will remember your check tips.
Hi George
I have just went through similar expence on my white e81 120d 74000 miles.
Both front wings were corroded, was recommended to just replace them. Also the offside paint was bad in areas and the tailgate. Cost £800
Then BOTH front springs broke. Think that was £300 or so.
Then one of the front shocks was weeping so got both done. £380
New tyres all round. I got Michilin Pilot 4 S.
My cars rear subframe is also badly corroded.
Has a full service history too and is going for its MOT and service in October.
Anyway I enjoy the vids thx.
Just to add it is a 08 M-Sport.
Yep very common problems but once sorted they are great cars!
@@GeorgeAusters Yes. It does drive very well.
hi mate, i know this is irrelevant to this video but i need some advice. my synchro in 1st gear has gone in my bmw e81, what would be the best thing to do. install a second hand one? cheers.
Please anyone, my e81 m sport 2008 is having seatbelt airbag light on, any advise on how to deal with this.
To an earlier issue with the 20D engine (N47 in my case, X3 E83 lci, -08). I have also oil leak, but not much, at both end of the hose. The hose does not cost about 10 euro, as my car is a cold climate model. Then the hose costs about 70 euro... Because you get an electric heater included. Then you can buy the heater separately, but not the hose...
About ten years ago when I driving with my two E39 528iTA -99 and E39 528i -97. I had sludge build up because I normally drove 11 km to the job, and 11 km home in the afternoon, about a third of the distance was limited to 50 km/h. Then we had some days in a row -27 - -30 degrees Celcius... The crank house ventilation froze... and I had some cylinders full of oil (then you get an immediate stop) , and oil all over the engine bay... Then my friend got something to do. This happened to both cars in different years!
Then I learned to cover up the grill and let the engine run for 10-15 min after coming home.
One problem was that these cars were imported from Germany and without cold climate equipment that means without heater in the hose(s). But the heater didn't solve the whole problem either. Maybe the most reliable vehicle for 10-11 km trips, is the bicycle! But what do you do if you are very tired (always) in the early mornings?
Tell them you can't work early mornings I guess
Can you please help me with this issue, how I know which bulbs fit to my angel eyes lights
Thanks, away to look at one tonight
Went and bloody bought it did I! Cheers mate
What’s the boot space and back seat like buying my first car 🙏
My dipped bulbs are so low , i don t know which i need to replace
Im looking for a 120i 2009 or 10, can someone give me some advise or something? Thanks
Thank's for advice!
You’re welcome
Do you know if these but in auto are any good
Hi George, great video!! I am looking to buy a 1 series 2009 or 2010 118 or 116, mileage below 90k. Will just be for daily 20mins commute and probably twice a month 200miles on the motorway. Looking for something reliable, economical(fuel), one that would give me less issues. I am more for a just a good nice car to do the job. What would you recommend? Also diesel or petrol?
I just got 11d m sport 80k for 5k. They drive awesome but what I got I have leak but the garage is repairing that
Thanks for this
No problem
Also make sure the AC works you'll really need it
Off topic but have you ever swapped out the plastic cog in the transfer case on a E83 X3?
Nope, never owned an AWD car
not just this car its every car
I have an e87, only thing you need to watch when buying this car is cup holders in console, mine doesn't have any wtf
It’s an optional extra
The colour of the wheels looks slightly off. It looks like someone has painted them Titan silver like they do.
More than likely have been painted, they’ll be getting replaced or powder coated at a later date!
What are those wheels 🔥🔥🔥
I am looking at a 2014 BMW 1 series, has 67k miles, any things I should look out for?
What you are looking for in this situation is the second generation. I don't know if this video will still be useful for you, since the can here is from the first generation.
I have seen a bmw 116i 2005 5 gears im intressted in. 236000km. Looks clean on the outside. 4door not M sport.
Im not a fan of 5 gears but this 116 has a fair price.
My question is if its worthe buying a car from 2005 in 2023?
If the car was in a good condition and no oil leaks etc
I think yes, I'm also looking to buy one of this 🙂
I have a 2008 E88 120d in the same gloss black and it’s dreadful marred and impossible to deal with. I will be getting it booked in for a respray in a metallic black once the timing chain is done then it’s onto hunting a red leather interior as it’s currently Boston beige, looks like magnolia wall paint so vile
Have you had any quotes for a respray?
@@GeorgeAusters not as yet because most places from previous experience tend to pushy in getting the work done after quotations but I’d be happy with 3k or less. The car would see its value increase after such as currently it’s solid but paint like it’s been washed with a dish soap and a scouring pad 😂
After all the work including a new roof I still won’t loose out if I ever decide to sell due to the condition and interior spec based extreme range of value bmw soft tops demand. I only paid £1300 for it. Was listed at £4500 but I pointed out the dreadful paintwork and the guy said what will you pay! I’ve been trying to sell it for months but people just walk away because of the bodywork.
“BMW Owners watch this”
Me: I’m gonna watch either way😂
Really good video mate!
😂😂😂
Dude with the f20 120d with n47 engine have you ever heard of starter motor issues?
N47 starter motors are usually pretty good but of course any starter motor only lasts so long
@@GeorgeAusters appreciate the reply, mines a 2014 with 70k. Sadly I'll be changing the starter this week as it keeps failing, presume its sticking as always fires on second attempt
I bought a 55 plate 130i very similar to yours a few months back, absolutely love it. Thanks for the videos, hope u would approve of some of the work I've done on it
Nice man, how much did you pay for it?
@@GeorgeAusters £4000 with 120k miles
Good price, almost as cheap as this was
Hello mate, aprox how much per mont you spend on that car (not included the price of the car just taxes, diesel, problema…) ? pls
Tax is £360 per year, insurance isn’t too bad👍🏻
I would be okay with that paint
It’s really quite bad
Hi, im 18 and i was looking to get a cheap bmw 1 series on the marketplace (3k estimate), would you recommend to get something smaller such as a corsa or stick to a 1 series (specifically 2008)
Which model?
Hello mate I’ve got a bmw 118i m sport for sale if interested
Nice
Thanks man!
Молодец
🙌🏼
👌🏼
The car was white at birth…but a 21yo youngster spray-painted it cool black 😜😉
Dm me mate my bodywork guy can sort you right out 😉
That underbody was very rusty!
Completely normal for the UK
@@GeorgeAusters yeah the over salting of the roads here, especially in Scotland... absolutely no need for them to be out salting in October
You forgat to mantion the engin chain!
