How empty was Las Vegas way back in 1994? You will be shocked! - Take a trip back in time...

- Driving from North Las Vegas (downtown) to South strip (Luxor)
Stratosphere still under construction (temporary roundabout in place)
Frontier and Stardust still there. No Bellagio - just an empty lot.
In fact this is Vegas in transition from old to new.
Even the MGM still has the entrance through the lion's mouth!
Enjoy a trip back in time!

90s Vegas was absolutely the peak. Good mix of new and old, extremely clean, nice people, affordable, safe. Rebranding the city to a huge club in the 2000s brought too many sloppy trashy drunks and partiers.
I miss 90's Vegas 😢 I get depressed every time I see the new Vegas 😢
1994. The year my dad took me to Vegas for my 21st birthday. I've been back over 50 times since. I remember back then getting treated like celebrities when gambling in the casinos. Today you feel just like another number. The attention to the customer has fallen to the toilet. But none the less, I'm never going to stop going. I've had some of the best times of my life in that city. This video brings me back to my first ride down the Las Vegas strip. I'll never forget it! Awesome video!
I feel the same. My first trip was in 2008. Some of the best memories of my life are in Las Vegas. Ballys was my favorite hotel so many memories. Since Covid Vegas has lost a lot. More expensive and not as player/guest friendly. I will continue to go I don’t think I will ever get tired of Las Vegas.
The radio is great, too!
Wow. Las Vegas in the '90s looks so retro, now. This was fun to watch and compare the syrup to what it is, today. I love this! ❤
Thanks so much for watching!
Incase anyone is curious, MAJOR changes in order of the video as they came
1. Fremont street closed to autos
2. Main street is now a one way street at Charleston
3. Stratosphere is finished
4. Casino Vegas World front/Behind the Stratosphere is torn down (still empty lot)
5. Corner of Sahara & Las Vegas Blv is now Rock of Rio arena
6. Westward is torn down
6. Stardust is gone for Resorts World (under construction at time of this comment)
7. Tunnel under Las Vegas BLV for Desert Inn Rd is finished
8. Frontier is Gone, Trump Tower sits on some of it's old land
9. Center Strip is now City Center
10. Giant Lion entrance to MGM is gone
Thank you so much for this video
Hahaha you should do another one now!
We took a road trip after we graduated high school in 1996 and we stayed at the center strip budget inn when we visited Vegas. Was a dump but we enjoyed it so much. I wonder when they torn that down
I was 36 and driving taxi there, some good days.
I was 30 and driving for Gray Line, loved it back in the 80's and 90's.
Sounds fun
what are some stories? i know you should many
It was a crime to tear down the Stardust. LOL, the old-new MGM with the ugly lion head entrance.
its heartbraking, that pretty much all of he iconic 50s and 60s style signs are gone forver..
No wonder I didn't see it when I went there in August.
I couldn't agree more. I LOVED that place. The casino and race book were just the right size, and there was always a great atmosphere around the blackjack tables. Vegas is looking more like New York City in the desert now.
Ma St aren’t the signs at the neon boneyard?
are you gonna keep Stardust up and running?
It's bizarre seeing an open field where the Bellagio/Comopolitan are now. That section is one of the busiest areas now.
Tnb Spotter I think the strip looks better now
Did you ever see it when the Dunes was there and Flamingo Rd ended at I-15? That was an interesting time for sure...
I was there in 1995, a few months after this video was taken. Bellagio was an empty lot, the Strip still had the dangerous crosswalks at major intersections and many of the old casinos were still there.
That field was the Dunes golf course. The golf course was fed by a well that the Bellagio still has the rights to and thats how they have that huge lake out front and don't get any flack from Deputy Drip. I've been in Vegas since '86 and I am fascinated with Vegas history. I also retain the news stories pretty well. There's my credentials lol
Will never forget the excitement of all the themed hotels/casinos as they opened in the 90s. Was so awesome!!!!
Thanks for sharing this. I lived in Southern Nevada as a kid and this brought back memories. It's a different world there now.
i love the casino radio... i wish they still had that playing so i could listen to it on the internet
crazy..you forget how much things have changed ... thanks for the trip back in time
I was born 2 years later after this footage was originally created, and I never got to see what my hometown looked like when I was a baby in the 90's. Seeing this astonishes me, as it gives me a better perspective as to what my hometown used to look like. Comparing then to now sees a MASSIVE difference for this city!
Trainking922 i was either 1 or 2 when this footage was made but we hadn't moved here, till like a year later. We came from Los Angeles parents decided to move here, i do remember being sad leaving LA. But I wish i had a time machine since only remember bits and pieces. Me and my family used to go to the strip and downtown a lot when it was more of a family place, then there was a point where we kinda stayed away from the strip, so we kinda were like tourists in our own town and i was surprised and kinda sad knowing the places we used to go have were closed or replaced
The 90s were the best. Thanks for sharing this video - I love looking back at Vegas from the past.
slowmanEF yes
Vegas in the 80s was even better!:')
slowmanEF
I totally, completely agree! It felt like that sweet time between “old” Vegas and the modern LV of today. I wish I could go back in a time machine to the 90s Vegas...
Look at all the open land!!!
cool to see the old Vegas World casino, looks like stratosphere was being built
Started to go to Vegas on Vegas World junkets. $200 would get 3 nights, show tickets, food scripts and $600 to $1000 in action (depending on time of year). Bob Stupak had his private table in the corner of the coffee shop with 2 phones. The place was a grind joint, but it was a fun grind joint.
The Stratosphere sat idle like that for many years. It caught fire, probably on purpose, and it sat for years after that.
My new wife and I were supposed to stay at Bob Stupak’s Stratosphere and signed up for a 3 night stay from some ad in our local paper came with food, hotel and shows. We showed up and they had us at thunderbird motel (dump at this point) lol. Stratosphere was not nearly finished. But there was no internet etc. Got to see filming of a Martin Scorsese film at the Riviera though in the middle of the night😎 which turned out to be Casino. Thanks for posting video
pretty sweet, love the old Treasure Island sign and the Lion entrance for MGM brings back memories
At 6:27 76 gas costed $1.29 for regular unleaded and $1.37 for premium unleaded, unbelievable!
Thanks for watching 👍 appreciate it.
Omg casino radio!!! lol I used to listen to it wen I was very young
iLeanonsyrup 😂😂😂
Lived there for 22 yrs and never listened to it lol
I’d love to go back to this period for a week. Or much longer 😂
Me too!
the old Treasure Island sign! love it!
I wonder where it is now? I stumbled across him behind a bodega in North Las Vegas a decade ago.
Rick Welles
That Treasure Island sign was wonderful!!! I wouldn’t look twice at the “TI” dud that replaced it.
I was there in '96 with the family and got to see the show they had there at the time. :)
Las Vegas of '94 reminds me of the trip Mom and I were planning to make in '94. She hadn't been to Vegas in years and was looking forward to it. But we never made it, she passed in August '94. Miss you Mom RIP
Oh I’m so sorry. I’m sure she watches over you and goes with you in spirit each time you go.
This video is an absolute treasure 🎉 I love to see Vegas history like this… so awesome to listen to the old Vegas radio station… thanks for sharing video
Very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
6 Bucks for an All-you-can-eat buffet.. those were the days...
you can still get them for 8 so adjusted for inflation prices have gone down.
you know that was like the equiv of today's $14 back then, right? Right????.........aw forget it
I lived in Las Vegas for two years between 1991-93 and hated it. But I will give it some props, the restaurants were about as cheap if not cheaper than going to the supermarket. $5 steaks.
FACTS
That's still available (and ways to get it cheaper) now. In nice casino's.
Not on the strip though.
I love the radio station in the background!! So cool to hear all the old Vegas acts playing back then.
I honestly can’t remember the first time I went to Vegas, as my parents would always take us for our yearly trip. But I still have some memories from 1990s Vegas. I remember when you were able to cross the strip without the use of bridges. And another one of my fondest memories was my dad taking my siblings and I to eat at the Arby’s that was located at the strip mall next to the Circus Circus.
Awesome. No goofy music; just the radio. Perfection.
Thanks so much!
Caesars, Mirage, MGM Grand and Luxor were the prime properties back in 94…it sorta, kinda looks just a little different n 2023, but that Vegas magic remains. Thanks for sharing this video!
Thanks so much for watching!
wow. it's a seeing Vegas 1994 I was born the year I was raised right behind the Hilton hotel and casino right next to wet -n-wild... i always wanted to know how Vegas was in those time..I rember the star dust like it was yesterday....good videos
FANTASTIC ! Wow didn't remember how much open space there was. Great job. And the audio really added to the time travel. Thanks, for the vacation.
In 1994 I came to Vegas "for the summer." Almost 26 years later, I'm still here. This brings back memories!
1994 was my 2nd trip to Vegas, we stayed in the just-reopened MGM which at the time had a complete Wizard of Oz theme thruout the place...I went to the topless show at the Sands and thought about all the headliners that had stood on that stage...hit the Frontier and Stardust both... great memories. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for sharing... I had some good times living there from 1990 to 2000... now I'm freezing my a** off ten months a year in nowhere Michigan.
Just got back from Vegas, took my
Parents who hadn’t been to Vegas since 91’ and they couldn’t believe how much it has changed
It’s crazy isn’t it!
Thanks so much for watching!
Now that's the Las Vegas that we remember. Great job on the video. Thanks for sharing.
Totally forgot Stratosphere was Vegas World. Caesar's Palace is unrecognizable! Wow how things change! Thank you!
This is interesting, I was in the military in 1994 and I flew into LAS for the bus ride to Ft. Irwin regularly. We saw the strip from a distance and I didn't make it to Vegas until much later.
Thanks for the drive through what we were missing back then.
So very welcome. Thanks for watching!
To see all the open areas on the strip just shows the amazing amount of construction that occurred from the mid 90's til the 2008 collapse. The same thing happened in Miami. If you were to have been there in 1994 and go there now its almost not recognizable how much bigger the downtown and Brickell area have gotten.
In 1994 I was working at "Sunny 106.5". I was a 24-year-old kid. Good times and bad times. Smoke Ranch was as far as it went back then.
What a cool video, from the scenery to the radio. I wish I could go back to simpler times like this and escape this gong show of a world we have today. Thanks for the trip back into time.
Thank you so much for watching!
Such a beauty!!! Las Vegas in the early 90s. My hometown!!!! I remember driving around where you're driving as a kid!!!!! Memory Lane....😢😊😊
Thanks for sharing, this video is a real gem! I graduated from high school in ‘94 and first visit to Vegas was in 2000. Even six years later it looked very different! Still love going to Vegas but miss a lot of the old school casinos and of course the cheap buffets!
Thanks so much for watching!
Great footage! The local radio is the perfect soundtrack!
Love this Video!! Takes me to my childhood! This is exactly what Vegas looked like when we moved there back when I was a 6 year old boy. Great times
This was during the time that my wife and I went to Las Vegas a lot. There were more open spaces then. Las Vegas Blvd wasn't nearly as built up then as now. Hacienda was used in some older movies and TV shows. A lot of those stores and motels aren't there today. I remember the Aztec Inn. Circus-Circus. That is nice. The Stardust Hotel was a really nice hotel. Loved to play in their casino and eat at some of the restaurants at that Hotel. Across the street was Silver City. A casino owned by Circus-Circus. The Frontier, nice casino and coffee shop. Got torn down. Treasure Island and Mirage. My wife liked Steve Wynn hotels. The Mirage will be a Hard Rock Hotel/Casino. We saw Rodney Dangerfield at Bally's. All that empty land now has hotels.
This is the age of the
mega resort .
Las Vegas Blvd became a monopoly in the late 60s
Steve Wynn changed the image of Las Vegas Blvd
It’s wild now isn’t it!
It was about that time I was walking up the strip just north of the MGM on a windy evening. A man walking about 30 feet in front of me got knocked over by a tumbleweed! Somehow I doubt that would happen today...
I love channels like these😁 I'm born and raised here in the city and it's crazy to look at how the city used to look way back then🤯
The City changed a lot in 37 years
Thank you so much for watching! Yes it’s amazing since I first visited in 1994 - 30 years later it’s unrecognisable!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing! It brings beautiful memories, yes, indeed!
The absolute best prime rib I’ve ever had was at the Sahara couple years before it was gone :(
Ty for posting. Brings back good memories of the old vegas.
Thanks for watching 👍 appreciate it.
The most remarkable thing is the lack of traffic!!
It’s crazy isn’t it! Thanks for watching.
i was there when the Luxor 2nd week opening, and 1st week at Paris 3 months after i turned 21. stayed the MGM forever, i still remember the big lion entrance.
Yes I remember going through the Lions’ mouth at the MGM back in 1994.
Unbelievable changes! Thanks so much for watching.
My! Just want to add my thanks. This surely brings a sense of proportionality to The Strip, doesn't it. From then to now. Good video work. Sure lots of vacant lots.
Thanks for the upload. Nice (but sad) to see the Frontier in the early years of the strike. God bless those workers.
15:14 James Taylor reminded us everything we dump into our drains goes into our oceans. Too bad no one listened...
Was born in Vegas in 1991. I remember bits and pieces of it back in those days. Seeing this helps with that. Awesome vid!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for unlocking memories of my visit '96-'97. Didn't take many photos - film was expensive and had a cheap camera.
That was awesome. Thank you
So much better back then. Now it’s like a metropolis, can’t even see the mountains from some hotels. Love the PSA from JT!
I first went in the fall of 1995.
I went to a conference last year at this time.
Watching this takes me back. Only wish you could see the other side of the street.
No bellagio, no city center, no Monte Carlo, no cosmopolitan,
Aria. It’s so amazing the difference. Even caesars looks so much better. It is always cool and funny looking back.
Love this video. How I remember it, I worked in the Luxor for 6 months in 1994. Man has it changed ! Thx for uploading.
Im in the video. Love it! Meet Frank Sinatra in 88 at the Sands. Would love to move there if I can someday soon
Oh me too! Thanks for watching!
I love LV. Seeing older footages of LV is a real treat.
Crazy how much has changed!
i never been to Las Vegas but this videos are awesome, great times , great years
Was there for couple of nights in 94. Saw Rodman at Ceasers. Remember the Luxor was the last casino on the strip.
I went there as a kid back in either late '94 or early '95. I do remember it being emptier then compared to now. I think because a lot of the Strip was going through a bit of a renaissance -- lots of construction, remodeling, and new mega hotels/casinos opening. MGM I think started this rebirth, but I remember NYNY was being built, and a lot of remodeling of the older casinos.
Love these old vegas video. I started going to vegas in the late 90s from socal, this sis how I remember it!
The first time I ever went to Vegas was 1994, and I stayed at Treasure Island. Man it's changed a lot since then!
The old Vegas had a more intimate feel. Now it's just too big for it's own good.
We used to go every three months back in the 90s… Drove in from Orange County. Would walk that strip, crazy how far it was between casinos. Carrying our little bucket of quarters ha ha. It was a very affordable vacation. You could stay overnight for 25 bucks even in the nice hotels.
Crazy how much it has changed isn’t it! Thanks for watching!
I moved to Las Vegas in 1976 from Kansas City as a child. I remember so many buildings that have since gone. There are only a few I remember. Circus Circus, Caesar's Palace, Flamingo Hilton, Tropicana, to name a few. Times change, and Las Vegas changes in our lifetime. It may change again in a future generation...
I remember how great it was to just walk down the strip. It was so easy to get from one casino to the next. Now you cant walk the strip without being diverted in to an over priced mall or over priced shops. I loved those days.
Our first trip to Vegas & stayed at the newly opened MGM Grand. Our second trip was the same year. Many of the old hotels are gone.
We stayed at Caesar’s Alsace in December 2012. Shania Twain just started her first series there. What a fantastic resort. Beautiful artworks in all the common areas, luxury fixtures, They had a steakhouse that cost around $100 a plate and it was worth every penny.
strat tower being built at 4:00! Very cool!!!!
Last visited Vegas in 2016 and the difference 22 years before is amazing. I didn't realize the Luxor and Circus Circus had been around that long. No wonder they are both so tired looking!
Love me some Lou Rawls...thanks for the video!
I've only ever known the "full vegas" since moving there in '04. Earlier memories were always around Excalibur and Circus but those are foggy.
Crazy how many changes! Thanks so much for watching!
The Casino Radio Was an Added Bonus. Thanks For Sharing!
This is how Vegas should look.
Yes it was incredible back in the day. Thanks so much for watching!
i can feel the heat radiating through the screen
WOW blast from the past. I listened to 92.3 KOMP the rock of Las Vegas. The morning show had Lark and the Bird
Funny how even in 1994, there seems to be more cars from California in Las Vegas than cars from Nevada.
Incredible video. Just feels like a totally different town/city, compared to today. Old grounds of the Dunes, pre Bellagio. (I don't see Monte Carlo also, think that opened in early/mid 1996. That was brand new when I was there this time in 1996) ....just wide open spaces along the strip..which is completely unheard of now.
Thank you so much for watching!
There a few times in the 80's. Love the old neon signs. Just not the same these days with all the video screens.
We stayed at many of those Casinos in the eighties for $29.00-$39.00 a night. Good times and cheap food and drinks. Most
of those casinos gave you t-shirts, or some kind of souvenir, free drink coupons, 2 for 1 drink coupons, 2 fr 1 food coupons, etc to get you in the door.
The Imperial Palace had a big ole shrimp cocktail for 99c at the bar. You could get a free t-shirt everyday at the Sands. Most places,
one per trip. I still have some t-shirts.
the 90's were the best times in Vegas by far.I have a video I took in 99 in Vegas on my page, such good times.
Absolutely! Thanks so much for watching!
13:53 I remember that fountain was there with the entrance now it’s blocked off with a sidewalk and grass
Fast forward 30 years later and Vegas is the complete 180° opposite of what it was.
It’s crazy isn’t it!
Thank you so much for watching - means a lot.
Thanks for the trip, yeah buddy.
OK this is cool, so at 16:27 there is a Dennys next to the Mgm, I see that Denny's sign at 16:27 I was just in Vegas two weeks ago, its amazing that the Denny's is still there!
Vegas was so much better in the 80s and 90s. So so so so so so so so so much better.
Geez, I almost forgot about the Desert Inn detour (9:20)! They tore down The Flame for that project. Great steakhouse!
Cienega32 I can't remember if Desert Inn ever intersected with the boulevard. Your reply finally brought an answer to my question. Thanks!
The Flame was the BEST steakhouse! I liked how the waiter would come to your table with the tray of meats. The old sign for The Flame is downtown on the sidewalk (working) next to the old Lady Luck parking garage.
In the past 25 years two things have changed: 1) the strip 2) those damn prices! $6 to $12 for a dinner buffet?!?!
Crazy how it has changed. The Stratosphere was not even open and the hotel was not built. Vegas is a huge theme park now and cost an arm and a leg to eat compared to back then.
You didn’t show San Remo. The package deals were $149, for hotel & airfare from Houston. 🍀🎉. Sun through Thursday 😆🍀🍀
Ah fantastic! I do remember it! Thanks so much for watching.
Boggles the mind, this was 9,490 days ago. Try waiting out 1 day doing nothing, feels like forever. Now count to 9,490 see how long it takes
wow stratosphere casino is being built yet amazing
A nice trip down memory lane, I wonder how many of the places back in 1994, are still standing, it*s so sad to see how many places that were there, are now gone or are converted into parking lots.
