This video is gold for me because I’ve been that guy who can’t seem to get passed the knee shield. Recently I’ve been studying Craig Jones’s Power Ride Instructional and I think the problem is that a lot of us in bjj get stuck in the mindset of either being past the legs or in front of them, but never attacking the legs in a guard passing sense, we’re always taught to stay away or out of the legs. Thanks for the content! Going to use these concepts at training this week.
I think this is very underutilized like you said and it’s a big theme of my instructional course. Half guard is a grey area and leg riding is a grey area. Both which we can really take advantage of and people are starting to utilize more in BJJ
We really see the change in Gordon's opinion on his new passing instructional, whereas in the first one he emphasized entering a guard, in the second one he tells us that when our opponent gets a grip on us this sends warnings in our head and we should disengage and go to an angle.
I’m not a fan of any strategy in BJJ that involves disengagement. I feel like it’s taking away from the game. One should ideally have answers to positions and technique’s that allows one to reverse or at least advance position even bad ones. I’m not competing at the highest level so what do i know
@@Aaron-sy5yx true especially if you're going for a half guard type kind of pass, but the reason why gordon does this disengagement is so that he can tire his opponents in the camping position, and when their tired that's when he decides to go to half guard. And he also does the camping thing even when his in his opponents guard.
@@Aaron-sy5yx sometimes you have to disengage to re-engage on your own terms. You don't wanna be playing into their offence. Why spend time and effort trying to avoid the sweep to get back into a passing mindset when you could break grips, stand up, back off and go straight into passing
@@LIMIBJJ tbh.. it's is basically fundamentals taught at a very high level, with the concept that each technique leads to another in a chain that depends on their reactions, and if you can move faster along that chain than your opponent, while grabbing every advantage you can along the way, then you'll melt their guard. It's cool cause it's kinda like the Roger Gracie style approach, but at a blistering pace I'm not sure he'd show tooooo much you don't already know. Maybe just cool gripping details. Anyway. This video is awesome because it definitely highlights the huge issues that I'm having as a beginner going up against intermediate guys. I'm in this weigud state where they like to get me in the card but I neutralize everything they do in the guard however I'm stuck there too. And with me being stuck in the guard have to get creative using more unconventional means that I've done and learned through wrestling. I pull guard a lot and I use my elbows to smother their abdomen just so I can neutralize their stamina and as we all know with no stamina you can't do anything especially attack. So I do thank you for the instructional video because this build not only my fight IQ but it gives me an idea of what I need to work on and some options

Just a bit of advice. When passing to north south yes grab their head and pull it towards you. But you can't land chest to chest. You have to go a little further back. Like chest on face both hands stiff armed on the hips. Keep your butt in the air for a bit while your chest is on the face becuz most the time they'll try n invert. This stops the back roll back take and keeps from spinning since your pinning their face with your chest and controlling the hips you know where they are trying to spend too. Cup your hands on the outside of their hips. That way when they move you know which direction they are trying to move to so you just to be told that direction so you can stay completely north-south and when they put their feet down because they get frustrated then you can start settling down on them and then you can go chest to chest if you want or stay just to face and I recommend one hook over and the other under. Set up armbars easily and pizza cutters or bread cutters. Everyone has a name for it. And yes you can do it no GI. Just use the hand that is facing up when you have his arm hooked and control their shoulder and use the other one that's already in place to cup their trap and turn your body perpendicular towards the side where you have the shoulder bring your elbow and towards you than drop it down and drop your weight all the way down into their neck
Even in seld defense it holds true Offensive mindset prevails. Attackers are often keen to disengage when you have the mindset to push the pace asap. Ive never had escalating the level of violence not work. Most predators disengage when they feel like prey.
Excellent video! I'm definitely guilty of just stepping directly into the guard 😂😂I've recently been trying to work on more misdirection with my passes (i.e. get them thinking about one thing, then do another). Like you mentioned, stepping directly is not only super predictable, but can halt any sort of passing progress instantly Love the videos though! Always something to learn from watching your breakdowns 😊
I think by far the best way to pass the knee shield is to get an overback grip. Gordon uses that a lot and that same Overback grip combined with a leg weave is Craig Jones's prefered method as well as he states in his Z guard dvd. After that standing up and loose passing is a solid number 2
@@db2360 Honestly I usually try to push on they leg and walk to their centerline. If that does not work then it means their knee shield is deep allowing me to get an ankle scoop (This is a grip where you go elbow deep around their ankle and grab their butt), From the ankle scoop you can walk they knee to the centerline and flatten them. You can also backstep or enter leg rides, this is what Gordon taught in his dvd. If that does not work I will get weave and try to get into a leg ride or a half guard chest to chest, this is what Craig taught in power top. Its obviously a bit more detailed than I am making it out to be right know but Gord's half guard passing is probably the best resource if you want to learn more details, also Craig has some leg weave material with an overback grip in power top and his new Z guard dvd but its not as detailed as what Gordon teaches in his dvd.
@d b I'm not sure if this is what you're asking but I think the way to go is to tripod using your head to get the uke to put their shoulders to the mat so they can frame. But take it with a pinch of salt, my jiu jitsu is nowhere near where some of the other people who comment on these videos.
One thing I do to get rid of the knee shield is I turn around and grab my opponents top foot and threaten a toe hold, almost every single time they have a massive reaction which in some cases let's me throw that knee shield to the side and pass, other times it ends up with us totally disengaging but it does work sometimes

Catch-Wrestling has a saying "never miss an opportunity to hurt your opponent". Now, I don't think that will ever catch on (NPI) in BJJ - probably best if you don't try to use your thumb to rip someone's bicep off the bone while trying to control their arm - I do think it's wise to never let your opponent have it their way when it comes to gripping you.
Knee shield is like any other frame, it's strong in certain directions and weak in others. I think it was Rickson that said gaurd passing is constant angle changes to defeat different frames
I like the way you look at the differences between intermediate and advanced practitioners. I’m starting to “make my own waves,” but when I get gassed, I revert back to waiting around for them to happen. Im gonna get there though.

Newly minted purple belt. I’ve really developed a pressure passing game, but been struggling with the knee shield as I move from arm weave to knee slice as their knee shield moves up and down. My BB coach just gave me the exact same advice as your PDF in my private lesson. Nicely done!

I played rugby most of my childhood, never needed bjj or karate even, rugby makes u tough. But i do appreciate watching 2 masters rolling or 2 wrestlers reversing and slamming, hip throws and tosses, rugby takes a bit of all that when we use takedowns and slip tackles and break tackles, i think you bjj and wrestlers would enjoy using different techniques to use as takedowns(tackles) in a sport like rugby, a different type of resistance training against resistant opponents except ur testing urself against multiple opponents using takedowns and shirt/gi takedowns, trips and spear tackles.

2 month white belt. Crazy. I never knew about stepping into their guard (de la hiva). Intuitively I avoided that and would always try to pass their knee at an angle. I’m not saying I’m doing what GR is doing, but my mind was already going there. That said, I’ve been watching GR videos non-stop and have tried to emulate him without even knowing exactly what I’m doing.

What's interesting is that john danaher references creating an angle in his no gi passing instructional If u look at the amount of time he spends on angular passing vs inside passing, the angular passing is heavily emphasized over the inside passing The floating pass and the body lock pass are actually both in the same section 😂
Safe to say he'd certainly agree his float passing aka leg pummeling series is outdated. He's had a handful of new passing instructionals since right? Body lock, half guard passing, and passing 2.0 (attacking guard 2.0)
Can you explain your comment of "when it comes to self defense, the survive long enough to attack approach is great"? I feel like that's the opposite of what you want when it comes to self defense. If a conflict occurs, you want to finish it as quickly and effectively as possible while sustaining the least amount of damage as possible, which is a counter to your comment. Love your content, it's helped me alot
Basically I meant that you just need to survive. You have to not get beat long enough for intervention or to jump through a door when it opens. If you focus so much on winning as fast as possible, it would be great if it works, but if it doesn’t work now you don’t have the energy to jump through the door even if it’s wide open
A problem that I see and I use the knee shield I do a lot is when the opponent disengages I sit down when he forces the entrance for me to lie down I already put the knee shield. It's a very strong position to take and very difficult to face.

I’m a little over half way through the video and your emphasis on respecting grips and frames reminds me of Greg Souder’s approach to teaching guard passing(from Standard Jiu jitsu). Greg doesn’t teach any passes per se but he has his students play “games” where the goal of the game is to “win” at particular aspects of guard passing. You should definitely check out the Standard jiu jitsu class video on their RUclips channel. Sure we can talk about and drill it but until we create a training environment that produces similar ecological demands of the guard passer, we’re all really just doing reps at half speed…Big fan! Can’t wait for a Nicky Rod vs Gordon Ryan video!
I have actually been studying Greg quite a bit and have been implementing that training method at my school as well. Not to the extreme he does it but I think it has its place for sure. I am making my course about this actually!

Something I got from Galvao is to either come over the knee shield with your chest and push it down into a smash pass or else submarine up under it and turn it into an over/under. Has always worked for me but I know that’s smashy, but boy, heavyweight, prosaic jiu jitsu which some of you do not like.

For sure I think that is a really good question and one that I have spent the past couple months thinking about and messing with. I am going to be making a course about this but to sum it up but basically what I did was combine the setups I like with the finishes I like from studying Lachlan, Gordon, and Danaher and then using the few techniques I think are the highest percentage to work into Craigs Power Ride Philosophy. It sounds kinda crazy but if I had to recommend one it would probably be the power ride. Its not going to give you a lot of techniques but its going to give you a different lens to look through. Then you watch all of the other stuff and see how it can fit into your new lens. Thats what I did at least and like I said I am going to make a course about my conclusion. With that said this took me months to do. If you are looking for a 1 stop shop for everything Lachlan's Submeta platform is tough to beat. He has everything on there and its only $25 a month. Crazy good value Hope this helps

I am still puzzled by andrew wiltse's passing which seem to work very well (on lower competition maybe?) when compared to the style of passing you are talking about in your latest videos, which I totally understand and agree with by the way. If you are aware of his style of passing what do you think about it?
Basically, wiltse doesn't give a f if your grab his ankle, to him if you grab you open some space for the under hook which is all that matters to him and leads to a lighting fast knee slide. If I got it right.
Ah very interesting. To be honest I don’t study Andrew too much but I don’t think the competition he is going against is lower level. I think he has also proven his techniques work against the best in the world. I will have to look more into it so thank you for bringing this up!
I've gotten a lot out of studying Andrew's passing and I would definitely recommend it as a fantastic resource. When someone reaches for his ankle, it's a que for him to launch into a knee cut before the grip is established 🤙

The concept of never ever letting an easy grip to your opponent kinda reminds me the concept of buzzsaw passing developped by Wiltse.

Yeah the overback grip is a great way to force chest to chest half guard!
How do you flatten your partner out? I find myself somtimes in that Position without the ability to flatten them

What works is to be better than your opponent. Then you can pass their knee shield any way you want

Knee shield is like any other frame, it's strong in certain directions and weak in others. I think it was Rickson that said gaurd passing is constant angle changes to defeat different frames

Newly minted purple belt. I’ve really developed a pressure passing game, but been struggling with the knee shield as I move from arm weave to knee slice as their knee shield moves up and down. My BB coach just gave me the exact same advice as your PDF in my private lesson. Nicely done!

I played rugby most of my childhood, never needed bjj or karate even, rugby makes u tough. But i do appreciate watching 2 masters rolling or 2 wrestlers reversing and slamming, hip throws and tosses, rugby takes a bit of all that when we use takedowns and slip tackles and break tackles, i think you bjj and wrestlers would enjoy using different techniques to use as takedowns(tackles) in a sport like rugby, a different type of resistance training against resistant opponents except ur testing urself against multiple opponents using takedowns and shirt/gi takedowns, trips and spear tackles.

2 month white belt. Crazy. I never knew about stepping into their guard (de la hiva). Intuitively I avoided that and would always try to pass their knee at an angle. I’m not saying I’m doing what GR is doing, but my mind was already going there.
That said, I’ve been watching GR videos non-stop and have tried to emulate him without even knowing exactly what I’m doing.

Can you explain your comment of "when it comes to self defense, the survive long enough to attack approach is great"? I feel like that's the opposite of what you want when it comes to self defense. If a conflict occurs, you want to finish it as quickly and effectively as possible while sustaining the least amount of damage as possible, which is a counter to your comment. Love your content, it's helped me alot
Basically I meant that you just need to survive. You have to not get beat long enough for intervention or to jump through a door when it opens. If you focus so much on winning as fast as possible, it would be great if it works, but if it doesn’t work now you don’t have the energy to jump through the door even if it’s wide open
A problem that I see and I use the knee shield I do a lot is when the opponent disengages I sit down when he forces the entrance for me to lie down I already put the knee shield. It's a very strong position to take and very difficult to face.

I’m a little over half way through the video and your emphasis on respecting grips and frames reminds me of Greg Souder’s approach to teaching guard passing(from Standard Jiu jitsu). Greg doesn’t teach any passes per se but he has his students play “games” where the goal of the game is to “win” at particular aspects of guard passing. You should definitely check out the Standard jiu jitsu class video on their RUclips channel. Sure we can talk about and drill it but until we create a training environment that produces similar ecological demands of the guard passer, we’re all really just doing reps at half speed…Big fan! Can’t wait for a Nicky Rod vs Gordon Ryan video!
I have actually been studying Greg quite a bit and have been implementing that training method at my school as well. Not to the extreme he does it but I think it has its place for sure. I am making my course about this actually!

Something I got from Galvao is to either come over the knee shield with your chest and push it down into a smash pass or else submarine up under it and turn it into an over/under. Has always worked for me but I know that’s smashy, but boy, heavyweight, prosaic jiu jitsu which some of you do not like.

For sure I think that is a really good question and one that I have spent the past couple months thinking about and messing with. I am going to be making a course about this but to sum it up but basically what I did was combine the setups I like with the finishes I like from studying Lachlan, Gordon, and Danaher and then using the few techniques I think are the highest percentage to work into Craigs Power Ride Philosophy.
It sounds kinda crazy but if I had to recommend one it would probably be the power ride. Its not going to give you a lot of techniques but its going to give you a different lens to look through. Then you watch all of the other stuff and see how it can fit into your new lens. Thats what I did at least and like I said I am going to make a course about my conclusion.
With that said this took me months to do. If you are looking for a 1 stop shop for everything Lachlan's Submeta platform is tough to beat. He has everything on there and its only $25 a month. Crazy good value

I am still puzzled by andrew wiltse's passing which seem to work very well (on lower competition maybe?) when compared to the style of passing you are talking about in your latest videos, which I totally understand and agree with by the way. If you are aware of his style of passing what do you think about it?
Basically, wiltse doesn't give a f if your grab his ankle, to him if you grab you open some space for the under hook which is all that matters to him and leads to a lighting fast knee slide. If I got it right.
Ah very interesting. To be honest I don’t study Andrew too much but I don’t think the competition he is going against is lower level. I think he has also proven his techniques work against the best in the world. I will have to look more into it so thank you for bringing this up!
I've gotten a lot out of studying Andrew's passing and I would definitely recommend it as a fantastic resource. When someone reaches for his ankle, it's a que for him to launch into a knee cut before the grip is established 🤙
