    I have a 2009 Highlander Limited. I read a review once describing it as "A Sofa On Wheels". I have to agree. It's all about comfort, and the security of knowing you're going to get to where you're going, and not end up on the side of the road. For me, driving it is a way to relieve stress.

      I will 2nd that statement as FACTS. We put 150k miles on a 2nd Gen Highlander Hybrid Limited AWD and now currently 60k+ miles on a 4th Gen HH Platinum AWD and our 2 kids are not even 10-13 yet. Great fuel economy, reliable, safe, high resale value, surefooted with AWD and proper tires in any weather, and ample power and top speed to reach 120 mph when need be. True Story: our 2nd Gen was TBONED by a late model Silverado and we were able to still drive it home and to the auto body shop. The Silverado was totaled and towed away. Toyotas often don't get recognition on safety of interior structure in a car crash as do Volvos and Subarus but I am a firm believer that Toyota does their homework on crash R&D with their products.

    Negatives:
    Loss of that great V6. Reliable and so much better to drive than the hybrid. (I test drove both and it was night and day). The new turbo will have equivalent power as the V6, but will it be as reliable?
    Tiny 3rd row seats that function mainly as punishment zone.
    Lack of 2nd row bench seats on higher trims. Many people don’t want captain’s chairs. If I have a family of five and want to do a family road trip with everyone and their luggage, I can’t do that with captain’s chairs. Bench seats need to be at least an option, or go with something like Honda’s configurable seats that can go either way.
    I like the Highlander, but it simply doesn’t work for me, and I would guess many others are in the same situation.

      That makes me think that the redesigned 2023 Pilot may be the way to go. Less markup on the Honda in the cases I've seen. And possibly a 3 month wait with the Honda. I'm still deciding between the two. But upset that Honda has not made a Hybrid Pilot yet.

    • @richardtausch2
      @richardtausch2 Год назад

      As an update, I can't get past the fact that the Honda did not take their mid-size SUV and fail to make a hybrid when everything is moving away from gas-only vehicles. So, I'll be going with the Highlander. I thought about the Sienna but a higher seating in the Highlander over the Sienna (yes, it's true) and the higher ground clearance that the Sienna, pointed me in the direction of the Highlander. JD rates it higher and also the bulky center console of the Sienna feels crowded up front.

I drive it in sport mode aggressively and consistentlyb get low 30s MPG mostly highway driving in the warmer months and high 20 in the colder months. Traded in our 2022 HH Limited awd with 150,000 miles. Only thing replaced in the 2013 was a driver side power lock actuator. I owned a Highlander Hybrid Platinum for 9 months. Things I didn't like: the driver easy speak. It screeches at lowest setting so irritating to use and pointless to have different settings when it screeches at the lowest one. The passenger ventilated seats didn't work. The heated passenger seat either didn't work or when it did, barely noticeable on the highest setting. Even the serice tech on each trip back in noticed the problem. I put a little over 10000 miles on it and averaged 29-30mpg. That was driving very easy on the foot. Occasionally I got 32mpg. Rarely 34mpg. Toyota stated that the seats and easy speak performance was similar to like models. Very disappointing. I don't hear a lot of people who do reviews on the highlander hybrid comment or adress the quality or performance of features such as the easy speak how well the heated and ventilated seats work charging port quality sound system quality etc.

    The used car alternative is a KIA NIRO, none AWD compact cross over that is not even in the same class!!! HOWEVER.... it does get you 3.64L/100KM in the summer and 4.25L/100KM in the winter in Ontario, Canada (after almost 80,000KM) with Micheline CrossClimate2 3PMSF snow rated All Season tires (saving $200.00/year without swapping tires=free set of tires every 5 years😉). Compare this comfortable, quiet five seat crossover with heated seats & steering, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and still has a bit better fuel millage even than the 2005 diesel SMArt Fortwo two seater cabriolet that drove like a bumpy go-kart and took forever to warm up the small interior in the winter I replaced with. Now I got the recall for the same and I request Toyota to refund the money I paid for the repair or still paying as my insurance went up really high. Insurance company does not agree to put me off from the penalty.

    Right now you're better off buying the hybrid version of anything when it comes to Toyota because the 8-speed transmission on non-hybrids isn't the most reliable transmission Toyota has ever made to say the least. Also the hybrid AWD system is so much better and reliable than the conventional AWD system. I've been a Toyota tech for 25 years and I have yet to see a single problem with the hybrid AWD system.

    Goreat review. Here is a suggestion for your consideration: add to your vital stats the waiting time to get one of these cars. Your review is useful for people who order this car 12 to 18 months ago. If I want this car and order it, who knows what I get in 2 years .... perhaps a new redesign that I don't like or a car that looks like a spaceship... or even worse a 2023 Outlander.

    Going to be interesting to see how the Highlander Limited or Platinum stack up to the Lexus 350h and is the cost difference going to be worth jumping from the Toyota to the Lexus. I also find it surprising that Toyota did not put the rear window wiper up top like they did with the Lexus. I agree with the point that not being able to get the bench seats in the Limited and Prime is a real detriment; especially for those of us who have furry friends that go everywhere with us. As always, wonderful review.

      This is my exact question. I really, really want to move into the ‘23 Lexus RX, but if the delta is too high then I’ll stick with ‘23 highlander hybrid I have a down payment on. But since that’ll be the platinum so I’m hoping the delta will make sense. Hopefully the numbers will come out early September.

    • @reznor_59
      @reznor_59 2 года назад +1

      @@Carfan678 The RX and Highlander have always been compared and they are actually very similar in size. The RX is only slightly smaller. The only major “shortfall” is the aggressive roof line of the RX cuts into the total rear seat cargo capacity a lot. Both are the flagship midsize SUV’s for the manufacturers though and the RX is far closer to the highlander than the GX which is far larger and fills a very different roll in their lineup.

    Trims / Configurations drive me crazy. I don't need 4wd, the 3rd row, nor 2nd row Captain's chairs (bench please). Yet here in Canada, they only sell 4wd, there's no choice about the 3rd row, and the 2nd row bench isn't available in higher trim levels. I have 3 adult-size kids, so smaller vehicles like the Rav4 are a little too narrow across the 2nd row bench, especially as we like to do longer road trips during the ski season. We'd like a change from our aging minivan but the fuel efficient / hybrid options are ridiculously limited given how long the tech has been available. Looks like the Hybrid AWD XLE is about it.
