This is phenomenal - I just found a void above our stairs today. It’s already completely boxed in, but also completely hollow. I’m thinking of doing something exactly like this!! Great work and thanks for the video!
We've been considering doing something like this for a while, since my son's room could do with a built-in wardrobe to save him space. This video definitely helped visualise what we could end up with, brilliant work!
I told my husband today I'd like to do to make a pantry from our kitchen and came to RUclips to see an example. This will be very helpful. Thank you for sharing
OMG !!! Absolute genius!!! Was only looking at mine this morning thinking what a waste of space it was!!! As a 62 yr old woman, I'm game, but, you're on a whole other level. Well done you!
This is exactly how the master bedroom closet was built in my 1939 house. The corner on the drywall above the stairs is just a bit low (but I clear it fine), and has been beat up a little bit over the years. I think I'll see if I can add a piece of trim there to protect it. I wonder if I have room for a trap door like you put in!
I so want to do similar above my stairs! Wish I had the knowledge to do it! I’m not sure I’ll learn from RUclips but trust me I’ll try! 😅 Amazing work!
This is amazing, sure this will add value to home. You were so dedicated to building this space, along with the other jobs that came with it. Thanks for sharing. Incredible. 😊
I have a few which I haven't yet finished. You probably wouldn't be surprised knowing that shooting the work takes about the same amount of time as the work itself 😂
I have a huge L shaped space above my stairs and have dreamed of turning it into storage since I bought my condo. Condos have little storage space. It's just I lack instructions on how to do it as a DYI, or funds to pay someone else to do it. Great ideas on Pinterest, but less detail.
I'd say just go for it. As you can see I've changed a lot on the way. You can adjust and it gets easier once you already started and have something to work on. It takes a bit resilience and determination but pays off.
Amazing work! I reached this video when trying to research what to do with space above the stairs. Do you mind sharing how much it cost you to build this? Thanks
Thank you. It's rather difficult to say, as some of the materials I've used were from IKEA free wood. Essentially parts that they just give away for free. I haven't done a summary of all the parts I've had to purchase.

Thank you. Well, I've been planning it for a while before I've started working on it and yet, as you can see on the clip, I've implemented quite a few changes along the way. In any such projects, you'd need to be flexible as you go, as I'm sure you'll have new ideas, once it starts taking shape. I appreciate this doesn't quite answer your question though, sorry ;)
Great work really impressive 👍🏻 out of curiosity how much did this cost in materials? Also what size timber did you use? I’m considering doing something similar as we have the same style staircase. Many thanks.
You can't screw the stud to the plasterboard. You'd need to locate the wall stud first and align your construction studs with it. In other words you screw the construction stud to the existing, wall stud. You'd need to use long screws for that, so they go through your stud, plasterboard and into the wall stud.
Fantastic construction! How are you supporting your ladder though - looks like you put a plank on one stair and a box of some sort on the lower stair - is that right? Is it safe? (Wanting to do something similar myself but got stuck at step one trying to figure out how to safely work at that height over the stairwell).
Yes, you are correct. I've used two Makita boxes on the lower step (2 down) and connected these with the upper step using a plywood board. Only then I've placed the ladder on. I'm aware there are some ladders that can be placed on the steps but I didn't have one.
I was in fact thinking what would my answer be, should anyone ask me this. I'm yet unsure, due to the amount of work and effort it took. I was mentally preparing myself and rethinking the construction for a couple of years (event then you can still see a number of changes I've made on the way), with an unwavering support from my wife: "Don't do it!". She was a bit afraid of the scale of the challenge, though fully appreciative now. Hands down it was worth it, though if anyone would want me to do it again, they would need at least £3k to convince me ;)
Done this job myself, one of my better ideas, but used mine to store and my seasonal decorations for ease of access and free space up. People forget about these areas and can miss out on some great storage solutions.
Doesn't look like there's any ventilation in there. Is it a problem? Our fitted wardrobes had condensation issues before we installed vents. Although it was on an exterior wall.
That's a very good question. We were in fact a bit afraid that this might be an issue. So far so good, though should any such problem arise I'd make a vent on the small wall I've put between the wardrobe and the stairway.
That looked like a lot of work and expense (if you paid for a professional to do the work) for just a smallish additional wardrobe. It might have been cheaper to throw a clothes rail in the loft or sort clothes into seasons and cycle them between loft and wardrobe. It would be nice to know if the man contracted himself out to do the work how much it would have cost including materials, too much for most paupers like me. Great job though, looked lovely
Haha, thanks. The project was mainly around gaining more space by using otherwise idle area. I haven't do the costs calcs, though the main expense would be: the tools, which I've already had; and the rough materials, which I expect would be a fraction of what you'd pay a contractor I guess.
Yes. In fact Ikea close to my place has a free wood display, where they make damaged or otherwise defective furniture parts free for grabs and that's where I've got some of these from :) Though most would be too thin for the job so I had to buy the rest.
I can't articulate how invested I was watching this.
A little thing, just really quite beautifully done.
Thank you. This is very kind.
I don't want to build this, but couldn't stop watching still. Magic!

Incredible time, patience, and creativity in the design and function of this space. I'm so utterly impressed 👏

Loving the dramatic music! Great work!
I love the workmanship that went into this , great job done with attention to detail
Thank you for these kind words ;)

That's very kind of you. I was thinking of making use of it for quite some time. It was well worth it.
Wow! Blown away with that. What a talented craftsman you are 👏👏👏
Thanks for showing us, 14 days of hardwork in 14 mins video ❤️
Haha. You've summed it up pretty good. Indeed that's how it looked like ;) Thank you.

A job well done.. I do hope I got these skill to make a nice wardrobe space for my wife utilizing the free space above the stairs 😊
Thank you. I'm sure you do! Just give it a go.
Wow, just wow. Well done for the craftsmanship.

Wow this is insane, nice work! Looks like it took a while but well worth the effort for that extra storage space. 👏
Thanks. It's practically a big wardrobe out of otherwise totally unused space, occupied solely by lone spiders ;)
This man is amazing. That is a talent. I need one of these cupboards😊Do you build these for people?
Haha. No, sorry. This was a one off I'm afraid ;)
Wow. That is a lot of work. Very impressive.
Thank you. That's very kind ;)

This is exactly what we are looking to have done in our bedroom. I’ll have to hire someone to do it though as I’m useless at this kind of thing 😂
Omg- this is amazing! Can you come do this for us please?! 😅
Haha! I was in fact already asked about it. Might be a business opportunity ;)
This is fantastic. I have been thinking about doing the same with access from my en-suite bathroom. Now I know it is possible, cheers
Happy to be serve with an inspiration!
Works great, no issues. Fills and empties easily.

This guys a pro- very creative and professional. Too much for me but I may do one about a third this size. 😊
That’s amazing, well done. Im going to need to delete my viewing history now though as I can’t afford my missus seeing this 😉
This was fantastic. Who is your builder?
Teehee. That would be me... Cheers.
@@kingsgate ok are you a builder/ carpenter? and where are you located?
Well, I guess you can call me that. I'm in Scotland.
Fantastic construction! How are you supporting your ladder though - looks like you put a plank on one stair and a box of some sort on the lower stair - is that right? Is it safe? I was looking for a video like yours. Great help thanks. I have a new project now. How much everything had cost you?
Thanks. I didn't calculate it but I'd guess the raw materials would be around £200 - £300.
Is it just 2x3 wood that you used? And who did you attach the frame to the wall, was it with bolts or screws?
Yes, and I've used regular wood screws to mount these to the studs.
I wonder how much someone would charge to do this I wouldn’t attempt it myself but would like it

Amazing work 👌🏽
Thank you!
Hi! Can you remember how high above each step you went I'm planning something similar at 203cm but worried about head room and yours looks perfect
Hi, certainly. Measuring from the edge of any step in a vertical line to the inclined ceiling it's 210cm (83''). Hope this helps.
super idea , i am going to this to my BTL propertry .
Thank you. Happy that this helps.
Amazing work! 👏🏼
👍
Such a skilled workman and so neat and tidy too a wonderful use of wasted space 🤗
Thank you. That's very kind.
What a construction! Just don't ever you or the missus gain any weight if you want to continue stepping out onto that little platform, lol. 😅
Doesn't look like there's any ventilation in there. Is it a problem? Our fitted wardrobes had condensation issues before we installed vents. Although it was on an exterior wall.

Great work! How high is it to the ceiling (stairs)?
Thanks. If you mean the hight from the stairs step to the ceiling it's 2.05m.
Wow 🤩 this is great!
Thank you! It took a while ;)
amazing!!! you sir are talented!! I have wasted space in my stairwell but I need washer and dryer put there.. trying to figure it out.. wow!!
Thanks. You'd need to make the construction slightly more rigid to hold washing machine and tumble dryer but should be feasible.
What did you use as filler after you put the plasterboard up? was it just Polyfilla? I need to do a very similar project. Thanks!
Haha. That's actually quite a funny thing, as I've used insulation sheets from out Hello Fresh boxes ;)
have you noticed a difference in the warmth in the stairwell?
No difference, though to be fair I haven't particularly paid attention to it, nor have I measured it, so I'm not 100% certain.
@@kingsgate fair enough, thanks for the reply though. xx
I'm just confused why it had insulation on the interior walls lol.
It's an acoustic insulation.
Sound
What kind of wood did you use for this build?
A mix of beams and mdfs (B&Q) and some scrap wood free from IKEA.
I feel like I'm about to lead a team of adventurers to fight the end boss.

what should i dod if i want to put a washing machine there...
I would make the construction more rigid. I'm fairly convinced mine would still hold it, however it wasn't designed with this on mind.
Did you use MDF boards for the inside of the wardrobe?
Yes. In fact Ikea close to my place has a free wood display, where they make damaged or otherwise defective furniture parts free for grabs and that's where I've got some of these from :) Though most would be too thin for the job so I had to buy the rest.
I have pretty much the same space. But I think I want a kind of giant drawer that I can pull out.
That would be cool indeed. Quite tricky in reaching into the top of the stairs I guess but a great idea all the same. Best of luck with it!
Awesome
