"More boring than Tuxedo Mask" is a _hell_ of an insult when you consider how Tuxedo Mask's name is his whole character design.

well, that was quite the drip at his time, making him stand out, didn't aged very well, but still.
now we already have so many over the top cool looking ones that SG ez just doesn't look all that special anymore.
Tuxedo Mask at least had a strong, high-contrast black and white design with flesh tones for his face and that flashy rose.
That, at least, was well composed for what it was.
Hey don't forget about the hat. And the cape. And the flower.
He's got five whole design elements and three of them aren't even in the name

That first image to show off what Magical Boy anime characters look like had me like 😳 that is one of the sluttiest male character designs I've ever seen and I kind of love it
I regret to say that I recognize that character design. It popped up in the Mother's Basement "Hottest Trash Anime - Spring Cleaning 2021" video. To quote Geoff:
"I'm willing to bet that 99% of battle ecchi anime enjoyers blew this show off without a second thought, or even first glance, thinking it's just not made for them. And it is _absolutely_ not, so that is an absolutely valid response! Personally i think the problem is they didnt lean into the tuxedo mask look ENOUGH. Give him a beautiful mask and have him in a regal white suit. Have his cape be made from stardust and, instead of goggles, have him wear a headband and go full Soul Evans on his design of the "cool" guy type. This would then contrast with the lameness that Ezreal actually is - a kid who wants to be so great and flaunts that hes so great and finally gets to look as cool and hot as the image of himself he has in his head.
I 100% agree. I don't even play league, but I do love me some character design. It's not even that hard! Give him half way in between a stage magician that's actually magic and tuxedo mask and it would have nailed it. Like literal pokemon gym leaders and other characters have a better understanding of what this is supposed to be.

Seriously! I mean, personally I like Ezreal’s suit and it’s what got me into magical boys (and later magical girls), but I have to admit the magical gentlemanly energy could have been MUCH more emphasized here.

As much as I love the skin because of the Particle effects and the Homeguard animation you're actually right
*IT'S JUST EZREAL IN A SUIT THAT DEFINITELY YOU'VE SEEN A THOUSAND TIMES IN ANY OF THE COSPLAY CONVENTIONS OUT THERE AND NOTHING ELSE* but the skin would definitely work IF they decided to turn him into that Magical Tuxedo Mask guy from Sailor Moon given that the skin line is heavily based on that Anime (With a pinch of Precure of course)
As a magical girl fan, this whole skin line is great. Ezreal feels like the satellite boyfriend present in a lot of Magical Girl shows and honestly I feel like he does that role really well.
I appreciate this skin line for just doing what its sets out to do for who it sets out to do it, which is to appreciate the traditional magical girl. It’s especially good right now when every time a new IP Magical Girl series comes out it tries to be the new Madoka without understanding what made Madoka work beyond edginess.
In that regard, I would even say that by presenting traditional magical girl tropes played as straight as possible, the skin line feels more refreshing than most new Magical Girl shows which seem to be in a grimdark competition
Honestly SG Ezreal reminds me a lot of some of the designs in Nanoha since those outfits were less about going over the top with frills and more about sleekness, flowing capes and coats, and mixing actual tech and armor with brightly colored clothing. Nanoha is my favorite magical girl series by an incredibly wide margin too so seeing SG Ezreal trashed like this makes me feel kinda sad

I understand your point but i need to agree with skyen in this. I think i would prefer the magic boy aesthetic being in one of the extremes. Or go to the "tuxedo mask" territory and do something funny with the cliche or go to the uruu seiren territory, do something cool about it. He looks more like the fan club owner of star guardians than a star guardian in self

If someone looks at an ezreal skin and thinks he isn't pretty boy anime protagonist enough then you know something has gone wrong.
And now we have Faerie Court Ezreal which does a way better job with the magical boy aesthetic.

The way I flinched seeing Rui fucking Kamishiro in a TBSkyen video (I won’t say he doesn’t count as a magical boy, with how often that mf interacts with Hatsune Miku I’d be remised not to call him one, it just startled me lmao)
Onto the actual point, I don’t know too too much about Ezreal (or League of Legends for the record) but I would’ve loved to see a magical boy outfit that took design points from the PreCure boys, like Cure Wing and Cure Infini. Something more, bombastic I suppose. I dunno this is just kinda spit balling haha

Personally, I think they should have a Tuxedo Kamen skin, since the guy clothes in magical girl anime’s vary greatly, some fighting the aesthetic, and others just outta nowhere.
I personally like the skin, this line with this character is more for fans of the genre, who have seen this thing before, rather than a challenging creative way of redesigning a character.
Yeah this was back when riot was being extremely careful not to do anything too LGBTQ as to not upset the overseas market so they made him as generic as possible.

Reminds me of a friend who said that female clothing are more expressive than male clothing. Like women get beautiful dresses of different design, colors and shapes.
Men get suits just varying in color
A big reason why I normally play female characters in games, I just like the clothing options and find them to just be better. A Female character can be cute looking, Badass, a Dominatrix, and many other styles, while male clothing needs to look manly? Like most times 90% of the time all my male characters in a game look the same since they wear the maybe only good-looking outfit in a bunch.
This is why I hate some games, where an Armor can look really good on a female character, but on a male, it looks like someone had no sense of fashion designed it.

I feel like Ezreal is not supposed to be magical boy protagonist in this skin. He is the background boy that the main character has a crush on / likes / dates (if the series is particularly "bold"). Hell Lux actually does have a crush on him in this version of lore.
Which wouldn't be a problem if that's what Ezreal actually _was._ But he's a full Star Guardian in the lore, and despite his NPC energy, his suit is both too formal and too fantastical to fit an ordinary background schoolboy.
i agree, he's not supposed to upstage the girls and i think they did an okay job with that... at least in the splash art. in-game, yeah, kind of a super boring skin
I know we haven’t gotten to Ekko yet, but after remembering Ekko also got a SG skin, I feel like Riot doesn’t know what to do with the guys in this skin line (or that we probably would have been better off not going down this path).
Not that we can’t have magical boys with the magical girls, but for whatever reason it does feel like the guys get the short end of the stick here (with Rakan possibly being the only exception). Either that or if the team Ezreal is apart of here is supposed to be the more “serious team” then it does seem like he took his attire way too seriously as opposed to having something that would set himself apart from just wearing a white suit with blue.
The newer star guardians all seem to get a little messy, with the ... lore and the designs they all have multiple colours that don't really match.
I was actually so excited for sona, ekko, taliyah to get SG and i didn't like them that much. Sona and Taliyah's abiltities aren't very pretty taliyah pratically just got chroma'd rocks. Ekko just felt a little messy. I personally didn't like the new splash arts, felt too much like anima squad, because part of the charm of SG to me was the "magical girl transformation" feeling of the splashes. It feels like the direction got a little lost and a lot of the guys that had potential for the skinline got kinda shafted.
Ezreal makes a great magical boy, great pretty boy protag. Ekko also has some traits that fit with the themes, a lot focus on his punk side rather than the side of him that cares so much about his friends and home he has gone through a loop 99 times to try and save a friend. He has some great shonen protag potential so i was so excited to see him in this line but it feels like they forgot what they were doing, a huge timeskip and everything. The magical boys got shafted from their magical potential.

Well-said, as a lifetime lover of the magical girl genre I remember being incredibly disappointed that Ezreal - the PERFECT candidate for being a male Star Guardian - got such desperately uninspired drip.
Bonus points for including reference material.
I dare say this could have been saved by going a bit harder on the 'Mysterious Ally' trope that pops up in some magical girl shows. Turn him into the Star Guardian's answer to Tuxedo Mask.
I'm yet again reminded why I respect Skyen so much, he doesn't just look at technical quality, in fact he often barely mentions it, he focuses on how well a design utilises and executes on its concept! And ultimately I think that's a much harder thing to assess, but so, so much more important than mere graphical quality.
I want a just-cracked-her-egg magical trans girl Star Guardian Ezreal with awkward femme costuming exploring her identity and style and being supported by the rest of the team, it's an amazing idea that I'm super sure would be entirely uncontroversial

I don’t understand why they didn’t go whole hog with the Tuxedo Mask idea. They clearly took inspiration from Tuxedo Mask, but why chicken out at the last? He should have been throwing roses about, wearing a silly mask and big hat, long coat trails, garish colours…so disappointing!

I'd argue this is intentional. You see, I don't believe SG Ezreal is supposed to be a magical boy in the standard sense. Ezreal and Lux's relationship was perfect to be explored in this kind of universe, therefore SG Ezreal is not made to be a boy Star Guardian as much as Star Guardian's boyfriend projecting the fantasy of a boy in that universe. He's like those guys from Winx - they are created to be love interests. Therefore to be conventionally attractive to girls wanting to be star guardians. He's not as much star guardian as he could be not because people didn't think of anything to do with him, but to impersonate that generic pretty boy the main character and by extention girls watching the show have a crush on. I was always confused why do you praise SG Lux while hating SG Ezreal as they are both supposed to embrace magical girl shows archetypes, just different ones. And being generic pretty boy love interest I think SG Ezreal has done a pretty good job sticking to his.

So, what I'm hearing is that he's on the opposite end of battle academia. Whereas that skin leans into the actual anime protag kun energy, this one leans into background character design.

Was there more they could have done with the concept? Absolutely. Is this his worst skin? Not by a million miles. Not even by the definition of "Least innovative" or "Safest" - He literally has an explorer skin, but the character is ALREADY designed as an explorer. It literally changes nothing about the character
Of course this series has been "Which skin does Skyen want to praise and which skin does he want to shit on the most" for awhile now, this one just stood out because you gave Battle Academia credit for being a solid fit for the character and yet you could easily make an almost identical argument for this skin
Edit: Rereading that I realize this comes off as overly negative/rude. I still think this series is great. I actually like that you pick the ones you have more to say about because I love hearing your design analysis, I was just wanting to add to the discussion :p

Something I'd entirely agree with.
My idea changes for SG Ezreal (Outside of effectively turning him into a Darkin to fit the "main motif") would be a mix of the "traumatized" Magical Girl (playing with the general issues that being a Darkin has) and the "Magical Girl Weapon" elegance.
Less "Fancy Ezreal in a magical boy outfit that barely says "Magical Boy"" and more "Living Weapon Magical Boy who's just tired of his own existence." Hell, you could even go the extra distance with things like the following:
* A more baggy look with things like a constantly tired expression
* Low HP having him look less and less human because his appearance is manipulated through blood
* Various interactions with the Star Guardians that AREN'T Lux to give his tired thoughts, as well as the fellow Darkin (And mocking them (as best a tired Ezreal could) for the whole "Double A" thing)
* Feral laughter when Ezreal goes for long kill streaks without being killed, having slowly go insane and more like a living weapon
* Just...anything that isn't Magical Boy NPC
The saving grace is his companion adding splendor to his ult FX and homeward run. that's it

I think we have a case of Shinpachi with this skin of Ezreal: the glove is very fitting as a star guardian artifact, in total contrast with the boy that comes with it. So in this skin Ezreal is the name of the glove, the dude that wears it probably named Greg or sth.
