UPDATES: The S1R with 4K/60 does pixel binning, not line skipping, with a 1.09x crop. Pixel binning is better than line skipping, though both are worse than a full sensor readout (like what you get at 4k/30). You can choose other aspect ratios for the HLG files. This is another northrup review that makes me understand why I watch less and less northrup reviews.
I feel the same way. Very unsympathetic, far too much information is quickly rattled off. Bad.
It's worth pointing out that on sensor phase detect harms image quality, it's what causes shadow banding etc. So if you don't need the super fast AF it's actually better to have the S1R sensor.
not on s5 ii , the s1 doesn't have phase detect
@@royalephotography5024 not quie sure what you're getting at on thos 2 year old comment. But the point still stands that everything else being equal, the lack of phase sensors increases image quality. I'm not saying that makes a better camera overall, I'd still persoanlly trade a tiny hit to IQ for a bog improvement to AF. However it's still an important consideration for those who don't need good AF. I guarantee the S5ii does show shadow banding if you push the files hard enough, just a niche use case. For high dynamic range landscapes the S1R is still better.
I think Panasonic hurt your ego by not inviting you! This is easily the harshest review I've seen about any camera, period!
Couldn't agree more😂
I just got one and in spite of being 1.0 firmware , it is a phenomenal camera. It’s only going to get better. Tired of bashing reviews taking some obvious advertising line and using that as a battering ram.
The TRUTH about Tony’s S series video
Fact checking
1:32 - pricing - for sure compare but there are tons of advantages the S cameras that would account for the price difference over Nikon/Sony (build quality, viewfinder, stabilization level, high res mode, video)
2:14 - full frame* it’s doing at least what the Sony and Nikon are doing. The additional features that you’re criticizing with your disclaimer aren’t matched by any other full frame cameras yet
2:25 - stabilization - they claim 5.5 in body and 6 with lenses. A minor error but you should get it right if you’re calling your video ‘the TRUTH’
3:58 - XQD is there more for photographers than videographers. Also pretty sure you’re not buying a V90 UHS-II 256GB for $65. How bout a fair comparison? If you hold manufacturers to a fair apples to apples comparison you should hold yourself to the same standard
4:20 - USB-C - quite a lot of cameras do charge via USB-C but many other cameras can’t be powered while using the camera where the S models can
5:17 - video quality - this maybe true for now but other full frame cameras don’t have the ability to do 422 10bit internal where the S1 does by a paid firmware update. This is the first mirrorless FF camera to allow this. To say it won’t beat the A7iii or Z6 is disingenuous
5:33 - Panasonic has repeatedly said these cameras are focused on photographers more than videographers. Your comment is just wrong.
5:58 - show me one example of Panasonic saying these cameras are good for vloggers?
7:13 - maybe you don’t understand DFD or maybe you’re being deliberately deceptive, DFD DOES know which direction to move and how far. I’m not saying in video it performs well, just that your comments aren’t accurate. My experience with stills and DFD tracking has been that it’s very good.
7:52 - the G9 performs well for stills shooting AFC. S series may be better or worse but clearly you don’t know yet.
13:23 - if you accept the camera has 47.3MP native resolution than you also need to accept the 187MP claim. Otherwise you should be calling every camera out for only having 1/3 of the claimed resolution.
14:31 - EM1X - wrong, it has a 20MP sensor, not 24. Your comment about smaller file only applies to the handheld high res mode which is 50MP. Olympus still offer the same claimed 80MP tripod high res mode (that they had previously) so the claim about them realizing they don’t need the bigger file is just false Tony. Did they really say that to you? If so, they lied.
15:26 - not at all useful for landscapes? There are plenty of photographers with Pentax’s, Olympus’s and G9’s who’d disagree with you. Not all landscapes have moving elements.
18:11 - Nikon and Sony have a 30 minute time limit and don’t offer 4K60p at all. At least the S1 does unlimited in 4K30p. It is still leading in this area against the competition and your comments make it sound like it’s not better than other models.
18:24 - the info I’ve seen says the S1R in 4K 60p is doing a 1:1 pixel readout, hence the 1.1x crop.
20:37 - they’re in 16:9 because they can only be played back on TVs (which are all 16:9). Any HLG compatible TV will work apparently (not just Panasonic)
22:53 - yeah but it’s a piece of shit
23:49 - are you not up to speed on Sigma? They’ve announced an official EF-L adapter. Plus all their art lenses and new designed lenses for L mount, adapter should be within a couple of months and 10 lenses this year.
27:15 - you’re just wrongly assuming this camera is targeted as a full frame GH5. It’s not, it’s a stills camera first.
I don’t know why I wasted my time doing that, it just shits me that Tony is all sour because he didn’t get an invite to the press launch and makes a click bait video with a ton of dubious claims.
Some of what you say is definitely fair and valid, but the inaccuracies and clearly uninformed conclusions or definitive statements take away credibility on the really good points you do make.
@@walrusgumboot what I can say is u did a great job=)
May I add?
1:20 On pricing: "$700 more than A73", false it's $500
2:35 On burst rate: "9fps without af", false it's with afs
8:30 On "shots ruined by continuous hunting": ruined ???
11:00 On resolution: "higher MP in ff mirrorless but...only 7% more than A73", so it is a negative? why presenting it this way? it's higher, full stop, without "but"
11:40 On resolution: "their claim falls in between..." between dslr and medium format? did he not see the claim was within ff mirrorless?
11:50 On zooms: "only consumer zooms available", consumer? why spoiling those lenses without even trying them?
16:40 On High-res: "it's not reliable even on the second floor of our house because of camera shake", what??? product shot on tripod not reliable on second floors???
19:35 On 1080/180: "no audio and no af", true but could have added that 120fps has them
21:45 On Canon zoom: "Canon released a 20-70 f2 glass", when was that?
25:30 On gh5 alternative, are we sure that a aps-c crop on S1 means loosing f-stops? Not too sure on that ...
Andrea Rotelli good points there!
His comments on High res mode in particular are ridiculous. Myself and other photographers I know use them all the time on G9/EM1m2 with good success. And the speed in which it operates has big advantages over doing stitching as Tony suggests. Stitching also doesn’t provide full color information for each pixel like high res mode does.
@@walrusgumboot Thank you for listing all the points. I did not want to waste time in doing it but after reading your list I decided to do it. Have a look at his last video. It's on EOS-R. Unbelievably gentle review of the camera flaws. A Canon advert could have not done better. I prefer not to spoil a single word on it to you, have a look by yourself.
And this guy seriously wonders why he gets criticized for clickbaiting and called out for being biased...
Tobias Moeckel lol
"He criticised the brand I'm shooting, therefore he's biased"
I’ve shot every Sony mirrorless ever Abd I can tell you for a fact ... it’s not perfect. Despite the real Northrop bias. That being said all they have to do is take the a6500 or a7r3, add a flip screen, add 4k60, add actual buttons for everything you need, touch sensitive menus, real ibis like so good you don’t need to correct in post, a great evf, Abd ... oh wait panasonic already did all that. RUclips reviewers need to stop preaching this full frame nonsense... unless you shoot weddings and need fast zooms you don’t. A small sensor with fast primes is great! Depends on the needs of the shooter. That being said this Panasonic full frame looks promising once it’s actually tested ... and signa releases cheaper lenses. To me focus tracking is so much less important that ibis .. bc I actually focus my camera behind it ... by hand, joystick or touch
@@joseluisphotoReal How are weddings the only reason to choose a full frame camera? They're better for literally everything except perfectly lit still life scenarios.
I'm also not sure how you call out the supposed "Northrup bias" and follow that up with perhaps the most biased comment under this video without noticing.
Landscope 360 bc you can take a micro format canera with a fast aperture and emulate the depth of field of a f2.8 or f4 zoom. I mentioned weddings bc in event coverage you don’t have time to change lenses. I shoot portraits and fashion so I always intentionally shoot the right lens and camera for the job. Which for me included a Sony full frame and a Panasonic micro 4:3 ... right tool for the job
They haven’t sent you one have they Tony
I wouldn't either. I would rather Ricky Gervais reviewed it. Would be less brutal.
The brutality helps us save $$$$$ & ££££££ by not making expensive mistakes @@JoeMaranophotography
The salt was strong with that one
@@tonylouisvisionvideography3469 If using a good camera system is a mistake then there are a lot of photographers making huge mistakes a bit like your parents did 🤣
Click bait... I was hoping I can watch your review and "truth" about that camera but You don't have it ... sorry not this time..
The truth is, I'm a Tony and Chelsea fan. Been watching their reviews and instructional videos for years. I own all of their books and they're outstanding. I highly recommend them. But man, his latest camera reviews??? Sheeeeew! The Z6 & Z7 were so negative they actually pissed me off. I dunno what's going on lately... and I'm not alone in my confusion. I am one of many. Oh well, God Bless the Northrups anyway. I'm convinced that they are truly good people with the best of intentions.
Interesting, there are several excellent Leica L mount options including a Summilux 35 and 50mm f1.4. And Panasonic makes a 50mm f1.4. Did you forget the L mount alliance?
I love the way you push through the hype and get to the points that matter, keep up the good work.
It's not correct, Tony, to say that there is no fast lenses currently out there to check its autofocus capabilities. The Lumix S Pro f1.4 50mm that you mention later is in use by some reviewers, including DP Review - check out their sample gallery.
Is something wrong with frame rate in the beginning?
frame rate is weird for me also.
Same here b boy
No, it's just that Tony is made from clay-mation. Like Wallace and Gromit.
That's the perfection Tony loves so much...
Frame rate is off for whole thing. Also Tony misunderstands the effect of ibis vs dual ibis vs lens only IS. The point is that they are more effective for different distance ranges. When he says that dual i.s. is about the same as lens i.s. it's a bit cringy.
This video is a BUMMER. Why make judgement calls about the camera’ss features compared to the competition? Especially with regards to comparing the quality of the video to other full-frame cameras. Pretty infuriating speculation, guys.
Darn hahaha Tony crushes it. Makes sence that the lumix is not a great option for a full frame camera. If I went to buy a camera the lens selection and cost of Lumix would lead me to an affordable system with used glass option. You don't need the resolution you think you do because DVHD tapes look good to consumers on 4k screens. 1080p is all you need and if you have a 4k snob just save it in 4k.
Much as I respect your opinion, this can't be a real review unless you have the camera. Lok had it ,tested it and seems impressed
The Panasonic S1R started with 3499€ in germany and pretty much since Winter 2020 you can get it for 2449€ (Even now. It dropped 250€ in price and there is 800€ Cash-Back (instant cashback, which means the price is reduced in the shopping cart, you don't even have to fill out anything whatsoever) still going on).
So for that price, its pretty much a no brainer. Lots of native L-Mount Glass is there and with the MC-21 you can adopt pretty much all older SIGMA Lenses (or even non SIGMA-Lenses).
I know this review is a year old, but back in 2016 the SIGMA sd Quattro H was released. Its a Mirrorless camera and it does have 51 Megapixels. Its not Fullframe (which actually makes it more impressive), but until the a7R IV that was the highest non-medium format dslm and also had higher megapixel account than all dslrs
Some nuances.
0) Panasonic FF will with the Sigma art line have exceptional lenses available.
1) panasonic always start with a steep price for early adapters.
gh5 went down 500 euro in price in half a year (in the netherlands).
2) 422 10 bit internally, no need for a external recorder is huge for profesional videographers!
3) Panasonic has more experience with high end mirrorless, then canon and nikon,
so less likely hood of unexpected fails due to engineering problems.
4) No banding, for contrast detection autofocus only.
5) High ress may not be usefull all the time, but i can say the same about flash, not every picture needs flash, or an ND, or focus stacking, or color filters, but it's nice to have.
A good photographer has a bag off tricks available, other wise just use your phone.
6) S1R is not as much for video as the s1, just like every other high ress camera.
Yess the S1 crops with 60 fps, but it has 60 fps. Yess i agree they should make clear that there is a crop, but if you want to it;s there no other manufacturer has it.
The premise from most youtube reviewers - it must be a fantastic vlogging camera as everyone is vlogging - must have a articulated screen - must be an awesome video camera with 60p Full Frame no cropping - must have an awesome video AFC tracking -
I wonder if the manufacturers know how their sales are - like Sony - their top seller the A6000 - no articulated LCD and no Mic out and no 4k - ??? are all vlogging -
Easy to crap all over a camera you've never used. I look forward to watching the real reviews of these cameras.
This
Tony, do us all a favor... Take another poll of your viewers, asking them if they need/use a flip-out screen. Ask if they are vloggers; if they're not, ask what they use it for. I'll go first... I shoot landscapes, portraits, and street. Don't need it; wouldn't use it if I had it.
so almost ALL cons are for people shooting video, right? For PHOTOGRAPHERS it is a very compelling choice, IMHO
Always love getting an unbiased review from you, Tony. But how about the good points?
I think it is fine to have an opinion initially based on the specs and other people’s experiences until u can get your hands on review. I’m currently a Sony A73 and Panasonic G9 user and have used both system for a period of time. Obviously using the G9 for its ultra supertelephoto lens for its reach and A73 for its superior image quality. I have to say with just contrast detect af, G9 autofocus is at least just as good as the A73 if not better especially now that with the latest firmware update. Depth of Defocus seems to be making a lot of progress and I think u both should at least make an effort reviewing this development before calling it dead since your words carry a lot of weight and we all trust your opinions and being unbiased.
ryan Tang totally agree!!!
I can hear Camera Conspiracies in the background saying: "are you serious Panasonic? I'll flip you right now!"
oh men, he's gonna freak out watching this camera.
Love ❤️ me some Camera Conspiracies - funniest dude around
Camera Conspiracies is a chill unbiased dude. Hi is also real and doesnt get bought to do reviews. He is one of us. Not a rich robot. *Ahmmem Tony*
I don't understand how he has such small amount of subscribers for such a large community. RUclips keeping him down. #conspiracy
He just did that hehe
Have you not been invited? Have you used the camera? Come on, that’s too much Tony. I have a note of 8 uncomplete truths/lies that you said but I don’t want to list them. What happened to you? Why this harshness? Love your channel and as you said in a recent video, honest view is your faith. Where has it gone? Very disappointing from you.
1.5 crop? Just as well stay with M43. $2,300 just for a 50mm? I'll stick with my vintage glass. You could save way more money if you went Canon FD vintage glass. Like $230 you can get a whole set of glass.
At first you thought Canon eos r was not worth it, then you made a couple of videos claiming the opposite. Then you announce Fuji xt3 camera of the year without making a review or even adequately explaining why. Now you seem to rush making a video which explains why we should not get excited with the announcement of Panasonic s1 - again without even making a proper review. What's going on guys? By the way , used to be big fun of you Tony - are you still objective?!
Well, there literally won't be a "proper" review of the S1 for months because Panasonic is a ways out from finishing it. However, we can tell a lot from what we know already - there aren't any lenses fast enough to make full-frame worth it. There's no lens backwards compatibility like the Canon, Sony, and Nikon mirrorless. There's no PDAF. These are fundamental, objective problems with the camera system. Yet, they cost quite a bit more than their competitors. And yes, we're still objective.
@@TonyAndChelsea - Just 14 upcoming lenses from Sigma i.e. probably all their fast primes. Sigma has announced that they are only going to be using the L mount for their cameras now on, and currently Sigma have a policy of making all their lenses available in SA mount. They also say when they bring out a L mount camera, they will convert all SA mount lenses users have to L mount. Meaning they must be preparing L mount configurations for all their lenses. As you say, Panasonic is some way off a launch of the production model and firmware of this camera, and Sigma have promised these 14 lenses this year. Presumably Sigma will have at least some of if not all the 14 lenses, for when the S1 and S1r go on sale, or shortly after. It doesn't make much sense for Sigma to launch these L mount lenses now, as you assume they'd only sell a limited amount to Leica SL owners. However, for obvious reasons they would be able to sell far more to those purchasing S1 and S1r cameras, when they are available for purchase. If you're objective, then why do you keep missing this component out of your reasoning, because it contradicts what you're saying about a lack of lenses. Also Sigma is supposedly going to produce adapters, including L mount to Canon EF.
Talks about the CAF is slow and hunts yet the footogae he show us is perfectly fine.😂👍
While the manufactures may have over-hype the camera, this camera is SOLID. "All things being even," I would take this over the equivalent Canon and Nikon.
Rick Mentore good for you, I’ll keep my excellent focusing canon. Enjoy you’re gear
I'll come back when you have actually used it.
Rob Mulally maybe Sony is sponsoring this video instead of square space ...
Lmao 😂😂😂
IKR, recent live stream: 'People keep crapping on cameras they have never used, or loving up cameras they have never touched.'
Then this 😂🤔
Did you ever test Leica S class?
watch the footage available on RUclips and look at the sample images rob. it isn't a nice camera.
Tony a few things to clear up to make the comparisons fair, equally fast SD cards are as expensive as XQD, and XQD offers potential expansion to C-FastExpress at 1000MB/s. XQD is/will actually be cheaper for the faster equivalent cards required for 6K and 8K video. The screen is designed to allow proper access to the inputs, the old flip forward screen wouldn't work with HDMI, audio and USB in it. As for AF, you can't have the eye autofocus/human AF along with PDAF, it's physically impossible. In video, the AF it's still not perfect that's true, but for stills it's very, very good and can track people even from the back, automatically. As for the high resolution, you're comparing apples and oranges, it's 187mp when measured in the exact same way as any other bayer sensor, no one measures mp in 'full colour'. When dealing with movement in HR mode, there's a blur processing mode that allows both handheld shooting and also fixing motion blur artefacts, I've shot plenty of landscapes with high resolution with no issues whatsoever, even moving water. As for the 50mm f1.4, it's performance is up there with OTUS, which is pretty much double the cost and lacks the AF. I think once you really get to play with the camera, you'll realise it doesn't compare to the EOS R or the Z6, it's a real beast, and really is the best stills mirrorless camera I've had the fortune to use
I honesty don't understand Tony's aversion to the G9. It's like the 13th floor. The G9 is a much better hybrid to recommend as an alternative to the S1 hybrid. It's way better than the G5 as an all-rounder. Boy oh boy. Sighs...
Unless you need to go above ISO 800. Then it gets unusably grainy like all the other MFT cameras.
@@youknowwho9247 Not true at all, see dpreview, they shot the GH5 video at 3200 iso and it was totally fine. I have a G9 and for stills its true I go max to 3200 iso and still can get a clean, nice image in post. With the G9 the noise control is excellent for m43, it rivals the canon aps-c iso performance. The iso up to 3200 isnt that noticable IF you dont pixel peep. I had canon aps-c and I also had a fuji XT3 - But I stuck with the G9. I talk from experience.
Dat framerate tho
Tony “We love shooting 4K 60” while shooting at 15fps
Is it true it does 180 fps only in crop mode ?
Very irresponsible for a channel that big to judge a camera like that, without even trying it!!!!
I don't have to try heroin to know it's bad for me...
If Panasonic themselves say that the camera crops in 4K/60P and will overheat, what kind of test do you want ? Stop fanboying. The GH5 is a GREAT camera. The S1 and S1R are SO overhyped. BTW you can check the S1 AF capabilities here.
@@DeejaySlamBB
Any camera that is doing 4k using a sensor above 8mp is either pixel binning or compress the image to fit the 4k res.
@@zagan1 Yes they either crop sensor, OR use pixel binning, OR bitrate compression, not all 3
Small detail correction, Tony: I think you said it offers 5 stops IBIS and that upping to 5.5 stops with lens stabilization. I believe that they claim 5.5 stops IBIS and ups to 6 stops with lens stabilization.
I agree on most points, with a big exception: the pixel shift. It is too long to explain, but if you accept that a 20mpix camera has 20 mpix (and ignore the fact that the info is actually less due to the math needed to comb over the bayer array) then their high res is of as many mpix as they say. so they follow the industry. asking them to do otherwise is akin to asking every manufacturer to say they have 5mpx instead of 20 (not exactly but you get the point) so it is not more misleading than the always present mpix count.
I also disagree with the generalisation about the usability of the mode, but it is a fair point because it is your experience. Just remember others may have a different one.
I'd have rather you had waited until you could test the camera for a time before pointing out all its "flaws". The lens line up does include a 50 mm f1.4, which seems fast enough to me. It is, however, hugely expensive, so I would want it to be nudging Leica and Otus levels of performance. For my type of photography, which doesn't include filming myself, taking selfies, or shooting people running erratically towards me, it looks very interesting indeed. The high megapixel facility will be great for still life. I love the feature on my Pentax K-1. At the end of the day, all cameras are compromises, so you buy what does the job for you. Whether I buy one or not will depend on some in-depth, real world reviews, not just lists of specifications, which by themselves do not tell the whole story. Oh.. and yay for no flip out screen!!!
Brian Davies Most of the negatives in this review don’t affect me either. Those prices though...
You could be pleased even more, should Leica announce their red dotted sibling with a 6k pricetag ;)
Very sensible
Lumix 50mm 1.4 is an amazing lens. Tony’s approach is completely bias against the S1/R
Sigma lenses adapt to this camera and do not lose AF. It focuses well. ...so there are fast lenses that are available to use with this. I found the focus to be accurate as well.
Is this video sponsored by Sony? 😗
Maybe Canon. When Canon saw this FHD 180 FPS they said lets look like this featured worst than our FHD 60FPS without sound.
This is exactly what I was thinking! The S1 has so much to offer: Fantastic low light sensitivity and low noise at high ISO settings, class leading EVF, excellent video performance and internal recording features, Pro grade body with excellent weather sealing and ergonomics, dual high speed card slots required for the video performance this camera is capable of, and so on... Tony really tries to harp on the bad and a lot of what he is saying is either not justified or is presumed. This good looking guy with a smooth voice tries to present as being analytical and objective but in the end much of what he surmises is way off base! I am pretty sure that Sony is paying him handsomely.
what truth in this Tony? it's all speculation on your part since you haven't tested it yourself. Clickbait.
True can't really comment if you have not actually tested it
One final comment: You claim that the high res mode delivers an effective 94.6 Mp *with full color*, rather than 187 Mp. I think in an important sense you are right, but I also think you really should compare apples with apples rather than with oranges. For one thing, this is not the same as what a 94.6 Mp bayer sensor would or could deliver (and I know you know this), because of pixel density and consequent differences in noise levels you can get from pixel-shifted stacking.
Secondly, you're totally correct about megapixels not being what matters. The reason for that, I would suggest, is that what matters is the amount of information captured in the image. A 94.6 Mp bayer sensor captures a lot less information than is captured in a 94.6 Mp *full color* image, right? I might be missing something, but why then can one not at least argue that the resulting image is *equivalent to* a 187 Mp image *from an otherwise similar bayer sensor*, thereby comparing like with like? I agree that presenting the image as 94.6 Mp full color is better. As with the Pentax K-1's 4-image pixel shift, the image file is larger, contains more information, and consequently can deliver much better IQ, but with resolution unchanged.
Panasonic has been extremely accurate with AF-S. AF-C is definitely an issue but DFD and contrast is incredibly accurate compared to pure Phase Detect.
I got to play with this ( the S1R) today and see some images also. I found it to be user friendly. The EVF is great! The grip is great! I need to rent one and shoot some birds and sports before I decide.
I love how Tony implies that panasonic should have somehow waited a couple years to develop like 10 lenses before launching? So ridiculous, no manufacturer would ever do that. How do you know Sigma isn't going to release most their glass with L mount in the next 6 months? Isn't that the plan?
16:48 I have a studio on the 19th floor and I have experienced that first hand. Steady tripod, remote controlled shutter release, disabled image stabilization, and electronic shutter were used, and I still get 1-2 pixels misaligned.
Lumix cameras are a joy to use and the durability is unparalled. My S1 is coming
Stopped watching after you said they only have 2 zooms and no fast f1.4 lenses available because it's fairly common knowledge that they have the 50 1.4. We've known that for months. Feel like you missed the mark on this video, but it's probably hard to talk knowledgeably about a camera you haven't actually used. Good luck on the next one
I literally show the 50 f1.4 in the video.
As a medium format film landscape photographer this camera exactly what I’m looking for. My issue is purely price, they should have priced it lower than all the competitors to get the l Mount in peoples hands.
*Will Panasonic make one camera that works both Panasonic S1 & S1R for shooting photos and videos?*
Claims M4/3 is dead. Advises everyone to buy a GH5.
James Birtwhistle lol
Yeah, noticed that.
TBH, I've seen the GH5 image on the big screen. It looks fine.
STORY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.
I mean the reason Tony recommends the GH5 here is one of the major reasons why it would be folly for a company like Panasonic to drop their crop sensor line - when introducing new technologies like 4k, like image stabilisation, like new focus systems, it's often more difficult to implement the larger the sensor is.
What he actually said was that the GH5 is better for video than the S1/R. That's not the same as "recommending it for everyone".
@@youknowwho9247 Yes, thank you for the helpful clarification. It wasn't an exact quote. Sorry to anyone who read my comment and thought I was claiming Tony had actually insisted that every person in the entire world must own a GH5.
Maybe not perfect, but the very thought of a Full Frame Lumix is like a dream come true. Panasonic is like the hurricane of weather, one that can travel across the Sahara and still maintain category 5.
That didn’t sound right
Oh brother .. the g9 with the latest firmware has fine auto focus ... phase detect is not an end all be all.
It works in this small Resolution camera, but is harder for high Resolution
Remember m4/3 has more depth of field so full frame with fast glass may not be as good . Have to wait and see real life performance.
G9 in AF-C Is nothing close to A7III. Also especially as you have more depth of field.
Ladislav svencik not true
@@joseluisphotoReal Of course it's true. Everyone acknowledges that Panasonic's af is the worst in the industry but Panasonic shooters.
Regarding the sensor shift and lack of lenses which could cope with the super high files. I think from my experience the Leica SL glass would be more than sharp enough for it..
The Panasonic, Canon, and Nikon full frame mirrorless offerings were produced to stop the loss of customers to Sony. The real performers for these mirrorless systems will come in a couple years when these cameras get an update.
Still won't catch up to Sony.
@@mikemuha7537 I wouldn't be so sure. Sony has a head start in tech, but Nikon and Canon already leap frogged in terms of usability. It's gonna be a crowded market.
Good for us. Prices will have to drop. Especially the gm lenses right now are way overpriced.
@@youknowwho9247 I'd like that outcome.
What do you mean by leapfrogged in usability?
Do you mean ergonomic?
@@mikemuha7537 Mostly ergonomics and menus, yes. I'm not denying the advances in tech Sony has made, or the quality of their sensors. But I find their bodies a pain to use, and certainly way less intuitive and comfortable than the eos R or Z6/7. Personal preference of course, but I've heard that a lot from other people too.
Funny thing is, with the GH5 recommendation, isn't it Tony said that Micro Four Thirds is dead? Or am I missing something....
S1 best camera I've owned.
Tony, good video, but you're making some complaints without having used the camera, which is unfair. Certain things we can tell from the specs, but not everything. When you complain about them "Drawing Boxes" but pictures aren't necessarily in focus - certainly that's possible, but you need to test that features out before you complain about. I believe people (Max Yuryev) were saying the opposite about the A6400 - where the boxes seemed slow, almost as if it can't keep up, but the actual pictures looked great and in focus on a computer.
Similarly when you talk about image stacking; how perfectly still everything has to be and it's a useless marketing feature. Well, let's see.. my cell phone has image stacking and that works well even while hand-holding. I'm not saying Panasonic will achieve the same feat, but we need to test before we have these gripes.
I'm not expecting this camera to win any awards first time out, but we need to give it a fair chance and try to review it without bias.
Anyway, love the channel, keep up the good work. Like many viewers, I appreciate the criticism, but _after_ testing.
I cannot understand why you hate so much this camera. Really, why? Following these thoughts we have to throw against the ground every EOS-R that we see... 4k 30 fps with 1.7 crop .... It is amazing how you presented a FHD 180fps as a bad thing... Could you let me know how many sound record the EOS-R at 60 FPS? and this final
comparison with the GH5 was amazing as well... Could you let me know how to obtain a 4k 24fps full frame at 1.4 with the GH5 or with the amazing canon 50mm at 1.2? let's do some simple maths. 1,2x1,7=2,04. I like hear the truth doesn't matter of how bad it is but this video is not about the truth. This video is about views. Enjoy all views that will generate this click-bait.
Love your work Tony. Another great video. Say hi to everyone.
The Olympus EM1X does have 80MP high res mode on a tripod and 50MP handheld. From what I've seen I'm happy with getting the GH5, but Tony why are you recommending a "dead" sensor size camera!?!!
Tony Northrup "I like a big body"
Chelsea swings her head around and screams "WHAT?!?!"

which 256Gb SD card costs $65 Tony??
Certainly not a UHS-II card..
You can get a SanDisk V30 UHS-I card for around that price
You can buy a 256gb UHS-I Sandisk Extreme (90mb) for $63 on amazon right now. You don't need for UHS-II for recording video or photography if you are not pushing the buffer.
@@jeffmiller6343 definitely not safe to buy Sd Cards on Amazon

Talking about price, for Canadians is just insane, $5000 for S1R, the most expensive 50mm lens $3200. Wow
haha yeah -- try $6500 CAD for the "unofficial Panasonic ENG kit" - i almost bought an S1 for video, until i realized i would have to call the mortgage brokerage... S1, kit lens, xlr adapter, firmware(!?!), tax... $6500. LOL! LOL Panasonic!
RAN TO THE LOCAL CAMERA STORE, bought the X-T3 before they have the chance to end the sale with the new Sennheiser wireless kit for $3500 cheaper. it's a nicer lens, better ergonomics too. i'll buy a used full frame for stills when another good camera comes out. sigh.
Australia too, it’s ridiculous hopefully by the time the s1R 2 comes out the US dollar has dropped a bit.
The S1 will support VLog NOT VLog -L-- meaning 14 Stops DR?
Hello ; , how did you find the S1R's AutoFocus for sports photos at night, with good lighting? Thank you
So, let me understand this -- a 28 minute video on a camera you actually haven't used? Is this the criteria you apply with every camera you review? Instead of rushing just for the sake of getting a review out there, why not wait and do a proper analysis?
Great, no flippy screen! Those things are fragile and get in the way. The one on my Olympus doesn't allow me to view it properly when I have it mounted via L bracket on a tripod. I've just had the second one replaced - one misplaced touch when the thing is open and it's damaged. I don't vlog. I take pictures.
I'm currently using the S1R rented from Lensrental, and I have to disagree with your general negativity toward this camera. It is a fine performer with many on the mark features. I respect your views generally but in this case I think you are under appreciating this camera. I'm using it with the 24-105 lens.
Oh man you’re gonna get some fanboi hate on this one 😬
And deservingly so. He’s got a lot of assumptions about the autofocus, ibis and high res mode without actually using the camera
It's called marketing, Wes ;)
The Gh5 suggestion at the end of the video was so thoughtful. Thank you for the practical advise!
What mic are you using? Typically those designs have a side mounted diaphragm...
I can't help myself ...but...to say that the 180 fps is bummer against other cameras is bit harsh... As the same limitation count for GH5... So.. .Well it's the only brand with 180 fps and all they cameras share the same limitation.. So just to say it's the same for all would be nice and correct.. And the other thing is... Why not talk about the benefits of FF chip? I have seen some HIGH ISO tests and it produced from my point much nicer video image then Sony A7III... And that's coming from guy who have both GH5 and A7III... And know limitations of both cameras.. I too cry for the flip screen as it is such nice thing to have ... Anywaay keep the good work! Love your channel.
People have been overhyping it for a while, thx for putting out a really level headed take on this
What's the point of having a top LCD in a mirrorless Camera when the information is available on the EVF or the rear LCD
Oh shut-up, Tony.
Tony I've shot the 100MP Phase One on multiple occasions (only rent it for the most critical work) and while I'm mostly on sticks when shooting it, I have shot it handheld with no problem and the images were tack sharp. Granted it's a massive camera that's extremely heavy which helps with holding it steady.
Nice video as always but what's with that frame rate?
See the Video about the lies of the cameras manufacturers
Thank you! Enjoy your stuff even when I'm not so interested in the subject matter. Have a great weekend!
Tony, I really enjoy your reviews. I need to point out one issue that has slapped me full in the face after I purchased a Panasonic GH5 matched with your suggested Sigma EF mount 18-35 f/1.8 and 50-100 f/1.8 Art lenses and Metabones EF to MFT Speed Booster XL. First thing I noticed was that all of my images had a very notable vignette and I freaked out. After removing lens hoods and filter attachments, the vignette (on both lenses) still persisted. After a bit of research on Metabones website I discovered that they quite clearly state that the 0.64x XL speed booster is NOT compatible with APS-C formatted lenses and MFT sensors. They instead recommend the 0.71x ULTRA speed boosters for these lenses to accommodate the smaller sensor size and different flange distance. You may wish to update your information on this matter before other followers of your channel go out and make the same mistake that I did.
Awfully critical without taking it out and thoroughly reviewing it in the field.
For your hi resolution claim of 187mp being too high... yes it's true in most cases. But just like on the Lumix G9 you will be able to choose less resolution. The G9 shoots up to 80mp, but I prefer to use the 40mp mode because it's a lot quicker, and I'm pretty sure it only take 4 shots, which also means less chance for weird artifacts due to movement.
Weren't invited on the junket to Barcelona, were you? :-)
Ihan peilikameran kokoinen :) Varsin mielenkiintoinen ja hyvä pikaesittely, kiitos siitä.
Having trouble with leaf movement for high res landscape? Just use a heavy tripod for each leaf in the landscape. Do I have to think of everything?!
I have big hands, but never had a reason to complain of the A7r's (1st gen.) body size. To the contrary, I much preferred it over the Canon EOS 5D II I'd sold to buy the Sony. And I was rather disappointed to discover the second and the third iterations of the A7 -series were considerably larger and heavier. Same with the Fuji XT-20 - it was almost a perfect size for Me - if anything a smidgen larger than I'd like. This Panasonic is not only rather overpriced, but also way to large and heavy.
Oh no, you used those three really bad YT words "The Truth about"
Hi Tony, I am not worried about the size or price of the body or lenses. My only gripe with the new Pany FF MILC is, it doesn't support the all-I intra and for that matter their max supported bit-rate is 150Mbps, that will be only available when you will buy an add-on V-Log, otherwise it's even more limited.
I was expecting better from Pany!
I am actually happy with 1.5X crop in 4k60p mode too as well, considering in slow-mo videos, most of the time I am trying to focus, so in those scenerios shooting in super35 mode and getting a little bit closer to the subject actually may help.
It's just the bitrates. Do you think using Atomos Ninja V on this bad boy we can get all-i-intra?
I've got a Panasonic G9, Metabones 0.71x, dumb adapter, Sigma 18-35 1.8, and Sigma 50-100 1.8. At the end of this video you were making me feel pretty good about my current setup. lol
I applaud Panasonic for what they're trying to do with their new full frame cameras, but like Nikon and Canon's new systems, they've got some work to do. I'm not in any rush to upgrade to full frame just yet so I'll just wait out how everything develops over the next year or so.
As always, thanks for the thoughts, good humor and clean speech, -S- Tony, but we will wait for a hand-on review;)
Uhhh, like nobody, NOBODY has a production model and you don't even have a pre-production camera. But here ya are making all these comments on a camera based on paper. WTF! get the camera in hands then make some judgments.
Best spec camera and very fair price of the mirrorless when you see 5K evf and 2 card slots. Considering that Canon is charging 2400 USD for a camera that doesn't even shoot 120 fps in 1080 and the Panasonic being the only one with 60 fps 4K - It's going to be very popular with high end hybrid users that are doing commercials and shorter higher end video work. And it will have 10 bit internal recording for videos. None of the others have that. This shows that the camera is built for high end and has very powerful processing ability. Compare that to a 100 USD less camera in the EOS-R that only has the same processing chip as the APS-C M50.
I don't know if it's funny or sad that Tony is talking about every single negative point he finds on this camera... and is releasing his EOS-R video tomorrow that is by far the most expensive body for the buck - not offering even half of the features that these 2 cameras are offering. Lenses will be an issue at the start. But Sigma will be offering lenses in the long run so there is no doubt that this camera will get top quality native lenses. And they will be fairly priced - just like the camera.
Whoever buys a camera with 6fps and no phase detect shoots exclusively still subjects...
Want video specs, buy a video camera 🤣 every manufacturer kills it in one area. Bottom line is, consumers expect "the perfect camera" that shoots full frame 4k at 120fps and has a 60mp sensor with ibis and phase detect dual pixel auto focus plus has 4 card slots and a flippy screen all for 500 dollars....not gonna happen.
He's just telling us to be measured with our expectations, with any product, particularly one this expensive and new, we should all wait for the full reviews.
@@youknowwho9247 Who buys a camera that shoots 2.5 fps in continous and offers 120 fps in 720 without focus and sound.... in 2018? You know who I'm talking about. If not - you can watch Tony's next video ;)
@@sarfaraz.hosseini I agree. But for me - Who doens't carry high expectations for this camera cause I can see the shortcomings - I can also see alot of the features that Micro 4:3rds focused on that can improve full frame mirrorless cameras way beyond what we have right now. With high quality evf, IBIS+lens stability on top of pixel shift for the 24mp one. It will make the camera much more versatile for doing different things. Like pulling high quality photos out of 30/60 fps video. On top of the very best video specs out there right now. Now everyone hopefully can see the reason why Sony was holding their a7iiis back. ;D
Its getting really hard to know how to interpret such videos that present opinion on specs. Most of what is presented as fact on cdaf mechanisms is true for traditional cdaf systems but IMHO are misrepresented here as an issue with the s1/r as both use a different form called dfd. The latest Dfd uses cdaf, object detection, information on lens bokeh characteristics, motion vector analysis and now a form of subject pattern recognition to determine directionality and cdaf to track. There is an excellent demo on RUclips of a Panasonic engineer explaining this with a train going around a track. The focus mechanism in the s1/r may well be excellent for video. It would probably be best to wait until it is in your hands. Why weren't you guys at the launch for the s1r??? I sense from this video a little bad blood with Panasonic??
Is an f4 lens not good enough? Do we really need a 10 inch depth of field in most situations?
I must say that Panasonic is the best option ever for Sony haters ✌
Well I am a Sony hater AND a Canon hater but not happy that 4k/60 and 1080/180 fps are only in crop mode. And then the focus hunting.
Only if you want crappy AF and menus 😉
David Cartagena I'm just being sarcastic... Anyways this kind of discussion is not going to make anyone a better photographer tho
Great walk through!
A note is that Red Dead II has HORRIBLE HDR implementation (unless they fixed something lately). It’s basically SDR stretched to HDR, exactly the way it shouldn’t be done.
I'm quite disappointed about objectivity of this video:
Positives:
- big body
- we love Panasonic (but likely only GH5 and only for video if focus stays fixed)
Negatives
- way too many to list
(line skipping in 4k matters, but this 15fps video on youtube is fine ....)
I love how Tony reverts to his FM radio voice when he's reading the manufacture claims. It's sarcastic, but in a nice way.
I think the lens selection problem is a little overblown. I'm willing to bet that in the very near future, Sigma will announce that all of their Art lenses will be available in the L mount. Having the Sigma lenses available will immediately cover basically everyone's needs/wants as far as lenses go. Probably the smartest thing Panasonic did was join this L mount alliance. They can produce a few of their own lenses, but have natively mounted Sigma lenses, which are very popular, as well as Leica (which they've had a relationship with for a while) for the more status-oriented people.
Sorry Tony, but this video is more like 'virtual' reality. I suggest we all simmer down and wait for the full production camera to arrive. I look forward to seeing some real reviews after April :-)
