This episode was straight fire, not only for the end battle between Frieren and Aura but because of the historical tones of the flashbacks. Flamme was the equivalent of a great philosopher from the late Bronze Age or the Early Iron Age, by that time Frieren was just a young elven girl living in a small settlement not unlike the early celts and suddenly she gets put in all this mess that is gonna go for thousands of years as humanity advances as a society from this Grecoroman inspired time into the current late medieval/early Renaissance period.
You'll note that the clothing Flamme and Frieren wore during the apprenticeship were of classical Greek era. After Flamme's passing, Frieren went about training, collecting spells, and the settlement she chose to stay went from a small gathering to a walled city, and her clothing adopts to the time.
I like how the world is perfectly balanced around that. Giving humans great potential but much lower lifespan, while longer lasting races are not have to compensate with the time they got. Well written fantasy by the author :)
One of the most important steps to true mastery is to let go of pride. Pride hinders you, as that self-perception of perfection prevents you from attaining greater heights. Flamme could let go of pride, and because she could, she could hide her power. Demons cannot, and cannot conceive of a person who would. Thus, while Flamme and Frieren could hide their power, demons never would and would always be caught off guard by those who did.
But deeming all demons the same isn't on itself arrogance? "Demons only use words to deceive. Demons are arrogant and overconfident. Demons don't understand the reason to hide their mana..." This comes off as a bit conceited too.
