The relationship between Serie and Frieren is actually easy to understand: Just think of Serie as an asian parent and Frieren as the daughter who graduated from school with A+ in all subjects. However, instead of becoming a doctor, Frieren decided to be a historian.
"Your name Frieren? For next thousand years it will mean FAILURE. You defated Demon Lord? My 20 year old human apprentice killed his successor using only ordinary EMOTIONAL DAMAGE. In the meantime he started 2 jobs and become imperial mage AND doctor"
In addition to that, Frieren's battle strategy actually depends on anonymity and stealth. Yes she is powerful, but her approach to killing demons is more like an assassin. So if anything it's better if not too many people remember her. First Class mages are probably very well known and with strong reputations. The fewer people and demons know about Frieren the more demons she can cap from behind. And in the end, that's what gets results. That's why Frieren and the power of friendship killed the demon king and Serie never could. Everyone avoids the elephant. It's much harder to avoid the viper.
Serie didnt like freiren because freiren exploit the strength and weakness of magic. There are 2 types of mages. 1 is honing their skill and the other one is cultivating their mana. Flamme told freiren that basic spell is enough for modern mages because of 1 weakness. The huge mana consumption of defence spell. No matter how powerful the spells are as long as you have mana, you can defend from it. This is why freiren choose to cultivate her mana. serie doesnt like her because if all mages do this. They will not seek to learn other spell and serie will be left out.
Shes nothing like an assassin. She only conceals her mana in order to trick her opponents. Any knight or normal fighter can keep a few tricks up there sleeve. As a matter of fact she would always fight them straight up. The reason shes not a mage serie likes is because her motivations. She probably sees it as wasted potential.
It's more of an issue where if you're overqualified but you need the paper that says you're overqualified. Otherwise you're just a backwater mage by definition. Since it seems in the world, proof of mage qualifications is needed. I would think being Frieren is better but lol
@zaimanity8893 Nah. They just have poor documentation. That holy emblem should have meant something, but no, they chose to start from scratch by scrapping the entire system established by the Unified Empire.
Serie: You fail to pass the exam, Freiren. Freiren: Okay. Thanks for proving to me that this was a waste of my time. Serie: WTF?! You're not gonna argue? Freiren: I don't give a fuck.
@@incognitoroad3770 that was a sucker punch. Did you think he would win had they actually fought? Frieren was not even alarmed. She looks different when fighting those that are actually strong.
Fieren doesn’t believe she’s a first class mage because she believes there’s only improvement and more to learn. First class implies there’s a ceiling here, and she just sees clear open skies and stars.
She only bothered to enter the exam so that she'd meet another magic enthusiast, in that, she met Denken, & co. It's also ironic that her participation backfired, as it takes combined effort to fight an emotionless mimic frieren. Still, she knew Serie all too well, and it seems that there aren't many long living magus elves around, actually succeeding would lead to the one thing Frieren hates most, effortlessly learning new magic/spell, even trivial, is still against her character.
frieren seek the discovery of magic, not their militarization, serie seeks militarization and knowledge of magic, the ones who most use magic are elves, demons and humans, so serie get more diferent magic if the three are battling. Also serie know that frieren does not want to be a first class mage because she does not want it, that is why serie is going to reject her every time, not because she is not capable, just because she does not want it, also frieren is used to jump over the law to do her things, so maybe she will find a way to get over the wall one way or another, specially because she is known for being in hero's team who defeated the demon lord, so she basically has the ability to fight the enemies who are more to the north, because that was the place were she fight the demon lord.
Serie is such a walking contradiction, she talks about how useless the spell to create a field of flowers is,...while standing in a garden full of flowers herself... A place where SHE chose to conduct the interview. Lmao 😂😂 a tsundere grandma
Wouldnt say tsundere, she just doesnt understand her own emotions. She uses pure logic to make conclusions, and whatever it is making humans be themselves goes beyond pure logic.
@@sawe6051 bruv this the type of people to be like, yeah sukuna sucks he doesnt have high emotional intelligence, doesnt cry often. Yo shut up. Serie smashes frieren. She transcended emotions. Those are for losers to cry when they get defeated
@@sawe6051I like that we can see how much Frieren has grown as a person since she used to be this pragmatic and apathetic like Serie currently is. I really like their scenes since it shows their similarities yet also- their huge differences
she probably would go along with it, she allowed herself to be arrested when she attacked the demons in episode 8 because there was consequences to attacking a guard. she could have very easily gotten out. in the latest arc in the manga, fern gets summoned and Frieren goes along with her to assist. it's not like Frieren to be in a hurry about the stuff she's doing.
No. The reason is as Serie said. Frieren can never visualize herself as a First Class mage. Not out of lack of self-confidence or imagination, but because Frieren doesn't WANT TO be a First Class mage.
Serie remembered me on Biscuit from HXH, she wants to collect Diamonds and Jams and want to polish them to be More. In fact a great Goal when your lifespan seems neverending. The Scene where Frieren scold Lernen that he should not throw his life away cause Serie will remember him like all her precious Students was warming heart❤
frieren has been in the north before serie put the thing about having a 1st level mage in their team to go there, frieren just went there and defeated demon king with her team, then she got back to help human magicians to develop new magic and also to visit her friends, later she needs to go again to the territory that was of the demon lord, where it is supposed to be flamme and himmel in their "spirit" form, but this time serie just put a bump to reach there, and even if frieren is not allowed to pass because she is not a 1st level mage, she will find out another way to go there, like in other times she just looks like waits till those rules change, people in charge die, or just people recognize she is one of the heroes so they let her pass, she is basically a free soul, just attached of what she wants to learn XD
The title isn’t an achievement for Frieren. She doesn’t care for it, wouldn’t know what to do with it. It’s like giving the One Ring to Tom Bombadil, shes likely to completely forget about it in a year or so.
If not, her memory given out, it gonna be the collective memory of humanity that will forget the title anyway. Frieren talk about the regulation have changed every couple 100 years as well.
@@nathanfernandes7085 Damn, imagine instead of renewing your professional license, you have to retake the licensing exams over and over again because someone new is in-charge. Then you realize a hundred years is probably just a week or month to Freiren.
@@regencyrow1867 Also because I have a feeling Serie doesn't like to be called on her own BS. (Standing in a field of flowers created by a spell she claims is useless). Probably doubly true since Frieren let Serie's verbal shot just float right by her without a second thought and Serie knows she can't even bully Frieren with raw Mana like she can with everyone else.
@@joshuawilliams2660 Serie isn't really bullying Frieren. Serie wanted frieren to stand up for herself and have more ambition. The emotion Serie feels when dealing with Frieren is not contempt but disappointment that her foster daughter's(Flamme) greatest apprentice (frieren) has not lived up to her true potential. However if you asked Serie if she were to die who she would want to take over it would be Frieren without a doubt.
It's hilarious to me that Frieren knows that Serie's reasons for failing her are entirely personal, and Serie knows that Frieren knows, and Frieren knows that she knows, but both of them are just fine with it.
I like Serie. Such a complex and unique character who is borderline a god, of course very few can understand what she truly feels. I can’t imagine being that ancient, knowing what she knows, and have seen what she’s seen… must be such a blessing and a curse. ❤
Tbh serie is probably the best tsundere yet she seems harsh and never admit her true feelings and she knows that no one will understand how she truly feels Unlike any other tsundere characters not just insults their partners and literally abuse them physically and then either end up with then or get rejected Serie is unique though she has no partner nor she ever wanted one but she still acts like a tsundere a harsh but calm one at best unlike any with a short temper
A big reason that Serie has so much beef with Frieren is that Frieren is one of the closest people to potentially know how Serie feels, given their similar lifespans as elves and them both having known Flamme closely. Yet, Frieren and Serie are so diametrically opposed philosophically that they can't (or at least don't feel like they can) get along with one another. They are probably one of the few people who can sincerely understand/empathize with one another, but simply are unable to get over their differences to even try. To boil it down, Serie and Frieren are both socially awkward tsunderes who don't express themselves well (e.g. "I trained [Flamme] on a whim,""it was a mere 10 years," etc.).
I think this is a good example of two people who just think fundamentally from each other. It's obvious that what Serie is looking for is someone who already believes their a first class mage or has the confidence to stand their ground with her and push back. If you noticed all of the people Serie passed were already extremely confident in their abilities or weren't afraid to push back against Serie when she mocked them. Frieren however is extremely passive by nature, and also very set in her ways. Once she makes up her mind on something its very hard to get Frieren to change it or convince her she was wrong. Frieren was already convinced that Serie was going to fail her and nothing was going to change her mind, but the sad truth is that Serie wanted to pass Frieren. She wasn't mocking Frieren's choice of spell for no reason, she already knew what her favorite spell was, Serie was trying to bait Frieren into fighting back, to show that she would push against her but Frieren just refused to engaged. While Frieren was ultimately right, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy; she setup the circumstances that caused herself to fail and for Fern to pass.
but then again, there's nothing wrong with Frieren choose not to resist. Serie isn't a demon, so she doesn't need to resist; Although passing the test will grant spells, which is part of her journey, Fern's passing could do that for her. And finally, there's no need to prove to Serie. In essense, Frieren live Stoicly: live a life with minial use of energy and motivation. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Serie wouldn't have passed her though. She would only pass Frieren if Frieren lied i.e, if she said an attack spell instead of the Flower one. Serie wants Frieren to be a warrior mage which Frieren doesn't wish to be. I wouldn't call that self-fulfilling prophecy because Frieren wasn't wrong. Her true self wouldn't be passed no matter what
@@bluebird4614Serie also agrees with the sentiment that magic is and should only be used for killing. At least it is implied that's the case, by the people she passes and Flamme's comment that she cannot defeat the Demon King because she is a warmonger.
It's interesting that Frieren is the younger of the two because it takes quite a bit of maturity to listen to someone completely dismiss the value of something you told dear and respond, both verbally and emotionally, with "eh, your opinion on this doesn't matter, so I'm not going to treat it like it matters".
Hilarious how many people fail to realise that however much she dresses it up in fancy words, Serie is just jealous that Flamme was right about Frieren defeating the Demon King, & that Frieren is honest with her feelings (even if she finds them confusing) while Serie is not. Both Flamme & Frieren can read Serie like a book, & Serie knows this, which bothers her immensely.
And if you watch some of the interations with Serie and Flamme and Frieren, she doesnt make eye contact, and you can SEE she hates it, cuz both FLamme and Frieren are right. She is just a warmonger, and neither Flamme nor Frieren are. Some of the subtle things in this show are amazing. I love it so much
Yh I think it is also the fact that she has the opportunity to become very powerful faster as she has the mana and longer life gives her the opportunity to be able to but she spend most of her time finding the small things like turning grapes sour and the field of flowers which in the grand scheme are useless but to her they are meaningful and show the ppl she was with are on her mind and she values them , most ppl with magic want to be powerful but now for frieren the power is more of an after thought 🤷🏼♀️
Serie failed Frieren because she is stuck in her old ways. Like how the old generation is so stubborn and stupid that they can only hate the new generation's line of thinking. Serie, for all her power, is just childish and petty that she could not comprehend Frieren's goal of peace rather than warfare and power. Serie has no friends, only work associates or colleagues but Frieren has many friends and family in all but blood.
Frieren's too chill to be able to be First Class, throwing years of her time away on sentimental crap. There's nothing wrong with that, but the humans she's meant to be teaching (the whole point of Serie personally teaching the First Class mages) don't have that luxury, and such a mindset is actively detrimental to them. The fact that Fern turned out so well is more to do with her own talent rather than Frieren's ability as a teacher.
@@gabrielclark1425 eh, i think it's just a difference of philosophy. Frieren knows the grand spells and such (as we saw when fighting her clone), but she's also shown (and Fern has demonstrated as well) that the clever use of simple spells can do the same thing as grand magic. I mean, you saw what Fern was able to do in the first trial with literally just consecutive castings of Zoltraak to Ehre and the environment. And I'm sure Fern will grow into a grand mage herself. But she's only a teenager, so focusing on the basics first isn't a bad thing. But Serie doesn't have the same philosophy, having much more power available to her and an encyclopedic knowledge of spells. The two are going to differ on that.
"it was a useless spell that my master taught me, that brought me and my companions together..." Magic to create a field of flowers is the reason the demon king was defeated. Without showing a young Himmel that spell, he would not have remembered her and the Hero's party would not have existed. the 3 may have gone alone, and Firern states that "if any one of us weren't there, the Demon king would never have been defeated".
One of important stuff the story tell here is : Frieren doesnt need any rank validation at first place. She is already a great mage. She is proven. Her track record speak for itself. History speak of her feat.
after reading a ton of xianxia novels where 10.000 years old monsters (as in powrful, not like actual monsters with claws and sht) act like teenagers, it's a real breath of fresh air seeing characters like frieren and serie
Well you're partially right but,in xianxia novels they always aim for higher level so their state of mind is high and have high fighting spirit so that they can move forward to reach higher level that is why they have mind of teenage
@@26madhavanp87 nah, that's just because most authors just don't know how to write thousand years old monsters, look at er gen, his old characters are all great and don't act like teenagers, no matter how high their fighting spirit is, look at reverend insanity or lord of the mysteries, they are one of the best because the writing of the old powerhouses is actually on point, no matter how crazy and deranged they are, you can't imagine them as teenagers, unlike the many reincarnated upper realm sage emperor lord monarch kings out there that live for thousands upon thousands of years but still act like horny naive and frankly straight up crungy edgelords ...
From all other's reponses, we can see Series was looking for that DRIVE. The thirst to become stronger. The passion to become the top. But Frieren just doesn't have that. Frieren want to trust on others. She'd sacrifice herself so the whole team would win. And this is the biggest difference. Serie is all about self-preservation. Frieren is all about passing the torch. In many other anime/work, passing the torch is often the "right" idea. One example is Hokage protecting the new leaves (next generation of ninjas) in Naruto.
Serie is looking for ambition to drive magic to further advancement. Frieren is recognized as insanely strong but she prefers a different route, one that was taught by Flamme and Himmel. She never said Frieren was ever wrong. It was not just the kind that she was looking for.
I was impressed by how hard Frieren tried to speak Serie's language though. She tells Serie that the Field of Flowers spell allowed her to befriend Himmel and thus defeat the Demon King, and therefore the Field of Flowers spell was indirectly a spell for killing. Good try :)
Frieren obviously is stronger, has more mana and is more battle experience and adventure experience than most likely all of the other first class mages (tho serie said the first first class mage may have had a shot against her). Serie is older and stronger, tho arguably Frieren has had more experience with adventurers. Having said that, I think the difference boils down to philosophy between those two EXACTLY because they have different paths. Serie is about growing stronger and more powerful so she dislikes that Frieren is not as efficient and has not reached the full power she could have reached in her position. Frieren has been on teams with a party and been able to keep them alive tho, so her priorities are different. While she cherishes a spell that by chance led her to meet valued team members which defeated the demon king, Serie just thinks that the flower field is weak and therefore useless. I kinda think Frieren's point makes way more sesne than Serie, exactly because Serie seems to NOT have ever been in a group party while first class mages are expected to also keep their groups alive, so she doesn't value group members as much as Frieren but rather personal strength. It is also clear that she specifically intervened because she did not want Frieren to pass, the third exam could have been made hard to the point that almost none of the other candidates would have passed anyways, but Frieren would have passed no matter how hard the test since she is stronger and wiser than all the other test-takers, so Serie had to jump in as otherwise Frieren would have passed.
The only thing I would like to contend is that since Serie is older than Frieren and from the mythical Era. She might have had a party which passed away and chooses not to have a party again due to the pain. Frieren is her opposite.
Serie is driven by boldness, ambition and a quest for personal advancement. She thinks magic is something special that should remain in the hands of those who relentlessly push its boundaries. Frieren is community driven, she researched magic to protect people from demons, trained to protect communities from the fate of her village and values spells that are emotionally tied to her bonds. She sees magic as something that ties people together, which can be understood through studius rigor and advanced through the work of many researchers. They fundamentally disagree on a philosophical level. Its like Flamme said, Freiren is a mage for the peaceful era, whereas Serie is more of an ivory tower battlemage. So in Serie's mind, Freiren lacks any spark of passion and her goals are boring.
Frieren in the manga says that as a mage, she see no concieveable way of beating serie herself, though a skilled warrior possibly could within striking distance. Also serie was easily beating macht before her apprentice convinced her not too. Serie is definitely stronger, but she’s also philosophically a warmonger that only sees magic is mainly a tool of war
There's only one thing in whic I disagree. Serie didn't intervene because she didn't want Frieren to pass, she intervened because most of them where unqualified, but she still didn't want them to die because they are still promissing. And in Frieren's case, Frieren is the one that didn't imagine herself passing so, ironically, the immensly powerful elven mage is the one lacking in imagination, since Serie always follows her instincts. She could have failes Fern because of a personal grudge against Frieren (which she actually doesn't have) but her instincts didn't allow it because Fern is first class material.
@@guillemmadrigalgallud6306Yes, but I mean that the objective (to not let the others die in vain as they were unqualified) could also have been achieved with other testtakers. So that by itself does not warrant Serie to step in, they could still have failed almost everyone in there with other test takers too. The first first mage surely could also have come up with a task that was so hard that all the other folks couldn't pass. The one differential here is Frieren, that is the only one where none of the first mages could reasonably test, because she is stronger than all the test-takers. If it it was just about failing 10 out of that group then the first mage could also do that surely. But he couldn't fail someone who he sees as more qualified than himself. Serie is the only one who can reasonably fail Frieren, all others can fail everyone else if they wanted to.
I find the relationship between Frieren and Serie to be both complex and fascinating. Serie views magic primarily as a means to combat enemies and she has never let go of this idea, not even in times of peace. Who knows what kind of bad experiences she has had in her long life, but her determination is unwavering. Other, noncombat spells exist of course, but for her these are for conveniences that are of minor consequence. Frieren on the other hand is able to use powerful magic to fight enemies in times of war, but is also able to adapt to periods of peace where she continues to learn magic of different kinds just for her own curiosity. Yet, she is able to turn on her ability to fight when she needs to, as demonstrated by when she defeats Aura and her army. On paper, it would seem that Serie should be very proud of Frieren. She is her apprentice's apprentice and defeated the Demon King, and in this season also defeated 2 of the Sages of Destruction. However, I think the problem that Serie has with Frieren is that she wants Frieren to focus primarily on magic that is useful in combat and utilize her full potential to this end. She feels that Frieren is wasting her time pursuing "junk" magic and losing her focus and drive for what's really important. Frieren counters Serie by making a good point: She made a very good impression on young Himmel using the create flower spell, and following that butterfly effect it eventually led to the formation of the party that defeated the Demon King. However, to Serie this is just an anomalous event, just like she felt that the defeat of the Demon King was more the work of her teammates working with her in unison than primarily her actions. Serie's intuition would be that in future events, it is unlikely that these useless spells would again lead to anything great, and also that Frieren might be defeated if she does not have the support of good teammates due to her lack of focus on combat spells. Serie becomes even more annoyed when Fern turns out to be just like Frieren, stating that Frieren is already her master, then asking for a laundromat spell. Serie fumes and bans Frieren from entering any of her mage guilds for 1000 years!😂 So who is right and who is wrong? My take on it is that Frieren is right. There has to be more to life than just fighting. The world would be a much poorer and more ascetic place without the beauty and splendor brought about by miscellaneous magic. You cannot become so singleminded such that you let your passion devour you. That being said, Serie does have a point in that if you cannot defend your world, then everything else is lost.
To add to what you said, in the clip, Frieren voices her axcitement and curiosity about the new magic and spells that they'll eventually get to see, not because they'll allow her to destroy stronger foes, but because she adores magic in all its forms. Serie seems to see magic as a tool. Frieren sees it as art, with inherent value whether it can vaporise someone or not ❤
To be fair, there were multiple participants that were "strong enough" to be first class mages, however the whole point of her part of the exam is not measuring raw magical prowess, but rather measuring their mental fortitude and analyzing the way they think/act under pressure. The reason she failed Frieren has logic indeed, Frieren does not act/think the way Serie wants her to, therefore she fails.
I think it's funny that serie told frieren to not neglect her training, but, centuries after that, she still has problems with detecting mana while defending (a fairly basic skill). Makes me wonder if serie spoke about that specifically when telling frieren to train. Probably not, but it would be funny.
@@Facts-only69 Serie seems to know at least some parts of the battle as she mentioned the mana hiding trick didn't work on the demon king whitch might mean she was watching the fight from afar
I think serie was watching everything. U see she traced land's real body in an instant. She must have seen all battles of Frieren against demons too. It isn't a fact that she was weaker than demon king. That's why she didn't defeat him. As it was said by flame, she didn't like peaceful era. That's why she didn't kill demon king. @@4wheal
Although this sounds similar to the other comments, the whole idea that Frieren not wanting to get first class mage status is very in line with her character and ofc it lines up with Flamme's advice to her to not be recognized outside of her status as the one who defeated the demon king.
I dont see many of the comments acknowledge the following: it isn’t just a personality flaw on Serie’s part - she’s actively misdirecting anyone who comes into contact with her. For example, she talks about how useless mana suppression is, but has mastered it herself. She disparages her human disciples, but remembers every single one of them in great detail. She shits on the flower spell, but specifically used it in this scene.
I like to guess and speculate. Frieren stated that Serie's intuition is always right. Serie also knows that Frieren loves to trick demons. The demons definitely know of Frieren's strength and would assume she is the first class mage and not Fern. That would be the last mistake they'd ever make thinking there is only one powerful mage in the party.
Serie says the spell to create a field of flowers is useless, while she sits in a, well, field of flowers. How'd them flowers get there, Serie. Huh? Just askin'.
A spell for a field of flowers isn’t useless. It brings life to a barren terrain. Joy to people who experience it. And starts an ecosystem for wildlife pollen and growth to expand further. Serie only desires powers and control. Frieren and Flamme understood the beauty of life and love.
It seems like Serie knew damn well Frieren doesn't really care about being "First-Class" mage as those kind of title is nothing for her. Even without that title everyone basically knows who Frieren is and what she's capable of doing. Considering Serie knew Frieren for a long time and had an interesting relationship, Seire's expectation of Frieren is beyond what she expect from anyone else. Also banning her from the academy for a thousand year like it's nothing lmao. I guess we can say everyone know including both of them that Frieren is overqualified for this "title"
Serie is somewhat jealous of Frieren having equals to fight and advanture with and accomplished a feat where she thought was pointless at first but turned out to be quite meaningful.
Sirie is salty because she can't accept the fact that flamme raised a far better studen in her VERY SHORT life span than sirie could in her eternal life. Sirie is just a bitter amd jealous that the student she raised in turn raised a better studen than she could do, amd the cycle follows with fern who is raised by freiren. Jokes aside, i think sirie realised that it would be insulting to frieren's abilities by classifying her as first class mage. When in reality, frieren is far beyond that. They needed that title to be able to continue their journey, which she gave to them.
@@Facts-only69 where did I ever say that frieren is stronger than sirie, your comment doesn't make any sense. How the hell did you reach to that conclusion after reading through my comment.🤔

This it outrageous. It's unfair. She could show some respect to an albeit unconventional mage who gets shit done. Good thing that in this case nobody cares about this rank
It would have been funny if the Demon King was like allergic to a specific flower and a spell for making flowers helped killed him lol Its like the banana gun in The last story. I think it's sweet that Serie is taking care of Flamme's flowers 🌺 she calls it useless yet the very effect of it is clearly visible it impacted not only her but frieren and himmel and anyone els she meets sometimes a trivial spell can make the biggest of impacts no matter how small and or useless it seems to someone as long as there's appreciation for it that's good enough.
The first class mage title is really only worth it because Serie gives you any spell you could want for someone like Fieren who denied that opportunity long ago it really wasnt necessary. She really only did the exam to watch over Fern and have some fun
No. Remember that whatever party that wants to go to the Far North needs to include a first class mage with them. That was their main reason for doing the exam. Although, of course, for Fern it's far more useful.
Frieren is overqualified for the job. We want a first class mage, not an absolute legend and the best student of the most powerful humanity mage in all history, Flamme
Failing her because of her favorite spell and the fact she hides her mana is stupid, especially since she outclasses everyone youve probably interviewed in power and knowledge alone.
It's a common method of great teachers trying to wake up ambition and hunger in overqualified and gifted individuals. It's actually very smart. Unlike you.

Magic is supposed to be something beautiful, something that uplifts and doesn't destroy. That's what frieren believes and shows us with the bed of flowers. Opposite to Serie who truly believe magic is for greater power and destruction. Never will see eye to eye
She always acting tough and as if she doesn't care about other, but despite of her age, she's actually very kind and remember every students she ever had, she even remember what's their favorite spell, every one of them.
The identity of First Class Mage has its own responsibility. Frieren has no intention to bear it, even though she is over-qualified. Frieren had even rejected Serie's offer to teach her spell. It is meaningless for Serie to give Frieren a pass.
nah, shes not, serie is very egocentric and arrogant and very much like frieren she cant relate very well with human emotion, but unlike frieren, she hasnt made an effort to be better, she is content on being the boss and despite her honestly terrible personality, serie is wise, strong and has a lot of experience she doesnt get along with frieren for three reasons, she believes that frieren is wasting her potential, they have opposite personalities and she doesnt take kindly to opposition and rejection, which frieren with her carefree attitude and free spirit very much does almost everytime they interact
Let's just talk about the flower spell: 1. It has already been weaponized as seen during the second stage of the trial. So, it's not useless. 2. In the second OP theme song Haru 晴る, the first two lines of the chorus actually state that Haru is when the flowers bloom to blossom. The flower spell quite aptly sprouts blooming flowers out of nowhere. Note that Haru in Sanskrit means something to look forward to, which is also one of the main themes of the Fieren.
Serie talks about Frieren not even standing her ground when she mocks Frieren like it's a sign of weakness but I think it's the opposite. Serie is just further trying to get to Frieren but the fact that Frieren doesn't feel the need to talk back or defend herself at all is a sign of strength imo. She doesn't care about Serie's opinion in the slightest outside of passing the exam and even to that Frieren already knows her answer. So Serie really has very little power over Frieren and that pisses Serie off. That's why she is trying to get a reaction out of Frieren
I don't think any of you really understand the character of Serie. As an Asian, I can tell you that Serie's character is a typical Asian parent. This anime is based on an original story written by a Japanese manga artist. Basically, Serie is like an Asian parent. Asian parents basically have very high expectations for their children. They prepare their children's future according to their talents. If their children are smart, they prepare everything for them to become doctors or lawyers, if their children are athletic, they prepare everything for them to become athletes. And Asian parents are willing to sacrifice everything for their children's success. Many Asian parents suffer from economic poverty in their later years. Because they gave everything for their children. But when their children go beyond their expectations and hopes, they express great disappointment in their children. They get angry, or they get verbally abusive. Some parents even disown their children. Serie is more of a typical Asian parent. If Frieren follows Serie's wishes, Serie will probably sacrifice everything she has to make Frieren reach the greatest heights of magic. In the original, Frieren even says that she is a lousy mage who will never reach the level Serie wants her to and that if she were to fight Serie, she would be defeated in an instant.
Because the original manga creator of this anime show is Japanese, almost all of the parent-child and master-disciple relationships in the show are typical Asian parent-child and Asian master-disciple relationships. For example, Stark was not very good at swordsmanship as a child, unlike his older brother, who was a talented samurai, so Stark was completely shunned and discriminated against, as opposed to his brother being loved by his father. This probably doesn't make sense to you western eyes, but from an Asian perspective, Stark's relationship with his father was a very good depiction of what it was like in a strict Japanese samurai family. To a Western audience, Stark's father doesn't love him at all and is abusive, but to an Asian audience, his father still loves him, which is why he's even more strict with his children and pushes them to improve. In fact, if his father didn't love Stark at all, his father would expect nothing more from Stark, and he would just love him, but behind that love is a cold love that says, "I don't expect anything more from you." Of course, not all parents are like this. Some parents don't force their children to do anything, but simply love and support them.
Serie doesn't hate Frieren, quite the contrary. Serie still cares about Frieren and has high hopes for her, and even though Serie has ordered Frieren to be banned for 1000 years, Serie will always wait for Frieren to change her mind and return. If Serie had completely abandoned her love and expectations of Frieren, Serie would not force Frieren to do anything; she would simply treat Frieren with a nonchalant smile.
I have kept in mind the difference between American and Japanese views. Did you expect many people to get how parents in another culture act? People will react how they have in America, according how they see people and what they do, though it's always subject to change. I will say I'm not a fan of how some parents have a view of loving their children in a strict way, though my reasons for that is due to events in my past, that my anxiety kept me from seeing different views back then.
I think instead of "some asian" you may as well say "some european/african/american etc. parents" There is always families like that, i would argue that "i know better" is a classic for almost all parents no matter which country, race or culture you from
It's not even close. I have never seen someone miss so bad. Serie is wise and completely understands what it's like being a human. That is the hidden meaning behind the garden, the flower spell and how her ecstatic smile when she talks about flamme. The character is just too good for an average brainwashed human to comprehend. Frieren on the other hand lacks wisdom and experience. She only start crying about himmel when other people pressure her into it. She is the one struggling with emotions and they run her decision making. Serie is powerful because she controls emotions.
@@xypzs5123 Serie is wise but doesn't understand human emotions. The show portray human consciousness as a very high and underrated form of wisdom which frieren possess and Serie lacks. That's exactly why frieren could even predict the outcome. You comment is very biased towards Serie for some reason.
@@Marnige that's so incorrect. Nothing suggests that Serie doesn't understand them. Its a value system. She is only portrayed not acting according it and not having a desire to behave under such value system therefore you can never make a conclusion that she doesn't understand them. If she were trying to and expressed the desire to but had trouble doing so, then you could say that she doesn't understand them. Guess who I just described? Yes, frieren. So no, Serie most likely understands but doesn't care that much, meanwhile frieren is actively struggling to understand them.
Frieren, Flamme and Serie is the trio mages who changes the world upside down, all the three stood in their own different greatness and class. Frieren probably just only third to the most important mages in that era after Serie and Denken. Most of mages in the new era inspire by her and her party in pursued of magic like Denken and Wirbel, and I am sure other also had once heard her name in the history book. She will someday become the next living grimoire after serie pass or retired from her role.
I strongly believe Frieren likes the spell the most is not because it brought the team to kill the Demon king, it flashes back only to how she first met Himmel, not the team, and he also loves the flower spell. Why lmao, Frieren herself admits that she can't even imagine fighting against Serie, let alone defeating her. That's how big the power gap is between them.
@@chuuu4610 Spoiler: I thought her reasoning for passing Land in particular was kind of funny because for all the others she passed them based on their ability to stand up to her aura without fear, but with Land in particular she was like "Oh, you're a cheeky little brat for trying to pull a stunt like this. But it's gutsy in it's own way, so you pass"
She failed her because it's something Frieren doesn't really seek, like powerful destructive spells. Wouldn't make any difference for her to attain such status.
The story of Frieren doesn't end with just the show. Fern doesn't actually kill Frieren there, just an image of her. A duel between Fern and Frieren would be pretty balanced. Übel on the other hand could kill Frieren EASILY, despite being much weaker in terms of magic power. Necks can be cutted. Übel could even kill Serie's body which is why Serie let her pass the exam instantly. Though I doubt Serie would just die because her body does, as an almost godlike character she probably has some form of backup.

This perfectly explains it. Thank you.
🧠🧠🧠
Strange choice of words...
Do you mind if i spread them to others, young one?
Serie could easily destroy the Demon King, but a world without conflict would make it boring for her, and everyone would become weaker

It's more of an issue where if you're overqualified but you need the paper that says you're overqualified. Otherwise you're just a backwater mage by definition. Since it seems in the world, proof of mage qualifications is needed. I would think being Frieren is better but lol

Correction, she only sees half of it
No frieren dont become first class mage because she lack of ambition to be stronger in combat.
frieren seek the discovery of magic, not their militarization, serie seeks militarization and knowledge of magic, the ones who most use magic are elves, demons and humans, so serie get more diferent magic if the three are battling.

Serie is unique though she has no partner nor she ever wanted one but she still acts like a tsundere a harsh but calm one at best unlike any with a short temper
"I trained [Flamme] on a whim,""it was a mere 10 years," etc.).
maybe she's not a tsundere and everyone is just not capable of comprehending the true intention behind the character
@@ccasserole5267out of the two who do you think will get laid the quickest?
she isn't a Tsundere, she's just an asshole, there's no soft side here.

Serie acts like a child tho
Serie fumes and bans Frieren from entering any of her mage guilds for 1000 years!😂
So who is right and who is wrong?
Frieren sees it as art, with inherent value whether it can vaporise someone or not ❤
@@FreedomIII Yep their is a great amount of symbolism in this show. And it only gets better and better
>takes over the final exam because frieren's too strong
>fails frieren
serie logic
To be fair, there were multiple participants that were "strong enough" to be first class mages, however the whole point of her part of the exam is not measuring raw magical prowess, but rather measuring their mental fortitude and analyzing the way they think/act under pressure. The reason she failed Frieren has logic indeed, Frieren does not act/think the way Serie wants her to, therefore she fails.
The editing of throwing in scenes from prev. episodes was a nice tough, gj!
Flame taught her that spell. If Michaelangelo doodled on a napkin that would still be considered a piece of his
She did stand up to her indirectly, by calling her out for being wrong about the spell being useless. It found her some friends after all
I think it's funny that serie told frieren to not neglect her training, but, centuries after that, she still has problems with detecting mana while defending (a fairly basic skill). Makes me wonder if serie spoke about that specifically when telling frieren to train. Probably not, but it would be funny.
Frieren saved the world and defeated the Demon King, she doesnt need validation. Serie is smart enough to know that

For Frieren, this like going back to a tutorial level mission after beating the game.
She is a walking contradiction
I like to guess and speculate. Frieren stated that Serie's intuition is always right. Serie also knows that Frieren loves to trick demons. The demons definitely know of Frieren's strength and would assume she is the first class mage and not Fern. That would be the last mistake they'd ever make thinking there is only one powerful mage in the party.
I love how Frieren just completely ignores all her provocation, always responding "Yeah, you right." without a single care.
Serie says the spell to create a field of flowers is useless, while she sits in a, well, field of flowers. How'd them flowers get there, Serie. Huh? Just askin'.
Maybe she planted them and thinks making a field of flowers with magic defeats the point of a field of flowers.
@@someguy4405 OK. Possibly. And you can plant a lot of flowers in 3,000 years.
@@someguy4405 Frieren noticed that those flowers were created with magic, not planted normally
*Plot Twist:*
The *true* final exam/test was actually the mimic... And once again our thousand old elf failed horribly.

Are you stupid ? No body knows how powerful frieren better than serie , it's just the fact frieren is not as powerful as serie wants her to be.
Frieren: "Serie's intuition is always right."
Serie: "You're banned from coming back here for 1,000 years."
Always right.
Serie far outscales frieren lol 😂

This it outrageous. It's unfair. She could show some respect to an albeit unconventional mage who gets shit done. Good thing that in this case nobody cares about this rank

0:50 I think I’m in love with Serie in an off the shoulder dress/robe. She’s adorable and beautiful.
In my opinion, Serie should take into consideration that Frieren defeated the Demon King and give her the title of first class mage.
Frieren : "I appreciated your trophy, unfortunately I have beat the game in IMPOSSIBLE difficulty."
Frieren: “she’ll pass you no matter what you say”
Serie to Fern: “what is your favourite spell”
Fern: “spell that lets me see inside people’s clo-“
Serie: “you fail”
I think it's sweet that Serie is taking care of Flamme's flowers 🌺 she calls it useless yet the very effect of it is clearly visible it impacted not only her but frieren and himmel and anyone els she meets sometimes a trivial spell can make the biggest of impacts no matter how small and or useless it seems to someone as long as there's appreciation for it that's good enough.
I just got done watching this anime, and it’s so funny to me how Serie is Frieren’s #1 hater. Like how Sukuna is Yuji’s in JJK.
Serie said she finds a spell that makes a field of flowers is useless
Yet she has a garden full of flowers.
She does misses Flamme.
Frieren is overqualified for the job. We want a first class mage, not an absolute legend and the best student of the most powerful humanity mage in all history, Flamme

"I find it hard to believe somebody like YOU couldn't" *vine boom*
Serie & Frieren are like sisters the way they talk to each other
Failing her because of her favorite spell and the fact she hides her mana is stupid, especially since she outclasses everyone youve probably interviewed in power and knowledge alone.

Serie is difficult to understand.

Just a tsundere😂
She's "partly truth, partly fiction; a walking contradiction".
The identity of First Class Mage has its own responsibility. Frieren has no intention to bear it, even though she is over-qualified. Frieren had even rejected Serie's offer to teach her spell. It is meaningless for Serie to give Frieren a pass.
nah, shes not, serie is very egocentric and arrogant and very much like frieren she cant relate very well with human emotion, but unlike frieren, she hasnt made an effort to be better, she is content on being the boss and despite her honestly terrible personality, serie is wise, strong and has a lot of experience
she doesnt get along with frieren for three reasons, she believes that frieren is wasting her potential, they have opposite personalities and she doesnt take kindly to opposition and rejection, which frieren with her carefree attitude and free spirit very much does almost everytime they interact
Let's just talk about the flower spell:
Well Frieren is overqualified for the title and tbh there is no point giving a title to someone that doesn't want it in the first place
Her true title was great mage (equal to serie) and in modern era it was so obscure only senior first class mage aware her status.

I like the contrast of Serie and Frieren, Serie is by-the-books and a textbook mage, while Frieren is the free spirit.
What about for Ubel why didn’t serie talk to her?
@@gottago1885 Ubel's sympathy magic copying. Serie has too many magic spells she doesn't want copied.
You know how amazing the voice actress is when you realize she’s both Frieren and Anya Forger.
Frieren is capable enough but Serie just hate her.
Serie not only arrogant but also has a big brain so she's probably protecting Frieren by letting her remain a bit more unknown
In fact, if his father didn't love Stark at all, his father would expect nothing more from Stark, and he would just love him, but behind that love is a cold love that says, "I don't expect anything more from you."
Of course, not all parents are like this.
@@Noble.6 a cold love is a cold love, what is to be excused for how you would react?
I have kept in mind the difference between American and Japanese views. Did you expect many people to get how parents in another culture act? People will react how they have in America, according how they see people and what they do, though it's always subject to change.
I will say I'm not a fan of how some parents have a view of loving their children in a strict way, though my reasons for that is due to events in my past, that my anxiety kept me from seeing different views back then.
I think instead of "some asian" you may as well say "some european/african/american etc. parents"
There is always families like that, i would argue that "i know better" is a classic for almost all parents no matter which country, race or culture you from
Its like trying to get the “master” title for extra achievement but you already finish the game.😅

What Serie has is power, what Frieren has is wisdom. Serie lacks in wisdom because she doesn't understand the value of being human.
@@Marnige that's so incorrect. Nothing suggests that Serie doesn't understand them. Its a value system.
