Nothing gets me pumped like those early Rancid albums.

Salvation was my introduction to Rancid and punk and it blew my mind. I remember in the 90's all the trash talk about selling out was the thing to say about these guys. But I never gave a fuck because this band changed my life.

Can't wait for part 3! This is exceptionally well done. Imagine calling Rancid "sellouts." Knowing that they shared their money from their first record with Lars so that he could quit his job and join full-time is so wholesome and heart-warming. Punk rock AF.
Also, I love how during the show with Billy Joe there's the audience member who yells "Fuck Green Day" and Matt yells right back "fuck you!" Solidarity, baby.

Thanks so much for this. Rancid has been my favorite band since 1994. So glad they're still kicking ass after 30 years!

I was 13 wen I saw them on the Foundation skate tour in 1993. They absolutely scared the shit out of me with their mohawks and studded leather jackets. But they also sold me their record and I was a punk rocker from that day forward. I'll never forget that show.

Rejected was the first rancid song I heard thanks to TB2 snowboarding video. Their first record is the best because it's unfiltered and pissed off. Amazing poetic lyrics that made me so curious about life. That record is timeless for me.

This is quite the amazing documentary series.
As a huge rancid fan, it was an excitement to hear some history,
I have a huge knowledge base on various bands too so climbing up and making the documentary is amazing to see.
I think there's a few big parts missing and I don't blame you for leaving them out, touching on drug abuse is hard enough.
Especially in the youtube era we live in today. This isn't a criticism, this is more of an acknowledgment of "I don't wanna get demonitized"
Overall I call this episode a wrap mate, naration is good, video clips are amazing keep doing this, I will be here for 3 and 4 Much love

Just shows how warped the logic of so many punks was and continues to be. Rancid signs with an indie label and this somehow constitutes "selling out".

  • @xx7secondsxx

Damn Tobi Vail!!! Destroyer of hearts!!!
It pushes the guys to really go HARD and make great music to fill the time they have now they're not committed to a girl that FEARS COMMITMENT AND THE TITLE OF A RELATIONSHIP!!
I love Bikini Kill!! But that's Kathleen's band!! Shes RAD! shes the one whom wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on his wall. He thought it sounded Punk!
He didnt kno it was a deodorant!!
    LMADO!
    Kurdt was a Punker!!

Selling out by signing to Epitaph!?!?
Good GAWD!!! PUNX are sooooo toxic!
    Rancid NEVER SOLD OUT!
The world bought on to the band! They NEVER LEFT EPITAPH!! that's why they named that LP "... and out come the wolves" because of the success from LET'S GO! And the people trying to shop them! Tim was SMART and knew that leaving Epi would be a bad move!
When questioned "why not sign it maverick ot the others courting them?"
He.said he wanted to stay with Brett's label. His words were "Hes my friend and I trust him" in his funny accent twang!
Then jumping to HELLCAT his own label was only sensible!
Guess the lil kids (PUNX) grew up by then and their mentality was better. Cause they didnt say he was selling out by starting his own label and jumping from epi!
SELLOUT is a label for people that kno NOTHING ABOUT MAKING MUSIC AND WHAT GOES INTO IT!!!
theyd sell out if they changed their sound and look to GET ON A LABEL or when they did sign to a WB or Virgin records... they changed their look and sound.
Its foolishness that label tagging with!... unless you TRULY kno what it means!🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

And their record label was consistently bad ass. I used to really look forward to their sampler compilations, and probably still have most of them around here somewhere. There was always something great to find, and usually nowhere else you were going to hear it.
I think the fuss over signing with Epitaph might've originally had something to do with them signing the post-Jello Biafra Dead Kennedy's? I vaguely remember a lawsuit that I think Jello lost, I've never really bothered looking into it more because I'm not personally going to gatekeep shit. And Rancid almost single handedly introduced whole new generations of young kids to punk music and history, so I don't really care who they signed up with back then.
Also, Tim has been semi regularly putting out great collaborations on his Timebomb channel for years. Acoustic punk covers, old school reggae musicians, energetic live sets, and even what he referred to as 'punk hoe downs', where he brings in a bunch of other musicians from all over the map to play and see what they can all do together. It has kept giving me my fix since I discovered it.

I can't lie...13 yr old me was devastated when I heard they went to Epitaph. Operation Ivy was my god, man. Again I was 13. I still thought there was like, a punk uniform...lol. And Tim is who invented it. It still took another 2 yrs before started realizing what a dumb shit I was. Trying put a label or brand on punk. Op ivy will always b my #1. But I happily jam anything that I think sounds good...no matter if it's punk, rock, rap...whatever.
