Was lucky enough to be at this show, not only did we get this amazing opener but it was followed up by Yours is an empty hope, Ever Dream and Storytime… my god we were flying after that. We also got amazing versions of 7 Days to the Wolves and Poet and the Pendulum in the centre and Ghost love score, Last ride of the day and TGSOE to finish. What a musical banquet that was.
I'm going to see them twice this month! First at the brand new arena in my hometown Tampere and then in the capital city Helsinki. On the same weekend. Last time I saw them was in December 2018, which also ended up being the last show with Marko. No one knew it back then, though. I think the shows are gonna be spectacular. And I love how the fans have welcomed the new bassist Jukka to to band. Such warmth makes me so happy. And he seems to enjoy playing with his new brothers and sister in music. :)
First ,...Thank you for the shout out 🤘!!! This is one of three great openings from them ("Dark Chest Of Wonders", "Shudder Before The Beautiful" and now "Music" intro followed by "Noise" ). Shudder before the Beautiful is referring to the amazement and wonder we (The Travelers) should all feel regarding the natural world. It is all around us including the solar system and universe, which we are all a part of while traveling amongst the stars on this small spec of blue. This was from the Nightwish 2015 record, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". many of the songs from this record revolve around a theme of wonder and appreciation for the natural world all around us. As you probably know from other comments, Nightwish members are very much nature lovers and ponder deeply about the universe, how it works, and our place within its grand workings. That was amazing !!! NWSU 🤘😎🤘.
Yes, this was the show opener at Webley Arena. It was great. The voice at the start was evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. And he closed the show in person when he came on after The Greatest Show on Earth. Great night.
I adore the energy of Shudder Before The Beautiful so I'm glad you liked it and I agree with your assessment and the score. That ideal drummer you described who is a blend of a showman and a player with a technical ability and musical feel was definitely Jukka. We were all mesmerized by his playing, he was a nuclear reactor :) Pity he had to go but if he had to I'm more than happy Kai was the one who replaced him, he fits into the band perfectly, both as a player and a person.
Yup, this is the show opener! Great call! You may not hear the fans singing, but you can see it! A straight ahead banger for Nightwish. Only a couple little twists. I agree with your score of 9.1!
Anytime you give any song a 9+ score I don't care if that was THE MOST impressive you heard from the band. Because it is obvious you ARE impressed anyway! Cheers!
I was thinking 9.2 but DCoW, I think he was right was a 9.2. this was obviously a touch below in David's mind. Agree, no problem with anything 9+. He stands by both and tbe scores reflect his true feelings.
Tuomas has his jacket still on so has to be early, if not the first song of the set. He usually strips his jacket and hat (if he has one) as it gets hot playing.
Two Nightwish songs in a row I guessed the score before you gave it. So fun! I love how much you honestly appreciate the music so thank you for that. 😄
great reaction and review as always, thanks i was waiting for this score / reactionvideo since "Dark Chest of Wonders" ;) i am very satisfied with that score, thanks again David !
We have all been to shows where the band seems detached, kind of arrogant, or just disinterested in the crowd. It never happens with Nightwish, whether it's a small or big venue. I appreciate their effort everytime. A lot of their crew has been with them 20+ years. They are family, and care about the band and the show as much as the band does - they are also masters of their craft. :)
Floor Jansen wrote and released in her channel youtube his first solo song Fire in 2022 25 March, the song Fire, on her channel there is, with a video clip.
"You don't wanna open with your biggest hit" agree wholehartedly however, there is one exception to that rule. Queen opened live aid with bohemian rhapsody
I'm late to the party. Due to bad weather I was stuck in Atlanta's airport yesterday and I didn't have my earbuds with me. I knew I wanted to hear this out loud, not whispering. Great reaction I knew you would like this song. It was the showopener for the Wembley and I always enjoy it a lot. Now it's only fitting that you will have to do one of their show closers. Nice, I also enjoy this song because it gives good wibes especially in during morning coffee on hand. And the rants are funny as heck. Thx, see u soon again. And bring the Mrs to react too.
I knew you'd like this one given its energy (song-wise and the manner of the performance). Score is entirely expected, and I agree, given that I also consider Dark Chest of Wonders just, by the narrowest of margins, slightly ahead of this. The breakdown in the middle where Emppu runs, takes the wide stance and stamps his foot, and subsequently the cryo kicks in, is just stunning!!!! Power and energy!!!! Loved that reaction! Next stop: High Hopes!!!!! 😀😀😀😀 Oh yes! David Heretic..... Feelin' you!!!.... C'mon now!!! Here we go!!!!
speaking of patch try reacting to stargazer... tampere version... enjoyed every nightwish reaction you've done... first time comment from nightwish silent fan from the philippines...
I always like to guess your score. I predicted 9.2, so pretty close! Enjoyed your reaction, as always! Nightwish knows how how to open and close a show! At Wacken, it was Dark Chest of Wonders and Last Ride of the Day, and here Shudder Before the Beautiful and The Greatest Show on Earth!
Yep show opener, one of the best ive ever seen, and the fact that you cant help but do some kind of movement with your head, when Floor do the welcome, Wembley makes it even better, trust me i tryed sit still on this point of the song, i cant..lol i would add 0,3 more to the score, making it a 9,4 score, because of that.. and also because this works on me each time i watch it, but i can live with 9,1. no problem..hehe
Thank you David! As these are great show openers, there is also awesome show closer: 'Last ride of the day'. It fits the list too, not difficult, but actually kind of 'singalong'. Please check Masters of Rock version. Thank you!
I agree wiv u totally ..... sometimes less is more .....great reaction Dave..... hope u dont mind me calling u Dave ...... hows the misses not seen her for a while ...... totally love Nightwish so i always watch ur reactions ..... be nice to see u react to Amorphis another great Finnish band who often support Nightwish on their tours ..... keep rockin dude 🖤🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🇬🇧
Great reaction and perfect scoring for me. Thanks for the nostalgia as I was there for this show and I can confirm that it was the opener. Have you done Nightwish's Nemo yet? If yes then I'll search for it, if not then could you please add it to your list. Similarly constructed to this song but one of Nightwish's biggest hits ever. Certainly before Floor joined the band. Thanks again brother, stay safe and keep rocking! 🤘
Yes. That is how you start a show. Nightwish live performances are epic. I can't wait to see them live at the Warfield in San Francisco on May 18th. Here's their 2022 North America Tour schedule. Let's help them sell out every show. MAY 4, 2022 Toronto, Ontario, CA MAY 6, 2022 Montreal, QC, CA MAY 7, 2022 Lowell, MA, US MAY 8, 2022 New York, NY, US MAY 10, 2022 Silver Spring, MD, US MAY 12, 2022 Chicago, Illinois, US MAY 13, 2022 Minneapolis, Minnesota, US MAY 15, 2022 Denver, CO, US MAY 18, 2022 San Francisco, CA, US MAY 20, 2022 Los Angeles, CA, US MAY 21, 2022 Los Angeles, CA, US
Another great reaction DH! I gotta say you nail a lot of key points that some reactors don’t. One the thing you picked up on for me is how much the band mates invest SO much emotions throughout this song. Even the songs you’ve seen already reacted to and haven’t yet. No band for me in my lifetime has sucked me because of that. I’ve never seen NW in a live concert but somehow has drawn me in from what I’ve seen just from their videos. It’s crazy how they do that. Plus the stage show, lighting to big screen animation the pyro and all the accents on the music accents you also brought up. The songs become much bigger exciting and never the same throughout their concert. I still can’t get over how every song they perform is so different from the next. My opinion Is this band is up there the likes of Iron Maiden, Kiss, Motley Crue live…. It just sickens me that I may never see this band live living up in communist 🇨🇦
I asked for this on Dark Chest of Wonders review to take on this album tours opener. This is Floor’s first album versus taking on the set list from Annette. Thjs opener is the first song on that album. So this was a welcome to our new album kick-start. They also ended the show with the last song from this album. David left me off the requesters list but I will stick around any way.
For a similar (the same?) patch, try Stargazers. I love Marko's harmonies at the end and especially the very last phrase when Floor is doing a bit of embellishment.
Oh yeah. Wembly...great show. Like Waken better, but Wembly is good. Floor is. Any adjective falls short, and Marko with the harmony is just.....chef's kiss. I always liked the mini duet with Tuomas and Empuu as well. We should all love our jobs as much as Empuu loves his. And, as usual, our Valkyrie had this crowd eating out of the palm of her hand from moment one. She had them. But what may be the most impressive thing about Nightwish is the thought....the intent. What they do is intentional...there is a thought process behind it all. Every chord, every pyro, every lighting choice....it all has a lot of thought behind it. Even the set list. They rock out, and do so with intelligence. Talk about a shudder before the beautiful....
Hey man - I make the request list for you and don't even get added to the list??... 🤬😃 Ha ha. Yes the show opener for the Endless forms most beautiful tour, and also the album, with Greatest Show on Earth being the closer for tour and album. Same with Dark chest of Wonders which was opener for the Once album and following tours - so Tuomas clearly thinks of his albums in the same way as for a concert. Great review, enjoyed it just as much as you enjoyed the track 🤘🤘🤘 p.s. you gave DCOW 9.2 - so you're spot on.
I was already wondering, cause for sure you requested this one also. He has to do a closer (I call TGSOE a super closer). He'll love Last ride of the day. 😉
@@homegnome2429 ohh of course, I forgot about that. I watched about 3 songs and then I turned it off because it was Jen at the pause button and every time DH said something interesting she cut him off. That stream ruined some possibly nice first reactions.
GR8 reaction. Yes as you picked up on it was the show opener on the Endless Forms Most Beautiful tour. BTW are you going to audition for Lovebites? As you probably know they posted for bassist auditions!
Go for it bro!!!! Seriously!!! Go for it!!!! I'm rooting for you!!!! And as well as maybe a LITTLE jealous 👍😜👍 If they were looking for a 🥁drummer🥁 I'd fly to Tokyo and camp out at their doorstep!!!! Trust it works out for you and I mean that!!!! Keep Rocking!!!!🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘Love your channel
Totally understand what you're getting at man. Grew up listening to a lot of punk and stuff along those lines. You know, generally 3-4 power chords, maybe 2 or 3 others for the chorus, blast beats and adrenaline. Doesn't have to be written by technical virtuosos, no complex movements or phrasing. Just belt it out. At the same time though I am quite fond of the more tricky, complex music like tool, or the mars volta. Songs just dont have to be complex to be good.
So an honest question Dave. Almost every song you have reviewed from nightwish has been a live version and every time you gush and praise the showmanship. Would you drive 2 hrs to see them live?
Shudder before the Beautiful. The original was Shudder before the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. .😇😇😇lol Side note; ballerina tutu on a buffalo. ...LMAO 😂😂😂😂😂
As many here will attest, for me, this has always been my best show opener. :) I kept you as my reaction ender for today, having faith that you would see this for the show opener that it felt to me, which could have been in a different direction, but, I felt, that however it ended up, I would take the accolades, and or the criticism, but I was glad to see that you liked it, as I did, many months ago. :) . Cool to connect!
how can you NOT sing along?? i mean, once you get to know the songs, it's hard not to sing along, and in my head, i sound exactly the same :D aa girl can dream, right? haha!
If a show opener doesn't engage and excite a crowd, it isn't a show opener and your concert will suffer. Starting the audience off hot is almost as important as sending them home with a smile. Bands that do this grow rabid loyal audiences. Bands that don't break up or playing once a month at the VFW. (Not that there is anything wrong with the VFW, but playing at Wembley is a whole lot better for the wallet.)
A great concert opener for sure. I agree that song doesn't necessary have to be an intricate composition to be good. Same goes for singer's prowess. Black Sabbath are perfect example of that. Ozzy is hardly a mind blowing vocalist from a technical POV, but early BS is legendary. As much as I enjoy Dio's work I like listening to the early BS as well.
Okay, first things first. What did you do to the tip of your nose???? Emppu has a knack for running on stage. The larger the stage, the more he runs. Of all the NW band members, he is probably the most athletic. Blackbelt in Judo, so he moves pretty good. I have seen many videos of his mobil movements while playing. Marko is more like the dude in the "Keep on Trucking" poster.
Starting with a ballad… just watch the opening of BA 2018😀, the audience was expecting fire and NW started with only Troy on stage with a kind of ballad, just to trick the audience 😂
91,? beside the absolute pro-production and great Performing, it impressed you more then me as NW head back then;) but perhaps, bcs i am not really in my 30s like many Fans, so its ok:) STay Healthy
I feel that some bands (Nightwish, Rammstein)... use pyro, lighting and other effects as a part of the song, expansion of the music into a visual realm. All the details are thought of and have their place. A lot of bands use effects as a "visual noise" that does not enhance the experience. Or rather does not fit the music. And sometimes even clashes with it. With Nightwish that is not the case, all the effects really belong to the song.
Sad to think that most people think MISFITS (and Ramones ftm) is a clothing brand rather than a band you had to join the fan club of to get the shirt #FiendClub
If they couldn't get the mix any cleaner than this, they should have cut the keys/backing track by 10-20% to let the real instruments and vocals cut through better. Back in the day we always kept keys on a very tight leash, unless they had a solo, and wouldn't have dreamed of playing to a track. I guess I'm a little too old for this semi-metal operatic stuff. lol Thanks for the content!
You are correct DH, this was the show opener at this Wembley show.
It's also the first song on the Endless Forms Most Beautiful album.
Was lucky enough to be at this show, not only did we get this amazing opener but it was followed up by Yours is an empty hope, Ever Dream and Storytime… my god we were flying after that. YEP, this is the Wembley show opener! I can just imagine being in the crowd, and the arena goes black, and then Nightwish hits you with this beauty.
As a musician these lyrics hit a chord for me,
"The music of this awe
Deep silence between the notes
Deafens me with endless love"
That shot of Emppu at 10:29 AWESOME timing!!!

This and then going straight into 'Yours is an Empty Hope' is a great one-two combo to open a show 🤘
Shudder then Yours is an empty hope.
how can you NOT sing along?? i mean, once you get to know the songs, it's hard not to sing along, and in my head, i sound exactly the same :D aa girl can dream, right? haha!
I always sound great when the music is so loud I can't hear myself sing!
wow #1?
you absolutely must do the whole wacken to try /prove that 😁 you got yourself in this -you totally did 😃
If a show opener doesn't engage and excite a crowd, it isn't a show opener and your concert will suffer.
Good score!
Good
Okay, first things first.
91,? beside the absolute pro-production and great Performing, it impressed you more then me as NW head back then;) but perhaps, bcs i am not really in my 30s like many Fans, so its ok:)
STay Healthy
I feel that some bands (Nightwish, Rammstein)... use pyro, lighting and other effects as a part of the song, expansion of the music into a visual realm. All the details are thought of and have their place. A lot of bands use effects as a "visual noise" that does not enhance the experience. Or rather does not fit the music. And sometimes even clashes with it.
With Nightwish that is not the case, all the effects really belong to the song.
🤩👌💥💯
🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙

On a scale of 1-10, Nightwish starts the show at 11 and goes up from there.
Sad to think that most people think MISFITS (and Ramones ftm) is a clothing brand rather than a band you had to join the fan club of to get the shirt #FiendClub

girl???
If they couldn't get the mix any cleaner than this, they should have cut the keys/backing track by 10-20% to let the real instruments and vocals cut through better.
Back in the day we always kept keys on a very tight leash, unless they had a solo, and wouldn't have dreamed of playing to a track.
I guess I'm a little too old for this semi-metal operatic stuff. lol
Thanks for the content!
