I love long songs. I also love long movies. I’ve never understood why people want or feel that songs should be short. I want that Journey. I want the epic tail. I guess that’s just me.

David, an excellent review as always. To me, the reason for the length is the theme of the song. Imagine winter in Finland, darkness for months, stars shining, cold all around... as you move forward there are times of warmth, but in the end, you come back to a triumphant victory over the cold, entering spring with power and glory ( the shanty sound). The sons of winter and stars overcome. That view is always in my mind as this song flows from one feel to another finally resolving back where it started.
I'm surprised this wasn't a smash hit with you to be honest. But hey, I appreciate honesty far more than having sunshine blown up my ass. I respect content creators who don't just try to placate everyone. I've said it before; thanks for doing real reactions with comments and breakdowns and not just "wow guys, thanks for the suggestion, don't forget to like and subscribe, blah blah blah".
Agreed, it was an honest reaction, first time I heard this song thought exactly the same. Somehow it kept wandering in the back of my head, and now after maybe a year, Wintersun is my favorite band, after so many years to find a "new" band to steal the first spot in my heart its quite amazing. Maybe it takes a while to simmer.
On my first listen through I completely agreed with your assessment, amazing musicianship but a bit long. After a few more listens though, I appreciated it so much more and the length doesn't bother me at all now.
This song is insanely good, nothing but a 10, everything is flawless. These Wintersun guys are all at the top of the top level of musicianship. Jari is a real genius composer, maybe in the future it will be noticed by the rest of the world. Having said that, first time I heard it I thought the same you did. It takes TIME to process it all.
Holy shit finally. Jari’s vocals are really impressive if you take into account the fact that he’s missing part of a lung due to tuberculosis. I love this band, this is “wall of sound” done RIGHT. EDIT: not everyone likes the sheer amount of sounds in this, but as an ADHD haver this is half the reason I love this song, I can hyperfocus on picking out all the different sounds and the fact that it’s a liiiiitle bit repetitive makes it all the better, it really soothes something in my ADHD brain. Also, LOL at Kai with the towel at 17:09. Dude’s getting an entire workout in there. This song grew on me. It took me a few listens to really appreciate it, so I get you when you say you find it a little long. Give it a few more listens, see what happens. Hope you feel better about song length when you get to TGSOE, lmao
Great review! I appreciate you Calling out the time signatures. I love the metric modulation accent stuff. Really cool. The song is divided into multiple movements like a classical piece. Think of it as four short songs that all share same melodic themes. The lyrical content follows the same four movement structure.
Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow are also in this live rehearsal series and are more cohesive as compositions for me. This took some listens to get into, I like it but not more than the other 2, which are top notch.
This song look a little long on itself but when i feel for some Wintersun, i put the album (Time I) from start to finish. That way it seems short so i can put next The Forest Seasons ! I have to say that i am use to metal bands that do long songs. 14 minutes for the Viking Metal band Moonsorow, is like the average length to make albums of 4-5 songs.
Exactly my thoughts, when you make a 3 min song, ending may be 20 sec to 50 but in a 10+ min song i feel a 2min finale is fitting and justified as much as a 1 and a half to 2 min intro. And i am also used to that kind of longer songs so my tastes are vibing with this one
Thx for that reaction video of my hometown band Wintersun. Children Of Bobom is also my hometown band. R.I.P. Alexi Laiho. I saw 1997 Mercyful Fate here in Helsinki Finland and i see them again here next summer at Tuska Open Air Festival.

Those accents you mention is also what I love with this band. How many bands does this? I think they are a rear bread. By the way....most of the greatest music pieces in history are over 10 minutes and in many acts 🤘
Personally I wouldn't wanna miss a beat of this song but I get how it can feel a little long to some. Maybe check out their song "Time". I feel that one's a little tighter.
The drummer is current Nightwish drummer - Kai.... But Poor D ) I mean I am really a big fan of this song and I felt sad for D - watching him not really liking it too much, because if he DID like it - then he would have so many good moments with this composition. But it is is what it is - and it was obvious that the song was too intense and too-much for D. Sometimes (even for me) I listen to some music played by absolutely great musicians and there is nothing wrong with their play, and the music has everything, but,, it doesnt click. No idea why - but simply don`t click ) It happens many times with me and this time it happened with D. I think its rather misfortunate. But 8.3 is a good score from D anyways )
I agree with you. The first time I heard it I thought it was awesome. But now, it is starting to feel a bit too long. On the flip side, I get to see Kai on the drums longer.
No offense taken by your score but imho the song ending on that second point would be a bit cut short for how it feels to me. To explain what i mean, i m expecting a shorter ending percentage wise in a 3 min song but when one composes an epic above 10 min i expect the finale to be on same percentage of the song it would on the 3 min song therefore be like 1-2 min long and feel like a conclusion of a saga. And notice after second point they introduced the ending before reprisal of that sea shanty style theme then went gradualy from it to ending melody for finale. Takes 1-2 min and on such a long song does not feel like dragging to me but then again i m used to longer songs and don't expect them to be 3 min tibbits, usualy my choices are not very radio friendly cause longer than what average station would like. But i compare it to eating a well made 3 course meal compared to a burger.
Hellz ya bro, Wintersun is fantastic, Check out the Forest Seasons album, 4 songs with completely different feels to them. I'm pretty sure Jari did everything himself.
Yeah, this should be considered more like their business card - "this is mix of everything we do". The "Time" is a much better song. The live rehearsal from the same studio is a good version.
I didnt warm tothis song the first time i heard it. Definutely a virtuoso piece. I appreciated the skill though. Now, I adore it. Time, Land of Snow and Sorrow and Loneliness and Sons of Winter and Stars are my top 5 Wintersun songs
Great video, I agree, I usually have to be in a specific mood to listen to them, otherwise it starts to feel like a chore, my favorite song of theirs is Land of Snow and Sorrow, which is also one of their shorter songs. This song feels like a score, and got lost somewhere along the way in the writing process, their albums are great for long car rides though 😶
Had to chuckle a bit when you said you had issue with long songs. I've seen your thumbnail pop up on my list many times but this is the first reaction of yours I actually clicked on because when I see the length of your reactions I keep on scrolling! 😆 Its funny the reactor with some of the most lengthy reactions on YT doesn't have patience for long songs, and me a lover of long songs has no patience for what I feel to be overly long reactions. Perhaps we aren't so different after all. ...sorry for the overly long comment. 😁
Completely agree with this review. I've listened to it multiple times and i just dont feel the hype a lot do. It just feels drawn out to me and a bit, well, meh.
Ha ha you obviously don't know wintersun...Jari only makes long songs... Pretty much every song they make is a master piece...Jari is just a genius.... I recommend 'loneliness '... from jaris latest album...
I had the exact same feeling first time i heard it,,,,and the 2 and 3 time. Great track, but to long and toooo many sounds! You will sure get some comments to check out another track "time" from them...but again for me...tooo many sounds and to long - its way to much for me and to much to listen to...feel that my speakers cant deal with the sound...it feels to messed up.. They are great and sounds great...but...yeah,,,something does not make it my day and they will not come on my playlist.
I haven't heard this as a whole song in awhile...I've seen the drum clinic Kai does of this...which is right up my alley...dozens of times! One has to *watch* what he's doing on the drums to see his genius! Love the bass and guitars...I hear what you're saying about the vocals, David, but they just aren't my glass of wine. All in all, a well put together song. Thanks for showcasing more Finnish greatness!
drummer is Kai Hahto, current drummer for Nightwish. his drumming here makes his live gigs with Nightwish look like a vacation, though he always appears to be having a great time. the bass player here Jukka Koskinen is now currently playing bass for Nightwish, not sure if he'll be made a permanent member yet.
I believe, that song was like a little story, so it took some time for lyrics to be told. From this perspective it was not long at all, but I can see why it seems long from other perspectives :)
This band is crazy talented and have a lot of good things going on, but they fail to move me emotionally and leave me totally indifferent. I have their first 2 albums and rarely listen to them.
I agree with you David. These guys are all crazy talented but this song goes on a little too long. If you read the lyrics, this song tells a beautiful story. Jari has a great voice and I wish he would sing more than growl. He does both exceedingly well. I've seen a couple of other people mention that they wonder what you will think of TGSOE. The Greatest Show on Earth by Nightwish, which goes on for 23 minutes, is a masterpiece and an epic score. It does not suffer from repetitiveness, which you complained about in this song. I'm kind of afraid for it to come up on your channel. You love Nightwish but you will break a lot of hearts if you dislike any of their songs. You can't help but mention Nightwish when hearing anything from Wintersun. These guys all know each other, or at least of each purge. They both originated in Finland and share band members. Nightwish loves to poach members of this band; the drummer and bassist are currently also in Nightwish. I think this is the side project for Kai, the drummer. But for Jukka, the bassist, I think this band takes priority. I may be wrong. Thanks for your honesty.
Dave is spoiled by Tuomas's writing xD There's a very very fine line between repetition-and-length, and keeping-the-same-theme-and-length. This one just simply falls on the first side of that line.
