the singer (Jari) does everything in the band, writing and orchestrating, he even mixes and produces everything as well. According to him, some portions of the time album have literally hundreds of different tracks going on at once and this is only a 60% compromise of the full thing, because his computer just wasn't good enough to handle anything more. He also lost part of his lungs to tuberculosis while in the army and he's still singing like this.
Also, they are doing crowdfunding for their own studio and production of the 2nd half of the Time album so it doesnt have to be a compromise, and as part of that, they released an album with also isolated tracks from the Time songs. You can find these things on youtube. Definitely check out the isolated orchestrations of this song and "Time", they're basically already masterful classical compositions by themselves, without the band. I found these guys maybe 5 years ago and I'm still learning from them and finding new things, godlike musicianship.

Jari Mäenpää with the white guitar is the heart & soul of Wintersun. He's a genius composer & multi-instrumentalist. In fact their 1st studio album was just him & Kai Hahto (also the present drummer of Nightwish) with just some help from another guitarist. Wintersun's latest album "The Forest Seasons" is all Jari on all the instruments, orchestration, recording, mixing & production with only some additional backing vocals & choirs. Because the kanji on the neck of Teemu's green guitar means "time" or "moment", I might react to this song also: Wintersun - Time (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER ruclips.net/video/4UMwLxFNKS0/видео.html
P.S. For me the big four of Symphonic (power) metal today are: Nightwish, Epica, Dialith & Ad Infinitum since both Delain & Within Temptation no longer qualify as such bands.

My metal journey started out about 8 years ago with Within Temptation. Now I'm into all of the big ones except for Death and Black metal. But I can get into some melodeath on occasion. For me the Big Four in Symphonic metal are: The Gathering, Within Temptation, Nightwish and Epica, but you can also throw Delain in there if you want. Partly I pick these because they were pretty much the first bands that I got into and they are the most popular of the Symphonic metal genre just like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax (who after all this time i still haven't listened to), and Slayer (also have only listened to one of their songs)(don't worry I have a list that's about 40 ish bands long I need to listen to) are the Big Four of Thrash metal.

I try to discover new metal bands each day using resources like RUclips, Spotify, Bandcamp, Metal Storm, Metal-Archives (i.e. Encyclopaedia Metallum), Metal Kingdom, Soundcloud etc..
My favourite genres/subgenres of metal are (After the first three just a list, not a ranking):

What genre of metal something is is of course a point of huge contention. Most of those IMHO are not symphonic metal, but falls into melodic death and melodic extreme. Old In Flames are melodic death.
Symphonic would be more Nighwish, Epica, Delain, Within Temptation (and some new bands).
Wintersun with this song sounds a lot like new Skeletonwitch , which is classified maybe as melodic extreme metal.
But who knows, the best part of metal is the blending of genres.

But a big four of melodeath would be Kalmah and Children of Bodom, probably Dark Tranquility, then any choice of other bands like Soilwork, In Flames, Amon Amarth, At the Gates, etc. There are a ton of great and influential bands in the genre, so probably closer to a big twelve, lol

He is a musical genius and writes all the songs, and composes and arranges everything. He is an unbelievable guitarist nobody can sweep pick like him, know one. Incredible vocal range. He has stopped playing guitar live now so he can concentrate on his vocals fully but still writes all the riffs etc himself in the studio. Wintersun have to be one of my favorite metal bands out there. I've probably heard this song upwards of 100 times and each time, I pick up at least something I missed in prior listens. If you dug this one, I would suggest checking out the 4 seasons album they put out either last year or the year before, it's their most recent release. Glad you enjoyed the song bro. now time for some 🍺🍺🍺 Cheers dude!

The drummer Kai is nowadays the drummer of Nightwish (maybe because of those sessions and also because he os a very close friend and also teacher of Yuka the previous drummer). Also have a listen to the song TIME from the same series at this studio. And also of their album of the 4 seasons (like vivaldi???) and listen to Winter, Loneliness or Summer, The Forest that weeps, all very epic and to listen more times to let it grow on you.

The song/s of Wintersun like TIME and SONS OF WINTER AND SONS are awesome due to their heavenly POWER METAL and amazingly choir that put on the backing track even their guitar riffs and solos are unique. It was epic and powerful meaning lyrics that almost a storytelling. Actually I watch also their remastered vision and still as awesome on a higher level when they're live. Nice reaction 👍 on the video by the way and good analyzing to their epic songs. :) from 🇵🇭

Great to see and listen to how much fun you've got by reacting to Wintersun!
As already a lot said Jari (the leadsinger) is doing almost everything on his own in recording the songs.
I would hardly recommending Wintersun songs "Time" and two older ones "Starchild" (the first BIG track by them) and "Death and the Healing". To mention is that Jari was being leadsinger and guitarrist of finnish folk/viking metal band Ensiferum until 2004. As it looks like that you are enjoying this reaction a lot i would recommend Ensiferum as well - songs like "Hero in a dream" or "battle song" are written and sang by Jari.
A little note: Wintersun isn't the best example for Symphonic Metal; they have parts of it but in my opinion its not fair enough to mash Wintersun to this genre. its more like Melodic Death Metal with an extra portion of Jari's epicness :) but genre classification stuff isn't the most important thing :D
I'm excited for the next one.
    Cheers!

Along these lines I can make a great recommendation - the criminally underrated VINTERSEA - not many people know of them yet, but they cite NeO and Devin Townsend as big influences. I don't know if there's a Big Four of sorts, but there are definite standouts. Within Temptation, After Forever (Floor's old band!), Epica and Delain are all Dutch bands with definite Nightwish influences, so you could possibly start looking in that direction. But what I think you should rather be looking into is, "what are the European power metal bands that stand out?" You would be REALLY remiss if you missed out on Kamelot's Roy Khan era (especially songs off the One Cold Winter's Night live DVD [edit: as pointed out, Kamelot is a US band, though with a couple of European members) for example, Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle Earth as well as A Night at The Opera -- and Avantasia. The European metal scene is like an octopus: you've got Faroese folk viking metal that sounds absolutely weird on one tentacle, another is Estonian forest folk metal, then you've got Fenno-Swedes singing about trolls beating the #@%! out of priests in a sauna (see Finntroll's Bastuvisan for that one) -- and then there's Therion, who definitely would be in the symphonic Big Four now I think about it. Just see Blood of Kingu, Typhon, or Khlysti Evangelist off their official live in Mexico show.
The thing is, most of the aforementioned play with symphonic elements.

Talking about the top bands in symphonic metal you can approach it by having a look at the great Dutch female symphonic metal singers:
You do know Floor Jansen from Nightwish and you experienced Nightwish already (with Kai from Wintersun who took the drums over from Jukka)
Then there is Simone Simmons from Epica.
You have to experience „Sancta Terra“ from Epica feat. Floor Jansen. Another song to listen to is „Consign to Oblivion“.
A unique singer of her own is Sharon den Adel from „Within Temptation“. They are incredible as well. First songs to listen to might be „And we run feat. Xzibit“ (symphonic metal meets rap), „Angels“ and „Paradise feat. Tarja“ (the first singer of Nightwish).
Charlotte Wessels from „Delain“ is the next to explore: „Masters of Destiny“ is a must. Delain did a couple of songs with Marco from Nightwish like „Sing to me fest. Marco Hietala“
Anneke van Giersbergen (former from The Gathering) did a great duet with Sharon den Adel: Within Temptation „Somewhere“
Another symphonic metal band to mention is Xandria from Germany. They had for some time another awesome Dutch singer: Dianne van Giersbergen. Try „Nightfall“.

Lol, first time i heard this song, i couldn't breathe. I just stared wiv my mouth open and felt like a fish on dry land, gasping for a breath. Jeez!
If i remember correctly there are +1500 layers or tracks or whatever they are called in this song. So there's a lot going on indeed!
Seen them play live twice and they sound just as tight as here. With even more emotion! As ppl have already told you Jari (Mäenpää, white Ibanez) dropped off playing guitar live and Teemu (Mäntysaari, green Ibanez) has taken his spot. Teemu's slot is now played by Asim Searah. Also Kai has been so busy wiv Nw that Ws has done their gigs wiv 2-3 different drummers. Last year they toured US and Can with NeObliviscaris.
Teemu is also a highly appreciated guitar teacher.
My favourite song from the Time album is Land of snow and sorrow. To me it's sound is ancient finnish lullaby -like. I imagine it would sound magical played wiv a kantele (traditional finnish string instrument made from wood) or two. If you decide to take a look at it there's a vid of it from this same reherseals thing.
Oh, and the bassist is called Jukka Koskinen.

I would place Wintersun more into the (Finnish) Melodic Death Metal genre. One of my top favorites. They are kind of the very rare fine wine, where you have to train your taste buds before you really appreciate the full flavor. So nothing for beginners ^^ My top Melodic Death Metal bands (as a rough definition) from Finland are: Wintersun, Insomnium, Ensiferum, Amorphis, Omnium Gatherum, Children of Bodom, Kalmah, Brymir, Finntroll...might miss one or the other. From Sweden: Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Soilwork, At The Gates.

    Few thoughts I had:
    1. FInland is NOT actually known for Symphonic Metal even though Nightwish is our best selling band. Our poison of choice is pretty much Melodic Death Metal. That's also in vogue in Sweden and Swedish bands have been huge influence to finnish bands. Finnish music is usually more melancholic compared to Swedish. Examples of Finnish Melo Death: Sentenced (gone the way of the dodo, still influences newer bands), Amorphis (has gone through couple of styles over the years, still active after 30 years, often uses Finnish national epic Kalevala as an inspiration for songs) and for newer generation Insomnium.
2.Confusion between Song of winter and Stars and Time might come from the fact that both are part of "Sonic pump Studios trilogy" and someone probably had a brainfart while suggesting two different songs. They played 3 songs in during that live rehearsal @Sonic Pump Studios. "Song of winter and Stars", "Time" and "Land of Snow and Sorrow". Both Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow are good candidates for reaction by the way. Hint, hint. Nudge, Nudge.
    3. Those hidden tracks almost made me shat myself couple of times as teen. I was reading while listening either Kotiteollisuus or Finntroll. Well the album ended and as I was reading I sat in silence for something like 5-10min until hidden track started with something like "URAAAAAAA" and I dropped my book. As a side note Finntroll is kinda intresting band. Finnish band but they sing in Swedish because original singer was bilingual and thought that Swedish sounds more trollish.
And lastly reaction wishes: Insomnium incorporates many elements that are found in typical Finnish metal, so lets go with Insomnium - While we sleep. Or if you would like a 7min "Visit Finnland" travel add then Insomnium - Heart like a grave.
Day cannot also be complete without some Metal Polka so... Finntroll - Under Bergets Rot

To me Nightwish and Epica are the Big 2 of symphonic metal but there's no agreement really. The reason I pick those though is because they represent good pillars to reference in the wide wide sea of variation within the subgenre. It also helps that both bands are very good. Nightwish does a good job of blending classical, metal and folk elements and many bands in the neighborhood of this subgenre are some combination therein. Epica is a good reference because they're one of the few bands that utilize an operatic frontwoman, a choir and an orchestra. Most bands in the neighborhood of this genre utilize 1-2 of those but few manage to use all 3 well. I also like them as reference points because they both excel at controlling the atmosphere of a song. Another good reference point is Dimmu Borgir for the darker heavier end of the genre but that stuff isn't really my style so I can't speak intelligently about them.

I don't think there are big 4 or something like that. But if we talk about Symphonic metal there are some big names. Over all Nightwish... then Blind Guardian, Avantasia, Sonata Arcitca, Epica, Sirenia, Leaves Eye, Wintersun, Within Temptation...
But if you talk about a more generic metal... Finnland is the cradle of the best metal (epic, symphonic and folk). Some of them are: Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Battle Beast, Ensiferum, KorpiKlaani... Those are only few of them (and it's a matter of personal taste)... but there's a lot to talk about. You're getting into a huge world...
My favourote, anyway, are Nightwish, Blind Guardian, old Sonata Arctica and Within Temptation...

If you want to experience their more straightforward style, listen to the first album. There's not a bad song on it but Winter Madness is the obvious recommendation.
