  • This story tells how, 50 years before a historic jump from space, an Air Force captain jumped from nearly the same distance but with a lot less technology to help ensure Air Force Pilots could safely eject from unimaginable altitudes. See more stories at airforce.com/americanairmen.

I love his humility in using the word "we" repeatedly instead of "I." Such an impressive feat!

Hands down, especially in 1960. Joe Kittinger is on of the bravest men in the world.Up there with Chuck Yeager and Alex Honnald. Inspirations to human kind. Mind blowing feats of bravery.

      Yuri Gagarin.
      Alan Shepard.
      Neil Armstrong.
      Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
      Michael Collins.
      Et Al.
And their extreme achievements in human history, that are unlikely to ever be surpassed. Goes to show what humanity can accomplish with their efforts instead of actual war.

R.I.P. Col Joe.... I had the honor to take a biplane ride (along with my wife) with Joe at the controls back in the early 90's.He was a true hero and a historically brave American (Not to mention his 11 months at the Hanoi Hilton... )

2:20. His right hand was probably still numb from the descent

1960, highest parachuting jump (102,800 ft. or 20 miles, 31km) and the first man to break the sound barrier without an aircraft.

Rip Col Kittinger. I used to say ...
Three things of man visible from orbit.
The great wall of China and Joe Kittinger's balls.

In 1969 three men went to the moon, landed their rocket backwards on it, and took a stroll around. Some others went back and drove their late model electric cars around on it, then played some golf. Worlds most high tech golf cart race was a missed opportunity.

Col. Kittinger jumped from 102,800 ft. Technically space. If the president had any honor at all he would award the Colonel the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
