It basically says right, we have this ridiculously hard concept to try and explain to these school kids, rainbows for instance, or gravity, or how light works, but we have to put it in a way that they can begin to understand. So, what we will do is essentially lie. We will dumb it down. Way down. Then, when they get a bit older, we will tell them a bit more detail. And, if they go all the way to university we will give them some more complex details. To put this into context my son is currently studying physics at university. Even at his level of education Quantum Physics is taught this way, with lots of “because it is” facts that if they go up a level to PhD they might get to understand. What it doesn’t mean is everything we are taught is made up.

Russ Fye Yes you are. Buoyancy is a net vector that can opposite that of gravity. That’s how planes fly as do birds (although the mechanical action is different). Same is true for how clouds form. Rising air is buoyant but doesn’t rise infinitely, it rises until it’s buoyancy vector is equal to that of gravity downward vector. That’s why clouds have varying heights based on how buoyant the air is.

Buoyancy is a force, one I deal with daily as a meteorologist. However gravity and buoyancy are not mutually exclusive. Example: Clouds. Upward rising buoyant air creates clouds, until the upward force is equal to the downward force of gravity which is know as the LCL. Eventually the cloud becomes to moisture laden and gravity net vector down is stronger than buoyancy net vector up.
We see gravity and buoyancy fight daily in thunderstorms. That’s how hail forms. The updraft tosses the hail stone up into the cloud over and over until it reaches equal force with gravity due to size and falls.

I have also used my $5,000 transit over a 10 mile span of water and it has never been more then 2 inches different. Please go to the beach and set up a transit at sea level and go as far as you want to in any direction.Water is always level. We have used water levels to build for at least a thousand years and no issues, but you are telling me that in a glass of water no wider then 4 inches that it's not level. Helium and hydrogen ARE impacted by gravity, but their buoyancy when compared to air is high. Therefore the balloon can go upwards in spite of gravity, it's certainly effected by it. By the same measure, why can you grab said balloon and stop it from rising? Because, like gravity, you are exerted a net downward force, or vector because it has direction, that is in excess of the upward buoyancy.

Benji Hunter Foucault Pendulums are the classic experiment to demonstrate the earths rotation. They are set up all around the world and based on the Coriolis effect. There's no working explanation for their behavior on a flat earth either. Not even if that flat earth would rotate itself. It can only work the way it does if the earth is indeed a rotating sphere.

Now, let's assume you are planning to make an organization that will include all the world's countries so you can discuss world issues etc. Now you want to select a logo that portrays the whole world. Will you use the spherical earth which shows a few countries or a flat projection that shows all the countries? All pictures of the distant cosmos are computer assisted. Hmm, I was first told about the flat Earth movement about 6 months ago...at first I just ignored it, not because I thought it was too stupid to devote time to it- I am always at least open to learning something new in any subject (even if it seems ridiculous at first- that is how I gain different perspectives- it's a good thing)- my reasoning was, after considering it for a moment, I simply didn't think that we could prove anything- neither a spherical Earth nor a flat one. I am a native of the United States and, like everyone else here (and in other developed countries), I too was raised in the school system and taught all the traditional science relating to our world. Therefore, I don't need people against flat Earth repeating stuff I already learned- curvature, rotation, orbits, gravity, space exploration, etc.- I am already familiar with all that. Then, when I started reading and watching information about flat Earth, some of the arguments made objective sense. Notice I write "objective" sense- obviously, everyone is biased, but it seems that whenever some so-called "established" fact is questioned, a majority of people immediately dismiss those few who question it as ignorant, subversive, heretical, non-conformist, etc. without even considering their perspective. Me personally- I question everything- regardless of whether it be long-established or newly-proposed. 6 months later, after viewing both sides, I personally cannot decide definitively if I believe our world is a spinning ball or a motionless disc. What I can say is that, interestingly, when one stops to consider both sides, the flat Earth arguments seem to be more easily understandable from an observational point of view- i.e. we cannot feel Earth's movement, we cannot see curvature, we cannot reproduce non-level masses of water, etc. Of course, all those aspects can be explained by scientific theories (gravity, refraction, regularity, etc.), as they long have been, but, in the end, if one wishes to take a position, it requires a certain degree of faith either way. I compare it to religion- Christians, for example, believe that God created the world in 6 days, and came to Earth in human form- Jesus Christ- by means of immaculate conception, performed miracles, was tortured and executed, and rose from the dead, and if we accept this and strive to live by His teachings, we will achieve salvation in paradise. Now objectively, to non-Christians, all that may seem like nonsense (because they didn't observe it), but to Christians, it is sacred truth. However, in the end, who cares? Some people believe one thing, others believe something else. Same situation here, a majority of people believe the Earth is a rotating, orbiting sphere, shooting through the galaxy within an ever-expanding universe, others believe it is flat, stationary and at the center of existence. Both sides present their own evidence which contradicts the other side, but so what? Both sides' arguments require significant faith, so we don't need to badmouth each other and make the other side feel judged or inferior. Believe it or not, it is perfectly fine to just calmly listen to someone tell you what they have discovered, and then you can decide whether or not you wish to accept it for yourself also. If you do, then great, and if you don't, also great- it is okay to agree to disagree. I have some friends (most) who believe the Earth is spherical, and others who believe it is flat- I love them all the same. Based on some of these videos and the comments on them, it seems that some globe-Earthers believe that flat-Earthers don't even deserve to live. Would those same people disown family and friends simply because they might not share their way of thinking? Would those same people advocate genocide against people who don't share their religion? You can choose to take a side or to remain neutral, but seriously- there is no need to be rude and insulting.
It's not that flat earthers don't deserve to live, it's that their position is untenable. They're unwilling to compare predictions based on their model to simple observations that anyone can make. It is possible - and relatively simple (and easy) - to gather relevant observations. All it takes is a stick, and a compass (or a knowledge of which way south, east, and west are. Let me explain. We have a spring equinox approaching. On the equinox, everywhere on earth, the sun will appear to rise due east, and set due west. Figure out your latitude. Subtract that number from 90. Push a stick into the ground at that angle, pointing directly south. At noon (solar noon), that stick will not cast a shadow. The tip of the stick's shadow will trace a straight line (on the equinox). These things are predictions based on the heliocentric model. On the flat earth model where the earth is a disk with a rotating sun above it, things are quite different. The sun will appear to rise somewhere in the northeast and set somewhere in the northwest. The stick's shadow (if it disappears at noon) will trace out a semi-circle. These are the predictions based on the flat earth model. If you're uncertain about the shape of the earth, I'd strongly recommend taking a small amount of time on March 20th, and make some semi-careful observations yourself. No need for debate, no need to rely on anyone else's opinions. You can find out for yourself.

I would like to try that experiment you suggested with a flat-Earther friend of mine- I will look into it. With that being said, may I ask you if you have carried out that experiment yourself? I ask because it seems that those predicted observations would not actually be as you describe- because whether the Earth is a globe rotating eastward or a stationary disc with the sun travelling clockwise above it, both models would result in an apparent east-oriented sunrise and a west-oriented sunset, would they not? After all, a globe and a disc are both round, the difference is that the former is spherical (i.e. curved three-dimensionally) while the latter has a planar surface. In addition, the Earth is still very big regardless of it's shape, so the sun, whether it be a gigantic star 93,000,000 miles away or a more local much smaller light source circling above would give similar perceptions, no? Anyway, as I wrote in my previous comment, in the end, either model requires a significant amount of faith, and the shape of the Earth, whatever it is, does not really impact my daily life in a big way. Please don't think that I am trying to win against you or disprove you- I simply ask questions because I wish to understand both sides better. On to your question - would the sun appear to be the same in both models? I don't believe so. The sun rises in a different place every day, throughout the world. It's furthest to the north on winter solstice, and begin rising further and further south until summer solstice, when it then begins rising further to the north every day. On a flat earth, with the sun going around in a circle overhead, the sun would only appear to rise directly east and set directly west at some particular altitude, and that altitude would be different day to day. It basically says right, we have this ridiculously hard concept to try and explain to these school kids, rainbows for instance, or gravity, or how light works, but we have to put it in a way that they can begin to understand. So, what we will do is essentially lie. We will dumb it down. Way down. Then, when they get a bit older, we will tell them a bit more detail. And, if they go all the way to university we will give them some more complex details.
To put this into context my son is currently studying physics at university. Even at his level of education Quantum Physics is taught this way, with lots of “because it is” facts that if they go up a level to PhD they might get to understand.

Russ Fye Yes you are. Buoyancy is a net vector that can opposite that of gravity. That’s how planes fly as do birds (although the mechanical action is different). Same is true for how clouds form. Rising air is buoyant but doesn’t rise infinitely, it rises until it’s buoyancy vector is equal to that of gravity downward vector. That’s why clouds have varying heights based on how buoyant the air is.

Buoyancy is a force, one I deal with daily as a meteorologist. However gravity and buoyancy are not mutually exclusive. Example: Clouds. Upward rising buoyant air creates clouds, until the upward force is equal to the downward force of gravity which is know as the LCL. Eventually the cloud becomes to moisture laden and gravity net vector down is stronger than buoyancy net vector up.
We see gravity and buoyancy fight daily in thunderstorms. That’s how hail forms. The updraft tosses the hail stone up into the cloud over and over until it reaches equal force with gravity due to size and falls.

Helium and hydrogen ARE impacted by gravity, but their buoyancy when compared to air is high. Therefore the balloon can go upwards in spite of gravity, it's certainly effected by it. By the same measure, why can you grab said balloon and stop it from rising? Because, like gravity, you are exerted a net downward force, or vector because it has direction, that is in excess of the upward buoyancy.

Now, let's assume you are planning to make an organization that will include all the world's countries so you can discuss world issues etc. Now you want to select a logo that portrays the whole world. Will you use the spherical earth which shows a few countries or a flat projection that shows all the countries?
All pictures of the distant cosmos are computer assisted. Their visible light spectrum is not bright enough for our eyes or cameras. Some of them you can see, the ones in our galaxy. Some we see through other spectrum Microwave/UV/other radio waves etc. Check some amateur astronomer's videos, they will explain how they do it.

Hmm, I was first told about the flat Earth movement about 6 months ago...at first I just ignored it, not because I thought it was too stupid to devote time to it- I am always at least open to learning something new in any subject (even if it seems ridiculous at first- that is how I gain different perspectives- it's a good thing)- my reasoning was, after considering it for a moment, I simply didn't think that we could prove anything- neither a spherical Earth nor a flat one. I am a native of the United States and, like everyone else here (and in other developed countries), I too was raised in the school system and taught all the traditional science relating to our world. Therefore, I don't need people against flat Earth repeating stuff I already learned- curvature, rotation, orbits, gravity, space exploration, etc.- I am already familiar with all that. Then, when I started reading and watching information about flat Earth, some of the arguments made objective sense. Notice I write "objective" sense- obviously, everyone is biased, but it seems that whenever some so-called "established" fact is questioned, a majority of people immediately dismiss those few who question it as ignorant, subversive, heretical, non-conformist, etc. without even considering their perspective. Me personally- I question everything- regardless of whether it be long-established or newly-proposed. 6 months later, after viewing both sides, I personally cannot decide definitively if I believe our world is a spinning ball or a motionless disc. What I can say is that, interestingly, when one stops to consider both sides, the flat Earth arguments seem to be more easily understandable from an observational point of view- i.e. we cannot feel Earth's movement, we cannot see curvature, we cannot reproduce non-level masses of water, etc. Of course, all those aspects can be explained by scientific theories (gravity, refraction, regularity, etc.), as they long have been, but, in the end, if one wishes to take a position, it requires a certain degree of faith either way. I compare it to religion- Christians, for example, believe that God created the world in 6 days, and came to Earth in human form- Jesus Christ- by means of immaculate conception, performed miracles, was tortured and executed, and rose from the dead, and if we accept this and strive to live by His teachings, we will achieve salvation in paradise. Now objectively, to non-Christians, all that may seem like nonsense (because they didn't observe it), but to Christians, it is sacred truth. However, in the end, who cares? Some people believe one thing, others believe something else. Same situation here, a majority of people believe the Earth is a rotating, orbiting sphere, shooting through the galaxy within an ever-expanding universe, others believe it is flat, stationary and at the center of existence. Both sides present their own evidence which contradicts the other side, but so what? Both sides' arguments require significant faith, so we don't need to badmouth each other and make the other side feel judged or inferior. Believe it or not, it is perfectly fine to just calmly listen to someone tell you what they have discovered, and then you can decide whether or not you wish to accept it for yourself also. If you do, then great, and if you don't, also great- it is okay to agree to disagree. I have some friends (most) who believe the Earth is spherical, and others who believe it is flat- I love them all the same. Based on some of these videos and the comments on them, it seems that some globe-Earthers believe that flat-Earthers don't even deserve to live. Would those same people disown family and friends simply because they might not share their way of thinking? Would those same people advocate genocide against people who don't share their religion? You can choose to take a side or to remain neutral, but seriously- there is no need to be rude and insulting.
It's not that flat earthers don't deserve to live, it's that their position is untenable. They're unwilling to compare predictions based on their model to simple observations that anyone can make.
It is possible - and relatively simple (and easy) - to gather relevant observations. All it takes is a stick, and a compass (or a knowledge of which way south, east, and west are.
Let me explain. We have a spring equinox approaching.
On the equinox, everywhere on earth, the sun will appear to rise due east, and set due west. Figure out your latitude. Subtract that number from 90. Push a stick into the ground at that angle, pointing directly south. At noon (solar noon), that stick will not cast a shadow. The tip of the stick's shadow will trace a straight line (on the equinox).
These things are predictions based on the heliocentric model.
On the flat earth model where the earth is a disk with a rotating sun above it, things are quite different. The sun will appear to rise somewhere in the northeast and set somewhere in the northwest. The stick's shadow (if it disappears at noon) will trace out a semi-circle.

If you're uncertain about the shape of the earth, I'd strongly recommend taking a small amount of time on March 20th, and make some semi-careful observations yourself. No need for debate, no need to rely on anyone else's opinions. You can find out for yourself.

Fortunately, I am not a flat-Earther nor am I easily offended, so I read the rest of your comment. I would like to try that experiment you suggested with a flat-Earther friend of mine- I will look into it. With that being said, may I ask you if you have carried out that experiment yourself? I ask because it seems that those predicted observations would not actually be as you describe- because whether the Earth is a globe rotating eastward or a stationary disc with the sun travelling clockwise above it, both models would result in an apparent east-oriented sunrise and a west-oriented sunset, would they not? After all, a globe and a disc are both round, the difference is that the former is spherical (i.e. curved three-dimensionally) while the latter has a planar surface. In addition, the Earth is still very big regardless of it's shape, so the sun, whether it be a gigantic star 93,000,000 miles away or a more local much smaller light source circling above would give similar perceptions, no? Anyway, as I wrote in my previous comment, in the end, either model requires a significant amount of faith, and the shape of the Earth, whatever it is, does not really impact my daily life in a big way. Please don't think that I am trying to win against you or disprove you- I simply ask questions because I wish to understand both sides better. I do appreciate your input and I will try to understand the science behind your argument, and I will try your suggestion. Thanks!

On to your question - would the sun appear to be the same in both models? I don't believe so.
The sun rises in a different place every day, throughout the world. It's furthest to the north on winter solstice, and begin rising further and further south until summer solstice, when it then begins rising further to the north every day.
On a flat earth, with the sun going around in a circle overhead, the sun would only appear to rise directly east and set directly west at some particular altitude, and that altitude would be different day to day.
For example, if one is at ~ 40 degrees (New York, Cleveland, Chicago), and the sun rises directly east, then for someone else further south, but with similar sunrise times (looked at a map... how about New Orleans), the sun couldn't appear to rise directly east - the sun would appear to rise some distance north of directly east.
I'm not trying to argue either - I've done enough of that.
I'm just making some predictions based on each model. Specifically, predictions that can be compared to observations which anyone can make regardless of their location or access to expensive equipment.
