Gremunky Blackbird is very concrete in its imagery. The only abstractions there are broken wings flying and light of the dark black night, which are direct oxymorons. Compare to John writing "Julia with seashell eyes." Very unorthodox image, and that's fairly concrete for John. I've heard it said that the Blackbird is about civil rights, but Paul doesn't complete that metaphor -- he only gives you the image. Compare to Bob Dylan writing "The answer is blowing in the wind." It's a word picture that you can't even visualize. Now that's abstraction.
thescowlingschnauzer blackbird is only one example, like I said. However, I still disagree, I would say blackbird is far more abstract than concrete. The whole idea that the blackbird has been waiting all it's life for this moment, it's completely metaphorical. There is no blackbird, there are no broken wings, it hasn't been waiting. None of it is concrete at all.
As an INFP I agree that INFPs can be bad people, like any other type. :) But I don't think john was that bad. Not an angel, but not that bad either. I think that seeing INFPs as selfish is a misconception (I'm not sure if that's exactly what you think, but I've seen this around RUclips, so I just wanna talk about it for a second). Personally, I do many things that I don't wanna do for the people I care about. It's not like "I'll always do exactly what I want and I don't care about the world because my actual world is inside my head". that's defiantly not true, lol. But I do have my boundaries. As an INFP, when I'm depressed I know exactly why - if it's the situation, the people around me, etc. That's why I'll try to fix it (for example, by not being around a toxic person anymore). I also know if something that people want me to do will make me depressed, So I try to avoid that. Honestly, I think everyone should do this, your mental health should be a priority, it's not selfish (in my opinion) to take care of your soul. I think other people would probably do the same if they were more in touch with their feelings and the reasons for them. Anyway, interesting video and an interesting channel. :)
My oldest son tested as an INFP when he was younger. I think that is his true type...very creative, sensitive, compassionate, perceptive...If you are an INFP by nature then you will attract more toxic and troubled people, because they likely sense that you are more forgiving than most people, and they know they mess up a lot! I have experienced that as an INFJ as well. An INFP is not likely to seek retribution once someone has taken advantage of them one too many times, but they will eventually retreat. I am similar as an INFJ, but I am more likely to dwell on the offenses for a very long time. I do this partly because I am still trying to ponder some way to fix it, and I am so angry that I can not figure out a way. My son is more likely to simply walk away. He can move onto something new and stop living in the past better than I can, and maybe that looks selfish to some people. I think is just necessary for self-preservation, especially when you are so deeply affected by the emotions of those around you.
@@juliemiller4763 I know, we really do tend to attract toxic people. And you are right, even though I do dwell on the offenses for a while, later I just move on. As long as I'm still in touch with this kind of person I still feel upset, but after I end the relationship the problem is fixed. Now it's their problem that they are such terrible people, not mine. they have to live with themselves for the rest of their lives, not me. I think the difference is that for me a relationship with a toxic person is not worth fixing. Once I've deemed that person toxic, I don't want a relationship with them, so I only think of how to leave. As you said, it may seem selfish to some people, but it's necessary. I only try to fix relationships with "normal", non-toxic people. In these cases I don't walk away, I do dwell on the offenses and feel the anger longer.
"I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?" - John Lennon
This was great! I always found “A Day in the Life” to be a fascinating song because of the John/Paul juxtaposition. You get the daydreamy observations/large-picture thinking from John and the hurried day-to-day from Paul. Good stuff!
There’s a less well known early song of Lennon’s that I think really exemplifies his INFPness. It’s called There’s a Place. “There’s a place where I can go when I feel low, when I feel blue, And it’s my mind And there’s no time When I’m alone.”
I saw this title and got excited. I love The Beatles, and this might be the best way to explain the differences. And George is totally an INFJ. John was totally an INFP. I always thought of Paul as an ISFP.
Paul is an ISFJ. He’s not flamboyant at all despite being a good looking chap. He’s also monogamous, huge deal in the 70s when feee love was everywhere. ISFJs are solid romantic partners, don’t quit easily. ISFPs are more a free spirit than ISFJs. David Bowie is a good example of ISFP. He’s actually very focused about his art, not loosely goosey at all.
If you were being formally observed as a teacher in public school, you’d be rated Highly Effective. 👏🏻 Really enjoyed the concrete examples using lyricism - 100% how my brain operates in learning. Would love to see a similar video on the other functions! Also, I tried to do a Beatles cover in front of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yesterday (for my last summer travel video), but it was wayyy too loud outside. Boo. 😑 Back to my living room setup.
You're so infj...one of my besties also Infj also explains complex topics with nice examples of our everyday life which is actually a very good teaching strategy. And you connect everything with everything....loving it. Love listening to you.. could do that the whole day
I do believe John was an INFP. Although we are all about peace and harmony, we REALLY can neglect others in order to beneficiate ourselves or our willings, mainly if we have had enough from the outside world that doesn't let us be, as it is not so pleasent and it has no peace and harmony at all. We can get into this rebellious inner state in which we don't care anymore if we upset someone, as long as we don't upset ourselves. INFP's value their needs more than the needs of others, and when things get bad we can turn into really careless people, I think. Also, great video and love from Portugal 💜
totally agree!! his later inclination towards peace as he matured, against the soul searching and going a bit crazy and incosiderate with it when he was younger
INFPs can be dickheads too and INTJs can be kind. I know an INTJ friend who's more sympathetic and sociable with other people while I, as an INFP, come across as cold, aloof, and because I'm sometimes out of touch, I can make crude jokes that can hurt people.
This triggered a lovely moment with my family ❤ I made them take the MBTI test a while ago but (inevitably) the terminology seemed like gobbledygook on a first encounter. My Dad is a classic ISFJ - empathetic, caring yet *extremely* practical and rooted in reality (as opposed to his often infuriating INFJ daughter who literally dashed out to film a cloud of butterflies mid-conversation 😅) Anyway! We all watched your video and it illuminated the difference between my Dad and the rest of us (INFJ Mum and my lovely INFP brother) then we watched James Corden's car pool karaoke with Paul 🙂 I assume that you've seen it? They visit Penny Lane and sing Let It Be, so it's kind of perfect for you... Thank you for inspiring such a wonderful shared moment. My family don't get to hang out together very much now so it was all the more precious. Wishing you a truly lovely Sunday.
oh yes I love that video!!! oh wow, you shared my video with your family! wow that makes me feel special to have been a reason for some family togetherness. You have a great Sunday too :)
Frank James They thought your video was brilliant! It was such a clear, creative and relatable explanation 🙂 (My Dad piped up that George was his favourite but my Mum is firmly team McCartney 😅) I showed them the Sgt Pepper segment of your Music and Meaning video too, then my brother suggested watching Car Pool Karaoke. It was just really lovely. My brother was about to dash back to London and it closed our brief time together perfectly 🙂
This was such an effective way to demonstrate the difference! I also just enjoy hearing other people gush about the Beatles. I feel like "A Day in the Life" shows the John/Paul contrast really well, and within the same song. The John parts get all dreamy and surreal, but the Paul parts are extremely literal: "Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. Found my way downstairs and drank a cup, and looking up I noticed I was late. Found my coat and grabbed my hat, made the bus in seconds flat..." etc.
I agree wholeheartedly. John's parts to me always sounded a little sad and observational whereas Paul's part is very sweet and conversational. I think that's partly why that song is so amazing; it highlights the contrast in their writing dynamics wonderfully.
Blown away by your progress over the last few years!! Your bravery, candid vulnerability and perseverance has truly shown through. Truly an inspiration. 👏 Well done, good sir, well done! 👏
Oh Frank, this is your best video yet! The Beatles are my *favorite* band of all time, so much so that my daughter's middle name is Jude. What an excellent way to make MBTI functions make sense!
Also infj and have religiously listen to the Beatles but I just turned 18 and started finding myself, now that I can talk to the subliminal everything is being heard and persived for the first time. I'm going to listen to all there music again this is amazing thank you so much for your channel. Really you'll never know how much its helped I was literally going crazy like I just got out of a mental hospital and have been so frustrated that No one was understanding what I was trying to say, and I was a daily drug user from a very young age as a result. Knowing this kinda info really got me out of severe pycosis after the medication at that facility I guess my eye really opened and with added on drug use I was hearing voices and I just couldn't talk to anyone it was truly a delusional hell and I finally found out I was infj and with meditation I feel like myself agian. Your channel really made me want more and I'm completely sober for about a week if u knew me your know that's a big step so thanks for putting yourself out there without your indep explanations I was going to go insane I'm very manic at the moment for some reason so sorry for the off topic structure.
I’m such a huge Beatles fan and it literally made me so happy when I came across this. This is literally the perfect video that I never thought would exist 😂 Great video, and explained very well. -INTP-A
Can we please be friends? I am ALSO a huge Beatles fan (Paul is my favorite - he looks GORGEOUS on your profile picture btw but when doesn't he!) and Frank James!! - ENFP-T
@@julianagrantzmusic yes let’s be friends!!! I really need someone to talk to about the Beatles bc none of my friends irl are huge Beatles fans so I can’t really talk about them. And yes, I agree Paul is always so gorgeous, I love him so much. We would get along very well. Also my updated type is an INFP-A now. (Apparently that’s what John was so that’s fun)
INFP artists/musicians can come off as complete jerks in interviews because they don’t want to explain the meaning of their songs or why they are writing them. David Lynch is an INFP director that straight up says, “No.” when asked to explain his movies. I think INFP males especially don’t come across as “nice” all of the time (especially being questioned by insincere interviewers).
Frank James Hey, I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos! Once again I'm up binge watching them because the information presented is always very good and also I just can't seem to get enough of your humor! I've not met many others with that "deadpan" sense of humor like me. I usually wouldn't say things like this... but I decided to because I truly do enjoy every video I've seen of yours... I love all the jokes and sarcasm in your mannerisms. I just hope you don't stop what you're doing anytime soon, because you're videos are literally my favorite on youtube! You make me laugh SO hard and for that I just wanted to let you know and say thank you!! 😁
David Lynch seems full Ni to me. His art is an exploration of potentialities, meanings and bizarre open ended symbolisms that probably mean something to him but to which he insists he doesn't want to actively give a tangible shape by explaining it away.
Your conversation style and mode(s) of being are so refreshingly and quintessentially INFJ; I can't get enough. In other words, you matter Frank James. INFJ's matter, dammit! :D
Legit my favorite video you've ever done. Right up my alley. The Beatles are my favorite band. Low key obsessed. As soon as you said "I'm so excited to be talking about the Beatles. I can't contain myself" I was just sitting her giggling to myself. I'm literally that excited for you to be talking about them. And pair that with psychology? Man. The video of videos.
"The Lord's Work". I like the sound of that. I discovered your channel last week when I was searching for cool videos about Mr. Rodgers......I love that guy. I clicked on you and I've been hooked all week. You remind me of Mr. Rodgers (sorta') :) You both manage to say the things that really need to be said, to the people who need to hear it the most. Its pretty inspiring stuff. I think Frank James might be doing "The Lord's Work".
I hadn’t really tried to consider people or their work in this way but after you pointed it out I can see it in many things. I tend to prefer the more abstract but I can find joy in the concrete as well. Thanks for the insight!
This was an interesting portrayal of N and S using John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I hope John was an INTJ. Some people don't think we are super artistic and creative (more of the "cruel" leader/mastermind types) but, like you said, it's best not to assume all of any type are one way. I also caught up on your podcasts on my six mile walk yesterday. I hope you continue to do them. I appreciate the longer insights, especially the last one. You give good food for thought FJ! :)
Another clear example is in a more simple but yet significant song like "We can work it out". Paul wrote the verses which deal with the situation and John wrote the chorus which deals with his seeing of a bigger picture. Let's listen...
Amazing video, as a huge Beatle's fan myself it was really fascinating seeing their music through this academic lens. If you had to analyze George and Ringo's personality types, which ones would you say they are?
I tend to agree with that Stellar Maze article. George stumps me a bit but the writer of the article types him as ISFP. Ringo I think is typed as ESFJ, which makes sense to me.
Just recently discovered your channel and subscribed immediately. Loving all your videos! Now I find these video's typing the Beatles to MB Personality traits. Amazing!!!! I love the Beatles! The Beatles were the very first rock group I heard. I wasn't even in school when they made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1963. They were a phenomenal group! I recently remembered a song that I forgot they ever recorded, "Fore the Benefit of Mr. Kite," John wrote this song after seeing an ad posted about a circus coming to town. If you haven't heard it, look it up. It's a Fantastically Whimsical song.
John is most likely an ENFP or INFP, simply because of how he interacts with other people, thinks, and how he expresses himself. ENFPs can come of as more of a “jerk” than INFPs in my opinion, but it’s mostly because they know what they want and are extremely impulsive, which could explain the many things he’s said that eventually ended up hurting people. So in my opinion, he’s probably either an ENFP or INFP.
Agree. After watching the Get Back series, I thought parts 2 and 3 John was full out ENFP mode (think Robin Williams type energy). I think he retreated into INFP but was healthier as himself when we could see him being ENFP. he was also quite seductive like an ENFP- even to the cameras and hence, all of us watching
Yeah I can see the P too from his notorious laziness and time management difficulties. The E and I are often harder than it appears because just being outgoing in some situations doesn't mean that you draw your energy from there. As an INFP I can get quite "Robin Williams" like around small groups of people I know well and am comfortable with (or on a stage performing). But I shut down in social situations with new people or large groups of people in like a party type setting. So yeah John is a tricky one.
This was really interesting and enjoyable! Discovering your channel has made me want to listen to The Beatles again after not doing so for many, many years - I used to love them so much as a child which is why listening to you talk about them makes me feel very nostalgic.
My daughter and I were talking about “Strawberry Fields” the other night. Apparently it was based on a childhood memory when he was still living at the orphanage. He would climb a certain tree that overlooked the wall where he could see strawberry fields. His caretakers would get very angry and the line “they’re coming to take me away “ was born. Nobody saw his view in his tree and the meaning it would have in his life, or ours when he wrote the song later. Does that change his category?
Lennon's Imagine has both Judging and Perceiving all through it ...his J comes out when hes pretty sure that hes a dreamer and not the only one ..he also seems pretty convinced there is no heaven or hell to die for ...his P tendency comes out re how hes gonna imply this great social change ..A sleep in /sit in /getting high I think would be very much A P thing and then they would give up after the weekend and be onto something new. I guess we could find more J examples in Paul's philanthropist activities as the Beatles were very involved in community activities and donated quite a bit.Hope that helps a little by way of explanation.
thank you for this video! i’ve tried watching other videos and reading online trying to wrap my head around the two and your video is by far the best source that makes sense to me :) infj here
FJ this was an excellent presentation. You are a natural born teacher! BTW George was the prime example of an INFJ in the group. Curious people... What type is Ringo? I like them all but Ringo was so fun loving and seemed to be the peacemaker.
This is my favorite one of your videos, hands down (and I see you did another one about the Beatles that I'm going to watch next). Love it! I love the Beatles and John Lennon is my favorite. Another hint in Penny Lane are the lyrics "Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes". How sensory is that? Great video! Thanks for posting it.
FJ, this was so cool. I loved the examples of N vs. S with song lyrics. Now I'm thinking about the songs I write. That's pretty fun. 😄 Let's examine one together, shall we? Love Song to the Redwoods. "As I stepped onto the trail, I expected quiet, but the breeze had been singing love songs through the branches." Well, I guess here's a question for you. Do intuitive writers generally make bigger use of personification and metaphor? Because I described my expectations and then my experience of some pretty intense FOMO from nature. I won't bore you with analyzing every single line of my own songs. I will say, looking through that lens, I see some striking examples of exploring the abstract and now understand why it bugs me when someone says "You should write a song about ______!" And they list something I just don't care enough about. I like to invite my listeners to think about something new. Here's another thought - what about musical choices in people whose primary function is N vs. S? Harmonic choices, arrangement/texture choices, etc...I don't have a ton of time to find examples of that right now, but I'll be thinking about it. Or would that also be expanding into the F/T realm? I'm in between workshops this weekend and I'll be listening to your podcast as I hike the marsh. :) See ya!
Stephanie Douglass Stephanie Douglass Ooooo, I’d also be interested in that discussion of other musical choices based on N/S! And now you’ve got me thinking about the choices I make in my lyrics too. Hmmm...
yeah i would definitely expect for intuitive types to tend towards writing with metaphors, because they are actually trying to write about things that are greater than words can really express. as far as the music itself, I am not so sure. John and Paul definitely were both skilled writers of melody. perhaps an Fe type will be much more attuned to what music would appeal to the general ear? Also, you should write a song about sports ;)
Frank James Dang dude. You know me too well. If you want to listen to a really good sports song (way too relatable) I recommend "The Race" by Oh Pep! Look it up...
Frank James John was envious of Paul's melodic talent, and lack and lack of his own. Though. He did have some obviously. But Paul's is incredible. John the more natural talent with meaningful lyrics. I to would like to see more discussion on the musically creative subject.
When John Lennon said "no one I think is in my tree" he meant "no one I think is in my tree" . He had a tree. No one was in it. Why must people interpret everything. 🤣
@@tiaraprameswari8499 So it was you!!! You tree-dwelling Beatle person. Well done. Someone should have been in his tree so it might as well be you!! You can come out now. If you want to that is.
I don't know the context. Was Lennon worried about stalkers climbing in his tree? Out of context, it really sounds like an abstract concept. It needs interpreting.
People feel the need to interpret the line because it comes in the middle of a song with some crazy and disturbing lyrics. If you pay attention to all the verses, it's about someone seeing the alienation all around him, while himself losing touch with reality. Mapped onto an MBTI perspective, the song is almost about what happens when you lose touch with the sensor side of your faculties.
I'm not one who ever dove deep enough into the world of analysis, or literacy .... But, I like both the abstract, and the literal ... I think Tori Amos a good example of combining the two, for what that's worth, which is probably pretty much nothing. Rock on. My favorite Beatley tune is Blackbird
Deborah Waltenburg I love Tori Amos! :D I've listened to her music since early childhood. After seeing the video I can see how she's a good example of that, I agree. And I'm the opposite with music, I like to go deeper into analysis/literacy and try to find a deeper meaning if I can, even though I don't all the time.
Selena Puckett I don't have the patience to do any deeper analysis, or the brain capacity :) For me, I think the sounds of the vocals, and melodies pull me in, first, lyrics, then, keep me focused. Tori Amos was the first pianist I ever saw that did anything other than classical or jazz-related tunes, and I was obsessed from minute one
I agree with you it's very likely that Paul's an ISFJ, though he's probably the most hermetic beatle as far as showing his feelings and thoughts goes so I find it more difficult to understand him than John who I, like you, think was an INFP. I don't get why some people say an INFP has to be nice all the time and can't be a bad person: how you think and view the world and how you act can be two totally different things. As I see it, John had had so much pain in his life and experienced so many emotions he didn't know how to handle that sometimes he just exploded and did shitty things out of desperation or frustration, or as a cry for attention, hoping someone would realise his inner turmoil and save him. From some of his letters, interviews and what I've read in different books he knew when he'd done something wrong and regretted it, but most of the time he didn't try to fix it because he feared it would be impossible and was ashamed of facing whoever he'd slighted; he dreaded being rejected so he just hid or ran away from it and tried to forget it, which was interpreted as him not caring at all. That's what he did with Cynthia and Julian. That he was aware of what he did wrong, regretted it and wished it could be fixed doesn't make him a good person, but it does mean he often had good intentions but wasn't good at putting them to practice.
Frank, This is completely unrelated to this video, but I just listened to your podcast on Religion and how you feel as though you are in a spiritual No Man’s Land. Everything you said in that podcast resonated with me because I have strong emotional ties to Christianity, but am also questioning those beliefs that I so firmly held in high school that sometimes troubled me as well. I also still go to church and see how Christianity can produce lots of good, but I no longer feel firm in it and there are many other ideas and concepts to explore. It was assuring to hear that someone else is in a similar place. Your channel and podcasts are excellent, keep it up man!
"The Fool on the Hill" has always hit me the hardest, and been a favorite. Really ties into your most recent podcast, which was a great intellectual breakdown of the ego. We are all one, and I will always be that fool on the hill, the eyes in my head see what's really going on! Great video as always!
How about P and J? Mostly, I categorize P are the free-spirited, and the J are the organized. yep in the previous vid we just talked about intuitives only wanting to know a few things about a topic, and think we already get it. So I think a discussion about P and J would be great too.
P vs J really just means what function is extraverted first; and so a J type may be a bit more decisive, whereas a P type will be a little more observational. I did a quick video on it about a month ago, if you can dig it up!
Frank James I may need to take that test again. I have a terrible time making decisions, I want to know every detail and the long term ramifications before I feel comfortable making the right choice.
Hey! I love The Beatles, too! Your channel just got way more awesome. Edit: That was an incredible analysis! I totally think you typed Paul correctly. John seems a bit more difficult, for some reason.
First, I really enjoyed getting to “Nerd out” over this video. Second, I *think I would type Lennon as an INFP. In the negative, He was very passive-aggressive when he was irritated whilst being quite caring in the positive (I.e. allegedly John played out of tune on purpose so his Aunt (I think) could recognize which guitar was his). This may not be true, but it’s a nice sentiment. I don’t want to wax eloquent so I’ll stop here. Enjoyed it :)
Loved this vlog. Thanks, FJ. I love analyzing song lyrics. This reminds me of the time I was looking at the works of Ansel Adams. I loved his work but was focused (sorry :)) on his soft-focused shot of lodge pole pines as my favorite, more than his more clearly focused, crisp red-filtered black and white images. Sometimes I like the pure, softly lit images and sometimes I am more into the crisp black and white images of vibrant texture you can almost feel in the photo.
This is great, FJ! I love mixing all my favorite things in one video: FJ, music, Myers Briggs. So, gonna throw this out there, what do you think Dylan was? There's some huge debate on the internet about what personality he was, whether he was N or S, I or E. Again, I am horrible at typing people, but Bob in my opinion was N, but again I'm biased. I want him to be like me.
also, random, but if you haven't seen the video, there's a "blooper" from the "Eat the Document" film of Dylan and John Lennon in the back of Bob's car, Bob completely wasted and goofy, basically getting ill in the backseat, but it's pretty hilarious. ruclips.net/video/9Xw6Ll9F38E/видео.html
ha ha yeah I want him to be like me too. I have heard people type him as INFP and INFJ. Between the two INFP seems to fit more, since I've never seen him demonstrate an ounce of Fe, but then again he could be one of those weird jumper INFJs who favors Ti. I guess it's possible he could be like an ISFP or something, I am not well versed enough in Dylan as a person or MBTI to make an accurate judgement. It seems to me that many of his songs are stories, told firmly in the sensory world, but often times they are symbolic. Hmmmmm....
lol I think I've seen parts of that before, not the whole thing though xD Did you ever see "I'm not there"? Reminds me of Cate Blanchett's scenes. She was clearly the best part of the movie
thatASMRchick I've heard Bob Dylan typed as both ISFP and INFP before too. I'd probably go with INFP. But he's kindof like Gordon Lightfoot that way who gets tossed around as both online. He could be very visually descriptive and literal at times, then go off and write a song like There are too many clues in this room that is more abstract.
yes!! And yes! She was a great Dylan. I don't think people can type Dylan because he's such a chameleon tbh, but then again that may play into whatever his type is. He seems to have multiple personalities at least in what he produces outwardly. That's a big reason why I like him I think. I've tried to kind of learn more about him as a person, but his own autobiography has been proven to be inaccurate so it's kind of hard to! But that's the mystery.
I see John as being Ne all the way. The way his lyrics are more about taking concepts and turning them into something new and creative. Vs Ni which I would describe as doing something more similar to "uncovering" rather than creating. I also always thought John was an extrovert, but I would have to go back and watch interviews. INFP could make sense. John is either high Fi or low Fe. No aux Fe, so I don't see INFJ as a possibility (which you said in your video). If his vibe came from "I do what I want and I don't care what people think", I'd put him in the ENFP (or INFP) camp. But if it was more about instigating, challenging peoples' perceptions, getting a rise (wanting to affect people emotionally vs. Fi who wouldn't care), then I would put him in tertiary Fe/ENTP. ( Again, I really should watch interviews). I think XSFJ is a pretty good bet for Paul. I've always seen him as an Fe user, in part due to how much value he places in his audience and how he interacts with people. But also in the content of his songs - he goes for more universal themes in his writing and doesn't make it as personal as a lot of other songwriters might. As you said, he doesn't sing too much about his pain and prefers to keep things light and/or not focused on himself specifically. I relate to this as an Fe person. However, I also wouldn't rule out ENFJ as a possibility for Paul. I kind of always thought of him as being Fe and Se... though your example of Penny Lane did make me think of Si as well. I still see Fe/Se with him and I think he honestly might be skipping over his Ni in a lot of his songwriting. The reason I think this is maybe possible is that (in those times he *does* get abstract with us), it is in that Ni "uncovering" way I mentioned before rather than how I'd imagine Ne to come out. I think of Fool on the Hill and how it focuses on a concept rather than Ne possibilities and creativity. I guess I just gather Ni from him from time to time (and no Ne...) which made me also think ISFP at one point but I see too much Fe in him. *exhales* so there's my input. Clearly I enjoyed your video a lot for me to write so much, haha.
God I really dont know if I'm a sensor or an intuitive. One second I believe I'm a sensor, but then I come across another explanation that leads me to believe I'm an intuitive.
Concerning the podcast, I've attempted to tackle the subject once, took me 8 vids lol, so I commend you on doing part of it in one podcast. You dealt with confusing "persona" (as Jung defines it) with identity well. I hope you continue speaking on it when you have new info or a view on it. I can't say there's one 'teacher' that I would single out. I listen to or read and then try to get my own view on things because I don't always agree with everything in their perspective, but they do offer a new things: Jung, Tolle, Watts, Teal Swan, Mastering Alchemy, New Thinking Allowed, Matrix energetics, Biogeometry, all philosophical approaches, etc. Best regards! Zee
it's good to get a wide variety of perspectives, isn't it. you always pick up at least a little something new, or at least hear it in a new way. Thanks so much for listening :)
John Lennon always admired Paul McCartney's ability to write songs about mundane things, abou the this that happened in the day to day life, songs like Another Day, Penny Lane, Junk
Your interpretation of strawberry Fields and Penny Lane seems to be very logical and straightforward, it was easy for me to imagine what you were talking about and I greatly appreciate that. Thank you so much.
Always had John as a Ne dom, ENTP or ENFP, and Paul as ESFP or ISFP, with George as INFJ and whatever Ringo is (lol) makes for a nice patchwork of minds in a music band.
I totally agree. I think John was actually fairly empathic. Somewhere it is quoted that Yoko said John was an extravert, and she was an introvert. I think Yoko was an INFJ. I think you're also right about Paul.
Idk ..I couldnt see an E being able to write Imagine. Also if you compare the Beatles to the Stones we see the interplay I/ E dynamic play out. You see the calm subdued Beatles very much into their own minds very much into bigger thinking social justice issues. This is the exact opposite of the Stones very much into the moment and the rock and roll party life. Nothing really wrong with each approach. Also you will never be able to see an I move and bounce around like Jagger it's just not in our nature. That being said it's an interesting anology and only one I can offer an opinion on because I couldn't claim to be an expert . I will say that as an INFJ I definitely gravitate towards the Beatles
TS Eliot’s ‘Wasteland’ vs Henry Lawson’s ‘The Blue Mountains’. Lawson does heaps of story telling and descriptions of landscapes: ‘Above the ashes straight and tall through ferns with moisture dripping, I climb beneath the sandstone wall, my feet on mosses slipping.’ Very concrete with no real hidden meaning. Eliot also does story telling and descriptions but with tons of abstract stuff: “breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire”, “The wind crosses the brown land unheard. The nymphs are departed.
Whoa. I once made the same observation, that you could easily illustrate the difference of Sensing and Intuition with the work of McCartney and Lennon, and even thought of the same two pairs of songs to make the contrast. Needless to say, I loved this video!
First of all that's a great video, it explains the difference very well. I have a question, not realted to the video. Is there a connection between precentage of different MBTI types and their purpose in society? I got to thinking about it because I get that INFJ considered "visionary" and stuff, but how can we serv society in a real way, to actually do something, and can it be that it is the rarest personality because it is the most useless one?
Sveta Ladigin no personality is useless. There is a purpose to each of us. There is a good side and bad side to each type. It depends on which side you choose to use.
different types tend to get drawn to different fields of work, and so yeah you could say that each type has its own role to fill in society. You could be a visionary on any level, really, though I can understand how it might seem difficult to fit in somewhere and do meaningful work at the same time.
This question REALLY moves me... I’ve often felt “useless”... but I’m starting to feel it’s especially because I think our society doesn’t value a lot of the abilities that come naturally to these types (and even intuitive types in general..) Something that keeps coming back to me these days on this, though I can’t remember the source, is how I heard someone talk about how INFJs back in the day would have been a community’s shaman or mystic. Their gifts would have been recognized and valued and they would have received proper training to develop their abilities... but that that has been kinda lost... This speaks to me because I’m feeling we have to find modern ways of reconnecting to these strengths and abilities... To our intuition! Everyone has access to this function, but it’s a natural state for Intuitives. We need to rediscover and develop these abilities ourselves since no one has shown us how. We have to grow and develop ourselves and find a way to use the insights we gather in a tangible way. Right now, for me I think that’s about finding a way that can really help, support or inspire people on their own path. I haven’t exactly found out what my way of doing that looks like yet. Everyone will have their own way of using these strengths... But that’s exactly where I’m at right now. Really trying to bring those strengths out in the world in a way that feels right, that finally feels useful... meaningful. I feel it’s hard to find... but possible. Just trickier than the traditional paths that are already established in our sensor world... but maybe, in the end, that’s the fun of it? Maybe this is part of our challenge with our time here? I definitely find that annoying and even depressing sometimes but when I think about it like this, it’s also kind of exciting... Whado you think? This moved me so much I decided to make a video... but still have much to say on this. Thanks for the inspiration. “Feeling Useless (INFJ/Intuitives)” ruclips.net/video/zpfmsh4fISc/видео.html
I knew which two songs you were going to use as examples. Those two always come to my mind when I think about the polarity between John's and Paul's talents that makes the magic of The Beatles so timeless. Even more so when you add some George into it.
Well, I'm an INFP, and I'm just as much of a jerk as John was. When you feel unwanted, no matter how much love you're trying to give people, after a while you learn how to convince yourself you don't give a shit about them. That's just the image of the jerk, you're not really a jerk, but you kind of want to be, otherwise being hurt that deeply just feels too unfair. Being seen as a bad person seems much better than people seeing just how vulnerable you are...
As a lifelong Beatles fan I totally relate(d) to their lyrics sometimes, but I totally would get lost, I started listening to them when I was around 8 and really got into them in middle school, I still know their lyrics. Thank you for this! Anyway, I think John just really hit that acid hard(er) than Paul probably.
I want to be a theologian or preacher so here it goes... The normal apostles gave eye witness accounts whereas the Gospel of Mary and Thomas are abstract concepts that the church didn't recognize. Just like people have a hard time believing some things I say I experienced saying I must be trippin
It's from the dead sea a scrolls and nag hammadi text. What's left of Mary's is talking about a vision she had and Jesus telling her about it. Gospel of Thomas is totally abstract concepts Jesus taught him about really understanding the abstract to be saved.
As an Intuitive, when I first heard "Penny Lane", I was really looking for a deeper meaning behind the lyrics, then I realized there's none. On the other hand, when I first heard "Strawberry Field Forever", the lyrics instantly clicked in my head.
I'm at the beginning of the video, I just want to thank you for diving into this subject! I intuitively (haha) understand the difference between the two, but I'm about to get some actual knowledge now :)
"The next line is... Nothing is real" Well, that escalated quickly
I dont like the beatles and i also agree .
@@gastonbordon5079 What a sad life
i found that funny
FJ: "Don't trust intuitives for typing, especially an infj"
Also FJ, an Infj: "Let's type the Beatles!"
lol but i have a source xD
Lol!
Myers Briggs and The Beatles, my two obsessions in one video AMAZING
Elmo omg me
omg same!!
Same!
YESSSS
Yeah
Paul trying his hand at abstract ideas: "You say goodbye / And I say hello / Hello hello / I don't know why you say goodbye / I say hello." Yeah...
LOL at least he tried
John tried concrete ideas, too. Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite he read write off a poster. He didn't seem to enjoy that method tho.
Paul also wrote abstract songs, especially on his Ram album, but a song like blackbird exemplifies this
Gremunky Blackbird is very concrete in its imagery.
You're my kind of weird bro
@Steven Kaden oo that’s cool

Thank you, I agree.
I completely agree with what you said
Yes!! Very well said, thank you!
Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?"
- John Lennon
sounds like Ne
@kevinl4687 I'm INFJ and I believe all that too. Dreams are just another realm. Everything is real somewhere.
This was great! I always found “A Day in the Life” to be a fascinating song because of the John/Paul juxtaposition. You get the daydreamy observations/large-picture thinking from John and the hurried day-to-day from Paul. Good stuff!
exactly! that was the other song i was thinking of to demonstrate this dichotomy
starry_config astute observation with a succinct and logical explanation
Yes!
Woke up, got out of bed...the whole bit is very S.
This song immediately came to mind when I clicked on this video!
Never trust anyone who does not like The Beatles.
i love em
Lol I'm in danger...
@Bobert Wiltshire Poor Baby Bobby doesn't want to be liked.
Since we're into music, it's weird how Britain evolved from The Beatles to Judas Priest to Infant Annihilator.
I don't like the beatles ❤️
There’s a less well known early song of Lennon’s that I think really exemplifies his INFPness. It’s called There’s a Place.
“There’s a place where I can go when I feel low, when I feel blue,
And it’s my mind
And there’s no time
When I’m alone.”
I saw this title and got excited. I love The Beatles, and this might be the best way to explain the differences. And George is totally an INFJ.
John was totally an INFP.
I always thought of Paul as an ISFP.
glad you liked it :)
I can't think of a better example of an ENFP than John Lennon. Paul in an ESFP.
I'm an INFJ and George always been my favorite one, now I know why
If you were being formally observed as a teacher in public school, you’d be rated Highly Effective. 👏🏻 Really enjoyed the concrete examples using lyricism - 100% how my brain operates in learning. Would love to see a similar video on the other functions!
Also, I tried to do a Beatles cover in front of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yesterday (for my last summer travel video), but it was wayyy too loud outside. Boo. 😑 Back to my living room setup.
oooh, highly effective!
Maybe you could have locked yourself in a bathroom at the rock n roll hall of fame and it would have been quieter?
with more reverb too
Frank James YES! 🎶🤗🚽 #toilettunes

Way to make a multidimensional song be planted down into a simple, boring sound to fit your ideas. You sound like a church.
FJ! As a Beatle enthusiast, this video was spot on! Loved the comparisons and analogies. So much fun!
thanks, Morgyn :)
Ouch. And OK, you're not wrong.
Lol John is definitely an extrovert, talkative as hell
totally agree!! his later inclination towards peace as he matured, against the soul searching and going a bit crazy and incosiderate with it when he was younger
INFPs can be dickheads too and INTJs can be kind. I know an INTJ friend who's more sympathetic and sociable with other people while I, as an INFP, come across as cold, aloof, and because I'm sometimes out of touch, I can make crude jokes that can hurt people.
"value their needs more than the needs of others"... huh? No, opposite in many cases. But we value our _wants_ above the cultural wants of groups
This triggered a lovely moment with my family ❤ I made them take the MBTI test a while ago but (inevitably) the terminology seemed like gobbledygook on a first encounter. My Dad is a classic ISFJ - empathetic, caring yet *extremely* practical and rooted in reality (as opposed to his often infuriating INFJ daughter who literally dashed out to film a cloud of butterflies mid-conversation 😅)
Anyway!
What an excellent way to make MBTI functions make sense!
well thanks so much, Marsha :) That is so cool that your daughter's middle name is Jude
This is literally the perfect video that I never thought would exist 😂
Great video, and explained very well. -INTP-A
Can we please be friends?
I think INFP males especially don’t come across as “nice” all of the time (especially being questioned by insincere interviewers).
that is a good point, you do see that somewhat often with INFP musicians (Bob Dylan is another good example).
You think David Lynch is an INFP? Sources, please?
Thom Yorke, from Radiohead, is another example of an INFP that behaves that way as well.
ha ha, thanks Sandy :)
Really enjoyed this type of video! Would be happy to see more of this kind :)
thanks Jo :)
being a beatlemaniac for years, you've just revived this part of me and I'm glad.
I think Frank James might be doing "The Lord's Work".
well I'm glad you're here :) I love Mr Rogers so that's high praise.
MBTI video + Frank James + Beatles = *PERFECTION*
I like that you used The Beatles for this. They are my favorite.
thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the podcast. I think INTJs can be creative, they have that dominant Ni which is a machine for creativity
Another clear example is in a more simple but yet significant song like "We can work it out". Paul wrote the verses which deal with the situation and John wrote the chorus which deals with his seeing of a bigger picture. Let's listen...
you had me hooked when i saw the Beatles :)
This is my favourite video of you so far! I'm a huge Beatles fan and it really helped me understand the concept
wow! thanks so much :)
I'm a simple person, I see John and Paul = I click
I love the way you analyze things...you keep it fun & creative!!!
YOU ARE A BEATLES FAN, NOW I GOT OBSESSED WITH YOUR CHANNEL, THANKS
Good material. I'm impressed.
Thanks, Lacie :)
Thank you for extroverting your feelings and insights, Frank. It is a joy for a lot of us. :)
glad to do it, Ty :)
Can you do judging vs perceiving using the Beatles?
Lennon's Imagine has both Judging and Perceiving all through it ...his J comes out when hes pretty sure that hes a dreamer and not the only one ..he also seems pretty convinced there is no heaven or hell to die for ...his P tendency comes out re how hes gonna imply this great social change ..A sleep in /sit in /getting high I think would be very much A P thing and then they would give up after the weekend and be onto something new. I guess we could find more J examples in Paul's philanthropist activities as the Beatles were very involved in community activities and donated quite a bit.Hope that helps a little by way of explanation.
thank you for this video! i’ve tried watching other videos and reading online trying to wrap my head around the two and your video is by far the best source that makes sense to me :) infj here
thanks Kate :)
FJ this was an excellent presentation. You are a natural born teacher! BTW George was the prime example of an INFJ in the group. Curious people... What type is Ringo? I like them all but Ringo was so fun loving and seemed to be the peacemaker.
thanks! well that article on Stellar Maze I think types Ringo as ESFJ, which seems to fit to me
This is my favorite one of your videos, hands down (and I see you did another one about the Beatles that I'm going to watch next).
Mentos jones And Paul was envious of John too, not just John to Paul.
This video is you in your element FJ! I can see your passion and it's contagious, please make more vids like this, love your creative insights!
When John Lennon said "no one I think is in my tree" he meant "no one I think is in my tree" .
He had a tree. No one was in it.
Why must people interpret everything.
🤣
🤣 thank you for that image.
You were wrong because I was in his tree
Love the Beatles too! Got me through crazy teen years! Thanks Frank!
And I'm the opposite with music, I like to go deeper into analysis/literacy and try to find a deeper meaning if I can, even though I don't all the time.
great song!
I feel like Blackbird is quite an abstract song in a way
Selena Puckett I don't have the patience to do any deeper analysis, or the brain capacity :) For me, I think the sounds of the vocals, and melodies pull me in, first, lyrics, then, keep me focused. Tori Amos was the first pianist I ever saw that did anything other than classical or jazz-related tunes, and I was obsessed from minute one
I won't argue that, Oscar Brown :)
This is the best example of N vs S I've ever seen. When I write songs, they're definitely more sensing. Thanks!
Omg, as an infp that need to work in healing, sometimes this is my way of doing things I regret
Greasy hair James is SO 6 years ago! I Loved this video. It has a Very good old school RUclips vibe that I miss
This was fun and educational.
thanks :)
This is amazing because I’m a Beatles super fan obsessive and an an INFJ/lover of this channel I could not be happier. You read my SOUL FRANK.
ha ha, yay!
New video and podcast episode on the same day - best Sunday
:D
I thought this was so nicely explained! John was always my favourite Beatle! Thanks for this video! :)
no problem, Elizabeth :)
across the universe
good one
Frank,
This is completely unrelated to this video, but I just listened to your podcast on Religion and how you feel as though you are in a spiritual No Man’s Land.
I would like to know how George and Ringo are. Cool video mate!
Fun video!
I’ve loved The Beatles all my life & never thought about the boys in these terms before.
Thanks for dissecting them!
Take us to school Frank. Good morning 💖
Hey DJ!
John Lennon always admired Paul McCartney's ability to write songs about mundane things, abou the this that happened in the day to day life, songs like Another Day, Penny Lane, Junk
quite true
He was envious of Paul's natural gift of melody.
@@johngallagher72 Prince strikes me as an I who could bust moves. I’m not positive about the I though.
Eliot also does story telling and descriptions but with tons of abstract stuff: “breeding
lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire”, “The wind crosses the brown land unheard. The nymphs are departed.
I like this dude and I aint even clever like the other guys leaving comments here ✌
I’ve often felt “useless”... but I’m starting to feel it’s especially because I think our society doesn’t value a lot of the abilities that come naturally to these types (and even intuitive types in general..)
Something that keeps coming back to me these days on this, though I can’t remember the source, is how I heard someone talk about how INFJs back in the day would have been a community’s shaman or mystic.

What a great choice of songs to show the contrast between JL and PM.
did you watch Paul McCartney's Carpool Karaoke? It's too much feels man...
YES! it was so cool
I knew which two songs you were going to use as examples. Those two always come to my mind when I think about the polarity between John's and Paul's talents that makes the magic of The Beatles so timeless. Even more so when you add some George into it.
You are hilarious at times
this is the best thing thank you for this! I knew there was a reason why I related to Lennon so much
Well, I'm an INFP, and I'm just as much of a jerk as John was.
Bravo Iris!
John was definitely an INFP, he couldn't have been INTJ. -INTJ
Thanks for your well-organized analysis, beautiful Macca bass btw!
I want to be a theologian or preacher so here it goes... The normal apostles gave eye witness accounts whereas the Gospel of Mary and Thomas are abstract concepts that the church didn't recognize. Just like people have a hard time believing some things I say I experienced saying I must be trippin
huh, that is an interesting way of looking at it. I haven't read the other gospels, I should probably check them out and see what they're all about
It's from the dead sea a scrolls and nag hammadi text. What's left of Mary's is talking about a vision she had and Jesus telling her about it. Gospel of Thomas is totally abstract concepts Jesus taught him about really understanding the abstract to be saved.
Very controversial of course but I like to read everything and know all sides. Think that's an infj thing
this is just..the best video I ever watched. ever.
:D
Infj? Noooo if he did what he wanted and didn’t care for others opinions that sounds more like an INTJ than an INFJ...
As an Intuitive, when I first heard "Penny Lane", I was really looking for a deeper meaning behind the lyrics, then I realized there's none.
On the other hand, when I first heard "Strawberry Field Forever", the lyrics instantly clicked in my head.
Love the Beatles. Love the vid. Have you ever considered a career in teaching? I would take your class! #Beatles101 :)
the thought has crossed my mind :) thanks, Nadine
I appreciate your examples here, I have a better grasp on the differences now. Solid. Thank you. Keep on trucking...
John's neurosis might blur his type a bit, making him harder to read then the seemingly saner Paul.
The Beatles are the blood that flows through my veins!
Excellent explanation and I agree with you! Brilliant 🌟
Thanks, EJ!
"John Lennon is a jerk, so he must be an INTJ."
I'm at the beginning of the video, I just want to thank you for diving into this subject! I intuitively (haha) understand the difference between the two, but I'm about to get some actual knowledge now :)
