  • Posca Colored Pencil Review | Uni Mitsubishi Posca Colored Pencil Review
In this review we take an in-depth look at the Uni Mitsubishi Posca Colored Pencils. Most of you I am sure are familiar with the hugely popular Posca Pens, Posca have now introduced colored pencils to their art arsenal.
As always to help with the RUclips review I have also add written review where I mention that the Posca Colored Pencils can indeed be purchased open stock as I mistakingly mentioned in the RUclips review that I couldn't find them open stock. But in the written review there is a lot of other additional information. I have also completed a speed drawing of the artwork as well as add a page to The Art Gear Guide with still images of the artwork allowing you to inspect the images at your own leisure.

Harry, thank you so much for your honesty. They look great but that's about it! I wish I had waited for your review as I bought the full set last year (for £58.49) I swatched them as soon as they arrived on several types of paper and as instructed ie on top of posca pens... I've not used them since and I wouldn't feel comfortable selling them on. Note to self - wait until Harry uploads his reviews!

Hullo Harry, Thanks for the review! I do not believe these are for me despite others professing their liking of these pencils! OH! I saw Lindsay Weirich "The Frugal Crafter" use cotton-balls in the bottom of her "spirits" bottle. it kept her from getting to much of the OMS on her brush and made using the mixture easier. Just something I learned and thought I might pass it along. I have seen to many drips and stains from over use of OMS or Zest-It. I thought your StarWars figure quite menacing and an amazing drawing! Thanks for showing us these pencils and giving us your opinions. Please take care, be safe and enjoy the rest of your day!

Your review was great! I totally agree with you on the lack of lightfast ratings for a pencil that claims to be an artist grade pencil. If they claim "artist grade" they should definitely provide the lightfast ratings. Uni makes great products but never provides the lightfast ratings - and they should. Your art work with these pencils looks amazing! Your test on various papers was extremely interesting. The Uni Posca pencil superpower is the ability to stick to almost any surface even glass - although on glass it doesn't show up as strongly as on other surfaces. The Posca pencils and the crayons (Posca Wax Pastels) can be used with the Posca Paint Markers for details and special effects difficult to achieve with the markers alone. They also share the same basic color palette with the Posca Markers which helps with the detailing work.

Thank you for this review. I've been looking at these on Amazon recently, but since there is no lightfast information for them, I don't want to spend that kind of money for regular colored pencils.
I do have the Prismacolor Premier pencils for serious artwork, and I just got the first three sets of the Black Widow series and the Arrtx pencils for everything else. 😊

    Great review and picture.
Bought the 36 set from Amazon a few months ago for £44, as I wanted them to do vibrant highlights. Also they are open stock on Cult Pens. They work well in colouring books and with other pencils. Now I have them I will buy open stock to replace them. They are not my favourites but they do work better with Zest It.
The best part for me is the three tiered case. I've decanted the Posca into a slotted case with colour chart and am using the trays for holding the pencils I'm using when I colour. It stops them rolling and has saved many an accident already. I can also keep the ones I'm using on a piece separate, which saves time if I'm using several sets.

Great useful review as usual Harry, thanks. I think there's a lot they need to work on here, particularly with regards to information about the pencils on the packaging. The lack of it would definitely put me off buying them especially as they are not cheap. And I will absolutely be watching your eraser video, this is something I'm always trying to find good information on and never quite finding, so I'm looking forward to that.

I got the 24 set three years ago and I loved them. They were quite expensive (US$ 40) for such a small set in my city (Lima). There’s no open stock. They were very good and I used them mixed with the Posca oil pastels.

Hi Harry. Thanks for all your reviews, they are my go to before buying pencils. I bought the 36 set a few years back. They had a plastic box round the black box and it had all the colour names that match up with the numbers on the edge of the pencils. I love these pencils, they are really pigmented and blend as well as Prismacolors. I love these pencils, just wish they were available open stock.

I've had the 36 set since they came out but I got them at a half price discount which made them around the same price for a similar sized set of Poly's/Prismas etc and I've been very happy with them. I certainly would never pay £88 for the 36 as they were at the time. The 36 set has all the pencil numbers and names on the back of the packaging, so it's much easier to pick out what's what.
    Great review as always Harry.

If you buy the full set, you will get a color number and name key. I marked the slots in the plastic tin with corresponding numbers to make putting them away easy. I’ve never seen the small sets before. These are nice pencils, but they aren’t especially user friendly.

HI! I am working on a very detailed art project where I am utilizing a lot of my my Prismacolor Verithin pencils. The set is only a 36 piece set and I found myself wishing the set has more colors in it. Not only that it appears that Prismacolor will be discontinuing the Verthins. Can you suggest THESE any other pencils that would work the same as Verithins. If so I would be interested the Pine Green as the Verithins do not have a dark green in it, as well the bright red. I purchased a Polychromos Pine Green, which held the point a just a "little better". I did go back and reviewed your old Verthins video what was the best Verithin review on RUclips. You nailed it 100%. This coming from a Verithin user. They are very hard, hold a point extremely well, great for details, yet still have a vibrant color.

Hello, Thank you very much for the review.
I have a question regarding how these coloured pencils relate to the other Mitsubishi Pencil coloured pencils. It seems that Uni POSCA coloured pencils seem to be a product mainly present in the Americas and European markets, and for example are not found in the current Mitsubishi Pencils product catalogue (although other Posca products are present).
My specific question is whether these UNI POSCA coloured pencils are a rebranding of some of the other Mitsubishi coloured pencils or are they a completely independent line? And if they are independent, how does their quality compare with the UNI COLORED PENCIL which comes in 100 colours, with the POLY COLOR Mitsubishi or the 888 which comes in 36 colours...

      Hi David
Thank you so much for this amazing question, I will reach out to my contact at the company and ask them to help clear this up, however, whilst waiting for a reply I will have to test all the pencils you mentioned right beside each other and try to determine if the POSCA pencils are indeed a rebranding of the other pencils and if they are different I will let you know how.
I will get back to you as soon as I have conducted my own test and then as soon as I get a reply from the company, the reply can on occasion take some time.
Thank you so much for your question my friend and for your support.

Picture beautiful. Looks amazing! I've been wanting those pencils since they came out. But not on the top of my list, simple because of the price!! 🤷☺️. And yes I'll definitely watch a video on erasers!! So far I use the clay type. And Prisma has a solid white eraser that is really good. Now not there tan eraser of Prisma! It's a piece of crap, lol. But they have the white one I've got. And it came in a Prisma shading pen with a couple of items you get in the same package. I was really impressed with it!☺️🙋❤️‍🔥

I found a website that claims they are lightfast. I just havent found how much on each color. I notice Asian colored pencils dont give info on lightfastness. You really cant beat full info with pencils like Card a nache or Derwent

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  Год назад +2

When a web site makes a claim like that and fails to actually provide the information, you can pretty much bet they are either getting something in return for the review or they are just guessing the information.
What you have to remember about any product that is lightfast test in the correct way, in other words, ASTM or Blue Wool, not in house; this process will add value to the product. When Derwent sent their Lightfast pencils to Arizona to be ASTM lightfast test in the proper laboratory with all the correct artificial environmental setting, UV exposure times and not direct sunlight testing, it costed Derwent a huge amount of money to have this done. This is one of the many reasons that products correctly lightfast tested cost a lot of money also, the company have to recoup that money somehow and they do it via the products.
So when any company goes through all this additional cost, time and effort to have their product lightfast tested, they actually display the information on the packaging, it is like a badge of honour. It's like an Athlete training all their life in a particular event, they eventually get to the pinnacle of their sport and represent their country in the Olympics and they win Gold. A few years after the event and someone asks them what do you do for a living, or what sporting event do you take part in, they are not going to simply say running or swimming or whatever. They will most likely say, I am an Olympic Gold Medalist Swimmer or Runner etc and they will say that because they invested their entire life into that one moment. This is the best analogy I can think of.
So when you purchase a set of colored pencils and they are pretty inexpensive, chances are they are not lightfast tested and if they are it will be in house testing, which doesn't carry the same weight as the Luminance or Lightfast pencils for example. Another red flag will be, if you have to research for days about the product and whether or not they have been lightfast tested, that is a huge red flag. The reason being, as I mentioned above, the companies go to huge expense and effort to get an ASTM or Blue Wool testing certificate so their is an element of pride in that and so it is displayed. Look at the Lightfast and Luminance packaging, they both have ASTM Lightfast on the box. Caran d'Ache used to have the ASTM Lightfast Tested inside a gold star they were that proud of the rating, I think now it is announced inside a silver circle on the box.
In the British Army when you become a Sniper, it is a huge course to pass and very very difficult, one of the tests is crawling on your belly for a mile, whilst carrying a jerry can full of water, it is unbelievably difficult. Anyway, when you pass, you are allowed the privilege of wearing the crossed rifles with an S above them. The first time that badge goes on your arm, you mysteriously walk with that army swinging, it also faces almost everyone you pass, just to let them know you are a Sniper. It's the same kind of thing in the art world and lightfast testing.

I'm waiting for the boring review, Harry ;) I often buy the erasers for their looks (KIN actually really pretty ones) 😂
I have 4 Posca colored pencils purchased individually in France. And like you, I don't use them much because of the lack of information on lightfastness.
A French art material tester says that these pencils are very similar to the Uni Pericia pencils. These Pericia were Uni's limited edition of 36 very high-end colored pencils.

They are the same, just renamed. I got mine onstage at Blick on sale. I don't remember exactly how much but it was definitely not close to $118. I purchased the 36 set with a few other items the bill was under $80.. still expensive. They are still cheaper than the three Pericia sets I found. The Uni Pericia set came in a nice leather-like case as well.

    Thank you for this video.
Why is this company even in the art arena!? These pencils look very similar to low, low budget pencils you get for kids' summer camps or back to school backpacks; the cheap colored pencils one might get at discount stores here in the U.S.(Dollar Tree, Dollar General) for $1.25(US).
Uni/Mitsubishi/Posca's high price range is ridiculous, they could have done better. At that price, one could buy high quality nice starter sets like, Derwent, Faber Castell, Prismacolor, and a full set of middle grade Arteza; even 12 set Holbein-which is also available open stock. With Arteza you get 120 pencils for under $90(US).
Why would anyone buy these sets, outside of a novelty collector?
As a serious artist, particularly if one markets and sells their original art-not prints, they would do best by saving their money and investing in quality top of the line professional grade color pencils.
