      My friend, in the grand scheme of things, you guys do so much more for me than I could ever do for your guys and I always feel terribly guilty about this fact. All I do is make videos and articles telling you what I think about art products, you guys are the ones who make the channel what it is, you guys are the ones who take the time out of your day to write the most wonderful things to me and my family. I often wonder what I have done to deserve such amazing people being part of my life and I still can't find an answer, not that I am complaining, I just wish I was in a position to give as much back to you all.

    Great updated review! I've gotten in the habit of saying oil dominant or wax dominant since all pencils typically have both. I do find, however that wax dominant pencils tend to be more opaque and oil dominant more translucent so I compare to pudding vs. jell-o the same way I differentiated hair color for my beauty school students. Cheers!

    Hi Harry! Thank you very much for your review again. I was given a Lyra Polycolor 24 set when I first started my adventures with color pencils. I love them very much because of their softness. I feel they are really noble pencils because they blend well not only with their own brand, I use them with my polychromos and prismacolors, and they still work beautifully! Fantastic pencils! Thank you for your hard work!

    i would be over the moon if lyra took a page from crayola's book with their colours of the world set and bring out something similar, lyra quality in those craylola shades would knock it out the park for me.

    Love your reviews and agree with you that these are really lovely pencils. They are very pigment rich and the colours are bright and saturated. I would be wary of trusting the lightfastness ratings though. I swatched out mine and left the test in a sunny spot for a few weeks as I have done with all my other pencils. The results were disappointin and didn't always match the star rating, with all the prettiest colours fading quite badly. I think 36 out of the 72 were still fine, so I would say that they are great for colouring books etc but not for artwork intended for display.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 года назад +9

      I personally have huge issues with all of the lightfast results on pencils. I personally think there should be one lightfast standard and that way every pencil can be held up against it. the blue Wool and ASTM are all very well and good, but having two standards confuse issues I think, then companies like Lyra, Faber Castell and lots of others use their out lightfast ratings which again confuse matters.
      I think there should be one test and if you as a company want your pencils lightfast testing then this one standard would be the same every company have to follow.

  • @herbcroneart
    @herbcroneart 4 года назад +4

    To hopefully answer a couple of questions...I think the artist is Emanuele Dascanio and I think that brown set you might be remembering is kohinoor. I have the grey set of Lyra and have been thinking about buying these. They vary hugely in price on Amazon UK. I’ve seen them for £48 and for £96 from Amazon themselves. Might wait for a deal 😜

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 года назад +4

      Hi thank you so much for the heads up on the artist, I’ll take a wee look at that and if it is this artist I’ll mention them on my written review which I can edit as and when needed.
      I know about the Koh-I-Noor Brown set of 12 I actually reviewed them on my channel but you could be right and I might be getting mixed up. I definitely feel the Lyra Polycolor could do with a set of 12 Browns similar to the KIN pencils. With the art work I created I had to get a bit creative with the black and the likes of the Indian Red, Pompeian red, Cinnamon and Dark Orange mixed with browns.
      You are also right about the price variation on Amazon, this is why I don’t mention the prices on my video review and only on my written review because I can change the written review very easily. Every single Sunday I check any Amazon links I’ve provided and if a cheaper set appears on Amazon I amend the link to the cheaper set. This is just so any viewers or subscribers to my channel know that I am always trying to make sure I am pointing them to the cheapest set. I don’t always get it right, I might miss a deal occasionally but I really try my best cause I know how important it is to get good deals.
      Thank you so very much for your amazing comment thank you.

    Hi I just love your artwork - I especially love your views and pencil recommendations it is very helpful in choosing what to buy.
    I did come across some information about the Lyra pencils some time ago and have to share what I found with you - they may be stamped as Germany BUT they moved all their pencil manufacturing to a plant in China...... just so you are aware, it seems a little misleading for them to be marked Germany really.
    Where are Lyra pencils made?
    China
    They are made at FILA's main plant in China, and sold under established national brand names. Very established brand names - LYRA (Germany) dates from 1806, and Dixon (USA) from 1795.

    I was struggling for my first set. I wanted a student-grade pencil but with open stock, I don't mind buying those great pencils from China but they have no representation in Europe and are not open stock. I had my eyes on the Bruyinzeel Expression set, but what will happen when a pencil gets too short to be used? not open stock again. Then I saw your review and thought that the Bruynzeel Design Colour could be the answer, good price, high quality, and open stock. Now I see this review and I think I found my answer. Thank you!

      I am so sorry for any confusion I may have caused. this set that I have reviewed of the Lyra Rembrandt is exactly the same sets that I reviewed all those years ago. the only reason I done a refresh on the review was because back when I first started reviews I failed to add art work along with the review and I wanted to do that.
      There are still quite a few reviews that I want to go back over and refresh but it isn't just the art work it is the quality of the videos that I wanted to refresh because my equipment has improved so much since then as well. Also, back when I first started the reviewes, for some reason I had a lot of images that I placed in the video reviews that were distorted on playback, I since learnt that the image files were too large hence the distorting and I wanted to fix that as well.
      Also my audio was terrible in the first videos and so I wanted to change those as well. With regards to the information I wrote in those first reviews, nothing has changed, in fact, if anything I have added a bit more information due to how much I have learnt.
      In my first video review of the Lyra Rembrandt I said how much I loved the pencils and in this version of the video I say exactly the same thing, only this time I am able to explain why I love them so much. Thats why when I have done the refresh video reviews I have still kept the first videos up so that people can see I have only really improved the quality and added art work demonstrations.
      I am so sorry for any confusion I have caused but I can tell you all is well and they are the exact same pencil and sets.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 3 года назад

      Faber Castell Polychromos are better than Lyra Polycolor. However, neither is a bad choice and always, there are 2 more factors to leep in mind, when choosing coloured pencils. The 1st is the subject you're going to draw (Check if the set, has the colours you need) and the 2nd, is the paper you are going to use. (Some pencils, work and perform better, with different paper than others)

    • @ladyhollman9534
      @ladyhollman9534 3 месяца назад

      It depends on whether you’re using them for what they are meant for or if you want to wet them up with chems to be like watercolor. Personally, I prefer my Lyra over my Faber Castell Polychromos. Each person has their own preference as both are very good products.
      Keep researching reviews, there are some done on Bristol and other dry media papers before deciding. You should see how they perform on smooth papers also. Fabriano Artístico is watercolor paper, so it has a texture and sizing.

    These were the first pencils I bought on your recommendation back just after you started the channel and have been very happy with them then and still am. These are one of my favorite sets and have never been disappointed especially when compared to many more expensive brands like FC Polychromos and my Derwent Procolour. These and the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor I have recommended to people wanting a good quality pencil at a reasonable price! And I have since gone on to buy several other products by both companies and have found all of the supplies I have purchased to be excellent, and the one small problem I ran into recently when I bought the Lyra water soluble crayons (set of 48) Lyra was very quick to fix the issue (was missing one crayon in the set and one other was badly cracked and they replaced both with no issues when I contacted them and were very apologetic that I had a problem)

      The 12 grey set ( has 2 of each in the set ) plus soft grey warm and hard black that can be purchased open stock makes up the entire set of Lyra Polycolor. Purchasing the 12 set of greys was actually more cost effective than purchasing one of each open stock. The remainder of the 105 set in the wooden box is graphite pencils.
