Just got done moving a bunch of big boulders at home myself, and while I rented a telehandler I watched a bunch of videos to see how others were moving rocks just out of curiosity. This has to be, by far, the best and most ingenious idea I have seen yet if you don’t have large equipment or want to move across an area without the damage heavy machinery can cause. Bravo sir!
Thanks for this interesting, and helpful demo!!! I've been thinking about how to move large boulders, with the least amount of equipment, (and risk). Perhaps there's a way to set up a "jib crane", using a length of rigid pipe, (for a mast, and some sort of come-along/boat winch, and, some "earth anchors", and steel chain/cables.
I have been down that road. Either I am spending time inflating and deflating tires, and moving the trailer back and forth (because the crane wont roll with flat tires and a 2000 lb load), or I spend the time chaining and pulling. Chaining and pulling is more time efficient.
interested in this mod engine crane / hoist. did you get square tubes and mounted those tires on it and inserted it to the 1" square tube on the actual crane itself?
Can you make a video about putting the wheels on that engine hoist. I have a nearly new hoist and need to make a sandstone fire pit floor, a wall to reinforce a riprap ditch, and some other landscaping work. I got a deal on the hoist, but had yet to figure out working around the little steel wheels.q
Yeah I have some granite boulders that are closer to 4x4x4' I am wondering about moving them by hand. I think that I better call in some heavy machinery though. I can't imagine how I could get them up out of the ground and then move them. Your setup would be fantastic for most of the rocks I need to move here though! Thanks for sharing, best of luck on the water works
Those are big. I think granite weighs in at almost 200 pounds a cubic foot. You will need a machine for sure. But check out Markerbuoy. He has some good ideas. ruclips.net/video/xp6M2ghzhjg/видео.html
Would love to see how you do the modification as well! Looks like a lot of us would. Can it be done in one day? How much would it cost? And can we take the wheels on and off as we please or are the modifications permanent?
Shortening the jib moved the rock (and hence the centre of mass) rearwards. When it was sitting on the frame, taking part of the load on the jib did not move the rock, nor the centre of mass. The load is still where the rock is. There's many ways to prove this but perhaps the simplest to explain is to consider the situation where the rock is hanging entirely on the jib...if this moved the load back to the jib base, then you would not need the front tyres out past the rock. Instead you could retract them back to just past the jib. Clearly this is nonsense, as it would just tip forwards. Why? Because the centre of mass of the rock is not moved just because you lift it two different ways.
Again, I have worked with this device for years, and have had opportunity to put it to the absolute limit. The cylinder has a lifting capacity of 8 tons, but the jib is rated for 2 tons. I overload this rig constantly, and when pulling it with a tractor, any rock suspended on the jib will tip the rig. In the field, experience always trumps the science. Lower the load and make it stable.

Thank you for those kind words.
That crane is brilliant I’m a stone worker ivenever seen anything like that but I can think of 1000 times that would’ve been so nice to have
I have even used this crane to pull stumps. I love it!
@@oddjobsremigauthier
I second that. Awesome crane! Did you built it yourself or do they sell them like that with those off-road wheels?
@CactusGuru I built it. ruclips.net/video/38SUN7I16Js/видео.htmlsi=jCbRvClD27yoLD5V
would love a video on building your wheeled hoist system. could use something like that.
A teardown video is in the works! Thanks for the encouragement.
Looking forward to the teardown video. From India
great tip to move the boulders, yes I call them boulders!
Fantastic idea! Just what i needed. Thx for sharing
Cool. I've never seen large boulders moved by Hand.
That looks like it’s gonna be a nice pond. Love the crane ❤️
Like the crane. Nice modifications.
This video is so inspiring! Makes me want to get a crane to move some rocks in my backyard myself!
Did you ever get around filming the crane wheel build?
Impressive!
Did you make a video on modifying the crane? Where did you get the wheels?
I will try to do a tear down video this summer, you aren't the only person asking for one.
Yeah where did you get the wheeled hoist/crane?
There is a video all about it in the Gizmos and Gagets Playlist.
Thanks for this interesting, and helpful demo!!!

If you liked that, you will l;love this. My all-time favourite rock moving video. This guy is brilliant! ruclips.net/video/xp6M2ghzhjg/видео.html
Your rock crain/hoist/lift truck is AWESOME! is it your custom ? where can I buy one?
This one I customized myself. ruclips.net/video/38SUN7I16Js/видео.html
great video. love the modified crane. Can you hook it to the back of a tractor?
This a good Idea, you know what you're missing is a litle hitch or coupler so you can pull it with your truck or tractor.
You seem to be a balanced sort of fella😉
Wouldn’t you be able to get the crane under the trailer if you let some air out of the tires ?

Wow... I love boulders and I need that crane!
I only have ten 2’ granite boulders around the garden (I placed myself). Wish I had 3-4’ers though!
I modified that shop crane specifically to move rocks.I love it!
Odd Jobs Remi Gauthier ...please make a video how to make/mod it! 🙏
Awesome. Making one as we speak. Where did you get the wheels? What are they off of?
The wheels came from two lawn tractors. The front tires of most old lawn tractors have the hub and shaft in a single steering unit.
Let me know how you make out!
Really like your mobile crane! Did you make that yourself, or is one similar to that available to purchase somewhere?
You got the rock problems I got with wood
How did you modify your crane? I would like to do the same. I
I will be making a video on how I made it in a few weeks.

About 2500 lbs for the large one, good estimate. Based on 16 cu ft and density of 2.5.
It is more than 1 ton. You said 4x2x2. At 167 lbs. per cu. ft.
Two loads wouldm have been better. Maybe three.
Now where is the fun in that! HaHa!
Take some air out of the boom
Yes. I wish I had of thought of that then!

Easy way to lift a rock. @
Impressive, but next time dispense with the horrible music
@@douggower9958 Thanks!
What’s the name of that machine you have?? That help you move those rocks.🪨 🪨🪨🪨
