Lots of snarky comments about the skills of the truck driver. Remember, every big truck driver was at one time a rookie. And beginner drivers make mistakes in judgement and execution. Most get better as they gather experience and become seasoned drivers. And any driver who claims to have never made any mistakes is one who has selective memory.

Yes Sir, but this one, imo, could have been preventable in so many ways. Just to make sure ( best i can) I did something similiar driving out into a farm field in an rgn to help retrieve plane parts from a fatal small engine plane crash. It was 1986 snd there was a track hoe waiting there in case i got stuck, or did what this person did.
people gotta remember driving is not a right its a privilege and be aware of whats around you and use common sense. that goes for CDL and non CDL drivers
Guess what I’m old school truck driver, I’ve been driving since I was a teenager, stop being a snowflake you get schooled there is no mercy you learn from mistakes, but obviously this guy has no common sense and isn’t very bright. Typical for today’s foreign truck drivers.

Levi Wyatt While no law would be broken for posting the re-rail of a box car, if the customer does NOT approve of publicly posting, their attorneys may start a hassle. You may be potentially liable. And, the way the legal system works, the defendant, almost without exception, pays a lot of money out of their own pocket.
I'm just a little 'ol lady, living off-grid, way up here in the northern mountains of Idaho. I can not believe how much I have learned about wrecking, towing, and recovery by just watching your videos. This one had my tummy in knots. Just fascinating and impressive!

You were so professional in this video, especially dealing with that driver and not calling him out to his face; you still treated him respect even though I suspect you had some choice words running through your head.

Great job Ron and Talon. Ron, you have to be really proud of your equipment to be able to pick that heavy load up and put it back on the bridge.
the perfect Pratt Video... we have not the best time of day for a complicated recovery, the Arc Nemesis, directly overhead, a heavy weight load in a position it shouldn't be in yet has managed to put itself there and a silent suggestion for greater lighting overhead and somehow, Ron and Talon manage to solve the situation in a way that makes it look like they planned it all just to show off their Tator skill. Good Job once again and God bless.

Ron, that was dangerous situation! Plus the lift and boom positioning. I was gritting my teeth watching you doing this dangerous maneuver!!! Kinda breaking my sweat! Ron that was a Deffinetly a lift up job for the books. Just what in the world was he doing out on that farm road in the middle of the night. Was he looking for that wood fiber plant nearby there because I heard what road you said you was on. The guy you could tell was Definitely not familiar with roads like that and shouldn't send that guy to pick up a load that requires to go down dirt roads to load up. And should have just shut down till day light to get out of there. I know some of the roads around Cape Giradau MO. And surrounding areas that are Not truck routes.
All of us drivers has once or even more done something bad when driving, we are all human, it just happens. I'm sure the driver of this semi didn't want to end up needing to call a tow company, that's out of his pocket. Human error is what makes us learn. Great rescue Ron and Talon!
YOU ARE THE MAN! Great job. You earned your money that night. That driver was lying through his teeth about the weight of his load. I hope he got some serious fines. He probably should have gone to jail for endangering the bridge, as as well as your life. And equipment. Great job. You rock. Love your videos.
As a retired trucker, I find it disconcerting that the driver didn't know what he was hauling, or what his weight was. Awesome recovery, have to love those jobs that challenge you.
He flat out lied about the weight, claiming 40,000. Maybe he was lying about the cargo too. 49,000 cantilevered to the back of the box? I can't help but wonder if he wasn't over the 34,000 pound limit on the axles, and the 80,000 pound limit .
Yeah, Im also retired, I had couple mistakes during my career. But driving over 2 million miles I think thats a pretty good track record. But I always knew what I was hauling 100% of the time, what my weight was 100% of the time. never got a overweight fine. I still remember when I was a rookie I was on a curvy road in the middle of nowhere in the middle of night, pouring down rain, one of them the had curves you had to take up both lanes to keep your trailer from going off the edge, I was rounding one corner wide and here comes a bear rounding the same corner the other direction, so I had to get over real quick in midturn and my eye was on my trailer tire, I thought I seen my trailer tire go off the road and the trailer started leaning. It was raining and my mirrors had raindrops on it so it was almost worthless But I was only going 10 mph around that curve and I stopped in time before my truck and trailer went over, I had to stop on the road. and get out and look to see how much exactly I was off the road, I got back in, inched it foward and hardleft, and the further I drove the more my trailer was sliding down the hill, I went nope and called a wrecker lol.
It could have been a translation issue. Ron stated in another comment that the guy gave him the shipper info and it said kitty litter from purina. The driver may not have understood the english words kitty litter so simply could not remember them when Ron asked. But he showed him the shipper info before Ron even hooked up, so he wasn't attempting to hide it. He just didn't know or couldn't remember the words in that moment...he did almost fall off of a bridge, he was probably still in a slight state of shock. You're memory and second language skills can easily go out the window while in that dreamlike moment. And i know i would feel like i was in a nightmare of a dream if my car was hanging off a bridge, and that is just my car, this guys career was hanging in midair. And his life was hanging there also, until he climbed out.
@@Satchmoeddie if he is 49000 at the back of the trailer then yes, he is illegal because it only gets heavier as you move forward.
This was a very interesting video. Night time, unknown weight limit on the bridge, heavy (maybe over weight by the comment of holding 49k.) and the always present high voltage power lines. Great job getting the job done with no additional damages.

I like that you didn't belittle the truck driver. He's obviously not familiar with the area and your kindness made a positive impact.
As bad as the situation was, could have been so much worse for the driver if the truck went all the way over.
Whys it seem like all the really interesting recoverys happen in the dark?

This driver, in my opinion, is beyond incompetent.
My guess is the weight is beyond the bridge capacity. A driver ALWAYS needs to know what he is hauling. And, the guy can't drive properly at all. This is the kind of driver that causes problems in the trucking industry.
I was a driver for over 5 years until my health sidelined me.
I had my own few close calls with some unposted bridges but nothing like this, yet I marked in my memory and on a map to not take those ways again, even a few "pros" told me they found themselves crossing a under rated bridge or two only to find out later it was really not to capacity of their rig. Ma of those million milers got their award out of sheer luck and fortune they did not get into that bad a situation.

This one definitely had me concerned..... In hind-sight, I probably should have had a second truck set up in front of him pulling down on his drives and perhaps with a strap over the trailer, but the second truck wouldn't have been able to get a good angle for either. This worked, but it had me sweating it until it was safely over the bridge. Thanks for watching and God bless.

I gotta tell you that truck is beautiful! Especially when it's all washed and shined up wheels are washed and the chrome is all shined up and boy does it look good! In fact it looks so good that I put it on my computer as a wallpaper!

Nice recovery Ron. For those of us that don't do that for a living, you almost need some dramatic breaks and an announcer going "Will the crew get electrocuted? Will the trailer break under the strain? Find out after this message!"
49k on the rears? WOWZA - DOT would've had a field day with him on the highway! Can see where the load rippled the left side of the trailer box from the load shift. Probably not the fault of the driver as to how it was loaded, but I'd have refused that load for being WAY too tail-heavy! These are the things I do not miss about driving trucks.
You always make it look so easy, Ron - with that much weight, along with high voltage above, I know it wasn't! Great job getting it out of that precarious situation! I think if the trailer would've went 2 more inches to the left, things would've been MUCH worse for the driver, and the truck. Glad he didn't get hurt.

Your videos have given me a real appreciation for the challenges wrecker drivers face. Thanks for sharing. I personally have never seen a wrecker driver with lights + siren activated.
Cool that this very complicated job at first glance was fairly easy and straightforward, at first i kept thinking a sling on the side so it did not just roll off that bridge made more sense to me (i was kinda cringing when you first started lifting ) but as always your experience and professionalism made it all look easy. cheers for another job well done and safely.

Ron, Talon.....great job guys. That was a lift with a pucker factor for sure, especially with those pesky power lines that love to hide in the dark. It could have been a lot worse had the driver gone forward a little more or you not noticed those lines. Again, great job. Keep up the great work and stay safe and as always, God Bless.

It sounded like you were trying to hide it for the video but I could just hear in your voice how irritated you were by that whole situation.
I wasn't irritated. I was really concerned for the safety of the job. The video may not show it well, but there were many dangers with this job and it had me on "edge". Thanks for watching and God bless.
Ron Pratt Just seemed like a situation you dont like being in but I suppose it's all part of the job. As someone who doesn't have wrecker experience (I just pull a stepdeck), it seemed like the kind of situation where if you picked it wrong and the trailer swung it could've brought everything including your wrecker over. Nice pick btw! I didn't see that trailer move at all besides straight up. That was pretty impressive looking to me. Have a good night.
You are correct, one wrong move could have been disastrous. That is why I took my time, made very small movements, and watched everything very closely. Also placed my truck so that it worked in my favor. Thanks for watching and God bless.

At first impression it seems he may have been trying to hide something. On a small back road at night, doesn’t know what he’s hauling and English is definitely not his first language.
Folks could go in a lot of directions on first impressions alone.
That said first impressions get people in trouble.
I would be very curious to know if he was overweight. I won’t speculate as others have to his citizenship etc....
As a retired police officer this makes me have a ton of questions I’d like the answers to. I’d definitely like to see his log book as well.
But anyway...

Agree with this comment. As a LEO, I also have a lot of questions. It's important for us to be forgiving of mistakes with truck drivers, young and old... BUT, as in every profession, I've seen plenty of people who have no business being behind the wheel of a 30 ton Semi.
I know the driver was shook up but on a back road like what we call in the South a pig trail road and didn't know what he was hauling yea would have thrower a red flag up for me.

Great video Ron as always. That was a really ticklish lift. I, myself, didn't see the power lines but I'll take your word for it That it was there. Power lines and metal don't mix very well. lol I'm just glad no-one was hurt. Talon was really on the ball on this one. The only thing I wasn't too thrilled about is when he was under the back of the trailer. I mean I'm sure that if you had thought it was unsafe, you wouldn't have let him go under the trailer.
Well as long as everything went safe that's all that really matters.

Roy Wrenn there was a spot in the video that I thought you could see the power line for just a second when Ron looked up at the top of the trailer. They were not easy to spot though.

@@TheBLACKMQQN I tried to tell people that all the time for almost to last 25 years..that somebody wants to argue about well I pull a flatbed in this is dirt and grease and I'm like Uhh.. there's a difference son between new dirt and old dirt and that's old dirt. that's a ketchup stain dried up on that t-shirt looks like you haven't changed it in probably about a week yeah I know what you mean..I'm just almost at 28th and a half years out here and I'm kind of the same way I'm still new I'm in my training. I wondered if law enforcement was involved, I glimpsed on officer during part of the video. Did law call you or the customer? I suspect with the officer there he was also covering your butt too just in case someone down the line tried to say some damage was done by you. Anyway I also enjoy your videos, one last question, have you ever had to turn down a rescue that you said 'we just can't do that one'?

Ron...I got in early today and was working on my V-8 Ranger project when my friend (a heavy wrecker operator brother of yours) stopped by my shop. He's not on call tonight so we're taking our wives out for a surprise date night. We had a beer together n watched this video. My friend does NOT envy you for this job! Also, don't worry about any of us drinking/driving...we rented a limo to take us all over town. Cost a few $ but our licences are worth every penny, and our girls are worth even more!

Anthony Robertson Most drivers operate on a drop and hook system. They drop one trailer and hook to the next where a door seal has already been applied by the shipper. It could be 43,000lbs of cocaine. The driver really doesn't know.
Fair point but the driver should at least have been able to tell Ron what the bill of lading says is in the trailer.

A serious lack of lighting didn't help the driver any . That's the one thing about RUclips that bugs me .All the arm chair people who criticize, as if they haven't made a mistake ever and are perfect .
Ross Charlie, yes its dark at night, but if you are in doubt, get out and look! There's really no excuse for this to happen, you can feel it as the trailer tilts and pulls the cab, he had time to stop, go look, and either back out or at least not get as far screwed as he did.
theres a reason its called G.O.A.L.. Not only that but trailers have marker lights watch them. as soon as it begins to tilt, you stop. No ifs or ands. Putting a trailer that far into a ditch lifting the drives off the ground is pure lack of training and ignorance. The driver is one luck SOB, bht does need to have his CDL taken and training once more.
i thought the tractor had headlights. and i thought he drove forward over the bridge. but, i could be wrong.
therorectly, the headlights would have illuminated the bridge , as he approached. assuming the head lights would have been as wide as the bridge, he would have seen both sides of the bridge.
assuming both of his eyes worked, his bran should have been able to process the the information from both eyes and judged the width of the bridge and the approach to the bridge was angled. assuming the headlights illuminated the approach before the bridge.
assuming he had taken at least one turn before this bridge, he would have noticed that the trailer is not attached and does not follow the tractor in a straight line.
then, he could have swung the tractor wide to get the rear of the trailer closer to the center of the bridge and he could have, assuming the tractor has a steering wheel, kept the tractor on the far right side of the bridge, so the trailer would track closer to the center of the bridge.
i also thought saw mirrors on the truck, i have heard of some truckers using those things to watch the rear of the trailer to make sure it clears the bridge, but, that might only be in Europe.
or, and i will admit this is very tricky, takes a lot of training and experience and few can master it, but it is great skill to learn, stop the truck, open the door, and walk to the rear of the trailer and see if t will clear. move a few feet, check again. it can take years to master that skill. the hardest part is getting out of the truck. many forget to open the door, some forget they are high up and fall. others turn the wrong way and check the front wheel by mistake.
@Norberto Rivera they were under an overhead cable. Wouldnt take much to mount a power relay box to a pole and pole mounted lights up if there was one close enough
It is a county road. They do not put up street lights on county roads in the middle of nowhere.
I think it might be time soon to get y'all another rotator. You could get the new one, and Talon with the one you use now. xD
Especially with some of these jobs y'all do.
Might not be a good idea. From what I've seen in Ron's videos; I think most of the emergency responders in his area have him on speed-dial! In fact, in one video, I distinctly heard one officer state. "I looked at the situation and said, 'call Ron'". Having a second rotator my actually hurt; as they'd be on the go so much, they would wear themselves down and possibly make a major mistake.

Obviously he could hire another driver or 2 but I think Midwest Towing's fleet is just fine as it is. No need for another several hundred thousand dollar rotator when you don't have the logistics or personnel.
All depends on if the business is there for it. A few times a year is not worth it unless you want to consider a second truck as a backup. If the business is there, operators can be found.

Wow, ive never ever in almost 40 years heard a driver say he didnt know what was in his trailer. I think of the quote from the fast n furious movie where dom tells the guy "real drivers always know whats in their cars." . While I dont want to assume anything some thing seems rotten in denmark. No idea on his weight, tandems all the way forward, unlit country road............. good thing rotator ron saved the day.
all the way forward makes for great tail swing but levels the load weight nicely in most cases
he might have moved the tandem all the way forward because it shortens the wheelbase and makes it easier to get around those tight turns. I agree he should never have let it get that far out of hand. Get out and look as many times as it takes people. considering what the tow must have cost him/his company, not to mention when the deputy got done with him, I bet he gets out and looks a lot more in the future.
Doesn't know what his load is? maybe he doesn't read English so well. I always knew what my load was supposed to be, even if it was already sealed when I arrived.
Same here. I whouldnt even start the engine when i dont know whats in my trailer.
I mean, there could be ANYTHING inside. From dogfood to toys for children or drugs and illegal weapons.
You remember the movie "Space Truckers"? There they told the truckers they dont need to know whats inside their trucks because it was "secret goverment stuff" and it was a full load of killer robots. Okay, bad example but i think you know what i mean.

I hate to be negative but to get that far up on the bridge is flat out negligence and how do you not know what your hauling? It's scary who they let have a CDL these days

Gabe Smith lots of places are hook and haul, if you're not running placards than you have no real reason to know what you are hauling. Some places even lock the trailers at the dock to prevent them from being opened till they arrive at the destination.

That is the result of allowing aliens, illegal and otherwise, into the US to work for cheap wages. Get used to it - OR - close the borders, only citizens work. Chine, Korea and Japan don't hesitate to expell illegals immediately, They are undocumented, no trial necessary. US law should not be used to harbor illegals - especially to gain cheap labor. Certainly they should be be driving trucks on any US road.
A trucker friend back in the UK 75% of the time he didn't know what was in the trailer behind him. He did "Trunk" work, picking up sealed customs cleared containers from the docks and drive them to where ever the paper work said.

I hope this driver said his prayer because was lucky tonight. This place looks like it's way out in the country. Not very well lit and pretty easy to get in a situation as this. What was he doing on a county road anyway? Maybe he is over weight and trying to skip a port. We have truckers come through our town that do that all the time. Great video Ron an Talon. Stay Safe out there!

Joshua79C C You are correct that he was coming from a factory and probably using his GPS, which added to his failure. However, we do have a port just a few miles away on the Mississippi River. There are a lot of commodities and fuel sources ( we also have two major pipelines) that run through our area.
Forgot about the MS River Port, but Edwin may have been referring to a check point (weigh) station.
I've watched many of Tators video's but I can't say I've ever seen Ron this nervous, You can hear it in his voice. I even got a little nervous when Talon got in the truck to check the brakes, Looks like it's ready to go over. I'm sure he was wishing he had another heavy wrecker to hook on the front of the trailer from the front to hold it down.

Before I retired from both my military and deputy sheriff careers from my injuries, I had noticed a trend that seems to be increasing more and more today.. The quality of drivers on the road in these big trucks has dramatically shifted to the worse.. And if that new law passes in congress to lower the age, I fear it is going to just get completely out of control...
Also I thought drivers were required to know what they are hauling in case of emergency?!?
Malakie Usn I think it’s because of the pay, companies are getting more and more desperate to hire drivers and are relaxed on their requirements of becoming a truck driver.

Talk about the puker factor! In the first place am surprised that he didn't flip off the bridge and I am not sure I would have hooked up to that one if I had a tator..... my friend you have nerves of steel! I bet your insurance agent would have had heart failure watching this video!....lol
I have watched everyone of your videos this is the first one that scared me even knowing it had to have gone well otherwise there wouldn't have been a video...That had to rank up there as one of the scariest lifts you have had to do, if that load had shifted it would have gotten ugly fast....

This ranked up in my top 5 scariest lifts, for certain. I don't know about my insurance guy, but their insurance guy was happy to see the pictures I had taken. He couldn't believe I got it out with one truck and without tearing up the trailer. Thanks for watching and God bless.

Thanks Ron for the time you take to share your adventures , this particular vedeo resonates with me a lot because I have been in all these situations and can understand what’s going on better , I have been in all these shoes before , a driver sent in the middle of no where in the night , been that recovery driver doing what you do turning up at scenes of accidents which are very distressing , been that foreigner in a foreign country trying to get on in life . Reading some of the comments and watching the vedeo left me slightly uneasy and lost at what to say ! We do appreciate your work thanks

WOW that was an intense situation for sure! I noticed that the LEO came in right at the last of the video. Were they on scene the whole time? Can you even start a recovery before they clear the scene?
By your comments this sounded to be right at your limits of "do able". Have you ever turned down a job because it was just beyond your equipment or for safety? I actually called for an officer, because of the damage to the bridge. For one thing, I knew there would have to be a report filed so the trucking company's insurance could get a report to pay for the repairs to the bridge. I waited until the officer arrived before starting the recovery. Thanks for watching and God bless.
