I remember after the bridge went out they used to deliver loads of Lumber right up to spot where the track curved to cross Sakonnet River. never witnessed the movement but always saw a car or two down there
Thanks for watching! It’s too bad that traffic dried up.
Thank you for your effort here. After watching it I got a sick feeling in my stomach that rebuilding this is as futile an endeavor as it was before 1980's. I was a trainman when the business started to slip. Nobody stood up then and doubtful they will now. Transloading is not a modern concept. The abundance of "team tracks" and freighthouses predates the transloading craze.
Jaw tooth that's sad when that line closed and 😢 ❤ 😊
This isn’t jaw tooth
Great video that was used for tri-s tank last that I remember thank you for some memories
Thanks for watching
I never saw a train there, but trains did run during my existence just up the hill from the Bismark ave location.
I was talking to my father about this as he is a bicyclist and proponent for trails. He thought that it was all owned by the same company. I said no, we (CSX) sold the state line to Myricks, etc to MassDOT and RIDOT owns the RI part with PW having trackage rights.
Being from the area, this line can definitely produce revenue, both in passenger rail and freight rail. For passenger, you may have NAVSEA Newport commuters and definitely in the summer, visitors to Downtown Newport. For freight, the area's number one export, trash. I could see a small team track or something like a Transflo possibly opening on the island, but that would be reaching.
I was thinking the same thing with freight. Lumber, propane, and *potentially* materials for the base could move in. Trash and C&D could go out as you’re saying. Newport Biodiesel could also ship out fryer oil for refining as well as getting chemicals in since they are located directly on the line near Gate 4. As for Tiverton there could be a small lumber transload, service to Inland Fuels, and trash once again. Now this is reaching but some land in Newport/Middletown could support new business if navy land were converted to industrial/commercial use like in Quonset. Track also exists on a large navy pier in Middletown and that could be used as a rail to ship transload similar to Provport.
If you have some time I would suggest writing an email to RIDOT in support of rail restoration to Tiverton and over the river to the island.
Are there plans to restore the remaining sections of this line that are still out of service?
There was a study but we’ll see if it happens.
Good work documenting this, the scenery is beautiful in New England, as I've got family in MA. These tracks were probably last used by Conrail, if I had to guess. (Penn Central tried to abandon this line back in the 1970's) Was this trackage placed out of service before the Sakonet River Rail Bridge was damaged? Keep up the good work, stay safe and God bless.
No, the Sakonnet Bridge was damaged by a freight train carrying military equipment, which permanently put it out of service
Sad to see a part of New England history gone to brush and weeds.
@@jimfuller113 Unfortunately RIDOT has done little to promote or grow railroading in the state. The 1980s/90s saw many mainlines get converted to rail trails or be outright abandoned (think of it as RI’s own Beeching Cuts). It’s incredible the Newport secondary survived to the 2000s
@@toadscoper4575 not sure how much demand for rail service there would be on the lines that got converted to rail trails, but it blew me away when they could have easily connected the East Bay trail to the Ten Mile River trail but instead turned the right of way into a new street. that's libtarded progressive politics for you.
@@toadscoper4575 Thanks for the info, I did read a while back about a freight train carrying military equipment damaging the Sakonet River Bridge. I just couldn't remember the exact details of what actually happened. My guess is, if the RIDOT decided to reactivate the New Port Secondary, in it's entirety. They would probably replace the bridge with a vertical lift span bridge, similar to the Arthur Kill Rail Bridge between Staten Island and Elizabeth Port, NJ. God bless.
I live within walking distance of this portion of the old line. I know that funding for the "Rails to Trails" initiative from State Street to the Sakonnet River Bridge has been stalled with our town for a while. Rail to Trail is a waste of effort here. There is no infrastructure for people to park and pedal. Not like Colt State Park where the Bristol bike trail terminates. The big end point in Tiverton is that glorious sewage treatment plant at the state border. Oooo-doggie, that is some destination! There is nothing except directly under the Sakonnet River Bridge, and then you are pedaling up a cliff before you can get anywhere able to cycle. On the Portsmouth side, there is nothing once you get off the bridge.
I could see the tank farm benefiting from the rail reactivation. At this time, there is a daily parade of oil tank trucks that carry the heating oil from there out to the distributors on the Cape and up to Taunton. I can only imagine the cost savings if they shipped that oil by rail then delivered it to the various depots from those areas. Also the Fall River sewage treatment plant would benefit to be able to ship the residual waste out by rail for further treatment.
It's a nice pipe dream to think about reconnecting Newport to Fall River by rail, but that will never happen.
I would suggest writing to RIDOT to show support for the rail Reactivation in Tiverton and to Newport.
If they ever decide to replace the demolished Sakonnet River bridge & restore the connection between Fall River & Newport, BOY would the brush cutters get a workout clearing that ROW!
I know RI has at least given some thought to turning the grade into a rail-trail; the best of both worlds would be if they did it as a rail-WITH-trail as they did in Newport!
I think I can hear the whining from the abutting NIMBY’s as well already!
Nice video, Mike.
Tom
A car float (cf. the NYNJ RR) is the easiest way to connect the track to Newport with the national grid
Thanks for watching. I would suggest writing to RIDOT in support of the Reactivation to at least Tiverton. RI would prefer a rail with trail option as specified in the Mt Hope greenway study.
Great video and footage it would be nice to see this line be restored and be used by trains again maybe they will someday
My thoughts exactly, but I bet NIMBYs would fight it. It isn't abandoned just OOS...
@@AidenSexsmith Okay and probably so and I live in Newark Ohio and the EPA is on Ohio Central's tail about their super 7's being harmful to the environment and they think their smoke is toxic and their engines run on diesel fuel I'd wish they would back off and it sucks to see some of them get scrapped
Thanks for watching
I doubt it’s coming back sorry
@@ernestpassaro9663 It's okay I wonder how long this line has been abandoned
I made a documentary about this line because I live in tiverton , granted I’m sure you know more than I do, but this line would be so amazing if it could be restored, think of all the possibilities the line could be used for, although with RIDOT not budging on rail projects, I highly doubt it will happen.
Thanks for watching. I suggest writing an email to RIDOT in support of rail restoration to Tiverton and Newport.
Just completely sad 😔
Thanks for watching
I really hope this line is restored to service one day!
Thanks for watching
I will bet the farm that it will eventually be restored . If You wait long enough anything is possible as I have witnessed during the last 60 years.
Looks good to me, send the T down it tomorrow. Its ready to go
Haha, perhaps freight one day could use the track with some upgrades
In a case like this, who owns the right of way now?
RIDOT
Im certain that this would have been restored decades ago if it was under the jurisdiction of MassDOT and not RIDOT. RIDOT has no interest in rail transit and continues to pour millions into endless highway projects.
In what world does MassDOT have any interest in rail either?
MassDOT has spent millions in recent years on rail, both passenger and freight. Rebuilding lines to accommodate 286K, South Coast Rail, IRAP, crossings, etc….they even bought lines to dump money into them.
@@jamescerone MA has done more for rail transit than any other state in New England in recent years
@@SouthCoastRailVideos Living in Boston, I have yet to see any meaningful improvement at all
@@toadscoper4575 I mean, look at the states were comparing Mass too.
There’s barely any freight to Boston anymore beside a small class III that services Gravel and Sand through CSX. Worcester is the only major rail hub left for freight, since Springfield is dying. Passenger service sucks anywhere outside of the NE Corridor. And the system in and around Boston is a goddamn travesty.
Making a bicycle path to New Bedford
We will never see this part restored. Not in our lifetime anyway.
There’s always the chance that a section into Tiverton can be restored. As for the line as a whole, it’ll be a while as you’re saying. Who knows though, guess we’ll see.
Probably fact. RI isn't interested in, or can probably afford, pouring money into rail projects that have little value in bolstering their economy
Like Hazleton some lines saved but 2 Highway’s no longer have crossings. What a waste . Land could not be used for any reason now. Including Coal land.
Kind of a shame
It’ll never come back due to the property value of the area now
Yachts are more important than old railroads
Never say never
If I'm not mistaken, OOS is not Abandoned, so it can still be used.
@@AidenSexsmith yes but also a lot of money needs to be put back into it. To make it reusable and I'm hoping that it would happen one day. Would there be any potential freight customers that would go back to using rail instead of trucks. Because I'd hate to see another rail trail.
Yes, there’s some potential but it is limited on the Tiverton side. If a bridge were put in then that potential is greater.
