I paddled out this huge cobia head (the bait weighed about 10lbs). About 3 minutes later Pete hooked this monster, which we believe to be a big hammerhead. The fish was smoking the Avet 80, even with a near locked drag. After about 700yds of line, the hooked pulled on the fish.

It's an amazing hookup. 200lb mono, surely you could go full drag? Do you have the whole video uploaded?
Those hammers are no joke, I bet that was a monster. That's also the first time I've heard of anyone using Cobia as bait, interesting.
yes my preset drag was almost fully tightend..the reason that the video clip was ended there was because i did in fact get draged in to the water and could not hold over 60lbs..you are correct every body thinks they need 100lbs of drag or more but the truth is its alomst impossable to be in a stand harness and hold any more then 50-60lbs by your self and being average size..
It takes a long time for a 1000lb hammer to get tired. You can put as much drag as your body weight will body and you will still feel completely helpless.
It was Pete Barrett who lives shark fishing and is definetly up to the task of a big shark
Thx for the detailed info on the gear.
great vid and the laff at the end is crazy
50 pounds of drag is insane for that fish to run like that
"That's a big ass nurse shark" Warren haha
What do you tell people on the beach when they ask you why you have such a big reel? I just got a avet 50w and I know the tourist wont be happy when I tell them im shark fishing lol
I used a avet 50sds reel and a seeker 3x5 rail rod to being in a 558# bluefin tuna just off the north carolina coast in 2012. on my friend's boat. a 45foot sportfisher., you need to set the drag to the limits on each avet reels made, or your going to lose fish everytime. period.
@black tip h , I'm new to Avets, they appear strong and well made. I mostly use penn internationals and have had no problems, however i don't want to be like a lot of people and just stick to one brand and trash the rest...I'm thinking of buying the Avet pro exw 50 do you give that a thumbs up??? Thank you for any advice.
eli madr what r u planning on fishing with it?
that was a hammerHoo. a giant one that didn't want to be caught. nice vid. i might need to get the J off my leader and put a circle hook on and pray it doesn't pull straight.
That information is listed at 1:00
too much grass here right now to fish. What did that shark turn out to be? That was a tease!
I personally think it's too bulky and will make casting difficult. Get the 9500 for surf fishing.
Wow, what lb line do you use for 60+ lbs of drag?
Where do you fish mostly. And where did you hook that one. And do shark hit better at night or day time . Thanks for your time .
could you use a 30 gallon sealed barrel like a giant bobber, but used to increase buoyancy, the deeper it dives the more it pulls it up? legal?
just depends on what kind of fish you want to catch.. if you want to catch more sharks then go with the beef stick, but if you want to cast farther and catch a better verity of fish then get the surf rod..
The trx produces around 100 plus lbs and depending on what size the exs are they have 60
I'm curious, where do you keep the drag setting on a lever drag (say a 50 or 80 class reel) for the for the shark to pick up the bait & set the hook? (in free spool with the clicker on for tension, or at strike & at a 1/4 of the line's strength rating, or some other setting?) Thanks for the great videos!
yaaaaaa! gettin dumped!!!!!! that was a monster!! sweet rod!!
Get a 12ft Tsunami Airwave spinning surf rod.
the okuma makaira can have up to 100lbs of drag, you should try those out u probably cudve reeled that sucker in with that
What's your budget?
What kind of harness is that? I like how it just hooks in there with no spring clips to corrode, thanks.
I guess that monster got away. What was your guess as to what it was? A large shark perhaps? Love your videos!
hooks will pull with that much drag. Josh do you have vids or the makaira?
So did yall beach it?
Blacktip down.
There is only one way to stand 100 pounds of drag and it is building a drag pod. One guy on a shark board has a avet 50wTRX wich has 116 pounds of full drag and he built a drag pod so that he could stand around 80+ pounds. He mad a tripod thing like a camera mount and clamped the reel seat to it so that he could sustain heavy drag numbers. Ive heard of one guy that told me he held 100 pounds on a big tuna with the TRX for a short time but that was on a boat.
josh I'm coming to fish at west palm beach this summer see u out there
I would recommend saving up and purchasing an Okuma Makaira 80w. It's an awesome reel!
Thanks man, what would be a good surf rod to pair it with? Thanks for the help
Ive fished with the black tip hunter and he fishes with heavy drag so I believe it was 50 lb of drag
Would my 50 w with 600 yards of 130 JB hollow and 125 high seas mono with the drag set at 32 strike and 40 full be able to catch a big hammer, tiger, or bull. I don't think I can hold any more drag than that
Nice..bro give me some tips for shark fishing..i been using life fish i hook them from the back n i cut the gills so il bleed to bring the sharks in . i drop the bait about 150 yards but no luck with sharks only with red bulls the biggest 1 we catch yesterday was 47 inches.. do i need to go more then 150 yards in or use a different bait. any tip will help..
i was looking to buy some of that braid but its so exspensive it can run up to 1300 bucks depends on what size an how much
surprised you pulled a hook on a shark that is very hard to do. Its hard enough tryin to get the hook out with plyers on the beach lol.
Besides the drag difference, what is the difference the "Pro" series and the "TRX" series? Please respond.
Apart from the drag pressure have you had any problems with it?
Can you cast any size of the penn senator reels? Or are they not made to cast out
Shark Outlet.
Hook pulled.
one more question instead of the 9/0 i bought the 6/0 because it was cheaper what should i spool it up with for just staring to tag and fish for sharks
The new Avet TRX 80w is out now. I just got me one for shark fishing. Is this reel a good choice for land based shark fishing in your opinion?
+460WeatherbyMan Yes, especially the TRX
Awesome, any advice on spooling? I was thinking 200 lb JB hollow with 200 lb mono topshot, I just don't know how much line I can pack on to it. I see some of your videos with ~13 ft hammerheads and you are usually using a 130. Does this reel stand a chance against a hammer that size if spooled the way I am thinking?
why did you not get the avet 50w quad it has 114 lb on full and 100 on strike?
803brando I wouldn't recommend it
josh pioliey sufix braid
josh pioliey I really don't know. It all depends on the diameter of the mono and braid. I would recommend splicing the mono into hollowcore and filling the rest of the spool.
hey BlacktipH do you know if the avet trx 50w is a larger reel than the ex 80 thanks in advance
+BLACK GUN HQ An 80 is always larger than the 50. The TRX has more drag than the EX.
That was definitely a huge shark but i just find it hard to believe that it was pulling 50 pounds of drag like that... its not the shark that doubts me its the guy holding the reel i have a penn 50vsw and it maxs at 45 pounds of drag and i can barely hold it and that will snap 100lb test just by cranking it in.... so surely the preset had to be down on the reel or that is an extremely strong guy i love your videos though
sweet reel...
did u guys even get the shark or did it spool u
Unlucky mate hope you catch him next time.
Thanks
what reel would you recommend for big game fishing off the beach for under $200
im form texas and im thinking of going to florida soon.. wheres a goos spot to fish for big sharks??
Anywhere where there is lots of bait for them to feed on.
+MartinTrx50 Texas try south of panama on the tip of the st, joseph penisula. a lot of water moves in and out right there !
Hey Blacktip What size gamefish species can I target with a size 60 spinning reel.
Could an International 80w get it done? Or a fin-nor santiago?
Why not good? Had problems with it?
Did you land it or have to cut the line?
It was jaws son on there.
That sucks you didn't catch it!
Go watch black hole cape cod 450g on you tube and that was about 45lbs on tiagra 50w that guy was fishing and look at how he struggles to try and stand still. Trust me that wasn't 50lbs of drag. That was 30 at the very very most.
What is a good reel for big sharks offshore game fish
you make a fine point there
Cool what pound line do you have on that reel
Jonathan witch reel are you talking about
looks like you had a barge hooked
holy crap that was fast
John im talking about the avet and i found one they are so big and it cost $400
Avet makes smaller reels that handle big fish.i have a mid sized avet 6.0 lX and it's no bigger than a standard rockfish/salmon reel but stout enough to pull in monster white sturgeon
400$ is cheap for both a reel of this quality and strength as well as cheap for this catagory of big game reel.its as good that the Penn intl at half the price
Did you end up catching it???
It might pull 100 pounds of drag but Id like to see anyone that can hold 100 pounds from the beach. 50 is about the max or 60 pounds on the beach
How much braid did you fit onto the avet?
exactly how much line do you have on this reel
if the bait is that big i use two hooks whould of been a nice catch though
from the surf
"were gonna have to give it to him" no homo
Nope, he pulled the hook.
high island texas .
How do you rate the Avet 80w?
Beast of a shark
That's nuts
but the fish will get tired overtime if you spool it up with braid
What kinda rig were you using
sorry you did not set the drag correctly, that reel is 50#strike and 57full. learn to set the drag and fight big game fish.
those numbers are with free spool. you can set the drags higher you just wont have free spool. an Avet 80W can sustain 80lbs of drag. my Pro EX50 can sustain 80lbs. pulling a hook is due to the hookset. it just didn't grab right.
That made no sense
cdmadison08 dfgggfewwwrfgbbbbbbbcdswqqqqwssxcccfewqqqa
starting
whats a good rod for 350 or less
allright.
Its not hard to stand up and hold 50lbs of drag on the beach. I have done this same thing with an Avet80w. 6ft black tip
how many avets do you have?
what is the price of the reel?
Did you land the fish?
The shark pulled the hook.
What was the fish?
I have a 14/0 and 50w
Is the Penn spinfisher 10500 a good surf reel for shark?
Absolutely. I had a 9500 and biggest I caught was just under 8ft bull. Spooled it with 500yd 65lb powerpro and topped it off with 100lb powerpro. Then... someone stole it.
Not much, drag is all I can think of. If you are thinking about purchasing an Avet 80w, get an Okuma Makaira 80w instead. It's a much better reel.
Where can you buy those reels?
Tell them your fishing for whiting and croaker, it'll seem legit when your paddling the baits out.
Okuma lol know of plenty of people that have had problems with them. Wouldn't touch one
