Being outside on the beach on a beautiful day, just relaxing, is amazing. The way I look at it is that if you have the mindset of wanting to catch a fish every time, it wouldn't be fun. Even though this is a fish of a lifetime, you prioritized the shark's health over trying to bring it in. I highly respect that man; we need more people like that, excellent sportsmanship.
I’ve watched this video enough times now, done a fair amount of land based shark fishing using a slightly lighter setup than what Josh uses here, and have seen some real sea monsters out in the Gulf. And I think I can say with confidence that this was a fairly large great white. Likely would have taken DAYS to land, would’ve 100% killed it, and would have been essentially impossible to handle at the beach. But the opportunity to accomplish something like that is once in a few lifetimes. The only other option in my opinion would be a 1500+ pound tiger, bordering on a world record fish in that regard. It’s really just hard to fathom a fish that effortlessly shakes off that amount of drag for hours on end. Fish didn’t even freak out and run for the spool either despite obviously being able to do so, basically just acted like he wasn’t hooked to one of the more powerful mainstream rigs you can possible utilize.Truly one of the more mythical “one that got away” stories in all of fishing.
Definitely not a great white, theres proof of a 14'1 not sure the weight and a 16ft estimated 3000lb white shark caught from a land based setting on lesser gear than than in this video. This fish was more than likely an extremely large foul hooked greater hammer.
@@maxriesbeck5481 you are probably correct. In June 1963 Bill Weekly and Dave Hopkins were fishing on the North Jetty at Port Aransas. They had two 16/O Penn Senators and a 14/O baited out. On the two big reels they fought and tied off two giant greater hammers, 15 ft 4 in and a 14 ft 6 in. The smaller reel got stripped of 950 yd of 150 test braided nylon and broke off. The following weekend the two and Chris Page returned and they hooked a larger one. This shark had a dorsal fin about a foot taller than the 15 ft 4 in. caught the week before. This one however dived and tangled the cable leader in the huge granite blocks that the jetty is made of. That fish was fought for 3 hours by all three fishermen. The first two sharks were towed to the docks at Pt. A and an oil field winch truck was hired to hang them up for pictures. Scales were not available to weigh them. But there is more to the story.

I had a similar experience like this fishing off the pier in Oceanside, CA back in 1987. Everyone on the pier rushed over to watch me be dragged all the way to the end of the pier by some monstrous fish (shark?) that I couldn't even budge. An experience of a lifetime.
*****.. And I'm 5'11 220 solid muscle and lived there in Oceanscunge from 1987-'92. Are you hoping to find some local witness that can verify my story of what happened in 1987? I'm pretty sure it wasn't that big of a deal for people to still be talking about it in 2016, that's for sure.
*****.. Excuses? Do you think that I believe that a simple fishing story like mine would be remembered some 30 years later....by anyone? I'm sure there are hundreds of stories exactly like mine pertaining to the Oceanside pier, in fact, I sent you videos of large sharks being caught off of it.
Really cool that you respect the shark enough not to want to kill it. I would love to catch a monster(ever since I watched Jaws when I was little I have been fascinated) but I would never want to kill one, especially the biggest ones out there.
Love your videos guys!!!. I live in Ocean City, Maryland and at one point I was strictly a surf caster for the striper runs in spring and fall but other than that, I stuck mostly to the bayside for Flounder, Drum, Blues and such. Your videos are what struck my interest in big-game shark fishing from the surf zone. Not a ton of folks do it around here. The 1st couple of months it was modest sized bulls and black tips and the occasional reef shark, not because the big boys aren't here but tactically I had to iron certain things out like where to place a bait, bigger reels for more line and believe it or not, bait. Around here it seems like the bait that you choose to kayak out can be the difference between a 5 ft. bull and a 10-12 ft. tiger, I dunno if its like that down your way or not but here it definitely is. And I don't mean the size of the bait, I just mean what you actually put out there. I eventually fine tuned it and that 1st time that I hooked into a real big fish (350ish lb. tiger) it was one of the most exciting, extreme and scariest moments of my angling career because I had never felt anything like it. I say scary because having that harness on with my first fish that was that powerful, it almost pulled me into the break on the initial hook-up and run, I didn't know if that was normal or not. Now I know that with these big guys, it is and I've learned over the past couple of years how to plant in the sand so it doesn't happen in such a drastic way. So I just wanted to share how your videos totally got me into an entirely different arena of fishing...and those trophy striper runs just aren't that much fun anymore!!!
It's not everyday that a video like this is available; that is unless you are a fan of BlacktipH !!!!! Keep up the awesome work and the videos coming..Always setting a high bar for the rest of us to follow.
Not exactly, catch and release fishing has it's responsibilities. One of those is to make sure that you don't over-fight the fish. Any fish can die if the angler fights it for too long.
So I'm just curious how you ended up with the hook if you couldn't get the fish out? Is there something I'm missing? Great vid BTW. Would've loved to see what it was.
So you didn't let it go like you said you were going to? That's why I was confused for all that talk about letting it go and not wanting to kill the shark from exhaustion you would've had to cut the line and the hook would've obviously remained in the shark's mouth but you never showed how the hook finally came out. Did you give it some slack on purpose to relieve the hook? Sometimes that works but hard to tell with a big hook like that.
Ah, yes, indeed. I saw the hook and how it was bent but I missed that quick pull. That happened very quickly and easy to miss and that's why I asked if I missed anything and apparently I did! Glad you pointed that out, thx. At least it was good exercise for you anyway. Cheers.
