- One year since the October 7th terror attack, 101 Israeli hostages are yet to be brought home from Gaza. The number includes five female soldiers who were stationed at the Nahal Oz base near the Gaza border fence that day. Hamas killed 15 in their unit. Months before the attack, the all-female unit had reported suspicious activity by Hamas, but their warnings were ignored. In a recent report for the Wall Street Journal, correspondent Anat Peled investigates that failure, the tragedy that ensued, and the wider implications. Peled joins the show to discuss.

It’s difficult to link anything conclusively, but the Nova festival was to take place elsewhere and was only definitively moved where it was om that day only a day or two before, after all.

It could have been a deliberate policy to step back and let this happen. But I think it more likely a far-right authoritarian regime like Netanyahu's was more arrogant that this couldn't happen and so was incompetently dismissive in intelligence gathering and analysis. But after it did happen, it's now justification for all that they want to do.
Likewise, it's possible they didn't want moderates in Gaza, or Lebanon; they could have wanted extremists who won't negotiate so they can impose a final military solution. Meaning it was years in the making.
I guess we should be lucky that white South Africa didn't impose a final solution on the Blacks and non-whites there.

Nobody on that base was ever sufficiently protected.
It confounds me how there are still people who cannot see that the entire operation was executed by that country itself.
It is clear that that regime does not give one penny about its "own" people.
The exercise was simply a gaslight to the world to justify the, well, obliteration of an entire "enemy nation". Innocent people who've suffered for over 70 years who truly have always deserved to live in peace.
The events are tragic, yes, but the ignorance of the rest of the world is almost equally heartbreaking.
Israel is out of control right now for sure. However, I don't believe it was a false flag operation.
I heard this story at the beginning of the war and it just dropped off of reporting. Its was confusing on why they didn't secure the hostages at the beginning and chose to handle the situation in the way it has been. The saddest thing to think is all these lives could have been spared because to a larger extent this war has been very harsh towards women and children!
I truthfully think they didn't want all the hostages back in order to continue the war by saying they'd get them back through military force. They don't want them back because they told everyone they'd stop if they got them back and they don't want them back alive regardless because they will have a lot to say about their captivity that will not jive with the official Israeli narrative much like the elderly woman first released who said her captors took care of her every need and were kind to her.
Everybody’s starting to connect the dots now, right? It sure seems that way.

Yes…I have been searching for confirmation of this story I heard 9 months ago.
and strange but one hour later netanyahu had a document in his hand granting him special war powers.... he let it happen. 3 separate governments told him what was coming (including the U.S., Egypt, and Jordan). The army was moved to the furthest place away and the billion dollar fence was magically turned off....
There's footage floating around of an ex-IDF intelligence officer vlogging in real time from Israel saying something is wrong (ie it wasnt normal for the IDF to respond so slowly). Another interesting factor is that the people attending the the Nova festival were not observing the holiday (ie secular israelis), so it's possible they were considered worth sacrificing by the more extreme-right who control the knesset and Bibi. Has always seemed suspect & in the name of Greater Israel (ie maximalism/expansionism)

I agree. A similar attitude was displayed by the Bush(43) government prior 9-11 (much to frustration of CIA, FBI, other people/agencies). The structure was not discontinued,
there was just a casual approach which allowed the attacks to occur. Then the governments took actions they had aspired to before the attacks.

If action had been immediately taken these soldiers may very well be with their families, along with the hostages and everyone else harmed or killed on October 7th. Turns out most of those who were attacked on October 7 had actually served in the Israeli defense force because over 90% of the population has to serve. So Palestinians were not just attacking civilians. They were attacking current and previous Israeli defense forces who had stolen their lands and were then partying on stolen Palestinian land.

50 years ago with regard to the Yom Kippur war, there was GREAT failure to listen to the people on the ground. All sorts of reports were coming in from the front lines but vanity and cock-sureness bit them in the tuchus...as it tragically did here. Hopefully, it is a lesson which will not be forgotten. NEVER EVER take anything for granted. Hatred of Israel NEVER sleeps!
There is another angle to consider, as Anat said they were focused on the Northern border as Hezbollah was considered a much stronger force. When one plays Chess, they can be so focused on a great move they up their sleeve that they do not see the obvious & immediate danger they are in. Israel may have been so focused on the beepers and walky talky moves that they lost focus of the Southern danger.

Not all of those who followed Hamas that day during their "prison break" were combatants and were seen making several trips back and forth with toilets, horses, tractors and anything that wasn't nailed down but those who carried weapons of any kind and used them were most likely carrying out revenge for all of the IDF incursions since 1945 during which they shot at anything that moved and only stopped when international pressure was applied from DC or domestically. This time, I believe Hamas and Palestinian civilians were purposefully allowed to be able to invade the base and kibbutzim but the ultimate goal was to kidnap people alive to be used for trades to get their own people held as political prisoners in Israeli administrative detention or who'd be found guilty of throwing rocks and given the mandatory sentence of 20 years. What a horror show the past year has been and it must stop. Period.

And Palestine has always been a terrorist society. The fact that young Hamas terrorists, many of them drugs, were parachuting into a festival in an agricultural area is chilling. I am glad that the program is not spreading the lies that Hamas supports the Palestinians anymore. How many billions of dollars did they steal from the Palestinian people? How many women, children and elderly have died because of Hamas’ lies?
