- We are seeing the crested gecko market PLUNGE right now. How did this happen? Should you BUY? Should you SELL? We have some thoughts on this... and what you should do with your collection.
We all LOVE our crested geckos. But, if you breed reptiles, especially crested geckos, you would like to be able to sell your animals at the right time for a fair price. The market though right now is crazy. $40,000 a couple years ago for a crested gecko and now, down almost 90%! What should you do!!!!
There are ways around the situation right now. It's not all rainbows and unicorns but there are steps you can take to avoid selling your animals for pennies on a dollar. Check out this video to find out how.

Your the man Wally 🤘🏻🤘🏻 keep up the great work and I wish you and your family all the best. O and I still want some viper geckos one of these days or if you had any luck with the scorpion tail geckos 🙋♂️✌️
@@pumpkinchow :) Cool. We have vipers now, but should be about 6-8 months out for scorpion tails (best case scenario)
I think the market for cresteds is saturated because they are sooo easy to breed. I think its better to focus on breeding animals that are rarer, such as tokays. I think your point on being diverse is very important.
Yes. That and the reasons in the video. Diversity is key (not just in this market but all things in retail).
I completely agree, rarer/less heard of species should be bred more often, and endangered species definitely need a lot of captive breeding
I’ve seen this happen with corn snakes, ball pythons, bearded dragons, and couple others it’s basically how it goes with breeding. You get bunch of people that jump in and invest and flood the market driving prices down. Your completely right Wally you have to have a diverse amount of projects don’t put all your eggs in one basket 🤷♂️ one reason I’ve never been into large scale breeding. I breed the species I love and enjoy that’s all that matters to me and if I make few dollars cool. I can’t help it I’m selfish and usually want to keep all the babies for myself anyway . But if I find the right person that’s ready for a baby and haas done all the research I’ve just gifted them babies. I really don’t care about the money side of it. My favorite part is inspiring the next generation of keepers so they can enjoy these amazing animals like I have. That’s just me 🙋♂️✌️
"I breed the species I love " words more truer have never been spoken!
I only panic when I lack waffles
No waffle!!!! Oh Nooooooooooooooooooo!
😂😂😂😂 Very few comments make me actually chuckle. This one got me. Much appreciated this morning! 😂😂👍
I just sold 3 pretty high end crested geckos today. 🤷🏻♂️ keep quality over quantity and you wont have any issues!!
Agree.
@@SupremeGecko imo quality over quantity always! Im also expanding the species im producing as well. I agree that having multiple species is a huge benefit as well, even to just your portfolio at the end of the day to say you produced and sold such and such a species.
@@thegeckodon Well, sometimes families at reptile shows want a good beginner reptile and crested geckos falls right in this category. And, they don't want to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars for an Axanthic :)
@@SupremeGecko oh i see it every show. Customers either want a 40 dollar gecko or a 4000 dollar gecko. Lol!
@@thegeckodon Yes, exactly
Outstanding Video Wally! Thank You so much for addressing this!
Thanks! Wasn't easy.
Thanks Wally, for balanced info and biz lesson. Planning to purchase some higher (but not highest😂💰) end isopods later this week. Even told the breeder that $20-25 pods will be $9 before I have enough that I’m comfortable selling any (probably next summer on these). - I saw the same market trends with ostriches starting around 1990. They were 20K (equiv to 30-35 now) and lots of folks went into them. A decade later you could buy the same birds for 2500-5000. Tip: You can’t raise ostriches in an apartment. .... Geckos yes.
Thank you my friend. Lots of little nuggets in this one that I hope different levels of breeders will take something away. "You can't raise ostriches in an apartment" - More than 1 time :) (you can do most anything one time :)
@@SupremeGecko True that. 😂👍 In fact, you can hatch a good many ostriches in an apartment. After that it’s going to get tricky.
@@joestocker660 I'm going to regret saying this.... When asked how many geckos can be kept in a 12x12x18" enclosure, I am SO temped sometimes to say about 100-120 or so for a few minutes at least.
@@SupremeGecko 😂😂😂 Really depends on whether an ostrich is standing in the enclosure, ... and whether he has both feet in there. I agree, that a typical 12x12x18” ostrich-less enclosure should hold over 100 geckos, but only if they are anesthetized or dead (which will occur fairly rapidly).
Great video very interesting my partner just started collecting
Oh, how cool! If you all have any questions, please let me know.
Ball pythons leopard geckos etc etc
Yes!
A small similar situation was rose haired tarantulas back in the day. They were so common, they were sold for Pennie’s. People stopped breeding them as much because no one needed them. But now, they’re hard to find and the costs are comparable to less common species. So 🤷♀️ who knows. I also think investing in quality geckos makes a difference. But like you said, we do this because we love them. Not for the money
Right, you never know. But I have a feeling cresties will be around for a loooooooong time.
Ball pythons went through the same thing
Yes, many many animals.
The market isn’t just saturated….it’s COMPLETELY flooded with Crested Geckos! I don’t necessarily know if the “demand” has massively dropped but because EVERYBODY and their brother is now a Crested Gecko breeder , it has caused WAY too many Geckos to be on the market right now.
It’s mostly a mental game for buyers…if they feel something is no longer “special” or rare or sought after because you can find TONS of them everywhere, it immediately takes the novelty away……in turn they just simply stop paying stupid prices, hence driving prices to the rock bottom. It’s only going to get worse.
Great points. Thanks. "It’s only going to get worse." I hope this is exactly what you heard in the video. Thanks for the confirmation.
Great video, Wally! So many of us are truly worried right now.
I know. I hope the pointers at the end help some.
Great video, Wally! 😊
Thank you!
Hello great video information Wally
Thank you Moon. We hope you enjoyed it.
Absolutely now is the best time to buy and add to your collection or start a collection when the prices are low. I don’t think the prices will go back up if at all again due to the amount of people breeding them and how easy they are to breed.
Saying don’t buy now when prices are at rock bottom is terrible advice. It’s the best time to buy
You summarized the end of the video :) Did you happen to watch to the end?
@@SupremeGeckosure did and my comment still stands. Now is the time to buy whether you are looking for a pet or start a collection to breed. There are a lot of rtb animals on the market for low prices. Things may stabilize but they won’t go back up with how many new people are breeding and bringing new animals to the market. The only stuff that’s going to be worth money is basically new combos that are made from the top genes at the moment or if something new is discovered. Only reason prices were up a few years ago is because of Covid which shut down stores and shows and made everything online only and people had extra Covid funds to spend. I’ll agree with you on diversity because now a days the only stuff that seems to bring any sort of good money is the rarer animals that not many people are working with.
@@srt4kid21 I may have confused you. I am AGREEING with you on the timing :) IF you are looking for one animal to fill a need or starting one of the morph projects.
Things can change a LOT in 3 years. And, they can change a lot in the NEXT 3 also. Interesting video for sure!
Thank you @MIsopods. I would agree that things can change in 3 year or in 24 hours :)
Another great video Wally
Thank you Emily
I would like to get my first crested gecko as a pet. I seen a lot going for $50- $100 that are prettier than the high end stuff. I looking for the dark base flame or dark base harlequin. The flames look like they have a Mohawk. Think that is pretty.
Yes!!! Exactly!
@@SupremeGecko will be going to reptile show next week so will be nice to see different morphs in person. Hard to tell at times looking at pictures.
@@cG-es8mb It really is! Good luck at the show. Walk around at least 2 times before buying. Talk to the vendors. Those willing to chat are the good ones.
@@SupremeGecko will do
Sadly it happens every few years in all types. We've seen it in corn snakes, blood pythons, balls, now cresteds and I'm betting gargoyles and eury's are next.
YES!!! But ya know what will not be impacted that much... and I should have commented this in the video- unique, quality, long term breeding project animals like dalmatians, high whites, and of course BLACK empty backs like you have!
Definitely needed this video
Thanks
Great video. Very informative. I love tarantulas. We are just getting started, and this video will help us a lot.
Tarantulas are absolutely amazing pets I’ve had so many different species over the years and absolutely fell in love with keeping and breeding them. Check some of them out on here if you want I also keep all different kinds of critters and just picked up some tailless whip scorpions last night as new lil project. I also keep and breed snakes, lizards, monitors, frogs and turtles 30plus years of keeping and breeding so now I focus on trying to give back what I’ve learned and inspire the next generation of keepers. Well I wish you all the best and hope you have a great day 🙋♂️✌️
Thank you Robert.
I love tarantulas but my basic fear (all me unfortunately) keeps me away.
Tarantulas are great, I currently have 31. Recently I’ve found myself gravitating towards smaller tarantulas as well as dwarf species. Favourite T I have is one of my pseudhapalopus sp colombia. Beautiful, small little creatures
I had a feeling the market of crested geckos would crash
you and me both Shhhhhh :)
the market is at its low but the live animal market in general is low. It’s like with any markets there will be highs and there will be lows. Now is the time to invest in quality animals if you choose to upgrade your collection. You will see who are in it for the long haul not just to make a quick buck. Everything takes dedication and sacrifice. IMO this should be treated as a hobby/small business not something to rely as a sole income and unfortunately that’s what a lot of people thought would be a career. Yes some people/breeders have made a career but if u have been doing it for 10+ years and even then some have regular jobs to maintains the lights on. At the end of the day do what you love and just endure the highs and lows nothing stays the same forever but that’s how markets are.
Yes, exactly.. like any markets. And I also agree this should be treated as a hobby/small business (this is my mindset obviously).
I'd suggest waiting as well to invest in more crested geckos
Agree... but, I may take the plunge this next month.
I just started diversifying this year! Got some corn snakes, western hognose and isopods
Nice!!!! Great job. Best of luck with them. Hogs are hog crazy now in shows!!!
Thats why i bought breeding ready snakes lol can get 8 morphs with my pair! Super excited!
I think the higher end geckos are still gonna hold their prices over time
Oh, I wish I had your optimism. In reality (and from a historical standpoint), there's just little chance of this happening.
Wow that's a lot of money
I've seen it at shows. Make me gasp!
I bought a Lilly back in March and paid $700 including shipping. The father was from altitude exotics and the mother was a xxx from pangea reptiles. I paid more for the lineage then anything else. I bought a couple mystery boxes from tiki's geckos at $250 each and got a cappuccino and another Lilly White. They are only 5 -7 grams atm but frapps are in the future. I only got into cresties for my 11 year old daughter. She has dyslexia and difficulty with her memory. This has helped with time management and measurements and so many other things. I just want her to have a future.
Great breeders to purchase from for sure!!!! Good luck with your lines. Our 12 year old granddaughter also benefits greatly from the care of our animals- but a $50 crested gecko to her is the same as a $700 crested gecko :) It's all about the animals.
Solar stocks are crashing because of high interest rates 😉 something outside of the pet trade lol.
Sure. Makes sense and has some parallels
Ball pythons went through something very similar
Yes! Down, up, down, up :)
great video and awesome information
Thanks Andrew.
Very informative video, this flashes me back to economics class in college 😉
Sorry! :)
I agree, Great video and Hi from Belgium once again.
Thank you for the wonderful comment
Great video guys
Thank you very much Chantal
As always great advice ❤❤
Thank you very much.
I still want a Lily white pair!!!
Don't forget, lilly white M + F is not good. I too want a male LW
I have some.
Cool.
Leopard geckos its in the same way... or worst haha
I agree. the video was getting long so I took out a whole section describing a short history of the Mack Snow and how we saw prices plumet for them.
sounds interesting!@@SupremeGecko
Who keeps any of these crested geckos? Curious.
.
It's a breeder market. Breeders selling to people who want to breed, as no regular person buys a rare crested gecko. Saturation is the end result every time. Ball pythons, leopard geckos... it's all the same. The worst part is if you're not a "known" breeder, you can't demand the higher prices. I bred leopards that Urban Gecko would have asked $500 or more for, and I couldn't get $150 for them. People want guaranteed genetics, and that requires trust. Trust and reputation takes a long time to build. There is very little money in breeding reptiles.
@@smashtoad I agree 100% with this. "no regular person buys a rare crested gecko" This is why we have maintained so well with crested geckos. We were selling for lower $$s 2-3-4 years ago (heck 20 years ago) and this market has not impacted the 'regular person' - Family wanting their first pet.
Excellent video, Wally. Now go get a haircut!!
Right!!! Was suppose to last weekend but crazy busy!
