So now I have a classic beef stew, Irish lamb stew, and apple cider beef stew (in my cookbook!). What flavor should I make next? I'm sorta thinking a vegetarian sweet potato stew. Any other ideas?? xo - Lisa
How about a no-bean chili, for those of us that don’t eat beans? You have some great chili recipes, including vegetarian, but all have beans. I’m thinking of a ground meat chili with lots of other veggies. I’ve made some that was good with grated carrots, but you are always so creative. It would be fun to see your ideas.
Moose meat, venison or rabbit stew. Even for those who think they don't like game meat, if stewed with some acidity in the broth you can barely tell it's wild meat.
My favorite stew comes from Bavaria, as do I. "Pichelsteiner stew" is wonderful rustic home cooking. To give you an idea, I'll quote from Wikipedia: "It has been proven that the recipe comes from the landlady Auguste Winkler, née von Kiesling, who comes from Kirchberg im Wald. She ran an inn in Grattersdorf until her death in 1871. The stew was probably named after the nearby Büchelstein, where the Büchelstein Festival was celebrated on a forest meadow from 1839 onwards. The quickly prepared, warm dish enjoyed general popularity there. In interviews at the beginning of the 1960s, Federal Chancellor Ludwig Erhard repeatedly stated the Pichelsteiner stew as his favorite dish, which finally made the stew known nationwide. [4] [5] Mäxchen Pichelsteiner (from the village of Pichelstein) is the name of the hero of Erich Kästner's 1963 book The Little Man. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichelsteiner
I made this. It was theee best stew I have ever made. Filled all of the directions but added mushrooms. This recipe will now be a staple on rotation in our home. Thank you!
Rutabaga and/or parsnip is a nice addition, if you like the flavor. A few drops of Worcestershire sauce adds to the bold flavor of the broth. Everyone has their own tweaks, but you can't go wrong with this classic recipe!
You can also sub out the potatoes with radishes if you are going lo-carb. Cooking the radishes really calms the heat that they can sometimes have and they are really tasty.
I wouldn't have thought to cook the meat for a whole hour before adding the vegetables but it makes sense. The meat would melt in your mouth after 1 1/2 hours. And the taste of the meat/onions/garlic would be divine. What a great informational video! Thank you!😊
Oh, I know to sear the meat first. But after the sear is when I add my chopped vegetables, broth etc. I've never added the red wine, but I'll definitely try your recipe for my next beef stew. 😊
Your cookbook has made meal prepping for my family of 4 so helpful! It’s definitely stew weather here in Vancouver 🇨🇦 so this video came at the perfect time. Thanks, Lisa! ❤️
Hi Lisa ! I just received my Healthy Meal Prep cookbook that I ordered from Amazon. It is beautiful and I love it! I’m so looking forward to trying the recipes I’ve bookmarked while looking through it. I so appreciate that you put so much care into all the details of this cookbook, as you do with your RUclips videos. Thank you for inspiring so many of us to choose wisely what we eat. ♥️
Made this recipe the other night. I'm not a fan of beef stew, but this was delicious! (Made even more so by the onions and carrots I grew in the garden) I made your baked salmon on Monday and your Tuscan Chicken last night. I just love your recipes. They're delicious and easy to follow! Thank you!
My mother's stew. Highly recommended. My mother added one tea-spoon sweet red pepper along with the onions. Sometimes she skipped potatoes and served them with fried ones. In this case, she preferred less liquid in the stew.
Thanks for this amazing recipe! Your instructions are clear. I especially appreciate how everything is so easy to follow; how you include substitutions; as well as storage info but without making the video too long either. You're super amazing! Thank you so much! 😊❤
I’ve been thinking of stew this week. This morning it’s so nice and cool. We live in a very warm climate, so today is the day to make this delicious recipe. Thanks 😊
I appreciate the video! i watched about 3, but appreciated some of the tips and steps you took most. Didn't follow the recipe at all, but i did follow the process, and the stew is amazing! I added thick gelatinous bone broth, saved frozen chicken drippings, our epic garden scrap veggie broth, mushroom broth, and our home grown canned corn and green beans! the searing process and the order of operations was what i was looking for, and your method and tips were super helpful for this reformed vegetarian! after 28 years of vegetarianism, this momma needs to learn how to cook all the meat dishes! it's a whole dang thing. anyway, i made 4.5 gallons of stew with 10 lbs of chuck, and this pot is gonna feed my family for a while! also my dad and brother. i meal prep in a big way, too ;)
Love beef stew! Peeling veggies is a must for me, whether carrots or potatoes! I love adding peas to mine. It’s a great pop of bright green! I always add canned stewed tomatoes too. I find the tomato paste is enough of a thickener for mine, though I do use much more than you did-the entire small can!
My mouth is watering watching this. I need to try this recipe. I only came here to find meal prep ideas and have now been on this channel non-stop for 2 hours! 😂
I'm still working through garden surplus and have made veggie-beef with barley, split pea, a ginger cabbage soup with ground pork, minestrone and spicy chicken enchilada soup in recent weeks. This classic beef stew is another favorite 🎉thanks for the inspiration
I love this and your veggie soup recipes… perfect for this time of the year. I’ve tried many of your recipes and the flavor been fantastic. Thanks for all the research and hard work.. of course I appreciate you sharing these recipes so that myself and others can enjoy 🧡🍲🍁
I was looking for a beef stew recipe. This is very nice and simple to make. Lisa I got your meal prep book. It’s very good and I love the illustrations
Ooh been waiting for this since you posted earlier! Beef stew is so delicious and comforting, and you’d think it would be easy to get right, but I haven’t been happy with it when I’ve made it. I know yours will be great, Lisa!!
This stew looks so good! Today feels like a stew day here in NC. I've never had Irish stew before. Always willing to try something new. Irish soda bread would go nicely with it. Yumm! Thanks and take care.
Just made this recipe and Thank You Lisa like so many of your recipes this one is definitely a keeper. Followed it step by step amazing taste and flavours. Yum Yummy!
This stew was delicious! Made it last week and the flavor was so rich and just amazing! I added v-8 and a little water to the leftovers to make veg beef soup 🥰
@@DownshiftologyIt was fantastic. I made it into a crock pot meal. I did everything until the liquid, then put all it in the crock pot. I cooked for about 4 hours then put in the veggies in for the rest of the cooking. I hate eating the same meal multiple times in a row so definitely froze it up. My son (adult) even liked it and he usually just eats pizza and burgers. Thanks for yet another fantastic recipe.
Your stew looks wonderful. I make virtually the same stew but in my pressure cooker. The only differences are that I add the seared beef and veggies into the pot at the same time, and I don't put in flour or cornstarch while the stew is cooking. Instead, I make a cornstarch slurry and add it after the cooking is done.
I grew up with Dinty Moore beef stew........THIS IS SOOOOOO MUCH BETTER LOOKING! I don't eat a lot of red meat anymore, but I may have to make this very soon 😋
The pro tips of my french mom, is to put only red wine, not broth. And I assure you, it is so good ! And we usually prick an onion with 4 or 5 cloves :D We call that '' Boeuf bourguignon'' :D And for the frenchy but not healthy touch, replace the oil by butter at the begining :D

@Downshiftology You are a trooper!! You're the only reason I'm not disappointed that summer is over around my neck of the woods. Here in Washington state it's time to come in and cook! I'll be getting your book. 😃🤗😋
Yes yes yes that's how you whip it!!! That girl can throw down!!! Very nice darling you are an amazing CHEF sweetheart now my mouth is really watering 🤗😍👍🌹😀❤❤❤❤❤❤🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒
To give this stew a bold and rustic flavor, grab a bottle of cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir. But there’s no need to buy an expensive wine, just one you typically like to drink since there will be leftovers!

Yes, I agree! So many great ways to make it. :)
Yes! I just made a beef stew yesterday and used turnips in place of potatoes. It’s something my great grandma used to do and it’s delicious!
You can also sub out the potatoes with radishes if you are going lo-carb. Cooking the radishes really calms the heat that they can sometimes have and they are really tasty.
Parsnips are great
I like sweet potatoes in my stew .
Love adding dried prunes to a slow cooked beef, adds a touch of natural sweetness.
Oooh, love that idea!

The meat will taste much better after it gets a good sear. Plus, you also want that leftover "gunk" from searing to help flavor the soup!
Oh, I know to sear the meat first. But after the sear is when I add my chopped vegetables, broth etc. I've never added the red wine, but I'll definitely try your recipe for my next beef stew. 😊

That Stew looks absolutely delicious! Reminds me of my mommy's Stew. Yummy!
Just from the colour of the broth you can tell how rich and delicious it is. 🤤
The flavor is unbeatable!!
